The Great Big Donco! 2

This year we’re delighted to work with new partners as part of the St. Leger Festival week and as part of the Without Walls Associate Touring Network – which means we can bring high quality touring outdoor performances to Doncaster town centre.

The DNweekeND this year kicks off with our locallymade Yorkshire Festival commission The Great Big Donco – hear stories told through spoken word and song about the myth behind this fabulous giant local creature and see it come to life before your eyes. The DNweekeND offers a wide range of performances throughout the weekend across our three venues. Be entertained by street theatre, dance, circus and local music in the Market of Marvels. Enter fun and intriguing worlds in the Village of Dreams, be taken on spoken word tours and hear choir performances in the House of Sound. The DNweekeND seeks to create a fun and entertaining environment where we celebrate local, international and culturally diverse voices. We also want to show off Doncaster town centre, its historic (and not so historic) architecture, its new developments and local businesses. DNweekeND has been programmed by a range of local people as part of Right Up Our Street – creating public events and activities across the borough throughout the year. We hope you enjoy the weekend. C-12 Dance // Trolleys Market of Marvels // Sat 1pm and 3pm Dance Part dance. Part ballet. Part outdoor spectacle. TROLLEYS is a new ballet for five supermarket trolleys. Two meet and fall in love. One grapples to find a friend. Three others revolt and ignite a dance of anarchy. Trolleys spin, glide and slide in this highly physical, humorous outdoor performance where high-octane contemporary dance, acrobatics and street dance merge with the extraordinary world of trolleys. Set to a pounding electro-acoustic score, TROLLEYS will tease, thrill and move its audience. You’ll never go shopping in the same way again.

Rossington Right Up Our Street // Rossington Kwik Kazoo Market of Marvels // Sat 1.30pm Music You’ve heard of flashmobs, how about a flash-kazoo? Vamos Theatre // The Crimplene Crusaders Market of Marvels/Village of Dreams // Sat 11am/2.30pm – Marketplace and 1pm Village of Dreams Walkabout These octogenarian upholders of moral values are out and about with one thing on their minds: to keep standards high. Our twin-set clad campaigners will keep a firm eye out for any slouching, flirting, or hand-holding, making sure that good old fashioned values are championed. And on very special occasions, they may be persuaded to let their hair down and demonstrate some unrivalled disco moves to their favourite modern music. With The Crimplene Crusaders around, who needs superheroes?

Rosana Cade // Walking:Holding Tour begins at the Market of Marvels // Sat and Sun 11am-1.30pm and 2pm-5pm Performance What does your town look like from someone else’s perspective? How intimate can you be with someone you’ve just met? Walking:Holding invites you to walk hand in hand with a series of very different local strangers around nearby streets, parks and alleyways. It is a participatory performance for one audience member at a time, offering a gentle meditation on identity, touch and intimacy in urban public space. Places are limited – sign up at the Shed in Marketplace.

Urban Angels Circus // The Gals Market of Marvels/Baxtergate // Sat 11.30am Marketplace and 1.30pm and 3.30pm Baxtergate Walkabout Pretty in pink these domestic goddesses are on a mission to clean and pose! Their exuberant antics frequently involve members of the audience!

Plunge Boom // Smoke Market of Marvels/Baxtergate // Sun 12pm and 3pm Walkabout A man sits still amidst members of the public. Gradually, smoke begins to creep from out of his trouser leg. He crosses his legs and the smoke stops. Next it arises from his collar, then his sleeves. All the while he acknowledges this with a weary resignation, but what starts as a wisp ends up as an inevitable billow. Smoke is a visual, non-verbal show that offers an abstract, gently comic & understated physical performance. It begins as a meandering walkabout of public interactions before becoming an unstoppable plumage.

Gandini Juggling // 8 Songs Market of Marvels // Sun 11am and 2pm Juggling A series of choreographed juggling vignettes set to 8 classic rock and roll songs. A tribute to the mythical landscape of popular music. From Dylan’s stream of consciousness realms to the Velvet Underground’s troubling landscapes, from David Bowie’s soulful escapades to the rocking Rolling Stone’s anthemic joy de vivre.

See timeline on pages 18-19 and map on the foldout back cover. 9

Company Chameleon // Of Man and Beast Market of Marvels // Sun 12pm and 3.30pm Dance Of Man and Beast is a dynamic new outdoor work from Company Chameleon. A powerful, sensitive and revealing look at male group dynamics, Of Man and Beast uncovers the many faces of man – strength, camaraderie, vulnerability and hostility. Five exceptional male performers showcase the company’s inventive and unique physical style. 10

Parade To close the festival in style and inspired by The Clash of Drums (an internationally renowned piece of street theatre coming to Doncaster later in September), Cast have worked with Doncaster residents to create a high impact and enjoyable Masquerade Parade through Doncaster Town Centre.
