Company sues Burnaby for $900,000

Dispute revolves around work on a Burnaby culvert and silt that threatened sensitive fish habitat

Construction on a Stoney Creek tributary culvert that sent a load of silt into sensitive fish habitat and threatened the Trans Mountain pipeline in 2015 has become the

subject of a lawsuit between a Burnabybased contractor and the City of Burnaby.

In a notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court Oct. 2, A.C. Paving says the city still owes the company nearly $900,000 for extra jobs and emergency work done during the project.

The local contractor was hired in September 2015 to replace a corroding culvert and to stabilize the eroding banks of Tributary 3A between Gaglardi Way and Ash Grove Crescent for an original contract price of $478,940, according court documents.

Aubrey Elementary School students ditched their desks last week in favour of the great outdoors.

On Friday, the whole school headed to Burnaby Lake Park for an all-day outdoor learning experience.

Rotating through different activity stations, students learned about local First Nations, plant life, fall animals and nature photography.

At one station, pairs of students were given fanciful fairy doors to place into natural nooks and crannies and decorate with leaves, pinecones and the like.

Students then created and wrote down a name and backstory for their woodland fairy.

The outdoor day, a first of its kind for the school, was spearheaded by primary teacher Jolene Carlsen.

“I think that they feel more free, and they’re definitely more excited and more focused and they’re able to notice more things,” she said of the monthly outings.

“They’re curious; they have lots of questions and they make lots of interesting connections and then we get a lot of good discussion out of it.”

Getting the whole school involved helps build community within the school and connects students to their larger Burnaby community and environment, according to Carlsen.

“I think that teachers are starting to see the benefits of taking their kids outside,” she said.

Early results show bump in recycling efforts

It’s been six months since the City of Burnaby switched to bi-weekly garbage collection and early numbers suggest things are trending in the right direction.

The diversion rate for green waste has increased by 5.8 per cent and by 5.6 per cent for recyclables, according to Dipak Dattani,

the city’s deputy director of engineering.

“I just want to be mindful of the numbers.We haven’t gone through the fall season yet,” he said. “One has to remember because we had a bad winter, people weren’t out gardening and doing everything they would normally do ... which does affect the yard waste diversion number.”

Dattani added he’s “pleased” with the early re-

sults.

According to the city’s annual solid waste and recycling report, the overall diversion rate in 2016 was 53.3 per cent (35.9 green waste and 17.4 per cent recyclables).

Burnaby is one of 21 municipalities that coordinates with Metro Vancouver on solid waste initiatives, including the solid waste and

resource management plan.

The goal of that plan is to reach a diversion rate of 80 per cent across the region by 2020.

Residents who fail to place food scraps and yard waste into their green bin without contamination could be slapped with a $250 fine. Furthermore, anyone who doesn’t separate their waste into the ap-

propriate bin without contamination could be handed a $400 ticket.

Ticketing, however, is a last resort, according to Dattani. He said his team will always educate the public first, send out warning letters, and if that doesn’t work, issue a ticket.

Last year, the city audited 100 households (single and two-family homes). Eighty-

five per cent put out their garbage bin, 73 per cent put out their blue box (mixed containers), 71 per cent put out their yellow bag (mixed paper), 12 per cent put out their grey box (glass jars and bottles) and 41 per cent put out their green bin (yard materials and food scraps).

The audit found household garbage had a contamination rate of 52 per cent.

A Burnaby man says a 30 km/hour speed zone on Cardston Court is not enough.

Lev Titievsky, who’s lived on nearby Carrigan Court for eight years, wants a speed hump and a crosswalk installed on the street, near Keswick Park.

“Traffic is heavy day and night,” he told the NOW. “I’ve seen people (drive) at high speeds. Luckily, I haven’t seen any accidents.”

The area is “very busy” with lots of vehicles, said Titievsky, because there are many apartment buildings and Cardston Street is close to the Lougheed Town Centre SkyTrain station.

“There’s street parking on both sides, which is always full,” he added.

The father of three said he’s witnessed many drivers speeding down Cardston Court, which has a bit of a hill. His concern is not only for kids who play in a playground in Keswick Park, but for seniors who live

there.

Speed humps are fully funded by residents, according to traffic assistant Sheryl Pordan.The current cost is $2.70 per taxable metre of property per year for five years.

“When it comes to condos, apartments and townhouses, I do believe there is a flat rate,” she said.

To get speed humps installed, at least one property owner on the block where the speed hump is proposed must contact the city’s engineering department.

“We send them an informational letter, they send it back to us and we do everything else.We basically send every property owner a letter telling them how much it would cost them on their taxes and a petition letter.

Each property owner would have to send the letter back saying yes or no,” Pordan explained. “We need 51 per cent of the property owners to actually agree to have the speed humps installed.”

