ne hundred percent electrification of its bus fleet and having the infrastructure in place to support that electrification — by the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles — is the plan at the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT). “LADOT started purchasing alternative-fuel vehicles in 1998, first powered by propane and then CNG. We are now focused on being 100 percent electric, with a fleet of 500-plus buses, by 2028 — and doing our best to make sure that happens,” LADOT Acting Chief Of Transit Programs Kari Derderian said. It was announced in 2020 that LADOT placed an order with BYD for 130 electric buses, continuing an already established relationship between the two entities.
“We currently have four BYD electric buses in our fleet, and they have performed very well over the past three years. We received those vehicles through a grant program, helping us gain valuable experience with electric buses at LADOT,” Derderian said. Additional procurement work paved the way for the 130-bus order, which is part of an expected overall increase of 155 electric buses at LADOT in the near future. “Our relationship with BYD has been great,” Derderian

said. “It helps that they have a facility close by, in Lancaster, CA, which our maintenance support staff can easily visit. That provides us with a hands-on approach, as it relates to maintaining our electric buses.” Of course, in order to run a large fleet of electric buses, a transit provider must also have the infrastructure in place to support such a move. That focus has been ongoing at LADOT, and involves four existing locations within the city limits of Los Angeles, with plans for a fifth.

Also provided by LADOT is its Cityride transportation assistance program, for qualified individuals age 65 or older and those people with disabilities. Participants must also reside in Los Angeles or select areas of Los Angeles County. The program includes Cityride’s Dial-A-Ride (DAR) services, permitted taxicab rides and free DASH bus rides. There are currently 44 LADOT cutaway buses used for Cityride. “When Dial-A-Ride demand exceeds the availability of our vehicles, LADOT assigns specific trip requests to participating taxi companies, at a lower subsidy, for passengers,” Derderian said. The LADOT Charter Bus Program, meanwhile, is de-
signed to assist senior, youth and disabled groups in Los Angeles with free or subsidized charter bus services, helping them attend various educational, recreational and cultural events in the region. Events/destinations often include trips to the beach, amusement parks, museums, theaters and sporting events. Service is provided on motorcoach, school and wheelchair-accessible vehicles, and is available throughout the year on a first-come, first-serve basis. The newest transportation service by LADOT, which has been temporarily suspended due to the pandemic, is LAnow. It’s an on-demand, shared-ride service designed by its users. A person can schedule a ride either through the LAnow smartphone app, online or by phone. Once reserved, the user meets a participating vehicle at a scheduled LAnow pick-up/drop-off point. Within the service area, pick-up/drop-off points are never more than one-quarter of a mile away from the user. “LAnow is in its infancy and remains a pilot program,” Derderian said. “There are six peak buses scheduled for that service.” He added that throughout the history of LADOT, adjustments have been made as the definition of “transit” constantly changes. “The dynamics of how people want to get around continues to shift. vehicles,” Derderian explained. “That includes our automated passenger counters, which were recently certified, helping to improve our reporting efforts to the (Federal Transit Administration’s) National Transit Database.”
P
MOVING PEOPLE DURING A PANDEMIC
rior to COVID-19, LADOT vehicles totaled 9.5 million vehicle miles during FY 2019, which included 6.9 million revenue miles. Although overall passenger counts since the start of the pandemic have decreased, current ridership numbers indicate approximately 19 million rides have taken place within the past year for LADOT’s DASH program, 2 million rides for Commuter Express and 200,000 rides for Cityride. “There was less COVID-19 impact on our DASH services than our Commuter Express,” Derderian said. “We did reduce some DASH services in our communities, by about an hour a day. It was very minimal, as DASH remains essential transportation for various communities. Even during stayat-home orders, people still needed groceries and to make necessary medical appointments. It’s also important that essential workers have transportation options.” It was learned that a high percentage of riders for one particular DASH line (during the height of the pandemic) consisted of custodial staff members, health care workers, home
care providers and other essential employees — all trying their best to keep Los Angeles on its feet. “It showed us that, even in the car capital of the world, bus travel remains an essential building block that keeps things going,” LADOT Director of Public Information Colin Sweeney added. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a greater impact on LADOT’s Commuter Express, where services had been reduced by 50 percent. “The reduction was due to lower demand, as more people were staying home,” Derderian said. “We were able to meet the needs of those riders who still needed to get to certain places, such as their offices. “Adjustments were also made to our Cityride service, which involves the senior community and people with disabilities. Of course, many of those riders were reducing their travel time anyway, trying to avoid exposure to COVID.” The pandemic did require certain LADOT vehicles to be used in other ways. Buses were needed as shuttles for the homeless population, and for transporting food to various communities. “The city council placed several of our Cityride vehicles on standby, to be used as needed. We are always willing to provide transportation to those communities within the city that are in need,” Derderian said. With new COVID-19 cases increasing in July and August

