Your Local Buzz On 10th February 1943 two German Dornier 217 bombers from ll/KG40 Bomber unit in Holland on a nuisance raid followed the Great Western Railway line running west from London to Reading. At 4:35pm one of the bombers veered off towards South Reading while the other continued to follow the railway line to Newbury.

The day Newbury was bombed in 1943 At 4:43pm the Dornier 217 bomber arrived at Newbury and dropped eight high-explosive bombs, there was no time for a warning siren. The church was totally destroyed by the bombs, leaving only the altar standing, but was rebuilt after the war. The Senior Council School (Eastfield), St.Bartholomew's Almshouses, St.John's Church and Southampton Terrace were also destroyed and another 265 dwellings were damaged, many were later demolished. The local civil defence commanders had to use the Police and Home Guard to keep back the crowds while there was an organised search for survivors. 15 people were killed and a further 41 people who were injured, which 25 were seriously hurt.

Some people in Cheap Street were blown off their feet by the blast, with wood flying past them from the nearby explosions. In contrast, the Reading raid fell across the town centre, straddling what is now the site of the Oracle shopping centre and moving north to the Town Hall. There was greater loss of life with forty-one people killed in Reading, despite an air raid warning. Thirty-five of them were dining in the People’s Pantry, a Governmentsponsored restaurant behind the Market Place. The other casualties, including two children, were taking shelter as best they could. Both bomber crews also became victims of war, their Dornier 217 bombers were brought down as they flew back South towards Germany.

Eyewitnesses, which at the time were children at St Batholomew School said that they had only left school about 20 minutes before and remembered seeing the planes flying in above as they were walking home, and then the bombs being dropped. 15 people who died were 3 pupils and two of their teachers who had stayed behind to finish off some work.

Thatcham in Domesday Thatcham at the time of the Domesday Survey in 1086 was a thriving community. Domesday records Thatcham being the centre of a Hundred; a Hundred being an administrative area and including Ulvritone, Midgham, Shaw, Donnington, Crookham and several other surrounding settlements. At this time Thatcham is valued at £34, much more than any surrounding settlement and is recorded with having two mills and two priests. It is not known which mills these were, Ham Mill, Chamberhouse Mill or Colthrop Mill, if any. The church at this time would have served not just Thatcham but a wider area. The population has been estimated to be 250 people, a large settlement for the time and larger than any surrounding settlement. Thatcham continued to grow when in c.1100 Thatcham gained a market and soon after was allowed to hold a two-day fair. In 1125, King Henry I granted the manor of Thatcham to his new foundation of Reading Abbey. Then in c.1141 the church was rebuilt in stone. Research & Development Funding Workshop at West Berkshire Council, Market Street, Newbury RG14 5LD on Friday 2 March 2018 from 9:15am to 12:30pm. Newbury based United Konsultants has teamed up with West Berkshire Council to offer a FREE workshop for local businesses. Grants of up to 70% are available for commercial research and development, separately from Research & Development (R&D) tax credits or other

tax allowances. Nevertheless many proposals fail because applicants don’t understand what is needed for the application. This workshop will equip you to present your proposal in the best light. So, if you, or someone you know has a technically innovative idea (whether it’s a new type of children’s shoe or cutting edge cryptography for banks) the government could fund the technical development of your idea. Grants are allocated in open competitions and assessed to rigorous and transparent standards.

Simnel cake The name 'simnel' probably comes from the ancient Roman 'simila', meaning 'fine flour' (as does 'semolina'). Simple, everyday cakes of 'simnel bread' have been known in England at least since the 13th Century, and are always described as being boiled as well as baked. We don't know quite what they tasted like, but we do know that, around the time of Queen Elizabeth I, fancy simnel cakes came to be associated with springtime. In most modern versions marzipan or almond paste is used as a filling for the cake with a layer laid in the middle of the mix before the cake is cooked, and it is also used as decoration on the top. Conventionally eleven, or occasionally twelve, marzipan balls are used to decorate the cake, with a story that the balls represent the twelve apostles, minus Judas. However, this style of decoration, together with its story, did not become the norm until the 1970s, and the older, Victorian tradition of decorating the cakes with preserved fruits and flowers was the dominant form in recipes throughout the twentieth century.

