THE HEIGHTS

It can be argued that no area in Burnaby has a more interesting history than the Heights. The Heights is one of three hills – Capitol Hill and Burnaby Mountain are the others, each successively higher as you go east – that face Burrard Inlet. Thousands of immigrants came to the area with the opening of Hastings Street in 1902 and the arrival of the streetcar in North Burnaby in 1908. With population growth, the first merchants soon appeared. Many Italians called the Heights home, joining the English and Irish immigrants who had come before. Formed as an official

6

DISCOVER BURNABY 2016

business improvement area in 1994, the Heights Merchants Association focuses on issues affecting the area. The association is involved in activities such as: street beautification efforts, street cleaning, the installation of street banners, the annual Heights business directory, member advocacy, branding the area, decorative street signs and seasonal events, including Hats Off Day. The daylong event kicks off with a parade down Hastings Street while businesses “tip their hats” to customers with activities, food and entertainment throughout the remainder of the day. Many of the stores in the Heights are owned by second and third generation merchants. This is balanced by a wide range of newer stores and services, some run by new immigrants from diverse cultures. This diversity makes the Heights an area that truly feels like a small town with a big heart. For information, go to www.burnabyheights.com.

EDMONDS

The history of Burnaby goes back more than 100 years to 1892, and the Edmonds neighbourhood was at the heart of that history. The city’s first municipal hall was located at the corner of Kingsway and Edmonds. Much has changed since then, but Kingsway is still a major commuter route and with more residential and commercial buildings being built, Edmonds is one of the fastest-growing regions in the city. The big news in recent years was the official opening of the Edmonds Community Centre, which took place in 2013. The facility, the first community centre to be built in the city in more than 20 years, is double the size of the Bonsor Recreation Complex and includes 90,000 square feet of space, including a double gymnasium, a six-lane 25-metre lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub and sauna. The double gym provides space for badminton, basketball and floor hockey, and there is also a multipurpose area, a child care area, studio space, a youth centre, martial arts, and space for seniors. A fitness centre, along with 200 parking spaces, is also included in the state-of-the-art centre. The area has undergone a multitude of new developments in the last decade. It all began with the redevelopment of the old Middlegate Mall into the state-ofthe-art HighGate Village. Soon afterwards, the new Tommy Douglas Library opened in the heart of Edmonds and it is already being lauded as one of the best libraries in the Lower Mainland. Edmonds is also home to the Nikkei Place, which includes the National Nikkei Heritage Centre and the Japanese Canadian National Museum. Edmonds is also known for its multicultural mix of residents, with many Eastern European and African immigrants happy to call Edmonds home. The benefit for gourmets is that means Edmonds has one of the most varied mix of restaurants anywhere in the Lower Mainland. Traditional Italian, Greek and Chinese restaurants are joined by Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Nigerian and Indian restaurants.

MARKET CROSSING

Burnaby’s newest shopping mecca is Market Crossing in the Big Bend area.

The area has been transformed into Burnaby’s latest must-stop shopping location, as its mix of stores, restaurants and services is unparalleled in the city. The area also includes pristine parkland, river views and the Riverway Golf Course, which is amongst the toughest and best courses in the Lower Mainland. What was formerly

farmland and a quiet, untraveled area is now one of the city’s busiest areas, with stores on both sides of Marine Way near Byrne Road. If you’re looking for great food, the Cactus Club is already one of the most popular meeting places in the area. The eatery recently won “Best Patio” in the Best of Burnaby awards. Market Crossing is proving popular for Burnaby, New Westminster and South Vancouver residents, who find it easily accessible by car, with ample free parking.

Working together for you. Enjoy all that Burnaby has to offer!

DINING WITH A VIEW

Burnaby is one of the most picturesque cities in the Lower Mainland, so it’s no surprise that several local restaurants have some of the best views. Here’s our choices for the best places to get a great meal and a great view at the same time. Horizons Restaurant at Burnaby Mountain has been around for more

than two decades and with great food and stunning mountain views, it’s easy to see why. Horizons at 100 Centennial Way is truly fine dining with a view. For reservations or info, call 604-299-1155 or go to www.horizonsrestaurant.com. For a spectacular lake view, Hart House at 6664 Deer Lake Ave. can’t be beat. The pastoral setting goes perfectly with the Hart House’s fine dining. For reservations or info, call 604-298-4278 or go to www. harthouserestaurant.com. Two underrated fine dining restaurants with a view are the ebo Restaurant and Lounge in the Delta Burnaby Hotel, which offers a great view of the North Shore mountains, and Reflect Social Dining and Lounge at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, which has a patio that offers great views of South Burnaby. ebo is located at 4331 Dominion St. Call 604-4530788 or go to www.eborestaurant. com for more info. Reflect at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown is located at 6083 McKay Ave. For more info, call 604-438-1200.

