Possible Side Effects
OF TRAVELLING WITH BUTTERFIELD & ROBINSON
B&R is not for everyone.
While B&R is widely considered the crème de la crème of luxury active travel, travelling with B&R does not come without the risk of side effects—some temporary, but others prolonged. Before taking any B&R trip, you are encouraged to read the following pages carefully.
May cause:
Random outbursts of laughter.
Our trips are imaginative, immersive and interesting. And it goes without saying they provide authentic experiences that help you foster a deep connection to the region. But most importantly, our trips are fun Expect belly laughs till it hurts.
Our routes aren’t routine—they’re revelatory. One minute you’re soaking up a breathtaking vista, the next you’re swooshing down a thrilling descent. We have a thing about never being boring or predictable. Get ready to be moved.
May cause:
Watering of the eyes.
Stay hydrated on your trip because you may find you get teary (in a good way). If we don’t get you with the surprise aria in the medieval monastery, we’ll get you when the local músicos suddenly serenade you at dinner. Bring tissue.
May cause:
Excessive salivation.
We don’t just taste a place—we savour it. There’s no better way to explore a culture than through its cuisine, so we go to extraordinary lengths to find delectable local foods prepared with passion. Your palate will be forever altered.
Feelings of intense connection.
On Day 1, you might feel a bit cautious (you’re with strangers after all). But by Day 2 you’ll realize you’re with the warmest, funniest, and most unpretentious travel companions you could ever imagine. By Day 6? You’ll be planning the reunion.
May cause:
Inability to speak.
We’ve literally combed the planet for the most spectacular finds on earth. Whether you’re watching glaciers calving icebergs in Patagonia, lions feeding in Mpumalanga, or the aurora borealis lighting up the sky in Norway… we will leave you utterly speechless.
You’ve been warned.
There are serious side effects of travelling with B&R fortunately they are all the good kind. “Life-changing” might be the most common side effect we hear and there’s good reason for that.
While we certainly offer beautiful hotels, wonderful cuisine and one-of-a-kind access to the most spectacular parts of a region, crafting the journey of a lifetime requires every one of our team members to shine: from the Experience Designers who mastermind your trip, to our Operations team ensuring every behind-the-scenes detail has been perfected, to our spectacular guides who bring it all to life. But most importantly, it is you, our travellers, who challenge and inspire us to raise the bar year after year.
We’re excited to be finishing the 2023 season by joining some of you on the road. I’ll be guiding a new biking adventure from Vienna to Budapest, crossing through the former Iron Curtain, and George will be inspiring travellers on a new biking trip through the lesser-known hills of Romania.
In 2024, we’ll be travelling to 56 countries; adding several exciting and adventurous new Scheduled trips; and we will have a new fleet of custom road bikes—we can’t wait for you to try them! There’s a lot going on! Not to mention our Bespoke Experience Designers who continue to weave their magic across six continents.
2024 is going to be a spectacular vintage, ready for a taste?
See you on the road,
—Mike Scarola, CEOHow we travel.
At B&R, we’ve elevated the craft of designing active adventures to an art form. We’ve created our very own standard of travel for one simple reason: when your time is precious and you’re travelling halfway around the world, we think you deserve a journey that moves you—and surprises you—at every turn.
Privatized Group Trips
Bring your own gang and have it all to yourselves.
Whether your organizational skills are good, bad, or hopeless (are you nodding yes to this one?), this is your chance to shine as a ringleader. Simply choose the friends or family members you’d like to go with, pick a Scheduled trip you like the looks of, and call us. Perfect for groups of eight or more, these trips are fully guided. The only difference is that you and your posse have everything to yourselves.
Self-Guided Trips
You’re on your own (but we’ve always got your back).
Have an independent streak? Looking for a little more intimacy? Our Self-Guided trips combine all the hallmarks of a B&R trip with the freedom to pace each day exactly as you’d like. We greet you on your first day and set you up with everything you need to get rolling. Then it’s just you and the open road... but we’re always just a phone call away.
Scheduled Group Trips
Find a trip you love and hop on a scheduled departure.
