South East Queensland is Australia’s fastest growing region with the population expected to double in the next twenty years. Estimates from the South East Queensland Regional Plan point to an expected increase from the current level of 2.8 million people to more than 4.4 million by 2031. South East Queensland covers 22,890 square kilometres, from Noosa in the north to Coolangatta in the south and from Toowoomba in the west to the Pacific coastline in the east. A range of factors have underpinned this growth, including its natural environment, lifestyle opportunities and a welcoming business community. At the heart of this flourishing South East Queensland region, is Australia’s largest regional city, the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast is currently Australia’s sixth largest city with a population of 500,000. This is further expected to grow to nearly 800,000 by 2031. To accommodate the Gold Coast’s considerable growth, an additional 7,733 jobs will need to be created every year for the next 30 years. Or more than 232,000 jobs in total. Whilst population-based industries including construction, retail and professional services continue to drive regional economic prosperity, thirty percent of new jobs will need to come from knowledge or export focused sectors. That is why the Yatala Enterprise Area (YEA) on the Gold Coast, is such an important industrial land resource for South East Queensland. As South East Queensland grows the YEA will continue to grow and its central location and the opportunities it provides will ensure that the businesses located there will grow too. These businesses are going to play a vital role in creating jobs across the whole South East Queensland region.
