Five Habits of Happy People

We can train our minds to be positive just like we can train our bodies to be in shape. Here’s how. by Sara Debbie Gutfreund

W

hen we think that happiness is a result of reaching certain milestones we make happiness elusive. Every time we reach a goal, we automatically move onto the next goalpost, and the success that we imagined would bring us so much joy ends up leaving us anxious that we won’t be able to continue to succeed. We need to cultivate happiness while we are in the middle of our journeys, working towards our goals. While we are still single, unemployed, struggling to reach our goals, that is the time to create happiness from the inside out. Based on his compelling research done largely through counselling stressed out Harvard students, Dr. Shawn Achor, the author of The Happiness Advantage, writes that we need to stop equating happiness with success while simultaneously recognizing that happiness is a work ethic. We can train our minds to be positive just like we can train our bodies to be in shape. Dr. Achor presents five suggestions in his 21 Day Happiness Challenge: write down three new things you are grateful for each day, for two minutes a day describe in writing one positive experience you had over the past 24

hours, exercise for 10 minutes a day, meditate for two minutes, and write a quick email thanking or praising someone. In addition to these practical tips, there are some general habits of happy people that we can emulate. 1. They have a “why.” Happy people are clear about what they believe and how their lives reflect those beliefs. They feel like everything they do is meaningful and has a purpose. Their “why” gets them through the details and obstacles that drain us of energy because we aren’t clear what our core values are. 2. They surround themselves with happy people. Studies show that we pick up the moods and habits of the five people we spend the most time with, even if we don’t want to. Happy people tend to seek out other positive people. They will naturally gravitate to optimistic peers and find ways to interact with people who uplift and inspire them. 3. They love to learn. Happy people are curious. They love to learn about new ideas and explore. They find other people fascinating because they

20 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

know that behind every face there is a whole life story that they don’t yet know. And they are constantly asking questions about the world around them and striving to increase both their knowledge and their wisdom. 4. They are grateful. Happy people appreciate the little things in life. They seldom complain because they are able to find joy in what they have. They feel like they have exactly what they need, and they frequently express their gratitude, both to others and to their Creator. 5. They find a way. Happy people don’t give up easily when they want something. They will keep looking, climbing and searching until they find a way in. And while they are striving, they stay far away from both blame and excuses since neither one helps them achieve the results they are working towards. But even happy people need to work hard to maintain their happiness, like Dr. Achor teaches. Happiness, like so much else in life, comes from committed training and solid habits. But it is not a destination; it is a state of mind that we can all cultivate before we even begin.

The Nazi’s Table

A mother leaves Prague in a cattle car; her son returns as a Sabbath-observant, US ambassador. by Robert Sussman

N

orman Eisen met Barack Obama as law school classmates at Harvard University, where they became friends, remaining in touch even after their school days ended. When Obama eventually won the US Presidency, he appointed Eisen, in 2009, to serve as his Special Counsel for Ethics and Government Reform. Only a couple of years later, in 2011, the president tapped Eisen to be the US ambassador to the Czechs. It was no coincidence that Obama chose Eisen to be ambassador in Prague of all places: “The president thought it would be a remarkable thing for the son of a Czechoslovak Holocaust survivor to return and represent the US… No one from my immediate family had returned since

my mother fled Communism in 1949, and the symbolism of [returning there] was just too unique an opportunity to pass up.” In 1944, Frieda – along with her parents, siblings, and other family members – was sent to Auschwitz. Although she and two siblings miraculously survived, their parents and other relatives weren’t as fortunate. On his first day as ambassador, following all of the formal greetings and arrival ceremonies, Eisen sat alone in the library of his new home reflecting on the events of the day. The head of the ambassador’s household, Miroslav Cernik, came into the room and informed the ambassador that there was something Cernik wanted to show him. Cernik led Eisen to a small, ornate table and

30 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

asked Eisen to look underneath the table. The ambassador, who thought it a rather unusual request, complied nonetheless, and got down on his hands and knees, crawling under the table. Nothing could have prepared Eisen for what he found there: a sticker with the clearly discernable image of an eagle and a swastika, the formal symbol of the Nazi party, emblazoned upon it, thus marking the table as former Nazi property. Cernik explained that he had not wanted Eisen to make the upsetting discovery for himself by chance. Eisen, who had envisioned carrying out the many responsibilities of his office, was unprepared for such a thing and described seeing the sticker as “a punch in the gut”, hitting him on an emotional, as well as a physical, level. In an ironic twist, Eisen would

later use that very table during his tenure as ambassador as the stand for his Chanukah menorah.