As for a crosswalk, Pordan said residents need to contact the city’s engineering department. It would have to meet a certain criteria, she added, and staff would need to do a study

on its location.

“Unfortunately, the one thing I’ve learned over the years, and other people have to, is that when people are trying to cross a road and there’s no crosswalk, they

It’s time to take their cellphones away

Recent statistics from the police and ICBC make it clear drivers are still not getting the message when it comes to distracted driving.

Astute readers may have spotted a story in our paper a couple of weeks ago about two women who were issued a $368 distracted driving ticket for playing Pokémon Go while driving in Burnaby.

Really?Yes, really.

Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Daniela Panesar told the NOW it was a bit of a surprise to have two incidents related to the same augmented-reality game occur in the same day.

No kidding.

Distracted driving – mostly through the use of texts, tweets, GIFs and memes – now accounts for more crashes and accidentrelated injuries than impaired driving.

Perhaps that’s not surprising.

It’s taken a generation of police enforcement and social condemnation for drunk driving to be considered unacceptable.

But we’re far from unified when it comes to condemning cellphone use as an increasing number of drivers feel they have concentration to spare.

We don’t. Even a handsfree phone has a way of

annexing mental capacity we need for things like suddenly slamming on the brakes.

Technology is such a part of our lives that it’s hard to imagine a bus stop or public plaza where the majority of people aren’t standing with their heads bowed over their mobiles.

The technology plugs into our brains to create a positive feedback loop. It’s hard for most of us to put

it down.

But as long as our phones are smarter than we are, maybe it’s time we started using technology to fight back, disabling our phones while driving and creating automatic messages that warn potential callers and text mates when a driver is behind the wheel.

Fines have helped. But if authorities really want to crack down, how about impounding a guilty driver’s

cellphone for a few days or a month?

Clearly, those who can’t put down their phones, despite the evidence that they are risking their own lives and the lives of others, are addicted.

And, as we had to do with drunk drivers, the best way to help save lives is to either take the booze away or take the car away.

Let’s start here by taking the cellphones away.

Farewell to first past the post The odds are looking very good that when British Columbians go to cast their ballot in the next provincial election, they will be using a radically different voting system than the one used for more than 60 years.

That’s because the NDP government has tabled legislation requiring a referendum next fall on whether or not to move to a proportional representation (PR) voting model, and it has signalled it may stack the deck considerably to ensure the referendum result is indeed a shift to PR. The legislation allows the provincial cabinet to not only draft the question (which may be more than

The legislation seems tilted to ensure a change one), but – and this is crucial – allows it to order that the ballots are to be counted on a preferential voting basis.

This means that if two (or more) different proportional representation models are offered as choices in front of voters, along with the choice of the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system currently in use, it seems likely one of the PR models will cross the 50 per cent hurdle needed to pass into law.

If no option crosses that 50 per cent threshold on the first count, then the second choices of voters (and perhaps third choices as well) are redistributed, and

it would seem logical that a person voting for one particular PR model would make the alternative PR model their second choice.

It seems far less likely that someone favouring a move to PR would make their second choice to be the firstpast-the-post model.Thus, if the current FPTP model doesn’t hit 50 per cent in favour on the first count, the odds of it growing from voters’ second choices do not look good.

Call it clever, unfair or cynical, but the legislation seems tilted to ensure a change to proportional representation is in the offing.

Not all New Democrats favour moving to a new voting system, which is understandable. After all, the party is currently in government thanks to a somewhat unusual and quirky outcome from a first-past-thepost election.

The party has never achieved 50 per cent of the vote (in fact, only the B.C. Liberals have done that and then it was only a one-time achievement) and is unlikely to do so in the future.

A proportional representation system will ensure no party has a monopoly on power, and will reward minor or fringe parties with a disproportionate amount of political power.

It is the Greens’ all-in move towards getting a PR system in this province that is reflected in another part of the legislation.

In what appears to be a sly and cunning move, the NDP has inserted a clause in the bill that stipulates that Continued on page 7

Opinionnow Stop gambling with kids’ lives and upgrade schools Dear Editor: The recent earthquakes in Mexico, and subsequent rescue efforts among the rubble of fallen structures, highlight the lack of preparedness in our region.

The urgent need to seismically upgrade our schools is of critical importance – several schools in Mexico City were completely destroyed, killing students and staff while they went about their daily routine, unaware of the danger.

In Burnaby, there are several schools highlighted in reports as being in a state of “extreme danger” of collapse in the event of a high magnitude earthquake.

The provincial government has delayed this for years due to financial constraints. I agree, the cost to seismically upgrade these schools is very high, but the price we will pay in the event of an earthquake is immeasurably higher.