Hot Cross Buns The ancient Greeks may have marked cakes with a cross. One theory is that the Hot Cross Bun originates from St Albans, where Brother Thomas Rocliffe, a 14th Century monk at St Albans Abbey, developed a similar recipe called an 'Alban Bun' and distributed the bun to the local poor on Good Friday, starting in 1361.

Celebratin Chocolate eggs The first chocolate Easter eggs were made in Europe in the early 19th Century with France and Germany taking the lead. A type of eating chocolate had been invented a few years earlier but it could not be successfully moulded. Some early eggs were solid while the production of the first hollow chocolate eggs must have been rather painstaking as the moulds were lined with paste chocolate one at a time! John Cadbury made his first 'French eating Chocolate' in 1842 but it was not until 1875 that the first Cadbury Easter Eggs were made. Progress in the chocolate Easter egg market was very slow until a method was found of making the chocolate flow into the moulds. The modern chocolate Easter egg with its smoothness, shape and flavour owes its progression to the two greatest developments in the history of chocolate - the invention of a press for separating cocoa butter from the cocoa bean by the Dutch inventor Van Houten in 1828 and the introduction of a pure cocoa by Cadbury Brothers in 1866. The Cadbury process made large quantities of cocoa butter available and this was the secret of making moulded chocolate or indeed, any fine eating chocolate.

The earliest Cadbury chocolate eggs were made of 'dark' chocolate with a plain smooth surface and were filled with dragees. The earliest 'decorated eggs' were plain shells enhanced by chocolate piping and marzipan flowers.

Easter Sunday, also called Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian observance celebrating the resurrection of Christ.

Why Is it Called Easter? No one knows for sure where the English name Easter comes from. The most common explanation is that it is derived from the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre. This theory was first introduced in the late-seventhcentury by Bede ("The Venerable"), a historian from Anglo-Saxon England. In most other languages, the name is

Easter Worldwide Many Christians worldwide celebrate Easter with special church services, music, candlelight, flowers and the ringing of church bells. Easter processions are held in some countries such as the Philippines and Spain. Many Christians view Easter as the greatest feast of the Church year. It is a day of joy and celebration to commemorate that Jesus Christ is risen, according to Christian belief. Many towns and villages in Italy have sacred dramas about the episodes of the Easter story â&#x20AC;&#x201C; these are held in the piazzas on Easter Day. Pastries called corona di nove are baked in the form of a crown. Other traditional foods include capretto (lamb) and agnello (kid/goat). Easter in Poland is celebrated with family meals that include ham, sausages, salads, babka (a Polish cake) and mazurka, or sweet cakes filled with nuts, fruit and honey.

The Easter Bunny The Easter Bunny is a folkloric figure and symbol of Easter, depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs. Originating among German Lutherans, the 'Easter Hare' originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behaviour at the start of the season of Eastertide. Legend has it that the Easter Bunny lays, decorates and hides eggs as they are also a symbol of new life. It doesn't do all the work alone though. In Switzerland, Easter eggs are delivered by a cuckoo, and by a fox in parts of Germany.

Although Easter maintains great religious significance, many children in countries such as Australia, Canada, the United States, think of it as a time to get new spring clothes, to decorate eggs and to participate in Easter egg hunts where eggs are hidden by the Easter Bunny. Some children receive Easter baskets full of candy, snacks, and presents around this time of the year. 15

Back pain can keep you up at night, it prevents you from enjoying a good night sleep and saps your day’s energy. But what causes it and how can we avoid it? Mel Harrison

Back Pain The main cause of back pain in bed is poor posture, either from how a person sits at work or how they sleep at night. Between the vertebrae in the spine are intervertebral discs, which rehydrate at night (which is why we are taller in the morning, and part of the reason that the elderly lose height as they get older). Poor posture can prevent the discs rehydrating. Poor posture can put the muscles into awkward positions that can cause irritation over a prolonged period of time, resulting in aches or pains.

