Hereford Breeders Respond to HSUS

When you hear the words factory farming, what does that mean to you? If you were to define traditional beef cattle management practices, would any of those practices cause stress or cruelty to an animal? For those of us who have grown up on beef cattle farms and ranches, we acknowledge that some of our practices inevitably induce stress, but none of the things we do are perceived by us as cruel or unusual treatment to livestock. After all, Dad and Granddad taught us that this was the way it is supposed to be done, but to others there are far different perceptions. Political pressure built from “full-courtpress” lobbying, massive promotion and campaign contributions to legislative activists, and media blitzes is influencing a growing number of public sympathizers as it relates to humane handling. This movement is coming from a deep-pocketed organization that can and does influence the opinions of governmentthought leaders. That’s been the recipe of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). During the last decade, HSUS, the world’s largest animal advocacy group with reported assets of $160 million, has influenced agriculture legislation across the country. It is not just about dog and cat shelters as HSUS television commercials would have you believe. The organization has influenced legislators

/ May/June 2011

by convincing them that certain common animal handling and management practices are inhumane. The ultimate goal of HSUS is to eliminate or at least reduce the consumption of meat and other animalbased foods and products. Wayne Pacelle, HSUS CEO, openly announces his intentions from his HSUS blog. “The HSUS promotes eating with conscience and embracing the three Rs — reducing the consumption of meat and other animalbased foods; refining the diet by avoiding products from the worst production systems (e.g., switching to cage-free eggs); and replacing meat and other animal-based foods in the diet with plant-based foods.” Pacelle goes on to write, “The HSUS is a big tent organization, and we support people who want to switch to more humanely raised animal products, reduce the amount of meat in their diets, or try a vegetarian lifestyle — but the reduction of meat consumption is one of the best things we can do for the planet given how unsustainable the current levels of factory farming are.” The HSUS’s underlying mission is where the battle will be fought. The perfect example of this is the dramatic negative impact upon the equine industry that the U.S. horse slaughter ban has had. Our challenge as beef producers and Hereford breeders is to define,

scientifically justify and articulate our common management practices in an effort to get ahead of the HSUS machine. A sound defense of our management practices with creative promotion in an aggressive, carefully crafted and understandable way may, at a minimum, cause those that are not in the know to question restrictive regulations that could force us out of business. This is not an appealing or interesting conversation, but it is a fact of life that threatens the very core of our business. Since 2002 HSUS has taken credit for major legislative and corporate initiatives including: • 2002 – Florida phases out metal gestation crates for swine. • 2007 – Oregon bans gestation crates for breeding pigs. • 2007 – Horse slaughter plants in Texas and Illinois forced to close. • 2008 – Colorado phases out gestation crates and veal crates. • 2008 – California passes the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, defining pen space requirements for veal calves, laying hens and swine gestation crates. • 2009 – Proposed federal ban on horse slaughter and the sale of horse meat. • 2009 – California bans the practice of tail docking dairy cattle. continued on page 6... www.hereford.org

• 2009 – Wendy’s agrees to start purchasing a modest but more meaningful portion of eggs from cage-free producers. • 2009 – HSUS pressures McDonald’s to go to cage-free eggs, mirroring the McDonald’s European practices. • 2010 – McDonald’s board opposes cage-free eggs for the U.S. despite pressure. • 2010 – Ohio Farm Bureau compromises with Ohioans for Humane Farms in order to remove extreme animal handling legislation from the ballot. Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board is formed.

Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board Some say Ohio agrarians wisely negotiated a truce with HSUS in 2010. In order to get harmful legislation off the ballots and cool down the HSUS promotion machine, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, along with the Ohio Department of Ag, adopted the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board (OLCSB) in order to have a place at the table to define humane standards for livestock management. I have asked several Hereford breeders their opinions of the various proposed guidelines for purposes of stimulating further dialog with the American Hereford Association (AHA) membership. Question 1— How concerned are you about the animal welfare/handling issue, and do you think there is a real threat to our business? AHA President John Woolfolk, Columbia, Tenn.: In my opinion, there are several organizations and groups that would like nothing better than to see animal agriculture disappear from the American countryside. These organizations are extremely well funded and are very creative in developing advertising campaigns that reach the hearts and pocketbooks of the American people. In order to keep the animal industry viable, farmers and ranchers will have to take a hard look at how we are viewed by the general public in regard to the welfare of the animals that we raise.

