The main shooting season is a fading memory, the shotgun is clean and in the cupboard, the daylight hours are increasing, the snow drops and daffodils are popping out. Everything says Spring has sprung - yet it keeps on raining! The UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wettest winter on record certainly put your outdoor clothing through its paces, with the first weekend of the season seeing a flood of calls on the Monday morning to replace old, tired jackets. Who can say if this is a sign for seasons to come? Global warming theorists certainly contend we are reaping what we sow. Fingers crossed this winter was an anomaly but, if it is indeed a glimpse of the future of the UK climate, draw strength from the old adage: there is no such thing as bad weather; just the wrong clothing. Scientific jargon aside, the DWR coating causes any water that comes into contact with the outer material to bead and roll off. DWR finishes fade over time, resulting in the fabric starting to hold and sponge surface water. The two Nikwax proofing products likely to be most relevant to shooting garments are either Polar Proof or TX-Direct Spray. In order to keep them silent in the field, the majority of hunting garments are finished with a ‘peached’ face which, like the skin of a peach, has a slightly furry finish. Polar Proof is intended for fabrics with this furry finish while TX-Direct is for fabrics with a smooth face. These proofing products are very easy to use. For Polar Proof simply add to either a machine or hand wash while TX-Direct literally just sprays from the provided dispenser onto the fabric. Due to the clever formulation of the NikWax range heat is not required to activate the DWR so tumble drying, which can damage some fabrics, is not required for best results. Until you have given your clothing the NikWax treatment, it is hard for words to do justice to the transformation in performance this little bit of aftercare will give your shooting garments.

ith the season now over, it is important to clean and store your guns properly. If stored unprotected your prized firearm can fall victim to easily avoidable corrosion - the gradual breakdown of metal which affects your firearm’s longevity and safety. It is absolutely vital to clean your gun properly and provide lasting protection when putting it away for any length of time.

Rule of thumb when lubricating a firearm: If you can see the lubricant, you’ve probably used too much. Remember: a little dab here and there is all you need.

fter taking the time to clean your gun, how do you ensure your A firearm won’t pick up rust or pits during long term storage? Napier’s VP90 Corrosion Inhibitor is a fantastic dry, odourless sachet, which you simply pop into your cabinet to ensure any metal surface is protected. A single sachet will protect 1 cubic square metre for a period of 12 months, after which you should replace.

If your gun cabinet is hidden away in a location which is perhaps not as dry and warm as the rest of the house then moisture can be a serious problem. Excessive moisture will cause rapid corrosion and pitting on metal surfaces. LOCKDOWN have a range of products to tackle this problem, starting with their Silica Gel Bag, which will absorb moisture from the air inside the cabinet, causing the crystals to change colour once fully saturated. The silica can then be recharged in the oven for use again and again. The LOCKDOWN Hygrometer provides accurate humidity readings, with a large, easy to read dial. Completing the set is the LOCKDOWN Dehumidifier Rod, which is available in two sizes (12’’ & 18’’) and comes equipped with interior mounting brackets. The Rod works by warming the air in the cabinet, causing convection so the air circulates throughout the safe. The Rods require mains power so you will need to make a hole in your safe to allow the cable to run through. Armed with LOCKDOWN, your treasured, valuable firearms will be protected against humidity, mildew and condensation.

mmortalise the memory of the hunt by preserving and displaying your trophy for all to see. We offer a range of easy to use accessories for preparing the skull for display. Having offered these items for over ten years it is safe to say we have had a question or two from customers - both from new stalkers and seasoned veterans - querying if their methods could be improved. Boiling and bleaching trophies is beyond the scope of this article but if you do have any questions on this topic please don’t hesitate to contact us. When it comes to the actual mounting process, one of the most frequently asked questions has been “How to get the fixings to work?”. The fixings (Fig.1) themselves are Red Skull Fixing £3.99 Code: 351304 very simple and self Roe Skull Fixing £2.50 Code: 351303 explanatory. More often than not the struggle is down to the fact that the skull has been sawn incorrectly. The best way to ensure a consistent cut, repeatable time and time again, is to use a Sawing Off Stand (Fig.2). Our simple jigs ensure the same cut angle is achieved on each and every skull. Fig.1

In order to give the fixing some bone to gain purchase against, it is important to make a long nose cut which includes as much of the nose bone as possible. This method ensures the fixing plate can be popped inside the brain cavity, giving solid bone to grip against when tightened to the shield.

