More Vigor DNA Q&A . . . . . . . . . . 16

early 15 years ago, Bill Flournoy, president of Likely Land & Livestock Co., along with his brothers — John and David — made the decision to join the Harris Ranch Partnership for Quality program. After 15 years of using only Angus bulls, Flournoy says Likely Livestock has seen a decrease in calf vigor, reproduction and longevity. So the decision was made to add Hereford bulls to the mix. “Our cow herd got to be straight black and was getting a little ‘dull,’” Flournoy says. “We have a good bunch of Angus cows with good udders but we were struggling to get our cows bred. We also saw our neighbors using Hereford bulls on black cows.”

Flournoy says he was excited when he heard about the Harris Ranch Heterosis Project. The heterosis study, which started in 2005, was conducted in cooperation with California State University, Chico; Lacey Livestock; Harris Feeding Co.; and Harris Ranch Beef Co. The objective of the project was to conduct a controlled crossbreeding system comparing progeny sired by Hereford and Angus

bulls under commercial conditions, emphasizing economic differences at the ranch, feedlot and packing plant. The three-year, real-world commercial heterosis project comparing progeny from Hereford and Angus bulls when crossed on Angus-based cows proved calves sired by Hereford bulls have a $30 per head documented advantage in feedlot profitability when compared to Angus-sired calves. The study also documented a maternal advantage of 7% higher pregnancy rate when comparing the Hereford-sired females to Angus-sired females. For more about the

Harris Heterosis Research Project, visit Hereford.org/HarrisHeterosisProject. With the results of the Harris project documenting the advantages of heterosis, the Flournoy brothers made the decision to purchase Hereford bulls to utilize on their Angus-based cows. In 2011 Hereford bulls that met the carcass and growth specifications set by Harris were purchased and utilized in the Likely Livestock herd. “We went to Hereford bulls to get more vigor in our cattle,” Flournoy says. “Not only in our calves but also in continued on page 14...

3) There is limited infrastructure in the country at this time to support a modern beef system like we have in America, and they are desperate for education. 4) Ninety percent of the population speaks Russian and not very many speak English, a language barrier that can make business dealings a challenge. 5) The country’s current government has been sovereign and independent from the former Soviet Union for just 21 years. Democracy is in development and very different from ours here in the U.S. 6) The government pays qualifying producers a 50% subsidy on the value of the cattle and transport, and the balance is financed on a low-interest-based government loan program. Kazakhstan producers are reimbursed by the government after the cattle arrive. This process brings up a major question of how cattle will be paid for here in the states. 7) The growing price of Hereford cattle due to relatively low U.S. inventories and the heightened demand for Hereford range bulls and females has challenged Kazakhstan producers’ ability to purchase Herefords not just from the U.S. but from other countries as well. 8) Because of the harsh winter climate, Kazakhstan producers may want only to purchase cattle from temperate or colder winter climates so that the cattle are well adapted. After returning from our trip and evaluating the opportunity in its entirety, the AHA Board has had excellent discussion regarding what the AHA’s role should be in these types of marketing opportunities. Here are a few thoughts from those conversations: 1) The AHA should inform the entire membership of these opportunities as they arise and remind our breeders of the risk and how to avoid risk in foreign trade. 2) The AHA should communicate the value of Hereford cattle to exporters and caution membership against under-pricing cattle that may have more opportunity value in them here at home than what the export bid might be. 3) It is recommended that AHA members work with professional state-side export agents such as BHC or the KazBeef group and make contract assurance that payment will be secured or guaranteed either before or within 24 hours of shipment. 4) Members should make sure they have discussed freight to the quarantine facility as they are negotiating price. Is it figured into the price or freight on board, which makes it the seller’s responsibility, or will the buyer assume the cost of shipment to quarantine? 5) Members must ensure they understand the health regulation. What are the tests, should cattle Hereford.org

be tested before they leave each farm or ranch or after, and who is responsible for the testing cost? 6) Members should make no warranty or guarantee of cattle performance. On the one hand, producers should never send cattle to a customer that would not meet minimum standards for functionality and quality, but management and stress can create problems in the best of cattle after a trip halfway around the world. Members should also not forget that Kazakhstan management expertise and facilities are not up to modern expectations yet. Global demand for beef cattle is a real opportunity, but producers should remember some of these countries do not conduct business

A typical Kazakhstan livestock operation.

the way we traditionally do, so they should be cautious. Secondly, members must remember that the demand for Hereford cattle here in the U.S. is growing more rapidly than our ability to grow production, provided drought

conditions do not alter that trend. As more information develops, the AHA staff and Board will make sure AHA members are informed of those opportunities. HW

Bid to Support Foundation Thanks to the supporters of the Hereford Research Foundation (HRF), we are able to continue and invest in industry-leading research. Again this year, BuyHereford.com will be hosting a fundraising auction for the foundation. A variety of unique items and opportunities will be up for bid Aug. 21 on BuyHereford.com. For the last two years, BuyHereford.com has been hosting these annual auctions filled with unique lots to benefit the foundation, and each auction has garnered more than $20,000 to help fund research.

A functioning part of the Hereford Youth Foundation of America

This year again, thanks to generous donations, there are 25 exciting lots on which to bid — everything from advertising opportunities to premier Hereford genetics, whether they be a pick of the herd or semen and embryo A functioning part of the Hereford Youth Foundation of America

packages, to hunting and fishing opportunities all across the U.S. Again, Gallagher has donated state-of-the-art fencing equipment, and Sullivan Show Supply has donated one of its best items. Also, Purina is getting in on the action with a voucher to purchase something every cattleman needs: mineral. The HRF was established in 2009 as a division of the Hereford Youth Foundation of America, a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization, to support breed improvement projects outside the scope of the AHA budget.