Many of these schools have “blocks” or parts of the structure that are most critically in danger when the shaking starts (i.e. gymnasium extensions, second storeys of older wings). I implore the provincial government to zoom in and identify those parts of each school that are most likely to collapse and kill, and start work on those immediately without waiting for the business case to retrofit the entirety of each school.

Cities such as Burnaby, which have surpluses in the billions of dollars, should fund this work now in advance of completed business cases

and delays. I call on the mayor and city council of Burnaby to commit to using part of this surplus to fix this problem.

This cute move means the Greens are beholden to keep the NDP in power until at least then, no matter what the NDP does.

The Greens have made switching to a PR model their absolute number 1 priority.

And so the party cannot risk an earlier election.

Meanwhile, the NDP government says it will conduct a round of public consultation before coming up with the referendum question, but you have to wonder whether it has already been written.

Contractor sues city in creek washout dispute Continued from page 1 The contract allowed for adjustments to price and contract time to “accommodate or otherwise allow for a concealed or unknown condition discovered on the Project site,” so the company billed the city for an additional $1,108,300.12.

The city, however, approved only an extra $229,690.47, according to AC Paving.

“The City’s failure or refusal to pay the Unpaid Amount has prevented AC Paving from obtaining sufficient bonding to bid on public procurement projects, which has resulted in a loss of revenue for AC Paving,” states the notice of civil claim.

The document makes no mention of the cause of the Oct. 30 bank failure, which the city has said was an AC Paving employee.

Water from the stream was being diverted from the construction site with hoses and pumps, when an AC Paving worker’s boot was sucked into an inlet hose as

he was maintaining a filter screen on a pump, according to a November 2015 city report.

“In the absence of the bypass, the upstream drainage flows overtopped the cofferdam and water flowed through the Construction Area,” reads the report.

Debris from the flow then compromised other bypass pumps and a storm sewer plug.

“At this point, the Construction Area was taking on full drainage flows and caused the newly placed slope to fail with a rush of water which transported sediment from the Construction Area downstream,” states the report.

The city immediately notified Kinder Morgan of the slope failure and the potential threat to its nearby Trans Mountain pipeline, according to the report, and the pipeline company decided to expose part of its pipe and support it with a mobile crane to reduce the chance of failure as the slope was being stabilized.

The contractor is now suing the City of Burnaby for unpaid costs stemming from extra and emergency work the company did during the project.

Among the disputed extra costs outlined in AC Paving’s lawsuit are amounts for work done to fix the

damage – including slope failure and sediment pooling – the city has said was caused by the boot incident.

the boot.

“That’s the whole meat of the dispute,” he told the NOW. “The reason for the dispute is to work out how much each the city and the contractor are responsible for as a result of that incident.There are amounts

The city had not filed a response to the contractor’s claim by press time.

Increasing the earnings cap for people on income or disability assistance is welcomed news for residents living in Burnaby-Edmonds, according to MLA Raj Chouhan.

The B.C. NDP made the announcement on Sept. 19, saying at least 5,800 British Columbians on income assistance and 3,000 British

Columbians on disability assistance will benefit.

Starting this month, people on income assistance can earn $200 a month more without any impact on their payment. For those on disability assistance, the annual earnings exemption will go up by $2,400 a year.

Of the city’s four ridings, Burnaby-Edmonds has the highest number of people under the B.C. employment and assistance program.

There are 2,677 recipients, and 617 of them have dependent children.The riding’s population is 56,890 and 4.7 per cent is using the program.

For comparison, the percentages for Burnaby-Deer Lake, Burnaby North and Burnaby-Lougheed are 2.8 per cent, 2.6 per cent and 2.3 per cent, respectively.

“We have said that before the election, and during the election, that we wanted to

make people’s lives more affordable and help them. As a result of this announcement, I’m very happy,” Chouhan told the NOW. “As we all know, the result of higher housing prices, many people are not able to stay where they were for many years before, so this helps a little bit. Obvious-

ly, it’s not something where somebody can make a living forever, but at least it’s our way of telling people we care.”

He said the increase will encourage people to work.

“Before, people were able to do some work.They thought, “Well, what’s the point? Anything I earned

was taken away.’ Now, it’s a huge encouragement to go out, be productive, be helpful and earn if they can, and they can keep that money.”

The changes will apply to the current year. If someone has already reached the current maximum, they will be reassessed under the new cap.

Tradition grows at Burnaby school

A Thanksgiving tradition continues to grow at Windsor Elementary School.

Last Thursday, nearly 80 Grade 5,6 and 7 students sat cross-legged in the hallway of the school annex and partook of a Thanksgiving feast, complete with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, salad and, of course, pumpkin pie.

“It started small, with just pumpkin pie, and then it just kind of took off,” said Grade 7 teacher Shyamala James, who organized the first meal seven years ago.

She has been putting it on every year since with help from her brother who works at Superstore.

