Neville Brody Neville Brody is a well know English Graphic Designer. Since young age Neville Brody always knew he was going to become an designer or an artist. He has started become globally known for his typography and style he uses for his designs. It started with designing for The Face magazine and Arena magazine. Brody always strived to create outstanding visuals and interesting theme, to allow the audience to put meanings to the pieces of work that was produced. He has done a lot experimenting in order to combine magazines and visual language together with an architectural twists. This way the work he produced became very unique and modernised. My attention was taken by the typography and the colours used throughout the designs. On the other hand, I LOVE the simplicity because it shows how a simple design can be something very attracting to its audience. Neville Brody manages to manipulate images and vartieies of typeface into new shapes and proportions. Brody is a big success in designing industry and hits the world with his designs.

Javier Mariscal Javier Mariscal is a Spanish artist and designer who is really well known across different ranges of mediums. Mariscal has developed his career in Barcelona, which is the city of art as we can imagine. He has mainly focused on Mediterranean culture; having vibrant and poetic approach to his designs. Mariscal has opened up a studio in Spain as he works with special chosen designers that are cable of producing designs that will attract its audience. Mariscal’s work is such an inspiration because not only thinking about design his also thinking about culture. To me culture is really important within design because in different cultures things can be represented differently. The designs were all influenced by the postmodernist movement, with fashion, lighting, furniture and graphic design (side too). Mariscal has created many intuitive unconventional and witty work. Like Neville Brody I have decided to research more into Javier Mariscal because of how simplicity is kept throughout his work and looks very modern.

David Carson David Carson is an American Graphic Designer. Who has being inspired by postmodernism, the way his style of design was based around the theme postmodernism follows, his style of design was created through how people felt or what people wanted to be true conscious reasoning. This process ensures him to continue being successful, while doing a lot of lecture programmes. When I first came across Carson’s work, I realised that there is coherence, a very direct style running through his designs. Carson uses different techniques like expressive raw photography with texture, colours, vibrant looks and appealing, by balancing agaisnt cool and soft images creating seductive pieces without over complicating the designs. But he also makes chaos and then tames the design on aesthetics. From his visuals I can see a very strong artist who produced masterfully artwork. Later on his life he has started a career in typography; working with appealing style.

Research I want my idea to be an physical object that can also be created in digital format in order to be viewed online as well as seeing it physically. But that will just be an option as I only want it to be physical. The reason behind this is because when I think about the questions asked on our brief about how Internet changes us; I want to produce something not digital unless its needed. To develop my ideas, I have being researching different things that I can design physically. After some secondary research I have decided to research concertina books because I always had an interest in creating or designing one of them. This is because they look really simple and appealing. In consideration, with the artist research I have done showed me that the work they have produced always has being simple with a twist. Therefore, concertina book caught my eye in order for me to design one. This is why I have decided to research and see what designs there are. I have realised these booklet can take up a lot of infortmation and design anything you want onto it because it provide a lot spacing. Which means I can design around the spacing provided with the use of correct paper material. I didn’t want to go for a leaflet or normal book because I feel like they are more formal than playful and concertina books look more interesting because of its style. In my research, I have come across wide range of concertina books and they all looked pleasing. I’m quiet happy with the idea I have got to start with my designing.

My Idea For my idea I want to be able to create a concertina book that shows the stages in my life that would make me happy and what I want to happen in my life in order for me to reach my final goal (in 10 years time). This links well in with the brief and would allow me to experiment physically. As I believe to be able to achieve happiness and your goal you have many stages in life. You can’t predict what will happen tomorrow. Therefore, instead of doing stages of what I want to achieve, I want to do stages in life that would make me happy. These stages in life would consider things that I want to do that would make me happy. Because if I don’t do things that makes, there is a higher chance of me not being where I want to be in 10 years time. After doing more research into concertina books, I have come to conclusion I will go ahead and improve on it. With the concertina book, I’m thinking of drawing sketches inside of my happiness in stages and a final big poster of my last stage.