Prevention of back pain in bed

Desk Neck Do you get neck ache, back ache and stiffness, which you put down to bad posture? You may have Upper Cross Syndrome (UCS) which means there is a muscle imbalance between the muscles of the neck, shoulder, upper back and chest. UCS is usually associated with desk workers as they tend to sit slouched for long periods throughout the day. As we tire, our head moves forward towards the computer screen. Scarily, for every 2 inches that our head protracts forward, approximately 20lbs of weight is added through our body! So, why does this cause pain? As the head moves forwards and our shoulders hunch, the muscles in our chest and the ones we use to shrug our shoulder become short and tight, while the muscles at the front of our neck and the ones in our upper back become longer and weaker.

In order to prevent back pain in bed, taking care of your posture is essential. A great start is to sleep on your right hand side, with knees bent up slightly. Laying on the right hand side is good for blood flow, as you have the smaller and lighter left lung resting on the heart in this position, maximising blood flow. Ensure that the gap in between the shoulder, neck and head is filled with pillow, so that the spine and neck remain in good alignment. Imagine how your neck sits vertically in line with the rest of the spine when you are sitting and standing; when you are laying on your side, you want to maintain that. Pillow depth is key here, and firmness or softness is personal preference. When it comes to picking the right mattress, it is important to get the correct support for your spine. A mattress that is too hard can put too much pressure on the areas where you feel discomfort, whereas a mattress that is too soft will not provide support for the areas that need it, allowing the spine to spend long periods in poor and unhealthy positions. Most people can’t go wrong with a memory foam-type mattress, as this will provide support where support is needed, and allow for adjustment to the body where that is also required.

Having this muscle imbalance for long periods of time can lead to the dreaded “hunchback.” Other signs and symptoms of UCS are: Increased spinal curvatures, winged shoulder blades, headaches, shoulder instability, nerve pain, rotator cuff problems and even osteoarthritis in the long term

We spend about a third of our lives in bed so if we live until 75 we'll have been asleep for 25 years! We all know that a good night's sleep is important but how much sleep do we really need and why do we do it?

March is National Bed Month The question of why we sleep is actually quite mysterious. In simple terms it is a daily extended bout of rest where we lay down with our eyes closed. But there is more to sleep than meets the eye.

The perfect sleep environment

During this time, our bodies replenish energy stores and make vital repairs, while our minds organize and store the memories from day before. The amount of sleep we need depends on our age, sex, health and other factors, and our sleep cycles change as we grow older.

Dark - try using blackout blinds or an eye mask.

Each sleep cycle lasts around 90 minutes, and in order to feel fully rested and refreshed when we wake up, we must experience at least four stages. A full night’s sleep will include five or six cycles, while a disturbed, restless night consists of fewer.

Comfortable temperature (16-18C). Fresh air circulating but no draughts.

A large bed - Buy the largest you can accommodate. A quality mattress - try out lots and buy the best you can afford. Ban technology - The blue light emitted by screens is hazardous to good quality sleep. Quiet - you can buy soft earplugs if noise is a problem though some people sleep better with white noise in the background.

“I know Harry is smart and he tries so hard. I just don’t get it.” His mother, Charlotte said. Sarah, Clinical Director at The Key Clinic explained “A child may be perfectly smart, but unable to access that intelligence, as something is literally blocking the way. It’s our job to figure out where those blockages are and then to remove them.”

Harry felt deflated as he looked at his exam marks. He always tried his hardest to sit still in class and listen, but could not help getting distracted. He would try to focus his eyes when reading, but the words would jump.

