It was the summer after my Sophomore year of high school when my father announced that he had enrolled me in a program at Hargrave Military Academy located in Chatham, Virginia. My report card arrived in the mail the prior week and it was clear that my grades were not consistent. The impact of my parent's recent divorce was reflected in my unsteady grades. I 've always loved science. I have for almost 3 years. It 's my favorite subject, and i 'll even research science outside of school. I own a telescope and i could go out whenever i want and set it up. But for awhile before 5th grade, i didn 't love science. Science was actually uninteresting to me, but in april of 2015, this changed.

I was in Gate, we had a back room in Sylvan, my elementary school. There was a smart board, chalkboard, and a table with short chairs that kindergartners would have used. My class used to always mess around with these, trying to get the shorter chairs instead of the normal ones. We didn 't do anything serious, always some mind puzzles and other things like that. The day it was due, we all had the option to present to the class, i didn 't want to, but everyone else did. Everyone else presented, and after class the Teacher asked me:

"Jack, why didn 't you present?"

I couldn't get myself out of this situation, so i told her:

"I didn 't finish it."

"Well, you were given two weeks to do the project, and it 's not even done? i 'm gonna have you present tomorrow, and i want you to get it done."

I went home that day a little nervous, did she call my parents? Do they know i didn 't do the project? If so, are they gonna be mad? The more i thought about it, the more nervous i became. All the worst possible situations went through my head. When i came home, my dad was already

there, as i stepped inside, my dad was waiting for me at the dinner table. He asked how my day was, but he seemed a little suspicious, he might already know what happened.

I managed to avoid talking to people for the rest of the day, but as the day was coming to an end, my mom walked up to me and said:

In all my life, I've never had a commitment that required so much of me as track and field, both physically and mentally. Towards the end of my high school career, track and field for me meant having to push through a difficult physical condition known as tarsal coalition, a condition that causes inflammation in my feet. With help from my coaches, I had to learn to endure past physical limitation and strengthen my faith in my abilities. My Experience At The Robotics Club

In high school my parents and counselors kept asking me "What do you want to do with your life after high school and college? What do you want to do for a living?" I wasn't even sure of the question, let alone the answer. I explored many options; nursing, Navy, and engineering. It took time and persistence to figure out the direction I wanted to take. I joined the robotics club that eventually guided me into the decision that I am following. By the end of my senior year I realized that my dreams and goals may be similar to others, but it is up to me on how I choose to fulfill these wishes. The six seniors in my robotics club, Team 1038, stood up in from of our parents, family, and friends at our end of year banquet. It is obvious that through our involvement in robotics, we had similar interests and goals. I was certainly not the smartest, most popular; nor was I an outcast. We were teammates, and proud to say 'geeks' that found our niche. I was just one of the kids searching for guidance to make a crucial decision on the direction that I would take for the rest of my life. How does it feel to be adopted? Has life been altered as a result of being adopted? These questions have never fazed my view of being adopted. Awareness of being adopted began as far back as I can recall and has never been a taboo family topic. Adoption didn't affect my life in any sort of way as a child. As I matured, the realization of the impact being adopted has had on my life has evolved. This insight created a new level of gratitude for my family and my life. Although memories don't exist for me prior to my adoption as I was only nine months old–there are recordings of this consequential event. These videos were recorded by a family friend; however, at the time of the recordings mymother and grandmother had only just met our soon–to–be lifelong friends on the plane to China. In the video, the moment when my mother meets me for the first time is when I consider my life starting. My mother was calm through the chaotic event. The video shows my mom taking me from the caretaker's arms and holding me. The one part of the video that surprises me is that I begin to cry the moment I'm in her arms; almost as if I were a newborn being held for the first time. Depending on the person, there are many different reactions to a baby crying – some panic, while others are composed and collected. I received a harsh truth: poverty is inevitable

Growing up, I never had the warm pleasures of bedtime stories; instead, I would hear about the unimaginable impoverishment my parents faced in their childhood. The immediate reality of poverty obscured their investment in their brighter futures; both were forced both to sell lottery tickets on the streets or trade vegetables for portions of meat: just to help sustain their families. Looking back at those nights, I can only be grateful. As one of the first in my family to attend college, I am piloting a new future, one where I hope to lift not only my family out of their struggles but also the community that has always supported me and global communities today.

My life is propelled from my education. While the daily facades of school walls try their best to dilute the distractions of reality, in my community, I see families sorting through clothing donation boxes and teenagers hanging around gas stations instead of school. My brain constantly races, not necessarily stressfully, but it's like my thoughts never rest. I have been told for years that I overthink things. And by things, I mean every meaningful or unnecessary thing, even down to which flavor Gatorade I should buy before practice. I usually end up picking the light blue kind after a big debate. Making the decision to pick one word that describes me is tough, but the one word that describes me perfectly is "over–thinker," although I am currently overthinking my word choice. I am often deemed worried, stressed, or anxious; although I do not think I necessarily always am just because my mind races. I do stress, however, over the fact that I am an over–thinker. Overthinking is most probably the one thing I overthink most. It exhausts my mind and is sometimes a major distraction from things that deserve my focus. Days, weeks, months, and even years go by and some things never fail to haunt me. Decisions I made and events in the past still come into my mind when I try to sleep at night. Then I ask myself why those thoughts are even happening, and why I cannot shut them out. My thoughts have given me determination for success, but have caused me to fight a battle on my way there.