This year his store donated two turkeys, 50 pounds of potatoes, 15

boxes of stuffing, four bags of salad, seven pies, whipping cream, cranberry sauce, butter and cream.

“We get the kids to do a lot of the prep with us,” James said.

Teachers, retired teachers, moms of staff members, the school’s community coordinator and its recently retired hot lunch coordinator also pitched in to help.

“It’s just about building community,” James said.

It’s also a way to introduce some of Windsor’s students to a Canadian tradition.

“A lot of our kids are from different parts of the world,” James said.

“Not a lot of our kids are used to having Thanksgiving or know what that means or what that looks like. …They love it. It’s kind of a tradition now.”

One-man-team turns into Hall-of-Famer Burnaby’s Milani plumbing business recognized at BBOT event

Always keep improving, Demitrio Milani told his son Vern; you can always do better.

Vern took those words to heart and transformed his dad’s drainage and plumbing company from a one-man team to a business that employs more than 100 people and serves customers across the Lower Mainland.

On Thursday, Milani Plumbing, Drainage and Heating was inducted into the Burnaby Board of Trade Business Hall of Fame.The accolade is the culmination of decades of hard work by the entire Milani family and their employees,Vern told the NOW. “It’s an honour. I’m very proud of it, and I’m very proud of my team and my family for all working toward that goal,” he said.

The company was started by Demitrio – the Milani patriarch – in 1956. Demitrio, who had emigrated from Italy to Vancouver, worked as a sewer line installer in between shifts at the local railyard.

For Vern, the family business is all he knew as a child. By 10 years old, he was already helping out in the shop.

Every day after school, he’d head over to Milani Drainage and Plumbing Supplies at McKay and Kingsway to help his dad, and on Saturdays, he’d spend the whole day there pitching in.

He thought that’s what all kids did, he said.

By the time he was 17,Vern had graduated high school and was beginning his formal training

as a plumber. Because of his onthe-job experience, what was supposed to be a five-year program was reduced to two years when he skipped the first three.

By 19, he was working full time for the family business.

By then, the company had grown by leaps and bounds – but Vern knew it had even more potential, and in 1986, he bought Milani Drainage and Plumbing Supplies Ltd. from his father.

The company was started in 1956 by Vern’s father, Demitrio. PHOTO LISA KING A short while later, he bought a new property (the business’ current home at 5526 Kingsway) and built a new store and work yard.

Milani also went through a final name change, becoming the company folks know today: Milani Drainage, Plumbing and Heating.

Growth over the years was part of a natural transformation,Vern said.

When he took over as president, he was more interested in plumbing than retail, which was his father’s passion, and today, the company has a fleet of 60 vehicles that serve the Lower Mainland.

“To build a company with good, quality service, it’s a long, hard road, and it takes persistence, it takes basically being able to put a lot of time into it,”Vern said.

It’s not always been easy, he admitted, but “he always knew it was going to work.”

“There’s been some times when it’s been very difficult to work through it,” he said.

On top of running a successful company,Vern has also raised three kids with his wife, Nicole.

One son, Alexander, is already working in the family business, while the other, Christopher, is working on his business degree,

Helping others has always been an important part of Milani Plumbing, Drainage and Heating starting from Day 1 with Demitrio Milani.

“He was always good about helping people,” Vern Milani said. “That was important to him.”

Vern kept his father’s philanthropic side going long after he died. The family business has been a supporter of the Burnaby Hospital Foundation for many years. Vern even sat on the board of directors for a time.

In past years, the company has organized Christmas luncheons for patients at Burnaby

which will serve him well when he joins his father and brother.Vern’s daughter, meanwhile, is on her way to a PhD in psychology.

When asked what his dad would think about being inducted into the Burnaby Business Hall of Fame,Vern said he’d be proud.

(Demitrio passed away 13 years ago at the age of 90.)

“My dad would be very happy; he’d be very proud of me,” he said.

When Demitrio spoke at Vern’s wedding, he told his son that it was up to him to forge his own

Hospital. It also supports B.C. Children’s Hospital and the Canadian Cancer Society.

The company is now focusing its efforts on its sustainability practices. Initiatives include propane-powered vehicles, using environmentally friendly products when possible and conducting energy audits for other businesses and residents.

“It’s always good to give back and try to be a leader on things like preserving our environment,” he said. “We want to be leaders for the next generation.”

“I kind of like it here,” he laughed.

Burnaby Community Services hosted the firstever Battle of the Paddles at Barnet Marine Park on Sept. 30.

The inaugural event centred around two heats of outrigger canoe races. Participants (five teams in total) were given a quick history of the Polynesian boat, a safety demonstration and paddling lessons by the Lotus Sports Club.

The teams, all decked out in wacky costumes, then

took to the Burrard Inlet.

