As I am entering my senior year, college has been the biggest thing on my mind. As I have been looking at colleges and trying to find the right one for me I am looking for a few different things; How is God incorporated in the learning and how good the programs I am interested in are. By applying to Bethel my goals are to receive a valuable college education that will help better my chances of getting a job, and also to grow in my faith.

For most young adults, college is the next stage of their life after graduating from high school. People want to go to college for many different reasons; they would be a first generation student, their dream job requires them to receive higher education, or simply want to get a good paying job in which a college degree can really help with that. Today, about one–third of student loans are unsubsidized. For unsubsidized loans, interest costs accrue to student borrowers as soon as their loan funds are disbursed. (Fossey, p.11). This means that for a certain time, the government stepped in and paid for the accumulating increases in the interest of student loans while the student was still taking classes. Nevertheless, a majority of college students take out the other type of loan in which the government does not pay for the accumulating increase, the student actually does and it begins the minute they take out the loan. This is what causes the pile of student loans that graduated student find themselves under because they owe so much more than they took out, and ultimately are swallowed whole because of the amount that they owe. Being the first in my family to go to college has been quite the roller coaster for me. Not everyone gets accepted to a well known university that easily and many of my relatives were actually surprised to see me actually make it this far and surpass my older cousins. My parents and I knew a lot of money was going to start going towards my next stage of education to become even more successful than they have ever been. Mom isn't the luckiest in having a decent stable job and my dad doesn't have the best paying job, so the income is only enough for the bills, groceries and gas for the cars. College has always been a place I wanted to go to ever since I was in middle school. I first found out about the importance and the value of college my six grade year of middle school. We were always referred to as the class of 2023 which back then seemed unrealistic, but now it is very much a reality. Not only was it important to go to college but it was essential to go and complete all four years. Being exposed to the idea of college at such a young age allowed me to become passionate about it and value higher education. I want to go to college because of the examples my siblings have been able to set for me. Growing up, my parents always had higher expectations for all my siblings and I . Knowing that my siblings were able to achieve and exceed my parents expectations makes me want to work just as hard as them. Education has been around for many centuries, but recently in the past 150 to 200 years literacy has changed. College comes after receiving the basic educational skills in middle school and high school. It has been debated continuously whether continuing education to college is quite necessary, or if it is just a complete waste of time. This may be the case for other students as well. As shown in the essay, "Plan B: Skip College", not everyone is meant to go to college.
Jacques Steinberg states in his essay, "Plan B: Skip College", that students that rate below than 80% in their high school class are not likely to receive a bachelor's degree, or even an associate degree. (106) If this seems to be the case, there are other options for students. Vocational school is one option, where training is provided to perform a numeral amount of jobs in a short amount of time. Although it seems like it is more expensive, vocational schools are a shorter amount of time than a four–year school. This provides many students with an option of become successful even when reaching higher education is not involved. Steinberg goes on to say that college degrees are simply not necessary for many jobs, and that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics that over the next decade only seven jobs will require a bachelor's degree. (107) Those who believe attending college is the only way to become successful are not entirely right. There are many people today who did not attend college and still managed to become successful.