The fund is necessary to continue to prove the Hereford breed’s advantages with real-world substantiated data. This fund has already supported the heterosis research projects like the Harris Ranch study and helped set the groundwork for a new GrowSafe system built at Olsen Ranch, Harrisburg, Neb. Research projects are expensive, yet they benefit everyone producing Hereford seedstock. It is necessary to continue to support this foundation and, in turn, to support continuing and new projects for the betterment of the breed.

Historic Hereford prints for sale Show your support of Hereford youth and get a piece of history when you

purchase a set of beautiful prints being offered by the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA). The original Anxiety 4 and Silver oil-on-canvas paintings currently grace the walls of the AHA and, in an effort to preserve the authentic artwork, limited-edition canvas prints were made and sold at “The Harvest” event last summer.

The Giclee prints generated close to $25,000, and now HYFA is offering 11×14 prints of the historic bull and female. The prints can be purchased as a set or individually today at HerefordYouthFoundation.org. The set is $50, or each individual print is $30. The Anxiety 4 bull is credited as the father of American Herefords and was imported in the early 1800s by Charles Gudgell and Thomas A. Simpson of Missouri. The Silver cow is the matron of the breed and was the first registered Hereford cow in England dating back to 1742, when Benjamin Tomkins, the primary founder of the breed, bred a bull calf out of Silver to two cows, Pidgeon and Mottle. The paintings were commissioned by AHA in 1953 by artist Herman de Jori to hang in the halls of the AHA. They were painted from early drawings with colors typical of early English prints.

“CHB Bites” is a column designed to keep you in-the-know about Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) program happenings. You can also follow CHB on Facebook at facebook.com/CertifiedHerefordBeef.

CHB LLC introduces new ambassadors In May Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) LLC welcomed two new CHB Ambassadors to the program: Kim Coley, Sewanee, Tenn., and Nicole Morrison, Mount Gilead, Ohio. These women will help promote the CHB® product across the country in various ways, including attending store openings and promotional festivities, and educating consumers about the benefits and quality of CHB. Coley has a strong agricultural background and has participated in an agricultural Extension program about educating the consumer and government officials about the beef industry. In addition, her family has shown cattle across the country, and her husband, Tommy, is an American Kim Coley Hereford Association (AHA) fieldman for the Southeast region. Morrison is the food service director for the Northmor Local School District in Galion, Ohio. In addition to running a catering business, she and her husband, Tom, also raise Hereford cattle. Brad Ellefson, CHB LLC vice president of retail accounts, says the addition of these two new CHB Ambassadors will serve the CHB brand well. Nicole Morrison “With the addition of these two new CHB Ambassadors, we’ll have the opportunity to support the growth of the CHB program in retail, as well as food service,” he says. “These two women are knowledgeable and passionate about CHB and will be a tremendous asset to the brand.”

CHB for a cause On May 17 CHB was well represented for charity. During the “Cookout for a Cause,” organized by CHB vendor The Butcher Block, Quincy, Ill., customers enjoyed free giveaways and delicious CHB product in support of West Central/Area 11 Special Olympics Illinois. In all, CHB LLC staff served nearly 75 lb. of sliced beef brisket, 75 lb. of bacon cheddar burgers and 85 lb. of ribeye steak sandwiches to event attendees. The event generated $1,500 for West Central/Area 11 Special Olympics Illinois. CHB Territory Manager Danielle Starr says attending the event during her first week on staff was an excellent introduction to the generosity of the Hereford family. “The partnership with The Butcher Block instantly expanded to a community, which supported one goal: West Central/Area 11 Special Olympics Illinois,” Starr says. “The Hereford community surrounded me as a child and young adult; and now, as a young professional, I can be a part of the community that strives to give back. I am thankful for this experience.” The Butcher Block, owned by Dan and Chris Veihl, conducts CHB cookouts for charity several times a year, including the local Alzheimer’s association. HW During the “Cookout for a Cause” on May 17 at The Butcher Block, Quincy, Ill., $1,500 was donated to the West Central/ Area 11 Special Olympics Illinois. Bill’s great-grandfather, John D. Flournoy, settled in the South Fork Valley (Likely, Calif., area) in 1871. Many of John’s descendants have followed in his footsteps as a cattleman. Formed in 1973, Likely Land & Livestock Co. is a partnership between Bill Flournoy and his brothers — John and David. Their dad, Don, still helps on the ranch, but the three brothers manage the day-to-day operations. Bill manages the 2,500-plus cow herd, John’s focus is hay and grassland management, and David keeps all the equipment running effectively. The brothers, along with other ranch hands, meet at 6 each morning for breakfast at the ranch cookhouse. It’s a time to plan for the day’s activities. The ranch cook also prepares lunch for the crew.

are gentle and nice to manage yet they are active in the pasture and get their job done.” — Bill Flournoy For the last 15 years, the Flournoy family has focused on end-product merit because of its participation in the Harris program. “We’ve seen a lot of improvement in carcass quality,” Flournoy says. “Improving from 50% Choice to now 95% Choice or better.” Because of the family’s commitment to utilizing progressive tools, in 2002 the ranch was named Commercial Cattleman of the Year by the California Beef Cattle Improvement Association. Today the Likely Land & Livestock herd numbers 2,500 cows along with 100 herd bulls. Each year the Flournoy family retains 450 heifers. The operation also puts up about 9,000 tons of hay per year. The cow herd calves in January and February. Likely Land & Livestock

Co. calves are weaned in late fall and preconditioned in its feedlot for 45 days on chopped meadow hay grown on the ranch. Then they are shipped to the Harris Feedlot in Coalinga, Calif. The Flournoys have utilized artificial insemination (AI) in recent years. This has allowed the family to breed replacement heifers to low birth weight bulls.