“Battle of the Paddles was a great way to bring the community together, pulling in the same direction.Thank you to all the sponsors for supporting the event and the participants for having so much fun on the water with us,” said Stephen D’Souza, executive director of Burnaby Community Services, in an email to the NOW. After two 500-metre sprints, team Incredibles pulled into the lead to win the race.

Paddlers also enjoyed painting on a community mural with their thoughts

and hopes for the community, a yoga session on the beach, giant Jenga, a pizza lunch and a silent auction.

Lots of pamphlets and take away information on fire safety will be available all day. The Burnaby Fire Department will have a fire engine in the parking lot near the London Drugs mall entrance from 9:30am-4:30pm.

MESSAGE FROM BURNABY’S FIRE CHIEF: EVERY SECOND COUNTS – PLAN 2 WAYS OUT That is the message fire and life safety educators will promote during Fire Prevention Week 2017. From Oct. 8-14, 2017, fire departments from across Canada will work to raise public awareness about the dangers of fire and how to prevent it. The aim of the 2017 Fire Prevention Week campaign is to raise awareness on keeping your family safe by having an escape plan for all household members.

Talk about your plan with everyone in your home. Make sure your home has working smoke alarms on each floor. Know the emergency number for your fire department. Lastly, and most importantly, practice your home fire drill regularly.

Make it a Household Activity!

• Draw a floorplan of your home showing all doors and windows.

• Find 2 ways out of every room.

• Make sure windows and doors are not blocked.

• Choose an outside meeting place in front of your home.

FIRE SAFETY IN THE KITCHEN • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.

• Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food.

• If you are simmering, baking or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

• Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.

IF YOU HAVE A COOKING FIRE

• Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.

• Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.

• If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out.

• Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.

• For an oven fire turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

Oil is a key ingredient found in the majority of today’s kitchens. Whether a recipe calls for frying or sautéing, we include oil in almost all of our daily cooking. When using any of the many oils to prepare your meals like olive, canola, corn or soybean, consider the following safety tips when cooking: • Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stovetop.

• Keep an eye on what you fry. If you see wisps of smoke or the oil smells, immediately turn off the burner and/ or carefully remove the pan from the burner. Smoke is a danger sign that the oil is too hot.

• Heat the oil slowly to the temperature you need for frying or sautéing.

• Add food gently to the pot or pan so the oil does not splatter.

• Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water or use a fire extinguisher on the fire.

• If the fire does not go out or you don’t feel comfortable sliding a lid over the pan, get everyone out of your home. Call the fire department from outside.

Fall is upon us, and that means plenty of hearty foods, cozy sweaters, pumpkin desserts, and Halloween treats. October is full of family time with Thanksgiving dinner past, and Halloween coming soon. On the Heights, we can’t wait to share the fall fun with you.

As always, food is on my mind, even after all that stuffing this last weekend. I’m looking forward to visiting all the dessert hot spots, like Nuvola Gelato for their Pumpkin-spiced Amaretti crumble gelato, and Chez Christophe and Glenburn Soda Fountain for their pumpkin-inspired fall menus. And – nothing screams “comfort food” like pasta! I will be sure to visit La Villetta and Baci Ristorante for some authentic Italian dishes.

On Tuesday, October 31, the Heights Merchants welcome you and your family to dress up and trick-or-treat with our community for Halloween on the Heights. From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., take your children to visit participating merchants along Hastings Street to receive some yummy treats. We will be watching out for the best family costumes!

Participating merchants will have a bright Pumpkin decal on their business door or window.

Once you’re all tricked and treated out, be sure to stop by the Burnaby Central Railway at Confederation Park for the Annual Spooky (but, not too spooky!) Halloween Trains in the Dark.

Costumes for both parents and children, are strongly encouraged. The train will run from approximately 6 to 9 p.m. with free hot chocolate and cookies.

We hope you’ll join the community fun at Halloween on the Heights on October 31.

Get out of chairs slowly. Sit a moment before you get out of your bed. Stand and get your balance before you walk.

CLEAR THE WAY

Are there tripping hazards such as papers, books, electrical cords or shoes on the floor in walking areas and stairways?

Pick up the clutter. Always keep objects off the stairs. In winter, are sidewalks, outdoor steps, and walkways clear of ice and snow?

Keep the walkways clear. If needed, ask for help with snow and ice removal.

LOOK OUT FOR YOURSELF

Have you had your eyes checked?

See an eye specialist once a year. Poor vision can increase your chance of falling.

Do you have night lights along the path between your bedroom and the bathroom?

Night lights are the easiest and least expensive way to light the way.

Do you turn on the lights before you use the stairs? You need to have light switches at both the top and bottom of your stairs.

If needed, ask for help installing new light switches. Never climb stairs in the dark.

Does every room have a light switch that can be reached from the doorway? If not, ask for help installing new light switches.

