Bathroom Ideas to Rejuvenate Your Space
I
nterior designers at Oliver Simon Design, Greer Nelson and Jamie Hamilton, share their expert advice when it comes to creating the perfect sanctuary bathroom setting.
1
Custom hidden storage
Bathrooms are typically filled with lots of little unsightly necessities – things crucial to existence, but not very pretty to look at. The secret to a beautiful bathroom is to build the right type of storage to ensure those necessities can be tucked away neatly and discreetly. Trays also work well to keep jewelry or other small pieces together. Let’s put it this way, we love trays so much, for their decorative appeal and functionality, that we don’t do a bathroom – or almost any room – without one.
2
Create natural light
If you are doing a renovation, make sure you bring in a window, if possible. It’s always wise to have as much natural light as possible in a bathroom. A good-sized window provides the right kind of lighting for doing your makeup, makes the overall bathroom space feel larger and allows for the flow of humid air.

Add an organic
Another great way to soften a bathroom’s hard surfaces is by adding earthy pieces such as baskets, wood trays or plants. Other options include an antique or new rug, fabric roman shades – just something to soften the space and add warmth to the bathroom.
4
Opt for pattern
There are a few ways to bring pattern into the bathroom: wallpaper, painted tile, or by installing tile in a patterned format. For example, place the tile in a classic, ever-stylish herringbone pattern, or a brick-lay pattern. Introducing pattern offsets the many hard surfaces – counters, vanities, tubs – and breaks the monotony.
5
A designer finish
Everybody always thinks about accessories in the living room, but bathrooms need those finishing touches just as much. Accessorizing adds personality and a focal point of interest to a bathroom. To achieve a finished, designer look, put a piece of art on the wall or add a beautiful rug. We also really love hits of black in a bathroom for added drama.

an you tell me about your own entry into cabin ownership and renovating? We used to stay at a friend’s cabin in Muskoka and just loved the escapism of the whole experience. To wake up in the woods, on a lake surrounded by nature, was just intoxicating. We then bought with friends before selling up and going it alone. What’s the status of Cabin Pressure? We’re still looking for another cabin to renovate – or perhaps even an island property in the Caribbean, as we both love designing holiday homes. Tackling vacation homes allows us to add an extra layer of escapism, and to breathe new life into needy properties. We often maintain that holidays should provide a better existence than regular lives, and holiday accommodation should follow suit and provide a better place to lay one’s head than one’s regular abode. So if your holiday home is full of old cast-off family furniture, you’re doing yourself a tremendous disservice – you deserve a 5-star, not a 2-star, escape.

The bunkhouse bunkies were featured on Colin and Justin’s Cabin Fever, which chronicles their renovations in Ontario’s cottage country. The bunkhouse is adjunct to the main cottage, and features a dining area and ‘wee’ shower room along with the four beds.
2.
The sloping Western Red Cedar ceiling and vintage barn doors add earthy warmth and a wow factor to this cabin bedroom.
How many cabins have you renovated at this point? One log cabin in Muskoka and two cottages in Haliburton, Ontario (all of which we’ve personally owned), as well as several client project cabins across Ontario and upstate New York.

What do you love about cabin life? Having a second home out of the city makes a huge difference to one’s overall ‘self’ – put simply, it restores equilibrium. A rural home, as we see it, is a reward that just keeps giving. To escape the hustle and bustle, chill out on the dock, swim in the lake, enjoy the wildlife and sit around a campfire may sound cornily Canadian, but come on: the foregoing pursuits are truly some of the greatest things to do during downtime. Beer, wine and cocktails are a given – as are great friends and neighbours.
1
Do you spend winters in your cabin? We love being at the cabin when it’s chilly; we’re fully winterized and have a log burning stove for extra heat and drama. We also have a Solus gas bowl outside on our cedar deck and frequently light that in the snow, and sit there drinking hot chocolate and bourbon. We are part of our road association and pay to have the roads and driveways snowploughed by a subcontractor – there’s no point having a winter getaway if you can’t get to it, right? What are some design issues that you have encountered that are unique to cabin renos/design?

