Hubbard Award Finalists
In 1985, R.D. Hubbard dedicated a scholarship fund to recognize and encourage excellence at Butler. Mr. Hubbard and his wife, Joan Dale, have devoted many resources to the support of Butler students and facilities. The Hubbard Center, Hubbard Champions Training Center, Hubbard Welcome Center, and Hubbard Award of Excellence are but a few of the many gifts they have provided. Through the Hubbard Foundation, more than $3 million has been donated to our college. The Hubbards support numerous high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States. In late April, R.D. passed away. This great loss to our institution makes this award even more special as it is a great legacy to everything the Hubbards have done for Butler.
BAILEY BAKER Bailey is an accounting major and will continue that degree path at Wichita State University. Bailey attended Butler on a vocal music scholarship, was a resident assistant and student worker, Vice President of Phi Beta Lambda, and member of Phi Theta Kappa. She attended the Fall Leadership Conference, State Conference, and National Leadership Conference as Phi Beta Lambda vice president. At the National Conference, Bailey received first place in Statistical Analysis. She has been on the President’s Honor Roll for four semesters. Bailey said that Butler gave her the confidence she needed to choose her educational path toward accounting.
ALANIS BALZA Alanis is a vocal music education major who will complete her education at Emporia State University. A Headliner and Noteable, Alanis kept a busy schedule every semester for two years and in her “free” time also participated in Grizzly Ambassadors, Catholic Grizzlies, and was the Collegiate – National Association for Music Educators president. Alanis received multiple scholarships at Butler and is on the President’s Honor Roll. On top of this outstanding school involvement, Alanis worked two part-time jobs. Alanis credits Butler with more than teaching her in the classroom, saying she has expanded her knowledge on her career choice, musicianship, and life lessons.
HANNAH BECKER Hannah is a biology major who will continue her education at Columbia College with a major in biochemistry. A member of the Grizzlies varsity women’s soccer team, Hannah was a busy student-athlete who also volunteered, was a lab assistant, and a student worker. Hannah also excelled academically on the President’s Honor Roll, as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, NJCAA National Tournament Qualifier, and NJCAA Academic All-Honors Award. Hannah gives credit to Butler for properly preparing her to continue her education.
KYLIE LITAVNIKS Kylie majored in business administration at Butler and will major in finance at Kansas State University. A student in the Early College Business and Entrepreneurship Academy, Kylie completed two years of college while attending high school in Andover meaning she will enter K-State with a jump start in her college career. Kylie’s impressive list of high school and Butler activities includes volunteerism, part-time work, student groups, and more. Kylie is the Andover Central High School salutatorian, a Kansas Honor Scholar, and was on the President’s Honor Roll at Butler – just to name a few of her academic honors. Kylie promotes the important skills Butler taught her as she furthers her education and career.
SUMMER SCHARENBERG Summer majored in pre-nursing and will complete her education through the University of Kansas and Butler’s dual nursing degree program – a challenging, but efficient way for students to earn their associate and bachelor’s degrees simultaneously. Attending Butler on a vocal music scholarship, Summer was a lively student in Headliners, participating as costume manager, medical assistant, and a student worker, in addition to being a regular member of the choir. She received other scholarships and was on the President’s Honor Roll and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Butler helped Summer to develop her critical thinking skills and understanding the fundamentals needed for a career in nursing and beyond.
Order of the Purple The Order of the Purple was established to recognize graduates who were outstanding in scholarship, leadership, service and character. The first group of seven students was inducted into the ORDER OF THE PURPLE in the spring of 1937. Over the years, the requirements for this award have changed as standards and practices have changed. Today, to be eligible for this honor, students must have completed 30 hours at Butler and hold a 3.75 or higher total grade point average. Students inducted into ORDER OF THE PURPLE receive a commemorative medallion to wear at Commencement as a distinctive symbol of their academic achievement.
Order of the Gold In 1985, the Board of Trustees created the ORDER OF THE GOLD award for students who maintain a 4.0 GPA. Students who have completed 30 hours at Butler and achieved a 4.0 total grade point average are honored as ORDER OF THE GOLD. These recipients were inducted into ORDER OF THE PURPLE earlier today and will receive a commemorative medallion to wear at Commencement as a distinctive symbol of their academic achievement. The recipients will also receive a special display plaque during the Commencement ceremony.
Phi Theta Kappa Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society is an international honor society that recognizes and encourages scholarship among two-year college students. There are more than 1,200 chapters around the world. PTK provides opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate to exchange ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. PTK members are inducted during a special ceremony held each fall and spring semester. At Commencement, PTK members are distinguished by a yellow stole.
Early College Academies Butler’s Early College Academies offer high school students the opportunity to learn about key industries while earning college credit up to an Associate degree, industry credentials, and skills to make immediate contributions in our workforce. Early College Academy students are distinguished by a white cord.
Military Affiliation Students and faculty who have served or are presently serving as Active Duty, Reserve or Guard members will be distinguished with a Red/White/Blue Cord.

Emblems and Regalia THE PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN OF OFFICE Butler Community College’s Chain of Office is burnished bronze. It features a large central medallion with the Butler logo “B” and the words Butler Community College, Kansas. The Chain also displays our four timeless institutional values. On the left, over the President’s heart, is the insignia of helping hands and the words “Service” and “Caring.” On the right is a lamp of learning with the words “Quality” and “Integrity.”
THE COLLEGE MACE The college mace is an ornamental staff symbolizing the power of the college. Butler Community College’s mace is made of hickory, a tree native to Kansas. It features large central medallions with the Butler logo “B” and a continuous band denoting the establishment of the college in 1927 and a reiteration of our timeless institutional values: Quality, Integrity, Service and Caring. The mace is topped with a flame symbolizing the transcendent power of education.
ACADEMIC DRESS Academic regalia evolved from caps and gowns worn in medieval universities. The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are usually made of plain black material without trimming, while the gown for the doctor’s degree is faced on the front with black or colored velvet and has three bars of the same material across the sleeves. The bachelor’s gown has long open sleeves, the master’s longer closed sleeves with arm slits at the elbow, and the doctor’s bell-shaped sleeves extending to the wrist. Hoods are worn by master’s and doctoral recipients. These hoods can be distinguished by both length and color, with master’s hoods being three and one-half feet long and doctor’s four. The color of the velvet hood edging is wider for the doctoral hood than the master’s. The lining of the hood shows the official color or colors of the institution which awarded the degree. The color of the hood edging indicates the area of study in which the degree was received.