Hereford results Flournoy says his family is very happy with the first Hereford-sired calf crop that is on the ground. “They look good and show a lot of vigor,” he says.

His crew also likes managing the Hereford bulls. “We really like the Hereford bulls. The bulls are gentle and nice to manage yet they are active in the pasture and get their job done,” Flournoy says. “We also like how they do not try to climb out of the corral when they get by themselves.” This summer 30 Hereford bulls are currently in use at Likely and the plan is to buy another dozen or more this fall. Flournoy says the plan is to eventually have half his bull battery Hereford. “We’re happy, to say the least,” he says about the decision to add more vigor to their herd by utilizing Hereford bulls. HW

The Flournoy family settled here in the South Fork Valley in 1871 — more than 140 years ago. After 15 years of using Angus bulls, the family is utilizing Hereford bulls to add more hybrid vigor in its calf crop as well as improve cow herd reproduction efficiency.

DNA Q&A Answers to some commonly asked questions since AHA has moved DNA testing to GeneSeek.

I

n June the American Hereford Association (AHA) transitioned all DNA testing to GeneSeek Inc., located in Lincoln, Neb. With this move, AHA members have more testing options while the process of requesting DNA kits and collecting samples remains unchanged. The DNA testing process is required to get a female donor dam permitted or a

sire permitted for artificial insemination (AI). Also all Hereford sires born after Jan. 1, 2011, must be DNA genotyped at the official AHA DNA laboratory before their progeny can be registered. Producers can continue to use DNA testing to parentage verify an animal before registering when the sire of the animal is in question or to test for genetic abnormalities.

With the move to GeneSeek, Hereford breeders now have the option to utilize a 50k panel to obtain genomic information to enhance the accuracy of Hereford expected progeny differences (EPDs). The genomic-enhanced (GE)EPDs panel testing will help AHA continue its work of genome discovery in order to continue to find SNP markers that will enhance the accuracy of EPDs.

Q: What DNA products are available? A: 1) AHA basic panel — $30 per head or $20 per head for bulk pricing

Hereford DNA testing fees

To qualify for bulk pricing breeder must order 50 or more kits and all kits must be ordered at the same time.

2) GE-EPD panel (genomic-enhanced expected progeny difference [EPD]) — $85 per head

3) AHA basic plus GE-EPD panel — $100 per head Combination test that includes: basic panel and GE-EPD panel.

4) Horned/polled panel — $48 per head The horned/polled test only tests for the horned/polled gene. Does not identify scur genes.

5) Legacy animal retest — $15 per head This test is for an animal that has previously been tested utilizing microsatellite technology and needs to be retested utilizing SNP. For the first 12 months, legacy animals will receive a 50% discount on a basic panel DNA kits — $15 versus $30. No bulk pricing is available. All other tests for legacy animals are full price.

With the move to GeneSeek Inc. as the official DNA lab for the American Hereford Association (AHA), a new fee schedule and testing options have been announced. 1) AHA basic panel: The panel tests for parentage, tenderness (calpain) and genetic abnormalities — hypotrichosis (HY) and idiopathic epilepsy (IE) and dilutor — $30 per sample/$20 bulk rate of 50 or more. 2) GE-EPD panel: Results will be blended with EPDs — $85 per sample. 3) AHA basic plus GE-EPD panel — $100 per sample. 4) Horned/polled panel (stand-alone test): This test identifies homozygous or heterozygous polled genotypes. It does not identify the scur genes. — $48 per sample. 5) Legacy animal retest: This test is for an animal that has previously been tested utilizing microsatellite technology and needs to be retested utilizing SNP — $15 per head.

Q: What is the basic panel? A: The AHA basic panel allows you to:

1) AI (artificial insemination) permit a sire — This requires parent verification. If the parents were originally tested using microsatellite technology they may need to be redone using SNP technology. This qualifies them for the legacy animal retest pricing, if previously tested.

2) ET (embryo transfer) permit a dam — Only a profile is required on the dam for this permit, if parents are available with a SNP panel then we will test them.

3) Genetic abnormality testing

4) Parentage verification — This is used when parents maybe unknown or when breeders use multiple sire pastures.

5) Tenderness — This test uses the calpain markers developed at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC).

Q: Do I need to have my calves registered prior to ordering the DNA kit? A: No. Animals do not have to be registered, but they must at least be recorded at

AHA as an unregistered animal. This gives them a unique registration number that is used to create a barcode for each kit. The decision to register the animal can be made once the DNA results are available to the breeder.

Q: Why would I need to retest a parent if they have a DNA profile on file? A: Animals with a DNA test result prior to June 16, 2012, will have a microsatellite

DNA profile. With the switch to GeneSeek we will be using SNP-DNA profiles. Therefore it may be necessary to generate a new DNA profile for parents using the SNP panel so that their progeny can be verified back to them. Most animals that have a microsatellite DNA profile already have a hair sample at the lab and it may be possible to generate the SNP-DNA profile from that existing sample. The lab will notify AHA if a sample isn’t usable for generating the new profile. In these cases, a new DNA kit will be requested for the animal and sent to the member. If the parent is not available, it is possible to run a microsatellite DNA profile for the progeny to be able to conduct the parent verification.