across many parts of the United States, including California, LADOT officials continue to monitor the situation as it relates to transportation. “We have worked to return all of our services back to normal, but continue to make adjustments due to the continuing pandemic. It’s important that LADOT, and all city officials, monitor changing dynamics, including future transportation needs,” Derderian said. “There are also new forces at play within transit, as the pandemic changed some people’s commute patterns. In response, adjustments are constantly being reviewed. “As of now (early August), we are scheduled to bring back our on-demand LAnow pilot program after the Labor Day weekend, and are excited to see how that service takes off.” Due to COVID-19, LADOT continues to implement specific guidelines for passengers and drivers involving all of its vehicles and transportation services. That includes: n All drivers have been issued and are required to wear masks; n All passengers are required to wear masks covering their nose and mouth while riding LADOT vehicles; n No seating is allowed immediately behind the driver; and, n Buses are to be deep cleaned each night. LADOT representatives continue to monitor guidance is-

sued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, State of California, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Among the first steps taken by LADOT, as COVID-19 cases began to appear in the Los Angeles area, was to stop front-door bus boarding. The ban continued until shields could be installed to better protect drivers from the spread of the virus. “At the same time, we started providing face masks and hand sanitizer on our buses, which we continue to do. We also limited our bus occupancy to approximately 50 percent,” Derderian said. “It helped that our real-time bus arrival system can inform people of the current capacity regarding an approaching bus. We continue to use technology to help our passengers better choose the right vehicles for their needs, and to properly navigate the entire transportation system at LADOT. “We also provide public announcements to encourage passengers to keep their distance while on a bus, and to continue wearing face masks.” Derderian expects the pandemic will leave its mark on future bus travel, once COVID-19 cases cease for good. However, it’s hard to predict what those changes will be related to travel. “At LADOT, we have our ‘radar’ up, trying to see if any new transportation patterns are developing, and if new dynamics

certain standards, such as those involving safety and customer service.” Although all employees are important, when it comes to transporting a person from one place to another in a large vehicle, it’s hard to imagine a position that comes with more responsibility than that of a driver. “We are fortunate that many of our drivers make a career at LADOT. Even if a contract changes, due to the policies we have in place through a workers retention ordinance, our drivers will remain at LADOT. The contractor may change, but the drivers do not,” Derderian said. “It’s important to remember that many of our drivers operate on the same bus routes every day. They become very familiar with our passengers and become a part of the community. “We want all LADOT drivers to be professional, courteous, responsive to the clientele and capable of safely operating their vehicles — that is what makes a good bus driver.” Like many transportation providers, LADOT officials have faced recent challenges in finding new drivers. It’s a process that continues to be monitored. “We are currently looking at new approaches to driver recruitment. The good new is, once we find a good driver, that person usually stays with LADOT for a long time. It’s not uncommon to have drivers stay for 20-plus years,” Derderian said. Customer service is another area that drivers, and all

According to Derderian, customer service comes in different forms. “I don’t want to sound too simplistic, but what is truly important to most of our riders is pretty basic. security, while real-time arrival systems allow passengers to better calculate when a bus is due to arrive, instead of having to wait at a bus stop for 20 minutes.” In order to get the word out, pertaining to the many transportation services it provides, various LADOT representatives are proficient in different marketing programs. That often involves social media promotions and community-focused outreach. “There are all types of ways we reach more riders. It includes brochures in 11 languages, and working with various business leaders, letting them know how their employees can benefit by using our Commuter Express program,” Derderian said. “Overall, I feel we have developed a loyal ridership, based on the various services that we provide. LADOT has very strong brand
equity, and we work extremely hard to protect that brand. It’s important that our services, such as DASH and Commuter Express, continue to receive strong and positive recognition within the various areas of Los Angeles that we operate.” While located in a part of the country famous for its freeways and personal vehicles, Derderian feels public transportation has received favorable response, over the years, from many residents of Los Angeles. “I think our services mean different things to different people, but we are in a region that has shown consistent commitment by approving various propositions and sales tax increases over the years. That has allowed LADOT to maintain, and improve, its transportation offerings,” he said. “It goes without saying there is a certain group of people that use our services because they have to, in order to get to work, etc. As we move forward, attitudes of discretionary riders are slowly changing, helping to increase ridership in that group.”