Expert tip: Warm up with vinyl For us there’s nothing more warming than listening to vinyl, especially Christmas records in the holiday season. Crosley makes a great range of retro record players that are guaranteed to give you that Nat King Cole feeling with each play.
If you’ve ever renovated in the city and encountered problems getting deliveries and contractors on time, then you can magnify that tenfold out in the wilderness! There are so few contractors, and they’re all so busy, so if you manage to find a good ’un, it could be that they might just be able to start your project – next year! We have one post code for the entire county – and are at the end of a privately owned dirt track road – so deliveries have to be exact: we give the drivers our numbers and get them to call in as they get close to the site. If necessary, we’ll get in the car and meet them at the nearest town, before escorting them back to our cabin. We’ve had deliveries from Toronto, three hours away, that have turned back, 15 minutes from us, because they couldn’t find the address. You must also make sure you have the materials needed for each job on site before you start. The last thing you want is to have to drive for two hours to the nearest Home Depot while your paid-by-the-hour plumber sits and waits for a part. Aye, military precision is needed. How about those who aren’t fortunate enough to have a cabin, how can they bring the feel of a cabin into their home? Follow the design rules outlined here and apply them in moderation to your metropolitan home. Balance man-made and natural elements to create your own look and hang escapist outdoor inspired vintage artwork – ski posters, train journeys, etc. to create a travelled look. What are some mistakes people make with cabin design/décor and/or winterizing their cabin? People tend to buy home items in isolation without thinking about the overall picture, buying a lamp here and a rug there without thinking about the design. To fail to plan is to plan to fail, so get your ideas down on paper before you shop and give yourself an idea of the look you hope to achieve. That way you’ll save time and money in the long run and avoid costly mistakes.
it gently dispenses is 100 per cent pure country escapism. Recently, we transformed a basement in our rental cabin into a cedar-lined whisky room and guests love it. We also love engineered timber floors. Made up of layers of wood, bonded together with adhesive, engineered floors are rigid and can easily cope with changes in heat and humidity, making them perfect for cabins. We use Kentwood Floors – their Sculpted Oak Cougar Rock from Metropolitan Floors, www.metrofloors.com is amazing thanks to its wide-plank appearance, rewarding warm tones and the way it so beautifully compliments the other timbers in the home. Colin and Justin cabins are all about using reclaimed timber – we clad kitchen islands with it and have used it for wood walls and barn doors. Our reclaimed specialist is Rebarn in Toronto, www.rebarn. ca. They’re amazing and also make custom tables and benches, too. Come on, anything you can do to elevate your home is a good thing.
What are some of the building materials you love to work with that elevate the cabin feel/look? And what do you like about those materials, or why do you choose them? Our signature style involves lots of glass – we love to blow out walls in small bedrooms or knock out dark corners of a room (and then completely glaze them) to make more of the light and available views. We generally use custom units from Euro Vinyl Windows and Doors Inc. as they make to order and can provide exactly what we require. Western red cedar is our timber of choice – contractors and designers love it. If you want a craftsman to deliver good work, give them a quality product to work with: our last contractor called our deck the Rolls Royce of decks as it was such a beautiful project due to its cedar construction. We love the way it silvers with age and the aroma FALL 2017 | SPACE | 19