PREVENT SLIPPING

Are there non-slip bath mats in bathtubs and showers? Use non-slip bath mats to prevent slips and falls. Do you have grab bars in tubs, showers, and near all toilets. Grab bars should be installed in all bathrooms.

Never use a towel rack or shower rod for support. Do you wipe up spilled liquids right away? Spills make your floors slippery; even a few drops of liquid or grease can be a slipping hazard.

Most fire deaths happen in the home. Everyone should have a fire escape plan and practice how to get out as fast as possible.

ESCAPE PLAN

• Develop your escape plan around your abilities and practice it to make sure you can do it. Learn all the ways to get out of your house in a hurry.

• Teach everyone in your household (and your neighbours) what assistance you may need.

• If you live in an apartment building, know the location of all exit stairs and arrange for assistance in case of an emergency.

• Choose an outside meeting place for everyone to meet after escaping fire and smoke.

• Keep a telephone or phone with TTD (telecommunication device for the deaf) in your sleeping room within reach of your bed. Smoke Alarms • Install smoke alarms on all levels of your home and outside each sleeping area. If you are deaf or hard-of-hearing, select smoke alarms with visual alarm (strobe or flashing light).

• Change regular smoke alarm batteries every year.

Are there sturdy, easy-to-grip handrails on both sides of the stairs? If not, ask for help securing loose handrails to the wall, or installing new handrails along the full length of both sides of the stairs.

Get medical assistance immediately. Never put butter or any other grease on a burn. Do you know how to put out a pan fire? Slide a lid over the pan, then turn off the burner. Do you stay in the kitchen when you cook? Never leave cooking unattended. Use a timer to remind you to check your cooking. Don’t use the stove if you are drowsy or feeling the affects of alcohol or medication.

Do you use a microwave oven? Remember that while microwave ovens stay cool, the food inside can become very hot. To avoid a steam burn, use caution when removing covers or plastic wrap from food.

SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES

Do your throw rugs have rubber, non-skid backing? Use only throw rugs with non-skid backing. Smooth out all wrinkles and folds in your rugs and carpets. Is your carpeting wrinkled, torn, or worn? If so, ask for help repairing or replacing the carpeting.

TREAD CAREFULLY

Do you wear high heels, loose shoes, or slippers? Wear sturdy, well-fitted, low-heeled shoes with non-slip soles. These are safer than high heels, thick-soled athletic shoes, slippers, or stocking feet. Do you take any medications?

Have your doctor or pharmacist review all of your medications, including over-the-counter drugs. Some medications can affect your balance and coordination.

IF YOU SMOKE…

If you or anyone in your household smokes, what kind of ashtrays do you use? Large, deep, non-tip ashtrays are best. Wet cigarette butts and ashes before emptying into a wastebasket.

What are your smoking habits? If you smoke, smoke outside. Never smoke when you are drowsy, feeling the affects of alcohol or medication, lying down, or in bed.

GIVE SPACE HEATERS SPACE

How far are your space heaters and portable heaters from things that can burn? Keep anything that can burn, including yourself, at least three feet (one meter) from space heaters, portable heaters, and woodstoves. You should turn off and unplug heaters when you leave your home or go to bed.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

Do you have cracked or frayed electrical cords in your home? Unplug them at once. Have them repaired or replaced. Are there any electrical cords running across doorways or under rugs?

Unplug them at once and move them to a safer location.

BE KITCHEN WISE

What do you wear when you cook?

To avoid catching your clothes on fire, wear clothing with tight-fitting, rolled-up, or short sleeves. Use oven mitts to handle hot pans.

Do you know what to do if your clothes catch on fire? Stop (don’t run), drop gently to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll over and over or back and forth to smother the flames. If you can’t “stop, drop, and roll”, smother the flames with a towel or blanket.

What should you do if you burn yourself? Immerse the burn in cool water for 3 to 5 minutes.

Do you have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside each sleeping area? If not, ask for help installing alarms. A fire can begin anywhere in your home and grow very quickly. In a fire you need the early warning provided by working smoke alarms to get out of your home safely. If you are deaf or hard-ofhearing, consider purchasing alarms with flashing lights. Do you test your smoke alarms?

Test your alarms by pushing the test button at least once a month. Batteries should be changed at least once a year, or whenever the alarm “chirps” to tell you that the battery power is low.

Any smoke alarm that is 10 years old should be replaced.

PLAN AND PRACTICE YOUR ESCAPE

What should you do if there is a fire in your home? Get out as quickly as you can and don’t go back inside for any reason. Once outside, call the fire department from a neighbour’s phone or a cell phone. Do you know two ways out of every room?

Make sure you can open all doors and windows easily. Security bars should be equipped with quick-release devices. Make sure furniture and other heavy objects are not blocking your exits.