Some can be controlled better than others. From a funding perspective, LADOT’s future is tied to our city’s financial health, and what our policy makers want to do,” Derderian said. “Fortunately, LADOT has been very competitive when it comes to receiving grants. It has a proven track record of not only receiving grants, but delivering on what those grants are intended to achieve.”

n 1992, Timi Kaufman, who was working for Basket and Home Goods Manufacturing Company, began hosting tours to her employer’s facilities. That initial exposure to the touring industry led her to eventually open Timi’s Tours Transportation, in Moweaqua, IL.
“Timi’s Tours started in 2006 as a retail tour operator that did not own any buses,” said Vice President Jack Kaufman, Timi Kaufman’s son, during a recent interview with Busline Magazine. “At that time, we just booked tours using chartered vehicles.” In 2008, Timi’s Tours purchased a motorcoach. Then, the Great Recession hit and diesel went to $5 a gallon, causing the company to opt out of the coach side of the business, Kaufman said. For a long time, Timi’s Tours booked trips from coast-to-coast through a Midwest provider. Then, in 2018, that company went out of business. “We were looking for another motorcoach company provider that met our standards,” Kaufman said. “When we couldn’t find one locally, or at a price we could pay, we decided to purchase a brand new, full-sized 45-foot motorcoach. “We now have eight full-sized motorcoaches in our fleet. In addition, we operate a 35-foot midsized limo coach, and we recently took delivery of two 27-passenger minibuses. We also have three executive vans and an SUV.” Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Timi’s Tours operated only full-sized motorcoaches. “Pre-COVID, we had nothing but full-sized motorcoaches,” Kaufman said. “We owned nothing small, and I would have told you then I would never run anything smaller than a full-sized coach.” Seeing opportunities during COVID, as people became more concerned about being in larger crowds, Timi’s Tours purchased several smaller passenger vehicles. Of the many amenities on Timi’s Tours’ vehicles that passengers especially appreciate is more leg room, which the company provides. Indeed, its 60-seat passenger
coaches are outfitted with 52 seats, which provides for more room and comfort. “Leg room is a big thing. We have a lot of clients who really like the additional room,” Kaufman said. “We only order coaches with high-spec options. We don’t order anything basic. Amenities on our coaches include color changing lights, wood floors and woodgrain console racks. They all have Wi-Fi, 110-volt outlets at every seat and tray tables — all options that people are demanding. We really want our coaches to be a luxury product.” Kaufman is excited about the technological advancements on today’s modern motorcoaches, including adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking systems. “We have had incidents where accidents have been prevented when drivers did not have time to react, but the coaches did. So, emergency braking systems are definitely among the technological

advancements we really like,” Kaufman said. “In addition, we have fleet metrics and cameras, to ensure our drivers are being held to our high standard. The cameras also offer protection for operators if somebody calls and says this happened or that happened. Working diligently to make sure customers are happy with the service are Timi’s Tours’ 37 employees, 20 of whom are drivers. “We operate a full-service maintenance shop, which includes technicians and a cleaning staff,” Kaufman said. “We also employ office staff, dispatchers, people who book tours and tour guides who go on trips. In addition, we have an office manager and an operations manager for the charter side of the business. A lot of people wear more than one hat.” The maintenance shop is open to people needing maintenance on vehicles not part of the Timi’s Tours’ fleet, including buses, RVs, semi trucks, etc. “We do whatever we can to help people,” Kaufman said. Timi’s Tours has a full-time crew that performs the important task of keeping coaches sparkling clean. “The cleaning crew members only maintain our motorcoaches. They wash and detail them, clean the interior and disinfect the buses,” Kaufman said. “During slower times, the crew will pull a bus off-line for a ‘deep’ cleaning, spending up to 12 hours on the interior of one bus. We ensure that every time a coach arrives at a customer’s location, it looks ‘showroom’ new.” While the coaches look like they came off the showroom floor at the beginning of a trip, drivers, while on the road, are given what they need to “touch up” the buses. “All the buses are outfitted with disinfecting lights, spray, mops and brooms for drivers to use to keep them clean during over-theroad trips,” Kaufman said. “In addition, drivers are allowed, at their discretion, to take their coaches to another bus company or a commercial facility to have them washed.” Furthermore, Timi’s Tours is AssurCLEAN certified.
AssurCLEAN is a program of the United Motorcoach Association, which certifies that companies have complied with stringent safety standards in regards to cleaning procedures. Timi’s Tours’ staff has been extensively trained in the use of disinfection machines, techniques and cleaning agents. All vehicles in its fleet are coated with a product, providing a durable long-term disinfection coating that kills and inhibits the growth of problematic bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoans, viruses, and other microorganisms that can inhabit surfaces, according to the company. “We really pride ourselves in having a nice, modern, clean fleet. We want passengers to step on a bus and say, ‘wow,’” Kaufman said.

