Editor’s Note “If you love something, it will work. That’s the only real rule.” — BunnyWilliams Spring – that time of year when we pull back the curtains and let the light shine in (of course, this is after we get the windows cleaned – or is that just the way it is at my house?). It is a beautiful time of year to be inside and outside. In this edition of SPACE, we get outside in the grass with designer Jennifer Rudolph’s charming outdoor tent – an ideal way to keep the little ones entertained in the backyard. (Those tents are also fun for the big “kids” to carry along to music festivals.) We also look up some local home décor lines and stores we are loving these days, including New Westminster-based Plaj Towels. Made with soft Turkish cotton, the gorgeously textured towels transition beautifully from the indoors to the outdoors. We get a peek inside three stunning designer homes – two in the Tri-Cities and one in New Westminster – that let the light shine in all year round.

VistaView large opening retractable screen doors fill a big need Wizard Industries is a gamechanger when it comes to screen door technology. The Burnaby-based company’s latest innovation is VistaView, a retractable screen door designed specifically for large openings such as bifold and stacking door sys-tems. “This product was developed to really fill the need that’s developing in modern home construction and renovation, where people are adding these massive bifold and stacking door systems to their homes,” says Darrell Bedford of Wiz-ard Industries. While the large openings offer stunning views and easy ac-cess to outdoor living spaces until recently there were really no compatible screen doors available to keep out insects and high winds. Wizard’s VistaView large opening retractable screen can cover openings up to nearly 30 feet wide and feature a se-cure zippered track to guard against blowouts in high winds. his New West family of three wanted to take their dark bungalow and open it up to let the light shine in. And that’s precisely what Shift Interiors, along with the team at Klondike Contracting Corporation, did with this Queen’s Park stunner, which was taken down to the studs, and even reconfigured, to allow for an updated floor plan. “We made it more white and a lot more fresh,” explains Shift director and designer Jamie Deck. “We changed their main living space into an open-concept living space. And then we updated all of the bedrooms and made a big home office with built-ins.” One of the toughest decisions was whether to lose an existing powder room on the main floor to allow for more space for a larger entrance. In the end, the couple went with the option to forgo the powder room, which meant their daughter could have a lovely wooden storage bench at the entrance where she could neatly tuck away her stuff. While the living space was reconfigured, the bedrooms stayed where they were on the main floor, but contInUed On page 21

■ DESIGN WITH CONFIDENCE • HOME RENOVATIONS
Tips expert
■ Touches like heated floors, towel bars and glass tiles will give your bathroom a luxurious feeling that you will enjoy for years. ■ Renovating your kitchen? Save room in your budget for space saving and storage solutions. You will enjoy having a wellorganized, cooking space – it’s a great feeling when everything has a home! ■ Adding some deep colours and hues will enhance the mood in the boudoir and provide a restful sleep. Accenting the bedroom with pillows and a beautiful throw will add some drama. ■ The key to a welldesigned neutral room is adding layers of textures and patterns within the neutral color palette. ■ For a quick spruce-up, add a bold hit of colour in an unexpected way to create interest. Best part? It’s easy to change out if you get tired of it.

adding personality and a personal touch to your home A home renovation project can be stressful. Whether it’s calling someone in to rip out your bathroom flooring or deciding which cabinetry goes with the new kitchen backsplash, the process can be overwhelming. That’s where Michelle Bernier with Design with Confidence comes in. In 2013, she opened up the interior design store at the corner of 12th Street and 10th Avenue in New Westminster. It has since become a one-stop shop for all reno projects. From fabrics and flooring to blinds and shelving, her team does it all. “We do small to large projects, as well as full interior renovations, from start to finish,” says Michelle, who used to be an accountant before following her true passion more than a decade ago. Other services offered at Design with Confidence include upholstery work, custom closets,
wall papering and staging for when someone’s ready to sell their home. Bored with how your living room looks? Michelle also provides a redesign service, where she comes in and gives expert advice on furniture placement and what can be added to make the space pop. “Your home is such a personal part of you. It just makes you feel good and I think that improves your life overall,” she says. Clients can expect a very hands-on approach from this local entrepreneur, who is involved every step of the way. She usually picks three samples of an item – based on the person’s vision – and then lets them choose. “We break it down, see what goes well together, but it also has to have an unexpected flair,” she says. “I try to add some of their personality to it, so we spend lots of time picking out fabrics and materials.” Besides being at
the helm of the little blue brick and mortar shop, Michelle’s business model includes giving back to the community she lives in by “painting hope into people’s lives.” Michelle donates paint and labour to women who have suffered physical or emotional abuse and are living in transitional housing. “They can come in, pick the colours they want, and we’ll go to their place and paint. A lot of those places are pretty drab when you move in,” she explains. It seems like there’s no slowing down for this busy woman, who earned The Record’s best interior design store in New West for 2015. She just opened a sister store, Color With Confidence. which is a retail Para Paint and wallpaper store. “I get up around six every morning and I’m home by eight, seven days a week,” she laughs.