Daily neurodevelopmental movements were carried out with Harry, over a couple of months, in order to get rid of these early reflexes once and for all. His mother was thrilled with the results “On returning to school, Harry gained an average of 20% increase in his exam results across the board – we could not believe it! “

Regular hearing tests had never flagged a problem, but the more advanced test Harry took at The Key Clinic showed Harry actually had hypersensitive hearing, making it virtually impossible for him to block out background noises. Nor could he hear every part of a word clearly. No wonder he was so easily distracted! Harry carried out a 10 day course of Auditory Integration Training at the clinic, listening to specially modulated music through headphones. A final hearing test showed his hearing had normalised and the hypersensitivity was gone. His mother said the changes were quickly noticeable “I did not tell his teacher the work we had been doing at The Key Clinic, but she said today that he is paying much better attention in class and not asking for things to repeated so often.”

Further physical tests revealed Harry also had some immaturities in his nervous system, infant reflexes which should have gone by the time he turned one, were still locked in place. These were making many tasks extremely difficult. This is why Harry’s eyes struggled to read without skipping over words, why he would fidget, why catching a ball or getting dressed was such a challenge and why his handwriting, despite his best efforts, was always messy.

Harry’s parents were becoming increasingly worried about him, watching his self confidence evaporate. Frustrated and sad, he was beginning to believe he must be stupid.

Experts who examined in detail the social habits of wine drinkers found their lifestyles really can be generalised according to their preferred wine colour.

Red or White? Those who drink red wine are also more likely to have a degree, be married and drink more frequently than those who have a preference for white or rose. But white wine drinkers are home-lovers who enjoy a holiday in the

UK and are content with their position on the career ladder. Outside of the workplace, red wine drinkers are most likely to be happily married, with 52 per cent having walked down the aisle and 86 per cent say their relationship is a happy one. White wine drinkers are also more likely than other wine drinkers to be happily single, with 85 per cent saying they are not looking for a relationship.

When it comes to style, 59 per cent of red wine drinkers think they are stylish; with 88 per cent taking pride in their appearance. White wine fans are similar with 87 per cent taking care of their looks, and 56 per cent describing themselves as stylish.

As a result of their travel, with red wine drinkers visiting an average of 10 countries, 76 per cent consider themselves to be 'cultured'. But white

Serves 6 Takes 10 minutes to make, 4 hours to cook The fennel and marsala in this slow-cooked lamb recipe add wonderful sweet and aniseed notes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; perfect for a special feast.

ingredients 2.5kg shoulder of British spring lamb 400ml fresh chicken stock 100ml dry white wine 3 fennel bulbs, thickly sliced

Ingredients

2 onions, cut into wedges

225g/8oz plain chocolate, broken into pieces 2 tbsp golden syrup 50g/2oz butter 75g/3oz cornflakes 36 mini chocolate eggs

2 tsp fennel seeds 200ml marsala (or madeira)

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 160Â°C/fan 140Â°C/gas 3. Season the lamb well and put in a large roasting tin with 150ml of the stock and the white wine.

LET'S Get GoinG 1. Line a 12-hole fairy cake tin with paper cases. 2. Melt the chocolate, golden syrup and butter in a bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water, (do not let the base of the bowl touch the water). Stir the mixture until smooth. 3. Remove the bowl from the heat and gently stir in the cornflakes until all of the cereal is coated in the chocolate. 4. Divide the mixture between the paper cases and press 3 chocolate eggs into the centre of each nest. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour, or until completely set.

2. Roast for 2 hours, then add the fennel and onions to the roasting tin and sprinkle over the fennel seeds, adding another splash of stock if it looks dry. Cook for a further 1.5 hours until tender. Remove the lamb to a warmed platter, remove the vegetables from the tin with a slotted spoon and arrange around the joint. 4. Strain the meat juices from the tin (discard the fat) into a small pan. Add the remaining stock and the marsala, and season. Bring to a simmer, then reduce to a flavoursome gravy. Once the lamb has rested, serve it along with the vegetables and gravy.