TIMI’S TOURS’ LOCATION IS BENEFICIAL
oweaqua is located in central Illinois. The current population of the village is 1,856 people, based on projections of the latest U.S. Census estimates, according to worldpopulationreview.com. The town is located about 16 miles south of Decatur, IL, with a population of 103,019 residents. “We are in a nice central location with easy access to several mid-sized and larger cities. We have customers who like to travel to those cities,” Kaufman said. “We are also close enough to bid work in the larger cities.” Close by are the cities of Springfield, the state capital, the twin cities of Bloomington/Normal and Champaign/Urbana, as well as Peoria. Outside of the Chicago metro area, also known as Chicagoland, Springfield, with a population of 113,010 residents, is the second largest city in the state, behind Rockford.

In addition to traveling in the state of Illinois, Timi’s Tours’ coaches can be found transporting passengers throughout the lower 48 states and Alaska. The company specializes in tours, charter bus service and airport shuttles. “A lot of our work involves over-the-road trips,” Kaufman said. “For example, we just had a tour return from the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota. We are currently conducting a trip in Michigan, and we have a trip scheduled to Idaho and Montana. So, we have buses traveling many miles on the nation’s highways, going to a lot of exciting destinations.” Timi’s Tours operates from two facilities in Moweaqua, one of which is brand new, having been constructed during the past year. “Our first location is our main office, where day-to-day business, dispatching, etc., is conducted,” Kaufman said. The second floor of the main office is an apartment that drivers can use. “A number of our drivers live one to two hours away, including one who lives in South Dakota,” Kaufman said. “He commutes to work and stays in the apartment the entire time he is here.” About two blocks from the main office is Timi’s Tours’ new facility, which contains a full office for dispatching, etc. That space is not currently being used. “The new building is very modern. At this point, we haven’t quite grown into the office space, yet,” Kaufman said. “Otherwise, the facility has two maintenance bays, one of which has an underground pit so we can service the underside of buses, make oil changes, etc. Upstairs is another two-bed apartment for drivers.”

LOOKING FOR DRIVERS WHO HAVE PASSION AND COMPASSION
ne definition of “passion” is “an intense desire or enthusiasm for something.” The dictionary defines “compassion” as “sympathy and concern for others.” Timi’s Tours seeks drivers who possess both traits. “I understand sometimes negative things happen on a trip. Drivers are human, and it is all in how they react to less than desirable situations,” Kaufman said. “The biggest factor is having passion and compassion, along with a ‘roll with the punches’ attitude. This industry is so fluid and changes can happen at the last minute, such as having to reroute a trip. Therefore, we want drivers who are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. “We definitely want drivers who have great personalities and put smiles on customers’ faces when they board a bus.” Finding good drivers is a challenge for many transportation providers, and Timi’s Tours is no exception. “We struggle, like everybody else at times, to find drivers. In a lot of ways, our drivers are our best source to recruit new operators,” Kaufman said. “We have a lot of drivers who are very active in interacting with other drivers, telling them what it is like to work at Timi’s Tours. They tend to bring people in the door who want to work here.” Indeed, Timi’s Tours awards a bonus to current employees for each candidate they bring to the company who gets hired. “We have flyers employees can hand out with information about