6

/ May/June 2011

John Dudley, Comanche, Texas: I am very concerned about the animal welfare/handling issue. There is a difference between the humane treatment and care of animals and humanizing animals. This is a slippery slope that can seriously impact our ability to raise food and fiber for this nation and the world beyond. To a great degree, much of the animal rights movement is a front for radical action and thought that is aimed at putting animal production agriculture out of business. It also targets private ownership of land and private enterprise. Montie Soules, Skiatook, Okla.: This movement is not going away, and we must be proactive. HSUS has a strong voice and is very influential with the public. The purebred industry is a portion of the beef industry that is seen in the public at various stock show events around the country. Because of our industry visibility, the Hereford breed could develop and communicate a standard of care that would boost the image of our industry and our product including Certified Hereford Beef (CHB). Defining a standard could even improve the demand for CHB because of a proactive approach to an animal welfare message. We must communicate our concern and care for our cattle and couple that message with the Hereford breed’s unique trait of docile disposition. Question 2 — Do you agree with the OLCSB recommendation that newborn calves must be offered colostrum, or colostrum replacement, within the first 24 hours of their lives? Woolfolk: Maybe I am missing something here, but I thought that we were already doing that. I thought that even the dairies allowed calves to nurse their mothers for the first day before moving them to milk replacer from a bottle. Any type of supplemental colostrum would certainly be impractical with normal beef production.

Dudley: The recommendation indicates an obvious lack of understanding regarding the range environment that most cattle are raised in. This standard is unrealistic for most operations that allow cattle to be cattle and calve outside in the natural elements with the instinct and expectation to take care of their own calves. Soules: Assuring that a newborn receives colostrum the first 24 hours is really something that many operators may not be able to achieve. I think the operator has the knowledge to keep the baby calves alive with or without colostrum. It is to the operator’s benefit to have a live, healthy calf, but it is the cow’s responsibility to take care of that part. There are times at our ranch when we have to step in and assist, and we do, but I’m not sure it should be a standard. Question 3 — What is your opinion of the following statement: Pain management must be used for purposes of dehorning and castration based on the age and weight of the animal, the methods used, environmental condition, available facilities and human and animal safety. The practice of horn removal or disbudding prior to eruption of the horn growth is permissible without pain management. Woolfolk: Pain management is the area that is of most concern to me as it relates to livestock management practices. I foresee a growing opinion from the nonfarm sector that believes practices such as dehorning and castration should not be done without anesthesia. Currently, requiring anesthesia will also require a veterinarian perform these procedures and that brings about other concerns. We have a shortage of food animal vets in many areas of the country today. Adding this service to their current workload would only magnify the difficulty that farmers and ranchers have in obtaining veterinary continued on page 8...

assistance in a timely manner. Even though it is of little concern to those pushing so hard for reformed animal welfare, it would be a direct increase in cost of meat production. Dudley: Most producers make every effort to accomplish dehorning and castration as early as possible. Better for the animal and better for the bottom line. However, there are certain proposed standards that simply are not feasible in the real world.

Soules: Proper dehorning of cattle is a battle area that is going to be difficult to win unless we commit to managing horns at an earlier age. We know the stress this puts animals through as they get older. There will likely come a time where an animal will have to be treated for pain management once it reaches a certain age.

Should the AHA get involved? It’s worth mentioning that the handful of prescribed standards discussed were written by thoughtful beef