Our Scheduled trips pull together a small group of fellow wanderers (no more than 16) for the trip of a lifetime. We float up mountains together, sip Barolos together, poke around castles together, puff our way to the top of Tuscan hills together… or not. You can do your own thing any time you want! These are fully guided trips with detailed itineraries that we pay strict attention to—or not! On a B&R trip, there’s always room for spontaneity.
Bespoke Trips
Go Bespoke. Return Bespeechless.
Bespoke trips are private trips made to fit. How big is your dream? Small? Medium? Large? Jumbo? Our team of dream-weaving Experience Designers will craft a Bespoke journey that’s just right for you. Looking for a multi-generational getaway in your own private villa? A retreat with your colleagues? A birthday celebration with your best friends? Want extra guides? A private jet? Massages every day? Just say the word and we’ll start weaving your dream trip with every stitch of every day made-to-measure.
How we move.
Slow down to see, taste, touch and smell the world. When you bike or walk, you can’t help but become engrossed in your journey. When there’s nothing between you and your surroundings and you have all the time in the world to chat with the local fisher, walk the vineyard with the winemaker, or wander the local market with a great chef, you experience first-hand what makes the region so special.
Biking
Seeing the world on two wheels.
There’s nothing quite like biking from one luxe hotel to another on quiet country lanes (while someone else schleps your bags). On a bike, the world opens all around you. The sights, sounds, and scents in villages, vineyards, and bucolic landscapes become delightfully real, no longer the stuff of dreams. With three different styles of bikes to choose from (top-of-the-line road bikes, hybrids, and e-bikes for that extra push), and trips that range from easygoing to expert, we make it incredibly fun to grab life by the handlebars.
Multi-Active
Seeing the world from many perspectives.
We bike, hike, walk, boat, swim, snorkel, kayak, whitewater raft, horseback ride, camel ride, sail, surf, zip-line, fly-fish, dogsled… we even go by ox cart! We aren’t about confining you to a single mode of travel or activity—the opposite, in fact. We give you the opportunity to experience a region in whatever way gives you the most memorable experience. However we move, we immerse you in the very best the region has to offer.
Walking
Seeing the world one step at a time.
Like our biking trips, our walking trips are meticulously crafted so we can go from hotel to hotel on our own steam, stopping to smell the wild rosemary along the way. We go slowly, we see more, and we completely immerse you in the local culture. Think of us as taking you off-road, off-menu, and off-Google: you experience magical sights, tastes, and locals you’d never, ever find on your own. Life is way too short to rush. So, we walk. And talk. And give you the inside scoop on everything.

AMERICA
EUROPE LATIN AMERICA
France
WE’VE
France isn’t a destination to us, it’s our home —and we certainly love showing it off! We ensure that you experience France as the French do: decadently, poetically, and fashionably before anyone else. Come along as we crack open France’s coolest, most charming, and sometimes even clandestine cellars (for private tastings), kitchens (for private meals), and ancient castles (for a divine, windswept night or two). Ooh la la.
“Magic happened every night. Following the day of riding, we all got together, sharing stories of the day over wine. We were tired but proud of our hard work and ready to relax and celebrate the day.”

New Zealand
Hit nine ecosystems in one trip, from thundering beaches to pristine glaciers. Luxuriate in worldclass lodges.
New Zealand Hiking
New Zealand’s breathtaking trails are made for hikers. They’re even better when you link them with boats and helicopters.
New Zealand & Australia
How about a grand journey from Sydney’s Bondi Beach, the Great Barrier Reef, and Melbourne’s vibrant laneways, to N.Z.’s Fiordland, Doubtful Sound, and remote glaciers? Just as grand? The lodges that will pamper you.
Rob Grieve
Rob loves nothing more than showing off his stomping grounds. He’s been our (wildly popular) New Zealand and Australia experience designer for over a dozen years. He will share the true magic of these diverse regions. The landscapes are larger than life— so too are his many friends!
Stroll on a deserted beach with huge rollers crashing down on you. Inhale the mist on a majestic fjord. Walk through ancient rainforests. Bask in the bucolic countryside. Bike through mountain foothills. Shear some sheep with our mates. Have a heli drop you on top of a glacier. And explore the most beautiful vineyard in the world. All this on one trip? No wuckas! When you come this far, you get duly rewarded.