the interiors changed significantly. The daughter’s room included a built-in sitting area and convenient shelving. The pink room is charming without being too young. It’s a room the daughter can grow with for many years, which was Deck’s strategy. “We definitely do timeless design for all of our clients,” she says, noting that one of the advantages of hiring a designer is that they are thinking in the now and the future. (Right) The bungalow’s kitchen, dining and living room were completely reconfigured, the bedrooms remained intact, but were transformed with custom built-ins, wallpaper, and sophisticated decor.

his Coquitlam townhome featured a unique and somewhat challenging space for the pros at Fox Design Studio. With five levels, there was a hefty footprint overall, but each floor had only about 350 square feet. It was up to lead designer Ben Leavitt and his team to make every inch count in the newly built home. “One of the biggest challenges is making a space that is so tight seem full of interesting things, that’s not cluttered,” Leavitt

The basement has a man cave with a home theatre space and an entrance way to the carport. “They definitely get a leg workout in that house,” Leavitt says. The young family wanted the townhouse to be fun, vibrant and interesting to offset Vancouver’s many grey days. They kept the walls a clean white – except in the master, where they wallpapered with blue grasscloth – but added colours in the throws, carpets and accessories. The wife was after a modern, slightly mid-century look, while the husband wanted something somewhat industrial. In the interest of making them both happy, Leavitt mixed the two looks in the space. Merging different style is something Leavitt is used to doing; it’s the hallmark of his aesthetic. “My style, and the style of my company, every space we do is eclectic, so we like to borrow from every style,” he says. “Mid-century, industrial, traditional – a little bit of everything in the space, so when the homeowner brings in their own things when we’re done with the space, it doesn’t have to be so perfectly in-line with any specific theme, because there is a little bit of everything going on.”
The baby’s room is Ben Leavitt’s favourite space in the home.“They wanted me to kind of play with the idea of travel in her room,” says Leavitt, who included prints he found on his travels toVietnam. The gold stripes on the ceiling and walls were meant to invoke the fun feeling of a tent.

■ REAL ESTATE - PATTI & WES GOSS, REMAX ADVANTAGE REALTY
Tips expert
■ Working with a team provides sellers and buyers with better coverage. With so many details to take care of, it’s sometimes difficult for a solo agent to get through all the tasks that occur daily. ■ Ask to see the agent’s buyers or sellers guide. It’ll give you a general overview of how the whole process works. ■ When listing your home, ask if the agent will be present at all showings. Will they arrive early to ensure the lights are on, blinds are up, etc. and to answer any questions the buyer and their agent may have? ■ Looking for the perfect home requires patience. Try not to stress out. ■ Consider using a home stager if your property is vacant or your home is in need of a refresh.