On his arrival at the Petschek Villa, Eisen had the home returned to its Jewish roots and made suitable

the fact that her son had returned to the country of her birth as the representative of the most powerful nation on earth. Frieda was fond of

The Nazis deported us in cattle cars and my son flew back on Air Force One.

The Nazis were not the original owners of that table or that house. The US ambassador’s residence in Prague, named Petschek Villa, was originally built by a wealthy Jewish industrialist by the name of Otto Petschek in the late 1920s. Petschek, who made his money from coal mine holdings as well as banking, was one of the wealthiest men in Czechoslovakia, before his untimely death in 1934. With Germany’s designs for Czechoslovakia clear and the threat of an invasion on the horizon, Petschek’s family fled the country in 1938. The property was subsequently seized by the Germans and commandeered for use as the headquarters of the Wehrmacht (German armed forces) commander of Prague, General Toussaint, his staff, and other Nazi officials and aides during their seven-year occupation of Prague. Occupied afterwards briefly by the Russians and then the Czechoslovak General Staff, the US leased the property in 1945 before eventually buying it from the Czechoslovak government in 1948.

for a Torah-observant Jewish family to live in, kashering the kitchens and affixing mezuzos to the doorposts of the residence where he and his family would be staying. The kitchen staff “went into overdrive mastering the Jewish dietary laws”, learning to make traditional Jewish foods like challah and matzah ball soup, and sourcing kosher products, especially a variety of kosher meats, which were unavailable in Prague and had to be ordered from either Berlin or Vienna. Eisen and his family kept Shabbos in their new Czech home each week, sometimes in the company of various dignitaries and dining in a room and at a table that were once in the hands of the Nazis. As Eisen describes it, “It [was] mind-blowing, eating on kosher State Department china where the commander of the Nazi Wehrmacht used to live.” Frieda opted not to return to her homeland, even when her son was there serving as the ambassador. She passed away in 2012, during her son’s tenure in Prague, but not without a “tremendous sense of triumph” at

telling people, “The Nazis deported us in cattle cars and my son flew back on Air Force One,” a reference to a trip that Eisen made to Prague with Obama in 2010 for an international treaty signing ceremony. Joe Lieberman testified regarding Eisen’s appointment in the US Senate: “It is indeed a profound historical justice…that the ambassador’s residence in Prague, which was originally built by a Jewish family that was forced to flee Prague by the Nazis, [which], in turn, the Nazis took over…as their headquarters, now 70 years later, is occupied by Norman and his family. And I might, on a point of personal privilege, add that they observe the Sabbath there every Friday night and Saturday. So if you need any evidence that there is a God, I offer that to you.” Eisen ended up serving in Prague for almost four years, one of the longest tenures of any recent US ambassador there.

Speaking Hebrew at Penn Station My surprising encounter with a beggar in New York City. by Sara Cohen

Walking through Penn Station today I saw a homeless man playing music. In the busy NYC train station this is not an unusual sight and Itry to remember that behind each man begging is a sad and tragic story, and I give what I can. I was on my way after a long day at work and I stopped to give the beggar an uneaten sandwich that I had in my purse and a couple of granola bars that I didn’t end up eating for lunch. As I handed the man the sandwich bag and bars from my knapsack he asked me, “Ma nishma [how are you]?” and started to speak to me in Hebrew, throwing out various sophisticated phrases. I was definitely not expecting that! I sat down and started talking to this stranger and asked him how someone so seemingly distant from anything remotely Jewish knew so much Hebrew.