ONLY B&R
In Australia, the only thing that can compete with the mind-boggling scenery is our selection of hotels—some of the best wilderness lodges on the planet.
WHERE WE GO
“We loved everything about our trip. The country, the people, the outrageously nice lodges. Everything was planned just right, and just for us.”
—CATHERINE S.

Newfoundland
Some of the best hiking in the world, and beautiful Fogo Island, where you’ll marvel at whales and icebergs (and the Fogo Island Inn).
When we’re not combing the planet for great finds, Canada is our own giant backyard. So we know where to find glacier-carved fjords, oceans churning with orca, ancient rainforests, the most delectable victuals in North America (Vive le Québec!), mind-boggling fly-fishing, Viking settlements, sun-soaked vineyards and, surprisingly, some of the best golf in the world. B&R in Canada? Let us tee it up for you.
“Stumbling upon a glacial lake with clear blue waters seemed otherworldly. B&R crafted an itinerary that allowed us to experience the beauty to the fullest!” —ROSE M.
ONLY B&R
We’re a Canadian company. So, naturally, we’re sorry. We’re sorry the chefs will literally ruin food for you when you get back home. We’re sorry the avant-garde luxe boutique hotels you’ll stay in will make you doubt the quality of every hotel you’ve ever stayed in. And we’re sorry that the jawdropping landscapes we immerse you in will make places you’ve travelled to in the past seem ordinary. We’re so sorry. How will you ever forgive us?

Our Guides, the consummate hosts.
B&R guides are actors, artists, lawyers, historians, musicians, biologists, sommeliers, former Olympians, filmmakers, and photographers. They’re also interpreters, bike mechanics, cultural attachés, consummate hosts, and one helluva lot of fun.
Most importantly? Our guides are mind readers. It’s in their DNA. They know what you’d like even before you do.
Activity Levels
We set the stage. You set the pace. We love ditching the tourists to explore magical places you would never find on your own—and we love doing it on our own steam. For us, being outside in the fresh air and keeping active is what it’s all about. We classify each of our trips according to how far you might want to bike or walk each day and how hilly the terrain is.
Our activity levels range from 1 (occasional bikers and hikers who like to stop and smell a lot of roses) to 5 (experts who move so quickly the scenery is a blur). But these levels are merely a guide. You always set your own pace. Worried about hills? Our e-bikes are a great leveller. Marianne Vos is in your group? No worries. Your guides have tougher routes up their sleeves. Getting a bit tuckered out? Take the afternoon off and hit the spa!
Sweet Rides
a hybrid, or an e-bike, we have the perfect wheels for you.
state-of-the-art, finely tuned machines you won’t want to part with.
The B&R Slow Fund
Thinking globally, acting locally.
For us, ethical tourism isn’t something we practise when it’s convenient: it’s a full-time commitment. We tread softly and give back wherever we travel. Through our Slow Fund, we invest in projects that focus on education, culture, and conservation. We invest 5% of our overall profit to Slow Fund initiatives each year that benefit the regions we visit.
SELECT FEATURED INITIATIVES:
Conserving Species & Iconic Landscapes with African Parks Zimbabwe, Africa
Acknowledging the pandemic’s impact on African conservation funding, B&R partnered with African Parks, aiding Matusadona National Park in Zimbabwe in 2023. B&R travellers engaged with African Parks experts, grasping wildlife conservation efforts first-hand.
Scholarship Fund with Kuska School Ollantaytambo, Peru
Kuska School, the sole rural education provider in Ollantaytambo, promotes a multicultural setting to nurture community and environmental awareness. B&R supports a community scholarship fund until 2024, ensuring equal educational opportunities.
Empowering Local Women in the Safari Industry Zambia, Africa
Traditionally male-dominated, safari guiding in Africa is evolving. African Bush Camps Foundation, with sponsorship by the Slow Fund, provides safari guide training and work placement for women.
(B&R travellers can meet participants at the properties.)
Replanting Olive Trees with OlivaMi Puglia, Italy
Xylella, a plant pathogen, has destroyed over 21 million olive trees in Puglia. The Slow Fund has partnered with OlivaMi to revive Salento’s landscape via tree planting and adoption, re-establishing jobs for farmers, and reinvigorating extra virgin olive oil production in Puglia.