Q: What is the GE-EPD test? A: The GE-EPD test evaluates the genetic merit of animals. DNA marker tests

reveal the genotype of an animal for specific DNA markers for a particular trait. AHA will blend marker information with phenotypic information to produce an EPD that will allow breeders and commercial producers to select animals with less risk due to the increase in accuracy. For more information, contact Stacy Sanders or Jack Ward at 816-842-3757.

Q: What is the horned/polled panel? Does it test for abnormalities too? A: The horned/polled test only tests for the horned/polled gene. No abnormalities will be tested for and it does not identify scur genes.

Q: How do I request test kits? In what format do I receive the kits? A: Call AHA customer service at 816-842-3757 to request a DNA test kit. You can

request your forms to be sent to you via mail, e-mail or fax. Please note: by receiving the forms via fax, the barcodes on the forms can be scrambled in the process of faxing and can cause problems at the lab.

Listed here are answers to some commonly asked questions about Hereford DNA testing. For instructions on how to collect and submit samples see Page 102 of the July Hereford World or visit Hereford.org/DNATesting. If you have more questions about Hereford DNA testing, contact the AHA at 816-842-3757.

Q: What qualifies an animal for the legacy animal retest? A: The animal must have a DNA profile on file prior to June 16, 2012. Animals

can be retested to generate a SNP-DNA profile for verifying them as parents of progeny at a discounted rate through June 2013.

Q: Can I DNA profile only? A: You can DNA profile animals for in-herd sire use, donor dam permits and legacy animals with the AHA basic panel.

Q: Which abnormalities will be included in the test? A: Hypotrichosis (Hairlessness) — partial to almost complete lack of hair.

Dilutor — carrier animals when mated with black cattle can produce offspring with a gray, smokey or chocolate hair color.

Idiopathic epilepsy — seizures occurring from birth to several months of age (lethal abnormality).

Q: How do I need to collect my DNA sample to send in? A: Three forms of DNA can be submitted: 1) hair; 2) semen; or 3) blood. Hair is

the preferred method for DNA sampling (See “The process: Hereford testing procedures” for instructions on how to submit hair and semen). For deceased animals, bone can be submitted but there may be an additional charge for bone DNA sampling.

Q: What if I ordered a kit before the transition to GeneSeek and had not sent it to the lab? Can I now send it to GeneSeek?

A: Call AHA customer service and get the address for the new lab and use the same kit. Or if you want to upgrade to one of the new testing options, then contact AHA and request a new kit.

Q: How will I know that an animal has GE-EPDs? A: You can search for them on the AHA website. All animals with GE-EPDs will have the GE-EPD logo on the website. HW

A look at how genomics will affect the cattle industry. by Troy Smith

I

t takes time and observation to evaluate how a new technology will influence beef cattle production at the ranch level. According to a pair of animal scientists making presentations at the 2011 Range Beef Cow Symposium in Mitchell, Neb., that’s the case for genomics — the study of genes and their function in order to understand how they influence differences among living beings. Colorado State University Extension Beef Specialist Jack Whittier and University of Nebraska Geneticist Matt Spangler talked about how information gathered through DNA testing of beef cattle applies to genetic improvement through selection of seedstock. Their take-home message was that information from DNA testing is not a replacement, but an enhancement, for tried and true tools for genetic selection. According to Whittier, samples of an animal’s DNA

are evaluated for SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms called “snips”) or “markers” known to be associated with genes influencing the expression of particular production traits. The association between SNPs

primary companies have the technology to test beef cattle for genetic defects, parentage, coat color, horned/polled traits and numerous performance traits. DNA samples can be evaluated and genetic merit predicted

Information from DNA testing is not a replacement, but an enhancement, for tried and true tools for genetic selection. and phenotypic traits of interest has been established through extensive statistical comparisons of DNA libraries with databases representing populations of animals with known performance. “As new SNP information is discovered,” explained Whittier, “the statistical models are ‘trained’ or ‘validated’ to assure that accurate predictions are valid.” At the time of the symposium, Whittier said, two

for traits such as carcass tenderness, marbling, yield grade, ribeye area and others. With validated tests, predictions can be made regarding an animal’s performance, even when that animal has little or no phenotypic data in the database. (For information about Hereford genomic testing, see “Hereford DNA Q&A” on Page 16.) Whittier reminded the audience of the importance phenotypic data has played in evaluating an animal’s genetic worth as a parent. All available information about an individual and its relatives is combined to create a genetic profile for comparison to other individuals of the same breed.

DNA vs. progeny testing

18

/ August 2012

Expected progeny difference (EPD) values, used for at least 25 years to evaluate an individual’s genetic merit, are based on the actual performance of individual sires and their progeny. While important, Whittier called the collection of progeny data both time-consuming and expensive. “It’s slow. Progeny testing takes three to four years and a bull is at least 5 years old before his first evaluation is available. And progeny testing costs about $25,000 per bull,” Whittier explained, adding that only one in eight to 10 bulls “graduate” from progeny testing.