industry producers and agriculture professionals in the state of Ohio, yet we do not agree with every aspect of the proposed standards. In fact some are viewed as impractical. These concerns highlight the challenges that are ahead. According to Dudley, it may be time we engage in the process as a Hereford breed: “It is vitally and critically important that animal agriculture producers are involved in the dialogue and rule-making process from the start. This is not going away, and we must confront head on these issues that are being raised. It really becomes our responsibility to educate the public and have them understand that proper care and handling of livestock has always been a core belief of those engaged in animal husbandry. Amen to that! Evaluating Top 20 Sires by Registration It was just over a year ago that the American Hereford Association (AHA) Board of Directors, along with other industry leaders, re-evaluated the strategic plan. Prior to the strategic plan session, a survey was done by Drovers-Vance Publishing in order to find out the demand for Hereford genetics within the commercial industry and to pinpoint the traits that are important to these commercial breeders. These surveys are vital to the development of the plan because they ask the questions regarding the future. The most important economically relevant traits (ERT) to commercial cattlemen were calving ease (CE) and disposition. In addition, this survey showed that the demand for Hereford cattle within the commercial industry is growing. This increased demand has been obvious over the past couple of years, as the reported bull sales have been tremendous.

With this extra demand comes an extra burden to the purebred industry. How is the demand for Hereford genetics going to be filled? Will it be through expansion of existing breeders or will it be through membership growth? At the end of the day, it will be both, but, more importantly, the growth will need to be done with commercial cattlemen in mind. Each year I like to look at the bulls used by registration. In the table below, you will see the list of top sires by registration for the 2010 calf crop. As you look through this list, I think it is important to focus on the set of sires as a group. First, you will find eight of these bulls are listed in the major AI stud directories. Next, you will note that the average of these bulls will find them in the top 35% of the breed for every trait but fat, and it is better than breed average. After a closer look, they are in the top 10% for marbling, weaning weight (WW) and baldie maternal index (BMI) and in the top 2% for Certified Hereford Beef index (CHB$). Finally, you will notice that 19 of these sires are proven sires — sires that have at least .60 WW accuracy. As the interest grows for Hereford genetics, breeders need to continue to put pressure on calving ease, and when you do this, mature weight will stay in check. It has been highly publicized this spring that breed dynamics have changed over the course of the past several years. British cattle,

through their chase to add growth in order to catch continental breeds, have gotten mature weight too big. I am not going to get in the argument of which size of cow is the most efficient because that will vary between environments. However, we must continue to understand the value of our breed and what the commercial breeder is asking us to provide. Let’s provide easy-doing, problemfree cattle that can be used by commercial cattlemen at any level including using Hereford bulls in heifer programs. It is an exciting time for the Hereford breed, and the challenge is in your hands. Find out what your customers need and produce that type of cattle. I would also like to remind everyone that the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) meetings will be in early June in Bozeman, Mont. I would like to encourage you to take the opportunity to attend the meetings. You can find more information on the BIF Web site, www.beefimprovement.org, or in Hereford eNews. Finally, I just want to remind everyone to consider purchasing a share in Loewen Foundation 34X, registration number 43074983. All of the proceeds of the sale of this bull will be donated to the Hereford Research Foundation to support all AHA breed improvement projects. You can find more information concerning the sale of this bull at Hereford.org, or you can contact me at 816-842-3757 or jward@hereford.org. HW www.hereford.org

Retiring Board Reflections It seems like just yesterday that Kara Eschbach walked my way after giving her retiring speech and handed me her burgundy jacket. Although the jacket she passed down to me didn’t even come close to fitting, the symbol of responsibility was still there. Now here I am closing in on the time when I will give my retiring address, and it got me thinking of what advice I would give to those who are considering running for the board and, eventually, those who will get the retirees’ jackets. To those thinking about running for the board, I have one basic piece of advice: take the decision to run seriously. If you get on, you will become a leader of a huge association with a lot of juniors looking to you to make important decisions. However, running for the board is a great experience no matter what. If you are a candidate, I will tell you that it is very important to work as much as you can. Helping at the JNHE is when the delegates and juniors will see if you have what it takes to be on the board. Also, the connections you make and the juniors you meet while working will help you greatly once you are elected. If you are thinking about running for the board, be prepared to work hard but also know that you will make some of your best friends while running. To future board members, I would like to share some lessons I learned

during my three years on the board that I hope will help you. First of all, be prepared to work, and work hard. The worst thing board members can do is to forget or neglect the responsibility they have to the board. Understand that you will have to give up things that you might rather do to fulfill a responsibility, but that is much better than not fulfilling it. Do not let the occasional failure discourage you from trying to get something else done. Listen to your advisors; they are a great source of wisdom and will definitely be there for you whenever you need them. Most importantly do not take these things for granted if elected to the board. Do not take your family for granted; you will need their help a lot in order to fulfill your responsibilities. Do not take your responsibility for granted; the delegates who voted for you voted for an individual who they thought could lead the association and make it better. Do not let them down. And lastly, do not take your fellow board members for granted; it is important to work together to get things done, and more than likely, they will become like family in the end. I hope this is helpful to those juniors out there thinking about running for the board. If you need more advice, just let me know, and then tell me to stop if I start giving you too much advice. — Jake Metch, NJHA leadership chair