LET'S Get GoinG 1. Pour the milk, double cream and chopped chocolate into a pan. Bring gently to the boil, whisking until smooth. Serve in individual cups or mugs topped with cream, mini marshmallows and a little grated chocolate.

UK Fundraisers Prepare to Par-tea in aid of Dementia UK UK-wide tea parties will help to raise funds for families facing dementia Icing sugar is flying off the supermarket shelves and the kettle is officially on! It can only mean that people are gearing up for one thing: Dementia UK’s annual ‘Time for a Cuppa’ campaign. From 1st - 8th March 2018, fundraisers up and down the country will be channelling their inner baker and leaving no teacup unturned as they raise money for Dementia UK’s specialist dementia Admiral Nurses. Admiral Nurses provide the specialist dementia support that families need. When things get challenging or difficult, Admiral Nurses work alongside families affected by dementia, giving them one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions, helping families face dementia with more confidence and less fear.

Admiral Nurses have had a positive impact on people like Alison, whose long-term partner Philip has been living with young onset dementia since his early 60’s. Alison said: “It’s so important that I have my Admiral Nurse, Rob, there for me as Philip’s health deteriorates. I trust his opinion implicitly and he understands what I am dealing with on a day-to-day basis. He even supports my initiative to train Jess, a loveable Labrador, as a therapy dog for Philip. Ultimately Rob is an absolutely fantastic listener and I only wish I had found him sooner”. Funds raised from this year’s baking will help to grow the number of Admiral Nurse services in the UK, helping more families face dementia. Drinking history Britain, always a little suspicious of continental trends, had yet to become the nation of tea drinkers that it is today. Since 1600, the British East India Company had a monopoly on importing goods from outside Europe, and it is likely that sailors on these ships brought tea home as gifts. But the first dated reference to tea in this country is from an advert in a London newspaper, Mercurius Politicus, from September 1658. Catherine of Braganza - she made tea fashionable in Britain. It announced that 'China Drink, called by the Chinese, Tcha, by other Nations Tay alias Tee' was on sale at a coffee house in Sweeting's Rents in the City. The first coffee house had been established in London in 1652, and the terms of this advert suggest that tea was still somewhat unfamiliar to most readers, so it is fair to assume that the drink was still something of a curiosity.

Tea becomes popular It was the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza (pictured) that would prove to be a turning point in the history of tea in Britain. She was a Portuguese princess and a tea addict. It was her love of the drink that established tea as a fashionable beverage first at court, and then among the wealthy classes. Capitalizing on this, the East India Company began to import tea into Britain, its first order being placed in 1664 - for 100lbs of China tea to be shipped from Java.

In 1851, when virtually all tea in Britain had come from China, annual consumption per head was less than 2lbs. Bt 1901, fuelled by cheaper imports from India and Sri Lanka (then called Ceylon), another British colony, this had rocketed to over 6lbs per head.

A way of life Tea had become firmly established as part of the British way of life. This was officially recognised during the First World War, when the government took over the importation of tea to Britain in order to ensure that this essential moraleboosting beverage continued to be available at an affordable price. The

government took control again during the Second World War, and tea was rationed from 1940 until 1952. 1952 also saw the re-establishment of the London Tea Auction, a regular auction that had been taking place since 1706. The auction was at the centre of the world's tea industry but improved worldwide communications and the growth of auctions in tea producing nations meant that it gradually declined in importance during the latter half of the twentieth century. Most of the tea consumed outside East Asia is produced on large plantations in the hilly regions of India and Sri Lanka, and is destined to be sold to large businesses. Opposite this largescale industrial production are many small 'gardens,' sometimes minuscule plantations, that produce highly soughtafter teas prized by gourmets. These teas are both rare and expensive, and can be compared to some of the most expensive wines in this respect.

