1. 10.

You and your partner are like ships passing in the night. You’d like to meet. Preferably in the Med.

Or, you know, you just have a free week next September.

2. You’re not just burnt out, you feel like a 10,000-year-old carbon deposit.

9.

3.

You want all the adventure you can handle... but none of the adversity.

You can’t get that Macau-style pork chop sandwich out of your head from your last B&R trip.

8. You need less news cycle, and a lot more bi cycle.

Top 10 Reasons You Need a B&R Trip in 2020

7. No matter how hard they try, nobody in your office will ever find you in the outer reaches of Patagonia.

4. You’ve found that jewellery, cars and new kitchens don’t say “I love you” nearly as much as a B&R trip.

5. 6.

The closest you have come to wildlife lately is day one at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

While a B&R family excursion costs slightly more than family therapy, it works waaaaay faster.

(Frankly, any reason is good enough to book some B&R bliss. The real question is... why the heck not?)

LETTER FROM LUC & GEORGE

Seeing the world differently. For you, the right trip might mean a week of challenging bike rides—your mind singularly focused as you clock mileage up the crook of a mountain; it could be about connecting with friends over leisurely walks and lingering meals; perhaps it’s reckoning with the sublime while hiking vertiginous peaks paired with otherworldly lakes; or maybe it’s revelling in ancient traditions and finding rejuvenation in thermal hot springs (after zooming through the countryside on your e-bike); or, it’s hearing the spine-tingling crack of a hyena’s laugh with your family by your side. Our trips vary wildly. Underlying every trip, however, is the same way we aim to see, and savour, the world: slowly, and as people who are interested in the very best of each region on a local scale, with an eye to authenticity. As you parse through the pages of our 2020 Trip Collection, you’ll see lists curated by our travel experts—true specialists in awe and wonder. We hope they’ll help you choose your next adventure. See you on the road, Luc Robinson and George Butterfield

Slow down to see the world...

“B&R trips allow you to experience the locale intimately and in a way that makes you feel you’re on the inside track.” —John W. Craddock Jr., Bordeaux

France France isn’t a destination to us, it’s our home—and we certainly love showing it off! We ensure that you experience France as the French do: decadently, poetically, and fashionably before anyone else. Come along as we crack open France’s coolest, most charming, and sometimes even clandestine cellars (for private tastings), kitchens (for private meals), and ancient castles (for a divine, windswept night or two). Ooh la la.

FRANCE

Our Experts These trip designers are downright crazy about France. They have the most fun jobs in the world, so don’t hesitate to put them to it.

Annik Boulva Burgundy, Normandy & Brittany — This lifelong jet-setter and competitive skier is a bloodhound for beautiful experiences—whether it’s finding the most adorable village in Normandy, or tracking down the richest, most buttery Chardonnay in Burgundy. Travellers say her trips don’t just wow you. They whoa you.

Dana Quinn Provence — Expat Dana Quinn has left few stones unturned in Europe. In Provence, she knows every hilltop village, limestone ridge, and lavender field worth seeing (or smelling). Want to sink your teeth into the culinary scene? The viniculture and legendary rosés? She’s your gal.

Jérôme Boré Alsace, Bordeaux, Champagne, Dordogne, Loire — The question isn’t “Should I go on a Jérôme-designed trip?” The question is: “How will I return to normal life after?” This Frenchman’s trips are famous for their passion, decadence, and thrills—visual, oenological, and gastronomic.

Marya Valli Corsica — With 15 years’ experience, this Corsica local’s trips are more poem than itinerary. We know, we know, that sounds a bit much: but when you’re floating on a gulet in a quiet cove, sipping a vermentinu from your new best friend (a local vintner), you’ll get it. And so much more.

Recent Bespoke Trips in France:

No Boys Allowed Provence Four women had a desire to hit the town (or, more specifically, the serene French countryside), sans the guys. We sent them to Provence for five days of the royal treatment: private châteaux lunches, lavender-lined paths, sensuous spa visits, and wine tastings that left them blushing rosé. History Buffs Dive in Normandy Eight friends asked us to immerse them in the history of Normandy from 1066 to 1944. They biked, walked, horsebacked and sailed their way through nine centuries of cultural and culinary refinement. Oysters? Calvados? Plenty. Our secret weapon? A historian who has a back door key to everywhere.