staying ahead of the pack The Goss name has been synonymous with “success” in the real estate industry for more than 25 years –and it’s easy to see why. From day one, when Patti Goss sold her first home on Ladner Street in New Westminster, she has done nothing but deliver top-notch service and expertise to her clients, making her one of the best in the biz. One of the perks of teaming up with this veteran realtor is a buyer’s and seller’s guide, researched and designed by Patti’s son and business partner, Wes. “A lot of people don’t understand the whole process,” says Patti. “This is a great resource for anyone looking to list or get into the market.” Clients are also spoiled
with a Christmas party, private shopping evenings, a skating Christmas party at Moody Park, a lawn bowling barbecue and tickets to the annual B.C. Home and Garden Show and the Vancouver Home and Design Show. “You can’t just be run-of-themill. You have to do things that make you stand out from all the rest,” adds Patti. But the Goss business model goes beyond these thoughtful benefits. The mother-and-son duo are heavily involved in the community and are always giving back. For two decades, Patti has participated in Meals on Wheels, bringing warm lunches to seniors unable to prepare food for themselves. Wes has followed suit in the last few years. The Goss team also donates
a percentage of each sale to the Children’s Miracle Network and to KidSport. Other sponsorship initiatives include the New Westminster Cultural Crawl and the New Westminster Youth Ambassador Society. At Christmas time, the office holds a blanket drive. “We live and work here. For us, it’s not just about connecting with our clientele, but with the people who make up the entire fabric of this city,” she says. The real estate industry, meanwhile, looks a lot different than it did 25 years ago. “This custom home’s design was inspired by its location on the water.Two-tone kitchen cabinets, a metallic backsplash, and hints of blue and grey create a beachy feel while wideplank hickory flooring adds a rustic warmth to the space. The decor was kept in a neutral, complementary palette that reflects the beauty of the incredible view.” - Amanda Evans
A
newly crafted custom home on the water in Port Moody – sounds like a designer’s dream. And, so, not surprisingly, what Amanda Evans, of Twenty One Two Designs Inc., managed to achieve with this luxury home is nothing short of stunning. The client, a single woman with a passion for crafting and her large pups, was having a new home built on the edge of the water on Ioco Road. “It’s on the water in Port Moody, so she really wanted
something that reflected the West Coast feel but still be cozy,” Evans explains, adding that to achieve the balance they brought in cool blue accents, raw wood materials and crown mouldings. Evans favourite room in the home is the spacious kitchen, which has two-tone cabinets and sleek yet durable quartz countertops. “I love the mix of materials, how it still feels warm even though the cabinets are blue, and the countertop is just so beautiful,” she says. One of the stand-out areas in the kitchen features a

wine fridge and striking blue-tone glass mosaic backsplash and wooden shelving. The dining room features a blue built-in buffet that adds colour to the warm space. Finding the rich hickory flooring took time, Evans says. “[The client] really wanted the warmth of hickory and a wide-plank flooring, but also something that could withstand 100-pound dogs, so that really took a lot of time,” she says. Ultimately, the waterfront home balances the beauty just outside its door with a clean, refined feel.

Summertime, nature and the great outdoors – from all these sources we draw inspiration, but my children were the catalyst to get this recent project going. After attending the Scandinavian midsummer festival on summer solstice last year, I was inspired by the set up of authentic Viking tents giving us a sneak peek into the history of Nordic life without amenities. Life may not have been easy back then, but the nature of their homes were styled very simply, and in the simplicity, comfort. As any parent knows all too well, when the summer months hit, we’re always in search of ways to keep our kids entertained outside. Tried and true basics with a hint of originality will have you and your kids feeling like you’ve hit the playtime jackpot. You can customize an outdoor campsite, drawing off of concepts that your children love. Build the design with any creative inspiration that hits you;
a storybook theme, children’s theatre play, any outdoor activity, the options are endless. My client profile: a couple of cute Rugians with a modest budget, a little unruly but a barrel load of enthusiasm. The Nordic-style tents fashioned at the festival had a perfect balance of natural durability and grounded elements, great for active kids and the outdoors. We carried the use of natural materials of wood and organic fabrics using natural dyes, as well as simple but abundant comforts and paired them with some unexpected modern elements. We added the movie theatre dog art to inject vibrancy and colour in an unexpected visual. Setting a tone that says we’re here to have fun. We kept a relatively simple colour palette of white, grey, blue and red. All of the patterns were graphic, and done using a simple woven stitch technique which is indicative of Scandinavian handmade linens. Drawing on some truly local resources, we salvaged a neighbour’s tree trimmings to create a campfire. The lanterns and retro badminton rackets were great finds at a local thrift store. I have seen tents fashioned out of various materials, however this project called for simple material and was designed with a basic variation of the mortise and tenon wood construction. The
design is easy to assemble without requiring various small parts. We used a white canvas sheet for a canopy, however, this is a great opportunity to make it your own design, using striped fabric for a nautical or carnival theme, floral pattern or a myriad of other whimsical patterned fabrics that are geared towards imaginative young minds. The option to set up an outdoor movie night at this campsite builds on the different ways to use the tent, making the functionality all the more dynamic. Why not embrace the summer ritual of outdoor family movie night every weekend in your own backyard, building memories to treasure for years to come? As our photo shoot started to wind up and the dark of night was setting in,
the environment inspired the opportunity to light the lanterns and venture on a walk through our garden path, in search of sleeping gnomes. Once you start in on a concept, there are endless ideas and inspiration that unfolds. At the end of the day, it’s all about creativity, imagination, connection and feeling inspired with the ones we love.