TRAVEL THE WORLD WITH A PLATE

Burnaby has no shortage of great ethnic dining options. From Oriental to African to South American, you can literally travel the world with your taste buds in Burnaby. There are too many great ethnic restaurants to list here, but here are three favourites that take you from Africa to Mexico and then Japan. If Indian food is more your flavour, check out Burnaby’s Agra Tandoori. Their butter chicken is a favourite among online foodies, plus they have a lengthy menu with lots of vegetarian options for anyone who doesn’t eat meat, including aloo ghobi, shahee paneer and malai kofta. Located at 110-3790 Canada Way, Agra Tandoori is open everyday for both lunch and dinner. Call 604-4301600 for more info. Finding good Asian food isn’t difficult in Burnaby, but one of the best is Take Sushi Japanese Restaurant at 4528 East Hastings St. in the Heights. Owner and chef Jason Zhang has spent the past years putting together a unique menu that focuses on freshness, affordability and new flavours. Try the tuna and mango salad and you won’t look at salad the same again. For more info, call 604-291-7241.

FOOD ON THE RUN

Even if you don’t have time to sit, you can still have a great meal in Burnaby. These three spots offer great food that you can take with you. The Ice Cream Parlour at Burnaby Village Museum at 6501 Deer Lake Ave. is one of the best-kept secrets in the city. You can get everything from butter chicken to fish and chips to go. And don’t forget some ice cream as well. There’s no more iconic takeout food than pizza and Burnaby has its fair share of great pizza joints. A popular Burnaby favourite is Stan’s Pizza Joint at 4527 Hastings St. where business partners Judith Gauge and Stan Reid offer up delicious pizza at great prices. Call 604-

For people who want to explore their creative side, talented instructors at the Shadbolt offer classes in dance, music, visual arts, ceramics, theatre, and literary arts for all skill levels. Now is the perfect time to dust off your dance shoes, pull out those paint brushes, and pick up that old guitar in the corner. For more info, go to www.shadboltcentre.com. Next door, the Burnaby Art Gallery stores its collection in an offsite climate-controlled environment. Original hand-pulled prints comprise 80 percent of the collection. Ten percent are drawings and collages and the remaining 10 percent are paintings and objects. There are approximately 4,250 catalogued works of art that make up the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection and Education Collection. For more info, go to www. burnabyartgallery.ca. North Burnaby also has an arty side. Every year residents are invited to celebrate art at the Gamma Garage show in April. The North Burnaby art group has been hosting the annual show for 13 years now, after a small group of artists decided to open the doors of their garage studio to curious friends and neighbours. Since then, the Gamma Garage art show has become a favourite in the Burnaby art scene, often featuring special guest artists along with members of the North Burnaby art group. Find more about the Gamma Garage event on Facebook. DISCOVER BURNABY 2016

A DIVERSE COMMUNITY One thing Burnaby has in abundance is diversity – and there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate Burnaby’s diversity and culture throughout the year. In March, the Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Sikh temple in Burnaby celebrates the birth anniversary of their guru, a 15th century saint who called for a casteless society, with a Nagar Kirtan Parade. Each years, hundreds of revellers pour into the streets of South Burnaby and march for hours through the community. The event also includes food and a historical exhibit at the temple at 7271 Gilley Ave. In May, the Burnaby-based Tian-Jin Temple hosts an annual festival featuring food, games and entertainment, including a traditional puppet show and a drumming demonstration. There is also a martial arts performance and craft booths for kids. The annual Tian-Jin festival is usually a two-day celebration, which happens on a weekend in early May. For more info: www.tianjintemple.org or call 604-568-9880. Also in May, the City of Burnaby, in collaboration with the Burnaby Rhododendron and Gardens Society, holds its ever-popular Rhododendron Festival. The free day-long festival takes place each year at Deer Lake Park, near the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. The focus of the festival is to promote sustainable ecological health. Highlights include variety entertainment, rovers, mini-workshops, horticultural and nature tours, a silent auction, artisan, pottery and plant sales, and interactive arts activities.