Along the way, enjoy antique shopping and a visit to a private domaine for a tasting hosted by a former Alain Ducasse sommelier you won’t soon forget.

PROVENCE SELF-GUIDED BIKING Private Trip 6 Days / 5 Nights Enthusiast | From US$4,795

Provence is one of France’s most sensuous regions, but it’s also pretty serious. To wit: Mont Ventoux— of Tour de France fame—is where serious cyclists stretch their legs. We take in the seriously delightful village of Roussillon, visit a 12thC necropolis, cross a Roman bridge and do some serious dining at Jérôme Blanchet. Hotel Crillon le Brave, perched above sprawling vineyards and olive groves, offers us seriously stunning views. Former B&R guide Vicki was so serious about Provence she up and moved here—and she’d love to show you around.

PROVENCE SELF-GUIDED WALKING Private Trip 6 Days / 5 Nights Enthusiast | From US$3,495

Strolling through the South of France doesn’t require a chaperone—just years of planning to find hidden trails to ancient hilltop villages, and charming hotels with pools where you can cool off when you’re done. Local connections help too, like at Domaine de Marie, where our friends host you for a tasting and exquisite dinner made from justpicked Provençal produce.

RHONE RIVER CRUISE BIKING Small Group Trip 8 Days / 7 Nights Recreational | From US$7,995

Why unpack luggage each day when you could be unpacking the best of Provence and the Côtes du Rhône? Cruise the Rhône aboard a Uniworld river ship and go overboard (in a good way): savour exceptional cuisine, the vineyards of Beaujolais, a tour of Arles, and a cooking class at the legendary Paul Bocuse Institute. Cruising the Rhône with bikes in tow? Vive la différence.

Italy The secret to Italy? Communing with Italians (some of whom work in our Tuscan office). That’s why we don’t just find the best pasta on Yelp—we find out when our local friends are free, then invite you to a feast on their estate. (Grazie, Lungarellas!) We don’t merely visit the Statue of David—we host a private dinner party at the Accademia. And we don’t just “see” Italy—we plunge you directly into la dolce vita. ITALY

Our Experts Spend enough time in Italy and you’ll learn a simple truth: its most unforgettable experiences can’t be unearthed by outsiders. You have to live here.

Christina Cain Basilicata, Puglia — If it’s off the beaten path, quiet, and soul-stirring— it’s probably Christina’s doing. This Italy aficionado loves to zig when others zag, whether it’s a Prosecco tasting at brunch (surprisingly transcendent) or Tuscany at Christmas (serious David Copperfieldlevel magic). christina.cain@butterfield.com

Courtney Mundy Amalfi Coast, Tuscany, Umbria — When it comes to local immersion, no one tops Courtney. She’s now so entrenched in Tuscany that the locals consider her one of their own. At home wherever the Chianti and olive oil flow freely, she’s planned trips across Europe, but Italy remains her first and truest love.

Dana Quinn Cinque Terre, Italian Lakes, Sicily — With a travel career comprised of nearly two decades of guiding and designing trips, expat Dana Quinn has left few stones unturned in Europe. And underneath those stones? Under-the-radar gems like mountain pine grappa and a Sicilian cave that whispers to you.

Georgia Yuill Dolomites — Georgia joined B&R in order to spend one summer as a guide before getting a “real” job. That was 20 years ago. Now this Milan-based Italophile is our resident expert on la dolce vita, with over 150 beautiful, breathless, unforgettable, one-of-a-kind trips under her (fine Italian leather) belt.

Marya Valli Piemonte, Sardinia — With 15 years’ experience designing artful adventures, this Corsica local’s trips are more poem than itinerary. We know, we know, that sounds a bit much: but when you’re sipping Barolo in Piemonte and watching the willow trail its branches in the serene Po River, you’ll get it. And so much more.

Nathan Lane Prosecco, Veneto — Sure, he’s planned over a hundred mindboggling trips. Sure, Condé Nast Traveler named him Vietnam’s Top Travel Expert. Sure, he knows 17 regions—from Puglia to Sri Lanka—so well you’d think he was born there. But does that really mean you should have Nathan design a trip for you? Well... yes!