The Mead Program Sale

Being on the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) board has been a rewarding experience. I can’t believe how fast these past three years have flown by, to think I will be handing off my jacket this summer in Kansas City. I encourage all junior members to run for this great board. Representing the Hereford breed and the juniors has been an honor and a privilege. Not only have I gained leadership experience, but I have also gained industry knowledge and increased my knowledge of this breed. These past three years have allowed me to make connections with Hereford breeders all over the country that I will have in the future. Being on the board has also allowed me to get to know many juniors who will be the future leaders of the Hereford breed. My advice to junior members is to get involved in this great breed that we know, whether it is running for the NJHA board, getting involved in your state association or getting involved with contests at the Junior National Hereford Expo. — Justin Bacon, NJHA fundraising chair

Berg Serves as CHB Ambassador, NHW Director What a great time of year! Spring has arrived, and we are all thinking about “moooving” outdoors for our activities. It’s an even better time to start thinking about our favorite brand of beef, Certified Hereford Beef (CHB®). Just think about that fantastic cut of meat grilling to perfection on the grill. Makes your mouth water just thinking about it, doesn’t it?

The National Hereford Women (NHW) has an outstanding ambassador within this great organization to promote something that is close to all of our hearts and pocketbooks for that matter — CHB. As a CHB ambassador, Mary Ann Berg has been to countless grocery stores, trade shows and any other venue that will allow her to tell everyone about CHB. Being an ambassador is a wonderful way to tell the world about the outstanding characteristics of the beef we are all producing in our backyards. Mary Ann and her husband, Jerry, operate a Hereford cow-calf herd on their hilly farm located near Dalton, Ohio. More than three decades have passed since the Bergs first developed their herd of Hereford cattle with 4-H projects in mind for their growing family. The couple is as passionate and excited today about the breed as they were some 30 years ago. Their four children — Lisa, Michael, Jen and Mary Beth — and their families are very supportive. They

help on the farm when needed and sometimes are able to enjoy workrelated trips. In 2010 Jerry and Mary Ann were inducted into the Buckeye Hereford Association’s Hall of Merit. In addition to operating a Hereford cow-calf herd and crop farming, the Bergs also operate a farm tax accounting business. Mary Ann earned a bachelor’s degree in vocational home economics education from Bluffton University and The Ohio State University. She taught home economics prior to starting a family. She continues to substitute teach, serve on a church council and chair the Christian education committee at their church. One of her favorite activities is spending time with her 10 grandchildren and their families. Her membership in Ohio Hereford Women (OHW) has evolved into her serving on the NHW board. The OHW is an organization of members continued on page 32...

dedicated to promoting the Hereford breed and supporting the Hereford youth. She has been a member for more than 20 years. Mary Ann is proud to be a founding board member of the NHW. According to Mary Ann, serving on the strategic planning committee and realizing the formation of NHW will always be a highlight of her time spent on the board. In 2007 the American Hereford Association and the former American Hereford Women and National Organization of Poll-ettes joined in an effort to establish a volunteer position

within the CHB program to assist in promoting CHB. After an application and interview process, Anna Rhodus, Greenwood, Mo., and Mary Ann were selected to join the CHB team as ambassadors. They have been involved in food shows, grocery demonstrations and grand opening events. The Fresh Market grocery, a Southern-based franchise, is opening new stores yearly in the East. The market offers a wide selection of high-quality products, including Hereford beef. Serving samples of ribeye steak, promoting sales, and educating the public on the benefits and safety