If you must escape through smoke, stay low – the cleaner air is near the floor. Do you have limited mobility?

If possible, your bedroom should be located on the first floor of your home so that you can escape faster during an emergency.

Emotional Eckert leads Knights charge STM knocks off top-ranked Fox Ravens to honour fallen coach Grant Granger

Tyler Eckert is a lean, mean football machine, but he struggled to keep his emotions in check.

He should have been ecstatic, not choking back tears. A magnificently powerful performance on the Friday night lights stage, like the one Eckert engineered in his team’s upset of B.C. high school football’s top-ranked squad, normally would result in unbridled elation from a teenage boy.

Not last Friday.

The game had the upmost personal importance to Eckert. And to every one of his teammates.

On offence, Eckert carried the ball 19 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns. On defence, he recorded eight tackles and two quarterback sacks as the fifthranked St.Thomas More Knights shocked the Terry Fox Ravens of Port Coquitlam 15-8 at Percy Perry Stadium in Coquitlam.

The win meant more to STM than just improving to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Eastern conference.

It came less than 36 hours after the funeral of beloved head coach Bernie Kully, who died Sept. 30 after losing a battle with esophageal cancer at the age of 41.

It was Kully who took the stud six-foot-one, 210-pound defensive end and made him the team’s feature running back, too.

“Mr. Kully was like a father to me. Every play was for him out there. Every single player played for him out there,” said Eckert as he stifled sniffles minutes after the win. “I am all Mr. Kully. I wouldn’t be out here without Mr. Kully. Mr. Kully made me what I am.”

Kully’s inspiration was palpable on the field.That became more evident as the game went on.

“You dig deeper every single play. Every single step you dig deeper for Mr. Kully. I wouldn’t do it any other way,” said Eckert.

“Fox is one of the best teams in the province.That was one of the hardest games I’ve played and one of my favourites ever.This is the most meaningful game of my life.”

Fox scored the first points against the STM defence this season five minutes into the first quarter. Quarterback Jevaun Jacobsen hit Albert Arecena with a touchdown toss for a 6-0 Fox lead.

The Ravens extended the lead to 8-0 in the second quarter, when

STM quarterback Dario Ciccone was sacked in his end zone for a safety touch.

In the first half, the Knights defence struggled to deal with Fox’s dynamic duo, as Kully’s successor Steve De Lazzari calls them.That would be Jacobsen and running back Jaden Severy. In the end, though, Jacobsen rushed for 114 yards while Severy had 71.

As the first half wound down, the Ravens were poised to add to

their lead. But Jacobsen was intercepted by STM’s Ethan Austin, who ran it back 50 yards into Terry Fox territory.The pick turned the game around.

Three plays later, Eckert scored on an eight-yard run with 15 seconds left in the half. Ciccone connected with David Osho for a twopoint conversion and an 8-8 tie.

After the catch, Osho pointed to the sky in a tribute to Kully.

“To have it all square at the

half, that was a huge momentum booster.We could see that.

These guys (STM) are a well-conditioned group, and we knew if we kept wearing them down, and kept wearing them down, that was going to start to take over at some point and I think it did,” said De Lazzari, who received defensive game plan tips on how to deal with Fox from Kully in his dying days.

With 4:48 left, and the Knights fourth down with inches to go on the Fox 22, Eckert eschewed going into the clogged line to get the minuscule real estate STM needed.

Instead, he went around the outside for a 22-yard touchdown romp for a 15-8 lead. In the final minute, Fox threatened but, out of timeouts, the clock ran out.

After the initial jubilation, the players gathered and knelt. “He’s smiling upon us,” said one of the team leaders. From there, the celebration with each other and family and friends was subdued. Hugs were prolonged, red eyes were rubbed sore, and tears mixed with sweat were wiped away.

“I’ve been coaching football for 15 years, and this is the most special night ever,” said De Lazzari, choking back sobs. “It’s even bigger than when I won a provincial championship in Grade 12. I put it in that level.The effort these boys put in tonight, and I know we have a ways to go, there’s some excellent teams in this province, but to put that out on the field the way they

did tonight in those circumstances was just amazing. I’m so proud of them.

“There’s raw emotion there, for sure.They feel it.They loved Coach Kully, and that’s showing right now.

That’s a testament to the character of this group and this team.”

De Lazzari admitted Fox was the better team in the first half.

“We were a bit slow, and I had a funny feeling given how the week went that we were going to have a slow start. Our defence, oh my gosh, I think Sam Steele was just at another level today,” said De Lazzari of the nose tackle who racked up 15 tackles and five sacks.

Prior to the game the Ravens were not only rated first in B.C., but eighth in Canada.

“We didn’t play to our potential, I’m not going to take anything away from them, it was a really hard-fought game, I think the emotion really came into it,” said Fox head coach Martin McDonnell.