Timi’s Tours and what we are looking for in a driver,” Kaufman said. “Our employees have brought us many good, qualified drivers.” Beyond just the flyers, a Timi’s Tours employee might bring to the company someone he/she had previously worked with at another agency, or knew personally who would be a nice addition to the company’s culture. Also attractive to potential new hires is the fact that Timi’s Tours pays well and has good benefits. “Pay is one of the driving factors for people who are seeking a new job. Therefore, the more you pay, the better applicants you are going to get, and the happier your current employees are going to be,” Kaufman said. “While we were already offering pretty high pay for the industry, we just raised it 25 percent for all drivers across the board, and we raised our per diem 20 percent.” There are, however, a couple of potential road blocks to finding drivers that Timi’s Tours must navigate. “We do not have a minimum requirement when it comes to experience. We would be happy to train new hires how to operate a motorcoach,” Kaufman said. “The problem is, our insurance company requires a candidate to have a commercial drivers license (CDL) at least two years before we can hire him/her. That is something that is difficult and restrictive in the industry. It is hard to find drivers who are qualified and who have had a CDL that long. “One exciting project we are currently undertaking is working with a local community college that is offering a motorcoach driver training institute to develop a training program.
People completing the training will receive an accredited certificate, which will wave the two-year CDL requirement. Timi’s Tours is going to donate a bus to be used in the program.” Another potential roadblock to hiring qualified drivers, has to do with drug screening, which Timi’s Tours requires. On January 1, 2020, Illinois legalized the use of recreational marijuana for adults. The good news is drivers who have their CDL’s tend to not use the drug, as they realize possession of marijuana remains illegal at the federal level. Therefore, drug testing is not an issue with them, Kaufman said. On the other hand, for people looking for a job in public transportation that does not require a CDL, the possibility of undergoing drug testing can be a deal breaker. “I have had drivers applying for non-CDL positions who, when I mentioned drug testing, got up and left the interview, saying, ‘OK. Thank you. Have a nice day,’” Kaufman said. All Timi’s Tours employees are well-versed in the company’s customer service philosophy. “Again, I like to say we never tell a customer ‘no,’” Kaufman said. “We bend over backwards and go that extra mile to make the customer happy, even if that is an extra expense for us. We are very much oriented around finding what our customers like. “For example, if there is a customer who has a favorite candy, maybe when he/she gets on a bus that candy will be there. Also, we will send a birthday card to a customer, or a bereavement July/August 2021

“I was involved with a company where a fire had taken place. Our crisis management included getting contractors to the site to evaluate the building, as well as working with our insurance carrier,” Rutledge said. “Crisis management is based on getting resources directed to specific areas. It also involves setting up a work and communications structure. It’s important to have a plan in place before a crisis strikes, one that spells out who is responsible for what. “Crisis management must include communications, public relations and internal messaging. It’s important to work on controlling and mitigating the emergency, as well as labor planning. Start looking beyond the emergency, to the impact that crisis has on your business. At this point, it’s not too early to start a Business Continuity plan.” The latter involves planning how customers will soon be supplied with product again, allowing the revenue stream to continue. Another important step in planning for a crisis involves Disaster Recovery, which includes knowing who to call for each area of support needed. Examples that Rutledge provided include: • Clean Up & Debris Removal — If a company’s building burns down or is destroyed in a storm, who is going to clean the mess? • Post-traumatic Stress Counseling — For employees who see a crisis unfold, especially if there is an injury, post-traumatic stress is a real possibility. There is also the stress that comes if a business shuts down for a period of time. Employees may start to worry about future paychecks. Such issues should be part of a Disaster Recovery plan. • Insurance and Insurance Support — Rutledge expressed the importance of making sure insurance brokers will be ready if an event, such as a fire or storm, occurs. He added that insurance carriers are very good at helping their customers try to prevent disasters, through their various resources involving loss prevention. He added that when it comes to Disaster Recovery, it’s all about, “Who are you going to call?” It’s also vital that those companies that are “coming to the rescue,” are contacted beforehand, so that they will be ready when there is a need. “It’s important to determine who are the best sources to contact. Make sure all companies your business is relying on will be available 24/7. If they are not, look for somebody else,” Rutledge said. “I don’t know why, but a lot of emergencies occur on a Friday afternoon (when people have left for the weekend), rather than 9 a.m. on a Monday.” He noted that planning for a crisis takes leadership, commitment and drive. The work, however, can have an enormous and long-lasting impact on a business, brand, customers and employees.