of beef consumption is part of an ambassador’s job description at these store openings. Mary Ann has represented CHB on a panel of judges to evaluate the entries in the grill-off contest at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE). She encourages youth to participate in this contest. It is educational, competitive and, most of all, fun for participants and judges alike. The grill-off encourages a cooperative spirit among fellow junior members and brings out creativity of the individual as well. The contest is designed to promote the Hereford breed and CHB. All entries must use CHB provided for their recipes. Entries are evaluated in the areas of showmanship, recipe and knowledge. Persons interested in learning more about the grill-off contest should contact Ann Guess at 806-237-4821. As you can tell, the NHW is lucky to have Mary Ann, this outstanding lady, representing not only NHW but CHB also. You too can be a part of this great team of women all pulling for the same goals. Please contact Paula Acheson at gpacheson@tctelco.net to inquire about your NHW membership today! HW

Kick Up Your Heels in Kansas City

America’s heartland will host the Junior National Hereford Expo July 9-16. by Kindra Gordon

G

rab your cowboy boots, your hat and of course your best Hereford T-shirt, and plan to head to Kansas City as the city known for barbecue and jazz hosts the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE). The event will take place July 9-16 with the theme “Kickin’ It In Kansas.” More than 1,200 head of Hereford cattle will be showcased during the event by 700 Hereford youth and their families. It will be a full week of cattle shows, camaraderie and leadership activities — and Kansas City offers the perfect backdrop for a little summer fun as well.

Keep cool iation

July can be sizzling hot, but Kansas City offers ample options to keep cool starting with the Schlitterbahn Kansas City Waterpark. The park is Kansas City’s only river tubing adventure. It had its first full season of operation in 2010 and will feature six brand new attractions in 2011 – a Boogie Bahn surf ride, three water slides, a record-breaking rapids river and a whitewater tube chute. The park also features an uphill water coaster, the world’s longest “tidal wave” river, beaches and a giant hot tub. Another “cool” place to be is the Worlds of Fun/Oceans of Fun theme park located off the east loop of I-435 in Kansas City. New for

The view from atop Quality Hill, located on the west side of downtown Kansas City includes (l to r): the American Hereford Association bull, American Royal Complex, Kemper Arena and the Kansas City Live Stock Exchange Building in the former stockyards in the West Bottoms.

Other favorites As the home of the international headquarters for Hallmark, Kansas City’s Crown Center complex showcases the history of the world’s largest greeting card company amidst an array of shopping, dining and entertainment venues, making it a destination with something for the whole family to enjoy. The Hallmark Visitors Center celebrates the Hallmark story in a display of 14 remarkable exhibits – there’s a timeline exhibit that reflects various eras and trends in America, a collection of imaginative Christmas trees, as well as the chance to visit with Hallmark designers and see the process used to create and produce greeting cards. There’s even a free card-making session where children can explore and create using scrap material from Hallmark’s manufacturing processes. www.hereford.org

Near Crown Center is another adventure land – Union Station. Built in 1914, it is the second-largest train station in the nation, after New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. Today, it houses an assortment of unique shops, movie theaters, restaurants and Science City interpretive center, which features more than 50 hands-on science activities. Kids can search for fossils at a dig site, solve a mystery in the crime lab and track a tornado — for starters. Visitors can also climb aboard Union Station’s permanent local history exhibit, The KC Rail Experience. It tells the story of how railroads shaped a city, a region and a nation. Visitors will see historic rail cars and artifacts and hear stories from ghosts of Kansas City’s railroading past. Other Union Station highlights include experiencing a massive movie in the Vic & Helen Regnier Extreme ScreenTheater, the region’s only 3D projection system with a screen five stories tall. Or, journey through space and discover the wonders of the universe inside the Gottlieb Planetarium. Last, but not least, be sure to enjoy some Kansas City ’cue. That shouldn’t be hard to do, as Kansas City has more barbecue restaurants per capita than any other city. Wellknown joints include Gates and Arthur Bryant’s. HW