Whittier said marker-assisted selection, based on sampling and evaluating DNA for SNPs, offers savings of time and resources needed to test large numbers of progeny. And now, genomic information derived from DNA testing for gene markers is being integrated with traditional EPDs, resulting in marker-assisted or genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) for economically important traits. Whittier likened GE-EPDs to the application of more rigorous analysis of nontraditional player statistics in Major League Baseball, as depicted in the film “Moneyball.” “Predictors like markerassisted EPDs, or molecular breeding values for economically relevant traits, may allow cattle producers a better way to identify valuable animals, using ‘player statistics’ coupled with DNA markers,” said Whittier. A fair question to ask is why development of genomic predictions seems to have focused more on heavily recorded traits, such as growth, rather than desirable but “novel” traits like disease susceptibility or measures of efficiency. According to Nebraska’s Matt Spangler, development of genomic tests depends on existing phenotypes used to “train” the markers. “Training is simply determining if there is an association between each marker and the trait of interest, and quantifying that effect. Consequently, the first genomic tests focused on those traits for which vast phenotypic resources exist,” explained Spangler, noting that current U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-funded research projects are focused on the novel traits previously mentioned. Another question producers commonly ask is whether DNA testing really works. However, Spangler said the more appropriate question is, “How well does it work?” The answer, Hereford.org

he says, is related to how much genetic variation for a specific trait is explained by a marker test. A very useful application of genomics has been for identification of genetic defects. Coupled with DNA testing for parentage, this has provided for the identification and removal from the breeding population of animals that carry specific defects. A step beyond that is to apply genomics to selection for more complex traits. Spangler said collection of DNA information, which can be accomplished at a young age, affords an improved prediction of an animal’s genetic potential.

Blending with EPDs But rather than looking at DNA test results as separate and disjoined pieces of information, Spangler sees greater value when genomic information is incorporated in national cattle

“There still is a need to collect and routinely record phenotypic information by seedstock producers, and commercial producers need to realize that EPDs and economic index values are the currency of the realm for beef cattle selection.” — Matt Spangler

evaluation and the calculation of EPDs. The real benefit derived from combining molecular tools and traditional EPDs is improved accuracy of prediction. Markerassisted EPDs, through their increased accuracy, can provide for an increased rate of genetic change through selection. When more information is added to the calculation, an EPD value may go up or down, explained Spangler, adding, “When you genotype animals, the accuracy will always go up.”

Marker-assisted EPDs, through their increased accuracy, can provide for an increased rate of genetic change through selection.

A limitation to current application of marker-assisted selection is that marker panels work best in the populations where training occurs but potentially decrease in predictive power as the target population becomes more genetically distant from the training population. Erosion in accuracy is likely to occur, over successive generations, if panels are not retrained. What this means is that genomic predictions developed for one breed cannot be effectively applied to other breeds. Spangler expects more breed associations to incorporate genomic information into their EPD calculations. And he believes methodology for applying the technology to

crossbred or composite cattle is critically needed. He believes widespread adoption hinges on the rate at which commercial bull buyers recognize the added value of increased EPD accuracy and show their willingness to pay for it. “There still is a need to collect and routinely record phenotypic information by seedstock producers,” stated Spangler, “and commercial producers need to realize that EPDs and economic index values are the currency of the realm for beef cattle selection. Genomic technology only makes these tools stronger; it does not replace them.” HW

We want to complement the BuyHereford program for providing Durham’s with a successful opportunity to market our cattle. We have a producing herd of about 40 females that does not allow our offering a typical production sale. The BuyHereford program provided us with the ability to market our cattle on a national level. For us, the stress level was quite low and we certainly were satisfied and pleased with the result of our Internet sale. The response was good and the expense involved was most appreciated. The program provides marketing support to the breeders, especially the member with smaller herds. — Norman and Jane Durham, Durham Ranch, Stillwater, Oklahoma

Weaning Wisdom Tried-and-true strategies that help ensure healthy, profitable calves at weaning. by Kindra Gordon

W

eaning time brings cattle producers onestep closer to their paycheck for that calf crop — so they know how important it is to ensure calf health. Most producers agree that weaning success isn’t about fancy techniques; it’s simply about doing the basic management strategies right. Nate Frederickson, who raises registered Hereford and Angus cattle near St. Onge, S.D., describes his approach to weaning as a threelegged stool encompassing a proper vaccination program,

appropriate nutrition and low stress cattle handling. “These are pretty standard practices, but they work well. If you don’t have one of the components or legs, that stool will not stand and the weaning program could fail,” he says. Frederickson, who also works as a sales representative for Novartis Animal Health, has had ample opportunity to see the value of vaccine programs. He recommends two rounds of shots — one at preconditioning and the other at or shortly after weaning. Frederickson tells, “Veterinarians differ on opinions whether it’s better to vaccinate at weaning or

14 days later. As long as calves have had preconditioning shots either time works.” Frederickson recommends producers vaccinate with a standard five-way viral vaccine combined with a seven-way, pasturella and H. Somnus. But

he adds, “Operations can differ, so I highly recommend producers work closely with their veterinarian for a tailored weaning vaccination program.” With regard to nutrition for newly weaned calves, Frederickson puts emphasis on a mineral program but notes there can be some flexibility in the feedstuffs selected to fit each producer’s gain goals. “Depending on the gain a producer wants for calves will dictate the nutritional needs — from hay or grass to a complete pellet,” he says. Last but not least, Frederickson always makes sure to keep stress on his newly weaned calves minimal. This includes providing weaned calves a clean pen or large paddock with grass and adequate fences combined with easy access to fresh water and feed. He adds, “A little TLC can go a long way when it comes to weaning.” Frederickson acknowledges that some of these steps take extra effort — and investment — to make sure that weaning goes smoothly, but it adds up to healthy calves that go on to perform and produce a profit. HW