EVALUATE YOUR BUSINESS TODAY efore a disaster strikes is the perfect time for officials to evaluate their company’s preparedness. Crossing all “Ts” and doting all “Is” is much easier before a major event occurs. Rutledge recommended the following when discussing proper evaluation: • Rely on past experiences of company leaders— “There are many businesses that have members in upper management who have dealt with crises before, whether it’s with their current company or elsewhere,” Rutledge said. “It’s important to ask and learn from them. They can identify current risk levels within a company.” • Look at circumstances from the worst possible point of view — “We all like to focus on the good stuff, but it’s also important to identify bad things that can happen,” he said. • Embrace a plan of action — It’s nice to know that if something does goes wrong, there is a plan in place and people know how to implement that plan. • Actually teach the plan to those who will be involved — “Don’t draft a beautiful document and just set it on a shelf or place
it inside a folder in a computer. Instead, employees need to be constantly educated and updated on crisis plans,” Rutledge said. “Plans should be taught at a frequency that provides good retention. They should also be specific to what needs to be done. Don’t make them too complicated.” • Drill the plans — “Pick a crisis that could happen at your business and conduct a drill exercise,” he said. “Drilling is an important component, as it keeps things alive, people thinking, and most importantly, it teaches your people what to do if an emergency occurs.” • Modify accordingly — Things change. Although Rutledge said checklists are fine to use when preparing for disasters, no two disasters are the same. “You don’t want to get into the mindset that everything about an emergency or disaster can be covered in a single document. Plans will always need to be modified. That is where drilling and teaching come into play,” Rutledge said. “When new information presents itself, or your company experiences something it hasn’t experienced before, it’s important to revisit your plans and modify them accordingly. For example, people were not talking about ransomware 10 to 20 years ago. Today, it’s a real threat. Pull out your plans, and modify where necessary, to cover something new.” He added it’s important to conduct a postmortem for every crisis that takes place. Ask such questions as: What went well? What did we learn? What things did we not see coming? How can we respond differently in the future?

CONTROLLING THE SITUATION crisis can test business culture like nothing else, according to Rutledge. And although the timing of a crisis is not controllable, its impact can often be controlled. That can be achieved through proper planning and mitigation. For example, fire suppression equipment can help a facility avoid a serious fire. It’s also possible to lessen, or avoid, negative public relations that can result from a crisis. “I remember one circumstance where there was a serious injury at a company. After the 911 call was placed, a newspaper reporter came to the scene before the ambulance. That is an example of how things can quickly get out of control,” Rutledge said. “Today, there is Facebook, Snapchat and other social media that people use to rapidly share information. For those businesses that can afford one, a good public relations company can help. “Many of the crisis management programs I have created focus on public relations. That includes prepared statements, such as those sent to customers. It allows employees and customers to know what has happened, and if the supply of product will be delayed.” He added that mass communication technology now available is another good way to notify employees and other people regarding a recent event. “Crisis management is all about how fast your business can properly recover. The order in which a company works on recovery is equally as important. People, such as employees, have to be the top priority. Otherwise, it appears a company is putting profit in front of people, which nobody likes,” Rutledge said. “The next thing that comes into play is the planet. People want to know if an emergency is hurting the environment. After that, it’s about property. “If you can take care of those three ‘Ps’ — people, planet and property — the fourth ‘P,’ which stands for ‘profit,’ will take care of itself. When working through a crisis, emergency or disaster, start with heart and make sure you are doing things for the right reasons. card when we know the customer has lost someone he/she cares about. We want our customers and employees to feel like family.” As a testimony to the care operators give to customers, many times groups will request a particular driver. “We try to accommodate those requests as best we can,” Kaufman said. “It is not always possible, but it is certainly something we try to do.” For those who might want to pursue a career as a driver in the motorcoach transportation world, Kaufman has some words of advice. First of all, he said, a person should get his/her CDL license as soon as possible and maintain a clean driving record. “Keep your record clean — no accidents, no tickets, etc. — because insurance companies are watching,” Kaufman said. “Furthermore, get some experience driving commercial vehicles any way you can. The reward will be gaining employment in an industry that is a lot of fun. Drivers get to go to some of the coolest places in the country, while meeting a lot of fun people along the way. It is kind of like a vacation.”

