Plain sailing for the central banks in 2020? Dream on — uncertainties are multiplying The US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank spent the past year reversing course with interest-rate cuts and liquidity injections. But central bankers cannot assume calm conditions in 2020. MOHAMED A EL-ERIAN reports. AFTER a year that involved one of the biggest U-turns in recent monetary-policy history, central banks are now hoping for peace and quiet in 2020. This is particularly true for the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve, the world’s two most powerful monetary institutions.