Weaning time is not just about the calf While weaning decisions mostly focus on the calf, Jason Ahola, Colorado State University associate professor of beef production systems, reminds producers that cow body condition score should also be a factor that helps determine the appropriate weaning time. Ahola says, “Often, because we like the look of growing calves so much, the majority of beef cattle producers (53%), decide when to wean their calves primarily based on calf weight or age. Interestingly, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) survey data, only 7% of producers consider cow body condition score as the primary factor to determine weaning time.” He continues, “I’ll be the first to admit it — it’s not very appealing to look at young, small, and lightweight calves, never mind weaning them like that. We all love to see big, heavy calves at weaning time. But, numerous studies have demonstrated that weaning calves early can be an effective tool to help improve reproduction and forage availability by reducing nutrient requirements of the cows.” Ahola explains that a typical beef cow requires about 10 megacalories of energy per day to maintain her body tissues. When she is lactating, the same cow requires approximately three to six additional megacalories per day, depending on how many days she has been lactating. When a calf is weaned earlier than normal, the cow’s overall nutritional requirements are reduced when her lactation stops. Non-lactating cows require about 20-35% fewer nutrients than lactating ones. Ultimately, fewer nutrients required per cow mean more feed to go around for other more appropriate uses.

22

/ August 2012

Among researchers, it is generally agreed that weaning early can offer these advantages: • Cows are able to improve their body condition scores prior to winter feeding. • Reproductive performance can improve (as seen by more cows pregnant during the season and/or more cows pregnant earlier in the season) due to reduced nutritional demand and improved body condition scores. • There will be greater forage availability for cows or other livestock, including reduced demand on pastures. • Calf performance can be improved in drought situations, sometimes including more desirable carcass characteristics.

Early weaning options Typically, beef calves are weaned at about 6 or 7 months of age. However, researchers have reported that calves can be successfully weaned as young as 1.5 to 2 months of age. Ahola explains that calves weaned prior to or during the breeding season (at 2 to 3 months of age) can have immediate effects on reproductive performance in that same year’s breeding season, including changes to conception rate and length of postpartum interval. However, if calves are weaned one to three months earlier than normal, reproductive performance can only be affected in the next year’s breeding season (due to elevated body condition scores at the end of the upcoming winter). Ahola admits early weaning does have its downfalls compared to traditional weaning. For instance, in the short term, income will likely be reduced if calves are sold at a significantly lighter weight. But, he adds, “It should be noted that lighter calves commonly sell for a higher price per pound, and calf prices also tend to be higher in late summer versus fall. And, when viewed over the long term, more future calves will likely be born earlier in the calving season — assuming cows are in better condition and breed back sooner — and will be older and heavier at weaning time in subsequent years.” Early weaning also requires an increased focus on management and calf nutrition and possibly a need for improved animal facilities. But, particularly in drought situations or with young cows, Ahola suggests it may be a management option worth considering. HW

The CMPHBA has come a long way since hosting its first sale in a heated tent.

Central Missouri Breeders to Host 100th Sale by Sara Gugelmeyer

O

n Sept. 15, 2012, the Central Missouri Polled Hereford Breeders’ Association (CMPHBA) will make history. The group will host its 100th sale, making it the only Hereford consignment sale in Missouri, and probably one of few in the U.S., which has hosted 100 sales without skipping a year. Gary Seifert has been at all 99 sales, and he says, God willing, he will be at the 100th as well. “My dad helped form the (Central Missouri Polled Hereford Breeders’) Association in 1950 and organized the first sale in ’53,” Seifert says. “He took me out of school back then, I was just a boy, every year to go to that sale. I am 68 years old and I’ve been there 99 times.” He or his father has consigned cattle in every sale as well, Seifert says. The sale was held annually until 1974, when the organization voted to host two sales per year — one in the spring and one in the fall. The

spring sale is every March and the fall sale is held in September. The association has about 50 members currently, of which about 30 will regularly consign their seedstock to the sale. Seifert says the longevity of the event can be attributed to good people. “We’ve had a lot of good presidents, a lot of good secretaries and sale managers,” he says. “We’ve never let it fall back a year; we’ve kept it going. I know a lot of people are looking forward to it every year. It’s just a good organization, really.” Seifert’s father, Richard, was the first-ever CMPHBA president. It was he, along with Clarence Winkelman of Cedar Grove Farms, Clyde Francis of Serene Acres and Lawrence Renn Jr., who did the majority of the sale organization for the first few years. “There were a lot of other great members, though,” Seifert explains, “but I can’t mention all those.” The facilities and the cattle have been upgraded considerably, Seifert admits.

Miller County Regional Stockyards in Eldon, Mo., has been hosting the CMPHBA sale for the last five years.