2011, Snoopy – everyone’s favorite beagle – will take center stage inside a new theme park at Worlds of Fun. Planet Snoopy will feature more than 20 rides, shows and attractions devoted to pint-sized play. There will even be daily meet-and-greet opportunities with Charlie Brown, Lucy and the rest of the PEANUTS gang. How cool is that? And, if you’d like to be transported to the Arctic, make sure you visit the Kansas City Zoo. It recently added the Polar Bear Passage to its exhibit expansion. It is the largest polar bear exhibit between Chicago and the West Coast and includes a 140,000 gallon 65 degree pool. The Arctic playground is home to Nikita: a 4-year-old, 750 lb. polar bear. The $11 million project is the latest in a long line of improvements at the 200-acre Kansas City Zoo, which is the 10th largest in America. Other recent additions include Tropics, a new indoor rainforest exhibit, and the African Sky Safari, which is an aerial tram ride that provides a breathtaking view of the zoo’s 17-acre savannah.

Kansas City’s Cattle Connections Located in the “heart of America” where the Kansas and Missouri Rivers meet, Kansas City enjoys a central location that made it an historic gathering point for pioneers heading West. Once the railroad was established, the Kansas City Stockyards helped the city grow as it became a hub where western ranchers and eastern buyers met to trade cattle. Interestingly, one of Kansas City’s historic districts — The Plaza — is a popular shopping area known for its many ornate fountains. Many started as simple drinking troughs for livestock in the late 1800s and have become sculpted pieces of art through the years. Today, Kansas City is still a hub for the cattle industry; it hosts the American Royal livestock exposition each fall and is home to the office of the American Hereford Association. HW

An individual category has been added to the Great American CHB Grill-off. States can now enter as many team and individual competitors as they wish. This year the promotional poster contest will only be offered to peewee and junior competitors. A new contest in 2011 is the creative design contest, which will display the creative talent of NJHA intermediate and senior members. This contest enables junior members to use computer technology to design materials that promote the Hereford breed and NJHA. All entries will be placed on display throughout the show and even better, selected entries may be used in the Hereford World or The Advantage newsletter. All ads must be postmarked and to the AHA office by June 1 as all judging will be done prior to the JNHE. The 2011 creative design contest entry theme is: Imagine you work for the AHA and are having an NJHA membership drive. Participants need to design an 8×10 inch advertisement to promote becoming a junior member. They should design a new/fresh logo for the NJHA and an ad that will be sent to livestock publications around the country to increase NJHA membership. Family Business Coborn’s Inc. supermarkets provide a wholesome, valuable marketplace for Certified Hereford Beef. by Sara Gugelmeyer

F

ifty million lb. of beef is a lot. On average that adds up to more than 70,000 beef carcasses. And Coborn’s Inc., a fourth-generation family- and employee-owned supermarket chain in the upper Midwest, has easily sold more than 50 million lb. of Certified Hereford Beef (CHB®).

Humble beginnings Coborn’s, like CHB LLC, sprouted from humble beginnings and

46

/ May/June 2011

has grown into an innovative, multidimensional food provider. In 1921 Chester Coborn started selling produce in a small market in Sauk Rapids, Minn. Dedication allowed him to expand and sell dry goods and other merchandise, and in 1936 he added meat sales. The growth continued, and in 1972 Coborn’s Inc. was the first grocery store in Minnesota to use scanners at checkout counters. Leading the way again, Coborn’s

employees recognized a market for discount retailers, and Coborn’s opened the first of many Cash Wise Foods stores in 1979. Convenience stores followed in 1986. Now, Coborn’s Inc., still owned by the family and company employees, has 38 supermarkets selling CHB — 10 of which are discount format Cash Wise stores and the remainder are conventional Coborn’s supermarkets located in Minnesota, South Dakota and www.hereford.org

North Dakota. Most have fullservice meat, seafood and deli counters, and pharmacies.