COVID PANDEMIC TAKES AN OMINOUS TURN
t has been well documented that motorcoach touring, charter and shuttle companies took a severe hit when the COVID19 pandemic shut down the country in the spring of 2020. Many transportation agencies were not able to recover from the loss of business and were forced to close. Those who have survived, including Timi’s Tours, faced major hurdles to stay afloat. For Timi’s Tours, the grim reality of what was ahead began to come into focus in mid-March 2020. “At the beginning of the pandemic, on March 21, 2020, we had a group in Alaska that we had to bring home a couple of days early because we learned we were not going to be able to get them across the Canadian border,” Kaufman said. “That same day, we had to lay off our entire staff because our calendar for charter and tour work for the next three months was canceled. We were worried that was going to be the end of Timi’s Tours. Nonetheless, we held out hope that in three months, things would start to look up as far as bookings were concerned.” Much to the company’s dismay, three months turned into six months without any uptick in business, then, it caught lightening in a bottle. “We were very fortunate in July 2020 to win a contract transporting employees for a company. That contract has continued to this day, involving up to seven vehicles for that service at any given time,” Kaufman said. “That windfall allowed us to bring back a lot of our office staff and drivers. We were very fortunate and thankful.” In March of this year, Timi’s Tours’ business began to slowly rebound. “Now, we are running wide open. All of our charters and tours are back, as well as our contract work,” Kaufman said. “We are now busier than we have ever been. We are very fortunate to have a great group of customers who are ready to travel and support us, and who were understanding during the pandemic of decisions we had to make. “We are asking customers who haven’t been fully vaccinated
to wear masks while on our buses. Up until the beginning of July, we had capacity restrictions on buses in place, but, as governmental bodies loosened those restrictions, so did we. “In addition, all of our coaches have a proactive air and surface disinfectant system. So, anytime the HVAC system is going, it is disinfecting the coach. That provides more protection along with our regular cleaning efforts.” Unfortunately, since Busline’s initial interview on July 16 with Kaufman for this feature story, the pandemic has taken an ominous turn for the worse, as the Delta Variant is infecting people at an alarming rate, primarily among unvaccinated individuals. Some areas are reinstating previously relaxed restrictions, especially since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued new guidelines. They call for people who have been fully vaccinated, and those who have not who live in areas where there are high incidents of the Delta Variant, to begin wearing masks again, especially indoors. Busline reached out to Kaufman to get his thoughts on how might the Delta Variant impact Timi’s Tours. “We remain diligent in our monitoring of COVID and its variants for how they affect our business operations, and will resume restrictions as we see fit,” Kaufman said. “We will continue to advocate for the vaccination of our clients and staff, and continue the cleaning procedures that have remained in place throughout the pandemic. “We consider the new variant to be a threat to shutting businesses down again, and are doing our part to prevent that. Our entire staff is committed to following government mandates and common sense precautions.” Meanwhile, another developing crisis, that has the potential to disrupt the touring and charter business, is the wildfires burning out of control in some western states. Fortunately, Timi’s Tours has not had to cancel any tours because of the fires, Kaufman said. Before the Delta Variant’s astonishing rise, Kaufman was optimistic about the future as tours were being sold a year in advance. Now, it is a wait-and-see game as to where the Delta Variant situation is going. Commenting on the industry as a whole, Delta Variant not-withstanding, Kaufman said, “There is much uncertainty right now. I think we are going to see a lot fewer coach companies. I know there is a significant number that are gone because of COVID.” As there are fewer companies in existence because of the pandemic, Kaufman hopes companies that remain will stay busy as supply and demand is on their side. “I also hope we can get the rates we need to help pay for the expensive equipment we run,” he said.

ARBOC To Supply Toronto Transit Commission 110 ARBOC Low-Floor Transit Buses
ARBOC Specialty Vehicles, LLC , a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc., has announced that the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has awarded the company a firm order for 110 seven-meter Independence low-floor transit buses. The award was placed through ARBOC’s Canadian distributor, Creative Carriage Ltd., utilizing the government of Ontario’s Metrolinx Transit Procurement Initiative (TPI). ARBOC plans to deliver the initial group of up to 30 buses in 2021, with the remaining 80 vehicles to be delivered in 2022. “TTC, North America’s third largest transit system after New York City Transit Authority and Mexico City Metro, is the public transport agency responsible for the transportation network of the greater Toronto area, serving nearly 1.7 million passengers on an average weekday. TTC offers multiple transportation services, including subway lines, streetcar routes, and more than 140 bus routes made up of approximately 2,400 buses. The new ARBOC Independence low-floor buses will support rejuvenation of TTC's Wheel-Trans fleet that provides transit options for seniors and persons with disabilities,” said ARBOC. “We responded to TTC’s specific design requirements by designing a customized bus for TTC’s unique fleet and operational