24

/ August 2012

“The first sale was Feb. 3, 1953,” he says. “It was held in a heated tent, at the Linn, Mo., fairgrounds. There was no other facility besides the heated tent.” Thirteen consignors brought 28 bulls and 24 females to the first sale. Seifert says, “We’ve definitely went to growthier type of cattle. Back then we had the little shortlegged things. They’ve improved with a lot of frame, growth and milking ability.” Along with improvements in cattle, the sale is held in a nice

facility at the Miller County Regional Stockyards in Eldon, Mo. “In 1970, we moved out of Linn and into the new feeder calf pavilion one mile north of Linn. But for the last five or six years we’ve been at Miller County in Eldon,” Seifert explains. This year the consignors have planned quite an event to celebrate 100 sales. Country music auctioneer Leroy Van Dyke will be putting on a show at 6 p.m., Sept. 14, the night before the sale. Also that evening, buyers can preview the cattle, CMPHBA president Larry Day says. Attendees will have a chance to win door prizes, as well. “Then Saturday we are going to serve a barbeque beef dinner prior to the sale and have some more drawings and silent auction items,” Day explains. “Then we’ve had a Hereford heifer that was graciously donated by Bob and Gretchen Thompson of Glengrove Farms, Rolla, Mo., that we are going to auction with the proceeds going to the juniors (see below). Leroy is going to stick around and auction that off for us as well as a couple other select items that have been donated to us.” Following the Glengrove heifer will be the rest of the consigned Herefords. Seifert says he attributes the success of the sale to the popularity of Hereford cattle and plenty of hard work. He adds, “A lot of young breeders got involved and better quality breeders,” he says. “I think honesty and integrity means a lot in these sales. If people know you, know that you sell reputation cattle year after year, they are looking for your cattle.” HW

Glengrove Farm donates heifer to support National Hereford Queen, Missouri juniors Glengrove Farm, Rolla, Mo., has graciously donated Glengrove Celebration Z1 to support Hereford youth. The proceeds will be split between the National Hereford Queen travel expense fund and the Missouri Junior Hereford Association Scholarship fund. Celebration (registration No. P43275066) is a January 2012 daughter of the twice national champion bull Shock and Awe and an outstanding Bellis-bred cow. She will be auctioned on Sept. 15 at the 100th Anniversary Sale of the Central Missouri Polled Hereford Breeders’ Association (CMPHBA) at the Miller County Auction facility in Eldon. According to Bob Thompson, owner of Glengrove Farm, the heifer is a fitting tribute to commemorate this landmark event. This sale is the oldest continuous consignment sale of its kind in the U.S. CMPHBA members are making a special effort to offer buyers their best to make this sale attractive to all. Consignments will include herd bull prospects and replacement females that will add value to their herds. For more about the sale, contact Larry Day at 660-621-0812. HW Glengrove Celebration Z1

the reported cases,” admits Ensley. “But products containing pyrethroids have been around for quite some time. If they pose a huge risk, I think we should have seen more problems arise in the last five or 10 years.”

What are pyrethroids?

Pyrethroids and Bull Fertility: Cause for Caution, Not Panic by Troy Smith

S

ome producers have read about them, and others have heard veterinarians or animal health suppliers talk about the potentially detrimental effects pyrethroids may have on bull fertility. Producers have been advised to use caution when choosing an insecticide for use near the breeding season. The news left plenty of cattle folk scratching their heads, wondering if their sprays, pourons, ear tags or products used to charge back rubs contained the substances said to damage

26

/ August 2012

bull semen quality. Indeed, many name brand products contain pyrethroid compounds. According to Steve Ensley, a veterinarian and clinical toxicologist at Iowa State University, information about a relationship between pyrethroids and bull fertility has been dispersed “out of an abundance of caution.” He says case reports have suggested pyrethroids as the cause of clinical toxicosis, but available evidence probably doesn’t justify a shunning of pyrethroids. “There’s no denying that pyrethroids had an effect in

To understand what pyrethroids are, producers first ought to know about pyrethrins, which are compounds extracted from the seed coats of chrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethrins are naturally occurring repellents and, in sufficient concentration, are fatal to insects. They have been used as active components in commercial insect control products. However, pyrethrins are easily degraded and lose their insecticidal properties rather quickly. Pyrethroids represent a family of compounds synthesized from pyrethrins, explains Ensley. In simple terms, scientists tweaked the molecular structure of pyrethrins to make the resulting pyrethroids last longer under practical application. Firstgeneration (Type 1) pyrethroids were more persistent but still unstable in sunlight. Type 2 pyrethroids are more resistant to degradation, making them better suited to agricultural applications. On product labels, specific pyrethroids are commonly listed by their respective trade names and might not be readily recognizable. Livestock producers may have seen the trade name “permethrin” listed as an active component of products for controlling external parasites, as permethrin has been a commonly used pyrethroid.

How do they affect bull fertility? Case reports linking pyrethroids to reduced bull fertility suggest these compounds may inhibit production of an enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone — a hormone necessary to the function of multiple accessory sex glands. University of Missouri veterinarian Dietrich Volkmann has cited evidence suggesting this problem with pyrethhroids may cause bulls to produce lower volumes of semen. Sperm cells may be abnormal and the “freezeability” of sperm collected from artificial insemination (AI) sires may be compromised. Volkmann has noted certain cases where sperm morphology

and motility were significantly decreased after breeding bulls were exposed to a pyrethroid compound. The effects were observed within a few days after first exposure but were not permanent. Bulls returned to normalcy within two to four weeks after exposure ceased. Volkmann has stated that all evidence is case-based, meaning there has been no controlled, repeated research regarding the effects pyrethroids might have on bull fertility. The rarity of reported cases, relative to the extent products containing pyrethroids have been used, raises questions? Did all affected bulls receive correct dosages of pyrethroid insecticides? Did other management or environmental factors contribute to the apparent toxicosis? Might some individual animals be more susceptible while others are more resistant to the effects? Further research seems warranted.