Spain & Portugal We’ve been basking in the beauty and splendour of Europe’s sun-soaked southwest corner for decades, and we’ve learned how to seize every moment of it: gaping at the stunning Costa Brava, sipping Rioja’s worldclass vintages, communing with the Camino de Santiago, marvelling at the cascading hills of the Douro Valley. Our Experts It’s a mad fight to design trips for B&R in this region—the only place in the world where there’s a love for slowing down that surpasses our own.

Christina Cain Costa Brava — If it’s completely off the beaten path, quiet, and soul-stirring—it’s probably Christina’s doing. She knows the Iberian Peninsula like the back of her hand, and loves to zig when others zag. On Christina’s trips, even during peak season, we ditch all the tourists for a remarkable ‘insider’ experience.

Christine Tucker Andalucia, Basque Country, Mallorca — When we found out Christine had been to Paris 10+ times and had never gone up the Eiffel Tower, we knew she was a keeper. With an MA in sustainable tourism to draw on, she elevates “the road less travelled” to a religion, plotting trips all over Spain and Portugal.

Oscar Biedma Portugal, Rioja — After guiding B&R trips in every nook and cranny of western Europe, it was time for Oscar to start writing his own stories. Now a master storyteller, all you have to do is give him a few details, and he’ll whip you up an epic poem, a thrilling serial, a gripping novel, an unforgettable aria—whatever moves you.

Steph Gulledge Camino de Santiago — After studying in Canada, Spain and France, Steph decided the best way to continue her education was to be constantly on the move. Could she have found a better or more exciting institute for higher learning than B&R? And her syllabus? Wildly varying. Visually stunning. Naturally arresting. And positively delicious.

“We were spoiled by what I call B&R magic: all those special relationships with locals and thoughtful surprises along the way.” —Mary Beth Manion Morell, Balkans

Central & Eastern Europe Fifty years ago or so, B&R made its first journey through Bavaria. We were young, scrappy, and eager to truly experience the region, its history and its people. Well, a few things have changed since then (the hotels are a lot nicer), but one thing remains constant: our style of deep cultural immersion. And that’s not just in the Weissbier.

Northern Europe It’s nice to have lifelong friends. Especially if they live in the picturesque Scottish Highlands, on the Emerald Isle, in the Cotswolds and across Scandinavia. NORTHERN EUROPE

Our Experts Northern Europe has always been earth-shatteringly beautiful. But now it’s more accessible than ever. Our designers are there. And ready to share.

Dane Tredway England, Ireland, Scotland — Dane’s personal connections are the stuff of legend. (Seriously: this is the guy who got by on the kindness of locals when his credit card was blocked for the duration of a trip across Thailand.) Fortunately, his connections can be yours: all of Dane’s trips are infused with visits with his close local friends and deep cultural immersion.

Gabriella Brundu Finland, Norway — Gabriella insists the best way to get to know a region is to run through it, so it’s no surprise she’s run marathons all over northern Europe. Now she helps others find their footing (albeit at a more tranquil pace) in Norway and Finland, which she will convince you are the two most stunning countries in the world.

Marya Valli Denmark, Sweden — With over 15 years of experience of weaving her magic, Marya’s trips are more poem than itinerary. We know, we know, that sounds a bit much: but when you’re careening across a snowfield in the dead of night to get the best possible view of the northern lights, hot chocolate in hand, you’ll get it. And so much more.

Orsolya Kako Iceland — This lifelong rover’s trips—backed by 15 years’ experience—have compelled gasps, cries of joy, and even the odd proposal (yes, really). Will your Orsolya moment be soaking it up in a geothermal hot spring after a long hike? Or popping the cork on some Champagne high atop a glacier? There’s only one way to find out...

