In August 2004 I started on the last leg of my Policy, Communication and
Organisation studies at the Free University of Amsterdam: a traineeship to
help prepare the ground for writing my fi nal thesis. I was very privileged to
be taken on by the Healthcare Practice of Burson-Marsteller in Amsterdam,
Burson-Marsteller being one of the world’s leading public relations fi rms.
My basic premise when embarking on my traineeship was that the
academic discipline of communications and issue management and the
phenomenon of obesity were bound to be closely linked.