hy close the cabin down for winter? Make the best of all the time you can at your favourite getaway with these tips for taking the cottage from a summer home to a winter haven. Or try out a few of Colin and Justin’s favourite cabin accessories to bring the cozy cabin vibes to your everyday home.
There’s nothing more warming than the flickering light of a good scented candle – we love Cedar Cabin from the Whitewater Premium Candle Company and The North candle collection from the Vancouver Candle Company.
Blankets
Lighting
Pile up blankets, throws and cushions to add colour and comfort – we love Scottish wool blankets from Anta. The Cairngorm wool throw is gorgeous. Shop around: we got two Lillunn Norwegian wool throws and a Gucci blanket from HomeSense last year – result!
You can really cosy up a room with the right lighting, so fit dimmer switches to overhead lights to dim down the mood at the twist of a button. Use pairs of table lamps to create warm pools of light over a console table or a credenza. Diffused light is gentler, so go for shades over exposed bulbs or dim down a vintage filament bulb to create a glow. The Franklin table lamp from Urban Barn has excellent cabin credentials.
20 | SPACE | FALL 2017
Add an ensuite shower room If possible, transform a master bedroom into a suite by adding a dedicated shower room. Having one’s own bathroom is amazing in the city, but even more indulgent in cottage country.
Transform your basement We redesigned a log cabin’s drywalled basement from bare storage space into a bedroom, shower room and TV room. And, while we were at it, we clad the entire area in timber so it would echo the “loggy” nature of the home above. A dead dated space effectively, after some auspicious restyling, became a luxury inclusion and an investment lift.
Give your cottage a clear design identity When we redesigned a log cabin’s interior, we transformed its aesthetic from dated rental home style to luxe lodge chic. And we transformed it all with our choice of furniture and accessories, rather than via a major rebuild. Using second-hand furniture pieces adds heritage, while luxury faux antler chandeliers, a reclaimed hemlock table and a modern grey sectional helped us perfectly balance country and modern style.
Comfort = Luxury Colin & Justin say:
You can create a new kitchen for less If your cottage kitchen is a little dated, then swap out the tired counters for butcher block timber from Ikea. Rub wooden cabinets down with sand-paper before applying several coats of satin–finish paint using a small foam roller to tempt slick, bristle-free results. Thin coats build up to provide strength and colour density, so take your time. What’s the rush? Add new handles (Lee Valley has great options) under cabinet lighting and new appliances and your old kitchen will look as good as new before you know it.
Make more of the views So many Canadian cottages are situated in the most beautiful countryside locations, yet many have small windows that effectively shut the view out when indoors. During previous projects we’ve cut entire walls out of cottage guest rooms and installed full height windows to allow our friends to connect with the great outdoors from the comfort of their C+J Home linen-attired beds. Hey, go big or go home!
It’s worth spending a bit more on comfort, so do your best with your choice of bed, chairs and sofa to amplify the luxe factor. Choose lambs-wool or cashmere mix throws to indulge and use feather filled cushions (rather than foam) for extra thickness.
Create Atmosphere Use lighting to adjust mood and, in doing so, make far more of your cottage. From simply adding a dimmer switch to installing an overhead fixture (easy and inexpensive) to using table lamps to create mood and focus, your choice of lighting will really up the luxury factor.
Take the luxe lifestyle outdoors Building a dedicated fire pit or outdoor fireplace really enhances the cabin experience as it allows everyone to stay outdoors for longer.
Give it a name We named both our last and current cottage and then had a guest book, towels, beach bags and slippers monogrammed to celebrate the name. Treating your home like an exclusive hotel will make you proud of it and give your guests a fun luxury extra touch when they come to visit.

ive, work, play – it’s a discussion that often comes up in the workplace but these days, it’s also a way of looking at home design. With help from interior designer Lori Steeves, it’s a balance that Port Coquitlam couple Klaus Haertel and Marie Hunter have found in spades. The pair, who both work from home, wanted to create a space that permitted easy entertaining – openness and flexibility for the frequent guests to their home – while maintaining a calm and cozy sense of home, all while maximizing the space in their new townhouse. Or, as Haertel puts it: “Room for entertaining and room for relaxing. We both work from home so it was important to have a place where we can take our afternoon coffee break during the day, have plenty of room to host dinner parties as well as space for enjoying a lazy Sunday morning.” Steeves notes that she sits down with clients to discuss goals and preferences before any work begins. “We start every project the same way with the same process,” said Steeves. “It helps the client really delve into and explore their own taste, explore their priorities, and think about their budget.” In this case, the clients knew what was important to them, and a survey of other designs showed a bent toward a clean, simple, modern aesthetic. The couple had said they wanted to maximize the sense of space in the townhouse but even they were surprised by how well Steeves pulled off this request while still making the home welcoming and intimate.