He paused and took a deep breath.

As I sat on the train for my final leg home, I thought about the amazing experience that I had just had. Who knew what a difference we could be making in one person’s life by giving him a bag of pretzels, a spare sandwich and a smile? This man’s connection to Jews was so deep that he went out of his way to learn our language so he could properly thank us for our friendship.

“Lately I’ve been reading Hebrew for Dummies at the library so that all the Jews I meet will know how much I appreciate their friendship. You folks always care. Because you’re my friends. And that’s what friends do.”

My heart fluttered with an inner pride and I felt so proud to be part of such an amazing people. I feel very fortunate to be on the list of this fellow’s “Jewish friends” that he has made over the years as a homeless man.

And with that, he wished me a “Layla tov [good night]” and picked up his guitar and continued to play.

During the mad rush in the dark winter nights, let’s keep in mind the opportunities that we have to spread a little bit of light. I suspect we really have no idea just how bright that light really is.

“I’m not Jewish but all my friends are,” he said confidently. “They always stop and give me food and flash a big smile when they pass by. Over the years they’ve been the people that consistently come back and make sure that I’m okay. You guys are my best friends you know.”

I brushed off my skirt, wished him a good night and joined the hundreds of people rushing to the train.

His response blew me away.

Rugalach 2 pkgs margarine (Israeli) or 1-lb butter or margarine - USA 4 cups flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 pkg yeast (Israeli) 50 grams or 2 yeast cakes in the USA or 3 packages dried yeast in the USA 1 cup warm water 3 eggs Put flour into a bowl, make a well in the center and add sugar, melted margarine, 3 eggs and yeast that has been dissolved in the warm water. Divide dough into eight balls. Blend sugar and cinnamon together. Place a generous handful of sugar and cinnamon on the board, and knead a ball into it, letting the dough absorb the sugar and cinnamon. On each slice place 1 or two raisins and roll each slice toward the middle to form rugalach. Bake in moderate oven, 350째, for 20 minutes.

Babka Many years ago we lived in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was there that my career in cooking started. A very dear friend gave me this recipe and the first time I made it I knew I had a winner.

been melted, 3 egg yolks, 1/4 cup sugar, vanilla, milk, sour cream, and the yeast which has been dissolved in 1/4 cup water. Mix into smooth dough and refrigerate in a covered bowl for several hours or overnight.

Two uncles came for a visit and I wanted to impress them. It was an overwhelming success. That evening I had to make the dough again to show my Aunts how to make it and the next morning I rolled it out so they could see how it was done. It is really so simple -- but neither of them ever made it. I became the babka maker in the family. When we left America to live in Israel, Debi, daughter #2 took over my job so that a babka is at every family function.

** I usually make a good supply of this mixture and keep it in an airtight jar without the jelly. It can be used for many cakes, toppings, or fillings.

50 grams yeast or 2 Fleishman's yeast or 3 packages Fleishman's dried yeast 1margarine = 2 sticks American margarine 1 1/4 cups sugar 3 egg yolks 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup milk or water 1/2 cup sour cream or pareve cream 4 1/4 cups flour 1/4 cup warm water 3 egg whites ** cinnamon, nuts, raisins, coconut and jelly or preserves Put flour into bowl and make a well. Add the margarine that has

Roll the dough out on a floured board or table to the largest size possible. I usually roll it out on the table and it takes up half of my kitchen table. The thinner the dough, the better the babka. Whip egg whites with the remaining cup of sugar into a meringue -- stiff peaks. Spread the meringue over the dough, as if icing it. Sprinkle the meringue generously with cinnamon, nuts, raisins, coconut, and a line of jam or jelly in the center of the dough. Roll dough into large roll, starting at the bottom and rolling up. Near the top, bring the dough forward and wrap around the roll. Cut into 6 even pieces. Place piece into a well greased tube pan, cut side down and up. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Bake at 400째 for 10 minutes then lower oven to 350째 for another 40 minutes. Do not over-bake!