With the skull now cut, finding the appropriate wooden shield is a matter of taste and personal preference. On the opposite page we have a comprehensive selection of oak laminated MDF shields all handmade in Scotland and exceptional quality, with solid oak versions of each style available by special request. The dimensions for our shields are given to assist with the selection and remember to choose a shield which leaves enough space at the bottom for an engraving plaque (see bottom of page 37) or, on certain shields, a CIC medal (Fig.3).

Attaching the skull to the shield is a simple process (Fig.4). With the fixing plate within the brain cavity, hold the skull over the face of the shield. Once happy with the skull positioning, mark the shield where the threaded hole on the fixing plate meets the shield. Using the mark, now drill the shield to allow the bolt to be inserted. Push the bolt in from the back of the shield, guide it onto the fixing plate and tighten carefully until the skull is held firmly to the shield (do not over tighten as bone can be brittle). Should you have a skull that has been given a short nose cut, all is not lost. A trick of the trade is to use epoxy carbide body filler in the skull; it sets hard in minutes and means the skull can literally be screwed to the shield from behind. Essential Gundog Training Equipment Properly trained, a working gun dog is a true pleasure to watch and is an indispensable part of a days shooting. When it comes to training man’s enthusiastic best friend, you don’t need expensive equipment to get them to a good basic standard. What you do need is patience and perseverance. Gundogs must be able to retrieve, walk calmly, be obedient and possess a strong recall habit. Ensuring they are under control is a must. A good whistle, slip lead and a couple of dummies will get you through the first couple of months of training, as you master basic voice commands.

Whistle Whistle control is an essential skill for gundogs working in the field and is especially helpful in trying to control a dog you can’t seem to stop! Dummies The retrieve is one of the most vital skills gundogs need to learn. When training, real birds are not always a viable option, so dummies are a vital substitute. They come in a variety of different shapes, colours, materials and sizes - most are easy to throw and some even float for water training. We recommended using at least a 1lb dummy so your dog gets used to a realistic weight in its mouth. At first you want the dog to be able to find the dummy quickly and with ease and enthusiasm. As you start to build up momentum and confidence with your gundog, you may want to advance to more ‘life-like’ dummies. Once these basics are covered you and your dog are ready to move onto some more realistic training aids to train their senses like sound and smell, and to simulate the shoot day as closely as possible.

Ultimately training will always require patience and persistence. The important thing is making sure your dog works alongside you comfortably, ensuring every dog has its day. 1.

A whistle is a very useful tool and many people feel more comfortable using it outdoors than shouting at the top of their voice for the dog to return. It’s easier to hear than a human voice, even taking weather conditions into account, as it produces a clear, unambiguous sound that will not alter in pitch (unlike your voice). A whistle is also far less disturbing to game and it is important that gundog work is done with minimum disorder. The Acme gundog whistle is very robust and is produced in black or high-vis orange, making it easy to find if dropped. It provides a consistent sound that comes in different pitches to suit the preference of the owner.

Ensure All Food Is Cooked Thoroughly Before Serving

- 4 pheasant breasts - 6 tbsp Sundried Tomato & Basil Sausage mix - 2 tbsp finely grated parmesan cheese - 2 eggs - 1 cup of flour - 4 Garlic cloves (finely chopped) - 4 tbsp butter Warm the butter so it is soft but not melted, add in the finely chopped garlic and mix together well. Add the parmesan and sausage mix into a small bowl and stir together. Beat the eggs into a second bowl and lastly put the flour into a third bowl. Take the breasts and, with a sharp knife, slice them horizontally but do not cut all the way through - you are making a pocket or flap. Spread the garlic butter over the inside of the breast and close the flap back over. Take the breast and carefully roll in the flour, once flour coated then dip in the egg, and lastly roll in the seasoning mix and ensure it is completely coated. Place the breasts on an oven tray, drizzle some oil on them to crisp up the coating and place in an oven at 200° for approx 20-25mins.

Cook until the coating is golden brown all over and the meat is cooked all the way through, approximately 10mins. (If you prefer a healthier option the cubes can be popped in the oven at 180º for about 20mins, a light coating of oil will help crisp up the coating.)