Recent Bespoke Trips in Northern Europe:

Meet the Ancestry Iceland The Jensen clan had done family reunion picnics... to death. So we sent them back to their Icelandic roots: glacial walks, cascading waterfalls, northern lights, otherworldly vistas, hidden hot springs and chic hotels. By journey’s end, even their surliest niece pleaded to stay longer. (Trust us: this was no small feat.) Re: Joyce Ireland How do you appease one James Joyce fanatic, eight golfers and three musicians? First we found the heart of Ulysses’ Dublin, then we hit the countryside—biking and golfing our way from one castle inn to another. Americas Yes, our journeys in the Americas are the closest to home—but we’re proud to say that they’re also some of our most otherworldly. In Patagonia, glacial hikes through the Andes end at lavish haciendas. Further north, we have hush-hush new finds in favourites like Peru, the Galapagos and Costa Rica. And in North America, we taste at groundbreaking vineyards, surf bombs off secret beaches, rappel into canyons, and kayak with sea lions. Dorothy, you aren’t in Kansas anymore.

Our Experts The Andes, from top to bottom, are our stomping grounds. And in the north? We love our own backyard, where our roots (and routes) are deep.

Ana Figueroa Argentina, Bolivia — Ana is well into her second decade of crafting journeys that capture the heart and soul of Argentina, her home country, and Bolivia, her second love. She can hook you up with the best bikes and hikes on the planet, but if you really want next level, ask her for an equine adventure.

Annik Boulva Utah, Southwest US — This lifelong jet-setter and competitive skier is a bloodhound for beautiful experiences—whether it’s finding the most spectacular ski chalet in Telluride or plotting an epic bike adventure in Canyonlands National Park. Travellers say her trips don’t just wow you. They whoa you.

Dale Sherrow California, Central America — After surfing his way around the world, Dale decided to hang ten in Costa Rica and Mexico, the two places he loves most. But make no mistake, this is no surfer dude. He is deeply connected to the people, culture and cuisine here, and every trip he crafts feels like a piece of art.

Dane Tredway Canadian Arctic, Quebec — Dane’s personal connections are the stuff of legend. (Seriously: this is the guy who got by on the kindness of locals when his credit card was blocked for the duration of a trip across Thailand.) Fortunately, his connections can be yours: all of Dane’s trips are infused with deep cultural immersion.

Marianne Abraham British Columbia, Rocky Mountains, Alaska, Hawaii — Marianne is half of the first brother-sister duo to work their magic at B&R since our founders Martha and Sidney Robinson. A spectacular skier, chef and adventurer, no one knows more about going off-piste, off-menu and off-Google than Marianne. Travel + Leisure agrees. She’s on their “A-List.”

Steph Gulledge Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Patagonia — After studying in Canada, Spain and France, Steph decided the best way to continue her education was to be constantly on the move. Could she have found a better institute for higher learning than B&R? And her syllabus? Wildly varying. Visually stunning. And positively delicious.

Veronika Macas Ecuador, Galapagos, Peru — Slowing down to see the world is in Veronika’s blood: she had her own frequent flyer number by the age of six months. She also goes big as a B&R Trip Designer. Big grandeur. Big wilderness. Big vistas. Big whales. Big surf. Big tortoises (she is our Galapagos guru, after all). And big stories for the grandkids.

Our Experts It’s a vast, mysterious place of startling extremes and ravishing beauty. You may come here only once. We, on the other hand, are never leaving.

Christine Tucker Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda — When we found out Christine had been to Paris 10+ times and had never gone up the Eiffel Tower, we knew she was a keeper. With an MA in sustainable tourism to draw on, she elevates “the road less travelled” to a religion: plotting eclectic trips everywhere from Spain to Tanzania.

Michele Harvey Botswana, Madagascar, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe — With 200 B&R trips in the books, calling this South Africa native “impressive” is a criminal understatement. Just one of her claims to fame? Spontaneously conspiring with Nepali locals to surprise her American B&R travellers with Thanksgiving turkey— at an altitude of 9,000 feet.

Nathan Lane Jordan, Oman — Sure, he’s planned over a hundred trips. Sure, Condé Nast Traveler named him Vietnam’s Top Travel Expert. Sure, he knows 17 regions— from Oman to Sri Lanka—so well you’d think he was born there. But does that really mean you should have Nathan design a trip for you? Well... yes! His trips take travel to a whole new level.

Orsolya Kako Morocco — This lifelong rover’s trips—backed by over 15 years of experience—have compelled gasps, cries of joy, and even the odd proposal (yes, really).