The tea bag In 1907, American tea merchant Thomas Sullivan began distributing samples of his tea in small bags of Chinese silk with a drawstring. Consumers noticed they could simply leave the tea in the bag and reuse it with fresh tea. However,

the potential of this distribution and packaging method would not be fully realised until later on. In 1953 (after rationing ended), Tetley launched the tea bag to the UK and it was an immediate success. The 'pyramid tea bag' (or sachet) introduced by Lipton and PG Tips/ Scottish Blend in 1996, attempts to address one of the connoisseurs' arguments against paper tea bags by way of its three-dimensional tetrahedron shape, which allows more room for tea leaves to expand while steeping.

Step three: Consider if remortgaging is right for you

Let’s start with step one: Getting your paperwork in order. It may sound like we’re teaching you to suck eggs, but ensuring you keep up-to-date records and accounts is vitally important - self-employed workers still need to prove income to any mortgage lender you apply to. Our top tip is to provide more information than you think necessary, for example: • • •

Two to three years’ accounts prepared by a chartered or certified accountant, The average of your last two years’ net profit or A track record of regular work.

Accounts should be up-to-date and in order before you apply – otherwise the application will be delayed or declined. Step two: Understand your own figures Knowing your numbers and being able to talk the lender through them is equally as important as providing the paperwork. If you have a dip in your income at a certain point, you will need to be able to clarify what happened and why. By pin-pointing and explaining any fluctuations, you will seem more credible to the lender and therefore, increase your chances of getting your mortgage application approved. If you don’t have two years’ accounts, don’t panic. Some mortgage lenders will still consider your application, especially

If you already have a mortgage and want to re-mortgage to save money or move home, your existing lender may be able to help. If they have a history with you, they will be more likely to help than a lender who doesn’t know you. Are you a Director of a limited company? If so, the same rules apply. Some mortgage lenders will consider retained profits when assessing an application. In some situations this can mean company directors find it more difficult to get a mortgage than their employees. The key is to not assume it’s impossible to get a mortgage if you’re self-employed – it’s not. You just need a lender that understands the world of the self-employed. Good luck! eship Week March 5th - 9th Are you taking your GCSEs or A levels this year? Have you decided what to do afterwards? Many schools champion university or further education colleges but have you considered an apprenticeship? During the week employers and apprentices from across England will come together to celebrate the success of apprenticeships whilst encouraging even more people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career. An apprenticeship is a chance to earn and learn. It allows you to mix working full-time and learning on the job with gaining a qualification. Anyone over 16 can be an apprentice. Courses last at least a year, and are available in a huge range of industries – there are apprenticeships in everything from accountancy to social media. It's not just small companies who offer them; many of the big players such as Google, IBM, Barclays and Nestle offer excellent apprenticeships with good long-term prospects. In terms of learning styles, apprenticeships are best-suited to those people who want to get into the workplace straight away, or those who

prefer a hands-on approach to learning. Some people (some teachers even) worry that an apprenticeship might limit a more able student's options. This isn't the case at all, if anything it opens them up. Thanks to the in-depth industry experience apprenticeships provide, many apprentices progress further and faster in their chosen fields. There are also higher-level apprenticeships and some people choose to move into further education at a later stage, either at a conventional university or through a body like the Open University. Spending time in workplace as part of your apprenticeship means that you naturally develop important ‘soft skills’, such as communication and team work. These skills are transferrable whatever path your career ultimately takes.

One major benefit of an apprenticeship is that you won't have a student loan to pay off, and on top of this you are earning a salary and building a network of contacts. About 70% of apprentices are offered a permanent position at the end of their apprenticeship, and 90% remain in employment. To decide whether or not an apprenticeship is right in your case you need to do your research. Think about what your career ambitions are and look at potential pathways. Talk to employers at careers fairs and ask what they are looking for, and talk to people who have done an apprenticeship.