Choosing CHB In 1998 the CHB program was relatively new on the block, yet Mike Richter, also new to Coborn’s then, took a chance on it. Richter, director of meat, deli and seafood for Coborn’s, carefully researched several beef programs before choosing CHB. “I really felt that beef was the backbone to a solid meat department,” Richter says. “So with that in mind, I searched for a program that would set us apart from the competition.” Brad Ellefson, now a CHB account manager, was a big part of the sale. Ellefson knew owner Chris Coborn from childhood and bent his ear about the pros of Hereford beef. Richter had been talking with representatives from many branded beef programs, including CHB and Certified Angus Beef. “Brad had gotten my curiosity up enough about the CHB program that Chris (Coborn), Bob (Thueringer, Coborn’s chief operating officer) and I toured several ranches in South Dakota, one being Vern Rausch’s,” Richter explains. “We became more acclimated with the various attributes of CHB cattle and the care they were provided, the feed and consistency of the animal, and its characteristics. After that, I had more conversations with other packers, producers and programs, but we decided that Hereford fit the Coborn’s family tradition of being family-owned and working with local family farms in the Midwest. We worked out an exclusivity agreement, and it was a good solid fit for us.”

Promises kept Richter and Coborn’s customers have not been disappointed. “The Hereford cattle have given us great value,” Richter says. “It surprised us with the quality eating experience of great tasting beef. Over time, in essence, CHB has delivered a www.hereford.org

promise to our customers. Our promise is simple; we guarantee your satisfaction or your money back. To this day, I can’t remember ever getting complaints about our beef quality. Our product does what it says it’s going to do, provide consistent quality time after time and at a great value.” Customers who walk in to Coborn’s stores have a variety of Hereford beef to choose from. Coborn’s meat markets offer everything from ground beef to premade hamburger patties, called wow-burgers, as well as steaks, roasts and other versatile cuts. Also, at the deli counter buyers can choose from several types of Hereford deli meats, which, Richter says, “…have performed outstanding and would cut against any top national brand in the country.” Richter adds that the beauty of the CHB program, for them, is they don’t need to offer several different programs to please the customer. “We don’t have a need to have a two-branded program to fit the needs of our consumers. The certified Hereford program provides our customers with a great restaurant steak that you would expect to get at any whitetablecloth restaurant.”

Spreading the word Customer education is key to the supermarket business, and Coborn’s emphasizes that across the board. “I think our meat quality speaks for itself, but we worked at trying to educate the consumer on what Certified Hereford Beef was,” Richter says. “I don’t know that they get it completely to this day, but they do understand that we’re the preferred choice when it comes to great grilling solutions, and we deliver on that promise and expectation, time after time.” Last year, Coborn’s ramped up its advertising campaign as competitors Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club opened new locations in the St. Cloud, Minn., market. Coborn’s Vice President of Advertising Sue Wendt says Coborn’s developed a

strategy to educate customers about many of its products including CHB, as well as the chicken and pork Coborn’s offers. “We featured local ranchers and talked about our attributes versus Wal-Mart’s,” she explains. “We stressed our products being all-natural, cut fresh in-store, no solutions added. We listed sodium levels and what the ingredients were for the meats and actually took pictures of our package versus their package with noticeable difference between the two. “We wanted to stress the local family farmers who raise the beef we sell in our stores,” Wendt continues. “We did a multimedia continued on page 48...

interviews with the ranchers that actually supply beef to our stores and had little clips of their quotes in radio ads and video clips on social media sites like YouTube and Facebook. The campaign used print, radio, social media and posters in the store.” Although it’s difficult to numerically measure the benefits of these types of image campaigns, Wendt and Richter believe the campaigns helped. “Going into that heavy competitive period, we were able to curb our sales losses by telling our story,” Wendt says. Richter adds, “When we have competitors come in, we retain our market share with very little setback, if any. It’s a result of our proactive advertising but also our products speaking for themselves. Our customers are confident in what we provide; they can go and tour a new competitor, but they always come back.” Coborn’s has a history rich in honesty and customer service,

one that has grown a mutually beneficial relationship with CHB LLC. Coborn’s employs more than 6,000 people in the Midwest and has been recognized for its outstanding commitment to the communities it serves. The company donates more than $2 million and plenty of volunteer hours toward improving local communities. Coborn’s “golden rule” is to “Treat all with dignity and respect.” It seems that’s a motto which has served the Coborn family and Coborn’s employees well for nearly a century. Richter says the company looks forward to continuing to grow by adding a couple new stores each year. “Our goal is to grow in the right markets and keep our stores in more rural-type Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota communities.” The CHB LLC staff looks forward to aiding and supporting Coborn’s growth and providing another 50 million lb. of quality, tasty Hereford beef.