Sketches

Development of Sketches

Development

My idea was to produce set of drawings (sketches) for my concertina book to be able to create that physical feel. However, doing rough sketches allowed me to see that they would have to be re-done as it would not be at a professional standard, at the first stage. Therefore, I decided to take what I have learnt in my process and production to use in my own design. To be able to do this I used my rough skethces to scan them into Illustrator and quickly go over the edges of the to be able to get the outline. This meant that I can still use my sketches just make it look more professional and make it look appealing.

Development

So with the help of Illustrator I was able to get my outlines as I wanted. But the problem that occured was the lines, as it wouldn’t let me add colour to the sections I wanted. To resolve this I inserted the image on PhotoShop as there was varities of tools that I was able to use to add colour and make it look simple. The reason I chose to go for simplicity within my designs is because researching some artists Like Neville Brody, Stefan Sagmeister showed me that a piece of design can be so simple to attract it’s audience and simplicity is what I really enjoy within designs. So I went for fashion illustration style drawings this is because fashion illustrations have always inspired me the way that they are so basic but still delivers it’s message across.

Further development

Throughout my development I realised how some of the drawings didn’t look the way I wanted it to be and weren’t contrasting agaisnt with the other drawings because of the colour use. For this reason I have decided to do further development and add minimal touches. Adding minimal touches helped to the drawings to blend with the rest of the drawings. I think this made it look more effective.

Final Outcomes

Captions for Illustrations After creating my Illustrations for my concertina book, I realised that something was missing from them. Which was a caption (or quote), to define the illustrations. I wanted to include captions in my work because captions are the most dominant read body on the in designs. This is because once the audience views the designs, they go for the caption to have that final clear understanding.

Family: Family where life begins and love never ends. Graduation: Education is key to your future. Holiday: Happiness is a key day at beach. Work: Good things come to those who work. House: Stand up, use your feet and no matter what keep forward. Travel: One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing.

Making Process (Physical) On the first stage of my making I had to make the concertina book myself, as I couldn’t find the right amount of pages from Art and crafts store. Therefore, using A2 paper I measured out the main body for book 16x16cm to form a square. I had 8 sections for each illustration.

On my second stage, I had to measure the front and the back cover’s for each end of my concertina book. To achieve this I used set of ruler and triangle sqaure. The front and the back covers will be sugar coated brown paper because I want to get the authentic look. To make the physical feel.

On my third stage, using guillotine to cut out the square faces for my covers and to cut the main body into the strips to form the long strip.

Finally, to be able to make the concertina book the card has to be folded up into the squares on each section of line to form the flips on the concertina book. To be able to do this I used the creaser in order to get the perfect fold.

Making Process (Physical) This is the stage when I had cut out all my concertina book and folded to form the book and I added to front cover. I think the colours contrast well together.

During this process I took my illustrations to print so that it can be printed out on Satin paper which can’t be done on normal printer.

Using spray mount and glue to stick the illustrations on the concertina book, which was done without any issues. However, one thing I would change is the size of the canvas.

To be able to make the cover look authentic and appealing. Using the same brown card I decided to draw some butterflies and craft it out in order to stick on the front over.

Making Process (Digital) For the digital version I have used all the illustrations I had created and imported them into After Effects to make a simple video that shows the digital side of the book as it opens up.

After the stage of importing illustrations, I made them fade out and added music to make it flow smoothly, with the concertina book opening up. I quiet enjoyed doing this, because the results was quiet good.

Final Outcome Evaluation The work that has been presented is the final outcomes for my concertina book that I will produce as a final piece of work. I have produced the illustrations using Illustrator and PhotoShop, these programs have helped me to create my sketches and allowed them to be more effective. The final outcomes of my work was up the standard that I wanted them to be as I have been able to achieve the outcomes that I desired and it matched with the idea that I have had in mind. The beneficial side during creating the pieces of work was been able to add and choose the colours, as this had given me a lot of options and enabled me to enjoy creating my designs. If I could improve on my final outcomes I would improve the look of the individual pieces where I would make the images gain a more realistic look, with in-depth detailed features. In addition with all my designs I decided to go for a white background theme without scenery so it’s bold, clear and strong. Throught my designs I have aimed to create pieces that would really make people visualise where I want to be in life and what my aspirations are that I have.
