Two-yearold Gemma Pickering dances with a fairy at the annual RhodoFest celebration, held Sunday, May 6 at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and Deer Lake Park. The annual festival, hosted by the City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Rhododendron and Gardens Society, included kids’ activities, entertainment, workshops and tours. The forecast is calling for more sunshine and warm temperatures this weekend.

Anti-pipeline protesters will have their eyes set on Texas today as representatives of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) fly to Houston in hopes of convincing Kinder Morgan shareholders that continuing with the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion is too risky. Protests were also expected at Westridge Marine terminal in Burnaby Wednesday (today). Chief Judy Wilson, of the Neskonlith Indian Band (Secwepemc Nation) and the UBCIC, will be presenting a report on behalf of the State of NewYork – a Kinder Morgan stockholder – at the company’s annual general meeting in Houston. The report outlines social, environmental and financial risks associated with the project. It argues that continued resistance by We will continue Canadian and Infighting against digenous groups demonstrates opthe project … position from multiple jurisdictions, which has already led to significant construction delays. “Kinder Morgan stockholders have not been properly advised that Indigenous rights are recognized in the Canadian Constitution and have won again and again through the courts. Kinder Morgan does not have the required consent of Indigenous Nations along the pipeline and tanker route, and it never will,”Wilson said in a statement. “There is nothing that the Canadian government can do to eliminate the risk and uncertainty inherent in this project. We will continue fighting against the project until it is abandoned.” Meanwhile, a group was set to meet near Kinder Morgan’s Westridge marine terminal this morning. A Facebook event calls for protesters to join “land and water protectors as they take bold action at Kinder Morgan’s Burnaby facilities.”