“In the end, the space actually looked bigger than it did without furniture. On top of that, when the design was done, it felt like home,” said Haertel. Steeves made a point of choosing low-profile furniture – sofas that wouldn’t block windows, benches at the dining table and bar stools that tucked under the counter, for example. “All of those things keep the space low, your eyes glide over everything without anything large jarring that visual effect, and it makes the upper part of the room feel bigger and open,” she said. But it can’t just look good, notes Steeves; it has to be cozy and comfortable, too. Small details help, like removable headrests on the couch that can be popped in when you want to lay back and watch a movie, and can be pulled back off for a sleeker look at other times. She also created a sense of space by using feature walls of wallpaper, for definition, but otherwise sticking to pale walls and muted furniture. Finally, multi-functioning pieces keep the space from being cluttered. A large ottoman can be used as a side table, as extra seating in the living room or even as a chair at the table if required. Steeves says many people don’t realize how much can be accomplished in a space with professional design. “Sometimes there’s a rush to renovation when in fact a good design may really change the space the way the client had hoped for,” she said. See www.simplyhomedecorating.com for more.

inimalism is all about decluttering and keeping only the items that have a function in the space. Think clean lines and hard materials like glass, marble and metallics. Luxe minimalism adds a more softened and enriched feel to the minimalistic space. For fall, consider adding luxurious materials to the mix like velvet in deep jewel tones.

Comfort Never Felt So Good As the chill of winter approaches, it’s a good time to ensure that your furnace is working at optimum efficiency. However, many are choosing to buy new, energy efficient ones. If you have a 15 to 20 year old furnace, you are spending more money heating your home than the newer models. According to Serge Laredo, principal/owner of Moore & Russell Heating & Cooling, today’s furnaces are 98 per cent efficient. “With an older model, 60 per cent of your furnace heats your home, while the other 40 per cent goes up the chimney or through the vents,” explains Laredo. “For newer energy efficient models, you save 30 per cent on your monthly gas bill.” When home owners invest in an energy efficient furnace, they benefit from lower monthly heating
bills, and they are eligible to receive a Fortis BC rebate worth up to $1,000. (Rebates run until December 31, 2017). “The new furnaces are better on the environment, and your home will be more comfortable to live in,” he says, adding its often not economically worth fixing an older furnace, as repair costs can be as much as $700. Moore and Russell are also making sure that those less fortunate don’t go without heat this winter. As part of BC Hydro’s Heat Up BC Program, recently Laredo and his team provided free materials, labour and brought breakfast and lunch to a family in need.
TIPS ON KEEPING WARM THIS WINTER ■ A well-maintained furnace will always run more efficiently ■ Conserve energy by purchasing a programmable thermostat to control heat and coolness. ■ To save money on your heating bill and sleep more comfortably, lower the thermostat before you go to bed
“We were honoured to partner with Lennox, (who donated a new furnace), for this worthwhile program,” adds Laredo.

Business Profile The first step to getting the perfect remodel is to identify goals, priorities, budget and the look of your space. A professional designer can help you achieve this and get into the finer details of picking quality materials and finishes to polish your desired effect. “Visiting specialty design showrooms for plumbing, lighting, flooring, cabinets, etc. can be overwhelming and time consuming,” says Michelle Bernier, interior designer/ principal of Michelle Dupré Design & Company, a fully integrated, customized company and showroom offering everything from home renovations,
MICHELLE DUPRÉ DESIGN & COMPANY
consultations and staging services.Working with a designer will help you effortlessly navigate through this entire process as the style board is already created for you. The professional, award-winning designer has helped clients maneuver through creative projects with ease. “For any project, big or small, I need to know my clients’ budget. Then we discuss what styles, colours and patterns they like, and most importantly, what they don’t like,” Bernier explains. “From there, we add inspiration for a realistic plan to achieve their dream look.”
EXPERT TIPS Kitchen Work Triangle A good kitchen layout will allow you to move easily between the three most important elements in your kitchen, the stove, the refrigerator and the sink. Make Your Kitchen Multifunctional Look to create a kitchen design that is open and inviting, and that can facilitate entertaining. Consider Your Cabinets Your cabinet layout should be organized according to how you use the space. Customize your kitchen to your needs and requirements.