Usage tips Some veterinarians and Extension personnel are advising producers to use insect control products containing pyrethroids judiciously and to avoid “doubling up.” In other words, choose a spray, a pour-on or ear tags, but don’t use multiple pyrethroid products at the same time. Some advisors recommend avoidance of pyrethroid products for bulls at the start of breeding season or during the weeks prior. “Giving bulls everything — parasite treatments and vaccinations — at turn-out time really isn’t advisable. Ideally, all of that is done 30 days before breeding season. That might be a good idea when using these products,” Ensley says. He notes that research offers conflicting results regarding effects alternative compounds may have on bull fertility. While some suggest no adverse consequences, other controlled studies have demonstrated that ivermectin-based compounds and organophosphate insecticides can affect semen volume, sperm morphology and motility, and a bull’s ability to pass a breeding soundness evaluation. Ensley also thinks it’s important to remember that bulls typically produce far more sperm than is really needed to get the job done. So, in a practical sense, even if normal sperm production is reduced by 20%, it’s not going to have a big effect. “That’s my take on it,” Ensley says. “I still think it’s most effective to use the different kinds of insecticides in rotation. There’s cause for caution, but there’s just not enough evidence to rule out pyrethroids entirely. Not yet.” HW

Consider LRP to Manage Volatile Cattle Prices by Kindra Gordon

E

dgemont, S.D., rancher Doug Bachand has found a way to lock in higher prices for his calves when he sells them in the fall. For the past two years, Bachand has utilized Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) insurance — a program available for feeder cattle and fed cattle that allows producers to limit downside price risk while still being able to take advantage of higher prices. In Bachand’s case, he typically purchases his LRP contract when the feeder market is up in the summertime. He sets the contract to mature in October, when he traditionally sells his steer calves. In October, when he sells his calves, if the current live feeder cattle index is lower than the contract price he locked in — as it has been the last two years — Bachand receives a payment

for the price difference minus the premium. In 2010 and 2011, the LRP insurance allowed him to net an average of $23/head more than the October feeder index price with both sets of steer calves. “It’s worked well to get those higher prices,” says Bachand, and he indicates he’ll watch the LRP contracts again this summer.

Managing risk Melissa Stearns of Edgemont, S.D., is a crop insurance agent licensed to offer LRP to cattle producers in South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. She has worked with Bachand and others in the region for the past few years. Stearns explains that LRP is very similar to a put option on the futures market, with one distinct advantage: LRP insurance allows a producer to insure as few head of cattle as he or she wants to —

whereas feeder cattle put option contracts must be purchased in 50,000 lb. increments. Stearns anticipates that as price volatility continues, interest in LRP coverage will continue to grow. “I’m seeing more bankers recommend to cattle owners that they need to do something to protect themselves from the price risk in the market. The LRP insurance program is a relatively easy way to do that without the use of the futures market,” she says. LRP insurance is presently available for fed cattle (1,000 to 1,400 lb.), feeder cattle (steers and heifers up to 900 lb.), lambs and swine. All livestock must be owned by the individual or entity insuring the livestock at the time the insurance is purchased.

How LRP works If a producer chooses to purchase LRP insurance on a group of

feeder calves, an expected ending value is estimated at the time the insurance is purchased. This expected value is the current futures price of the cattle for the month in which they will be sold. The producer then chooses which level of coverage he desires. This level can be between 70% to 100% of the expected ending value, explains Stearns. The premium is then calculated based upon the level of coverage chosen. Once the insurance period is over, the coverage price chosen by the producer at the beginning of the contract is compared to the actual ending value. This value is a seven-day rolling national average for 700 to 849 lb. medium or medium/large No. 1 framed steers. If the actual ending value is larger than the coverage price, then no indemnity will be paid to the producer. The loss to the producer is the premium paid. If the actual ending value is less than the coverage price, then an indemnity is paid, which is simply the coverage price minus the actual ending value. If the indemnity is collected, the gain from the LRP insurance is the indemnity minus the premium paid. Stearns notes that LRP does have a notable cost. “The premiums are there,” she says, but adds, “It’s a product worth looking at especially when the cattle market has shown such volatility these past few years.” And, presently, the premium is subsidized 13% by the federal government because it is trying to create more awareness — and participation — in this pilot program, states Stearns. She clarifies that LRP is slightly different from most crop insurance products because the premium is due at the time of signing the LRP application. She also explains for producers that the “target weight” for livestock needs only to be an estimate at the time of purchasing the insurance and there are no negative impacts if the actual ending weight is higher or lower. The target weight will be the weight the loss check is based from. For instance, if a target weight of 580 lb. is estimated, but the actual weight is 600 lb., the insurance loss would be paid on 580 lb. if the cash price is lower than the insurance price that was locked in. HW

More LRP details Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) insurance policies are available through the crop insurance agent system from agents specifically trained to sell LRP. LRP can be purchased once the markets close for the day and until the market

32

/ August 2012

opens the following day and Saturday morning until 9 a.m. (Central Time). There is a maximum limit of 4,000 head of fed cattle and 2,000 feeders that an owner can insure per year. If the livestock are sold during the

contract, insurance may be transferred to the new owner. If livestock is sold prior to 30 days before the expiration of the contract and no transfer of insurance is completed, the insurance is null and void and premium must be paid.

The LRP program is made available through a federal mandate that aims to level the playing field and make an equivalent number of insurance products available for livestock owners as are offered to grain producers. HW Hereford.org