“We gave them that first touchdown.The coaches will take that one.That was us getting a little bit greedy.

“Hats off to them, they’re a wellcoached team, they came out and did some things we weren’t expecting, they spread us out and we hadn’t seen that all year.

“Three of our coaches were at

the funeral (Thursday).We warned the guys it was going to be like that and it certainly was, they played with a lot of emotion.”

De Lazzari tried to downplay what conquering the top team meant to his squad.

“I’ll be honest, it’s just a step because there’s a lot more for us to give, and there’s a lot of outstanding programs in the province this year. It is so good.This is the most competitive year I can remember in a long time,” he said.

Next up is another team that’s 3-0 in the conference, Surrey’s Lord Tweedsmuir.The Knights will battle the Panthers at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West on Friday (Oct. 13, 7:30 p.m.).

“They’re no easy out either.

They’ve got an excellent team,” said De Lazzari, who was then asked how the Knights adjust their attention after such an emotional week and win.

“My belief is we just come to work on Monday, and we refocus.

We heal up all of the bang-ups from tonight, because that was a hard game, and we just do the exact same process as we did tonight.We break down the film with them and figure out what their tendencies are and figure out what to do.”

This time, though, he won’t have the benefit of Kully’s advice.

Hodgson’s 6 to be retired

After Burnaby’s Curtis Hodgson retired from the Vancouver Stealth last week, the National Lacrosse League team announced it will retire his number 6 at its Feb. 10 game against the Saskatchewan Rush.

It will be the first retired number for the Stealth.

Hodgson, newly appointed vice-principal at Burnaby South Secondary, retired last week after a 13-year NLL career, all with the Stealth organization. During his career he played in 211 of the Stealth’s 216 regular season games and all 15 playoff games during that

time span.

“It is fitting that our first retired jersey will be Curtis Hodgson’s. He has had a remarkable career and has represented the Stealth with class and dignity for over a decade.

We could not be more proud of Curtis and want to honour him in a way that his career deserves,” said Stealth president and general manager Doug Locker in a press release.

Hodgson will remain with the Stealth as director its academy and junior program and will work with the Stealth coaching staff on player development.

Detached Homes Selling Faster in Burnaby and TriCities sales themselves, also picked up in the same week, at $1,342,000 among those 27 sales.

This is higher than the week before, due to several higher-end homes all selling between September 25 and October 1.

With the fall real estate market well under way, the number of home sales may not be rising dramatically right now, but the churn of detached home listings in the Burnaby/TriCities region is speeding up, an analysis of MLS® sold data reveals.

The priciest of these home sales was a $3.9 million house in Burnaby North’s coveted Capitol Hill neighbourhood. This sprawling, rancher-style home is lovely in itself, but its position on a 27,510-square-foot lot with sublime water views would also have attracted the interest of local developers, especially since zoning allows for three separate lots. It sold for $100K under asking after 14 days listed.

The median days on market for a single-family house hit a summer high of around 50 days at the end of August, despite that month being uncharacteristically hot for overall home sales.

Since then, detached homes have been moving noticeably faster, dropping to 42 towards the end of September, and now standing at just 35 as of October 6.

Burnaby North was also the location of the most expensive attached home sale of the week. This was a half-duplex in Sperling that looks a lot like a single-family house, and boasts six bedrooms and four bathrooms.

This immaculate home was built in 2015 and has 2,200 square feet of living space and a 5,184-square-foot lot. The property sold for $1,628,000, just $10K under the ask, after 25 days on market.

The number of single-family home sales increased slightly on a weekly basis, with 27 sales across the region between September 25 and October 1, registered as of October 6.

Attached unit sales held steady from the previous week, just one unit lower at 94 sales.

The median sale price of those attached homes was also consistent with the week before, only a few thousand bucks lower at $551,750.

EMMERSON, David November 22, 1953 - August, 26 2017 Dave passed away August 26th after a short battle with Cancer. Son of the late John and Joan Emmerson (Manning).

Preceded by his sister Sheila Neilson. Survived by his sister Patricia Henderson. David served his community and province as proud member of the BC Sheriff Services for 35 years. He often volunteered his time to speak with numerous school groups that visited the New Westminster Law Courts and spent many years as an Instructor with the Firearms Development program.

As a passionate member of the B.C. Sheriff’s handgun shooting team, he competed professionally and won a number of awards. He was recognized for introducing Court Services to the Pro-Carry belt system equipment, which as a result, was implemented throughout the Fraser Region.

During his career he was the recipient of the Provincial Long Service Award and the Nationally recognized Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal.

Dave will be remembered for his warm personality and professional demeanor.

He will be missed by many friends and family. No service is planned. The family would like to give special thanks to David Morier and the BC Ambulance Service.