You’re relatively new to the design field, can you tell me about the namesake firm you recently launched? Erin Michelle Design is a full service interior design company based in New Westminster. I handle everything from renovations to styling the finishing touches. We moved to New West about a year and a half ago and immediately fell in love with its quaint community feel (a rarity in the Lower Mainland). Everyone is so supportive of one another here, it is the perfect place to call homebase for a new business. You have a gorgeous aesthetic … Can you describe it in your own words? Well, thanks! Overall, I am always striving for comfort. Honestly, it is my life goal. But there has to be a balance. You don’t want to fall into the sloppy category. Relaxed yet refined, I like to say. My personal style would be a little west coast, a little industrial, a lot playful and definitely not fussy. You recently wrote a blog about the importance of adding “real life” greenery to a living space. How and where do you suggest clients add that greenery? I love incorporating “real life” in my designs. Not only is it visually pleasing
to add some greenery, it is good for your health. Isn’t that reason enough? I love a fig tree, in an oversized woven basket, in a living room as it is a high-traffic area and can be most enjoyed there. If a large tree scares you, a big vase full of eucalyptus leaves is a great place to start. Potted succulents and hanging air plants are another great versatile option and look great just about anywhere. There really are no limitations. I really love your blog; I know it’s still early days, but do you plan to keep it up? Are you enjoying it? I am really enjoying it! It is a great creative outlet and a fun source of SPRING 2016 | Space | 35
inspiration for me. Once things settle down and I find a good groove I am hoping to have more time to maintain it. So stay tuned. The images you use are incredibly beautiful and inspiring.Where do you find inspiration? Most of the time I find inspiration through Pinterest. But it can be scary; I’ve been lost on Pinterest for hours without realizing the time. I also follow a lot of inspiring interior design blogs and their Instagram pages. Can you tell me about your home? What style is it?What were some of your design goals? Our home is mostly an eclectic mix of Ikea, hand-me-downs, baby toys and a few special pieces we’ve picked up over the years. But, I guess that’s just our stage in life – newly married with a baby. I’ve definitely made what we have work. My approach was easygoing, kidfriendly, comfortable and playful.
Decorative items are a little higher up on the shelves now and toys and books are lower. You don’t need much to elevate a space; throw down a graphic rug, a couple of fun pillows, a cozy throw and a few curated accessories and voilà, a styled space. Tell me about your love of linen? I’ve always been a lover of natural materials and linen is just so incredible. I love how it looks so relaxed, yet so polished. But, most of all it is comfortable and still looks so stylish (again with the comfort thing). What’s next in terms of design projects? I am working on a bunch of projects within the Lower Mainland. Some full renovations, others smaller styling projects. Stay tuned for photoshoots, more blog posts, and stay up-to-date on my day-to-day Instagram @ erinmichelledesign and website at erinmichelledesign.com.
Along with launching her interior design business, Erin Michelle is mom to a busy one-year-old.

52 Sixth St., new westminster Their open, character-infused storefront harkens back to old New West – really old New West. Back to when the city was a haven for shopping and cool finds – before mall culture came along and killed Columbia Street. The sister-duo of Julia Dewhurst and Emma Nash brings some much-needed energy and style to the city that is itself undergoing something of a rebirth. It’s small businesses like Brick & Mortar, and the energized women running the shop, that are helping to define the “new” New West. Just four years after opening, the gift, décor, jewelry, art and more store has become a favourite stop for locals and other shoppers throughout the region.
