The Juicing Craze & The Liquidarian Diet BY Alyssa Eliza Elbogen

For whatever reason, the Liquidarian Diet fad has yet to really hit the market. We’ve heard of vegetarians, vegans, raw foodists, maybe even fruitarians. We’ve heard of the Atkins Diet, 80/10/10, Ketogenic & Gluten-Free diets. Each come with their own teachings, their own wisdom, their own traditions. I’d like to discuss the Liquidarian Diet and how I’ve seen it help people dramatically. But first, some background. Just like in any diet, the definition can vary. A Liquidarian Diet refers either to a

6

diet of 1) Strictly all liquid diet (anything goes as long as it’s liquid), 2) Strictly all juice, light soup, tea or water diet (no smoothies or thick soups) 3) Strictly juices, water and sun-tea (raw). Most of us have come across Liquidarian Diets when being required to have only liquids in preparation for a medical exam. Or, if someone is very sick and can only have liquids through a straw. It therefore may conjure up a sad picture. But sometimes we need to have the ‘medicine’ before we get sick; eat the

www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

healthy food before your doctor requires you to. The main effects of a liquidarian diet are that one feels lighter. One’s digestive tract is significantly less weighed down. A smoothie or juice is a somewhat predigested product which leaves less work for the body. Less work frees up more energy and so people feel more energetic. More energetic = people feel better! The amount of energy that the body spends on breaking down foods in our body takes up an alarming amount of energy. That

energy is not only felt in one’s stamina but also allows the body to focus on other areas of one’s body that may need attention and healing energy. Another benefit of the diet is that one has more time in one’s life. The amount of time it takes to consume a smoothie is nothing compared to all the meal prep, decisions and chewing we are accustomed to. The added simplicity & literal smoothness in one’s life adds to the smooth thinking and orderly feeling that one tends to experience when one is having strictly liquids. The reason people tend to lose weight on liquidarian diets is because we feel fuller longer. We feel fuller faster. We don’t stretch out the delicate stomach with heavy foods, rather a liquid fills it until we know that we’ve had enough. We can sip throughout the day or have set times to drink. There’s no need to overdo it. It’s safe to assume that one is usually going to be drinking healthily. Organic produce, smoothies, soups - these are jam packed with vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and enzymes. All of this goodness is very easily accessed by the body. The body doesn’t have to work hard to break it down. Importantly, the body is certainly not getting the confusing chemicals, tastes and refined sugars that tell the body that it’s lacking and constantly wants real nourishment. Why is now the best time to try a liquidarian diet? In the wintertime, we feel cold in the darkness and having cooked meals is a comforting experience for our psyche. But in the summer? It’s best to get out under the sun, exercise, and feel lighter. Now is the time to try out eating healthy, organic salads or going on a liquidarian diet you’ve been wondering about. Juice cleanses are very popular now, and they are not uniform at all. One can have mono-juices and keep things simple or one can have fantastically blended recipes that you can find at your local organic supermarket. At rare gems like Organic Circle, you can actually completely personalize your organic juice cleanse to have exactly what you’re craving, made by professionals with your health in mind. One of the only reasons one should avoid this diet is if one doesn’t want to lose any weight. In general, this diet has a lot to give to the world. And as with any diet, it’s important to have healthy, organic produce and products. We don’t have to be afraid to experiment with our bodies and see what makes us feel better. We don’t have to be afraid to be our own healers. When we try, we learn. We learn not what worked for others but what worked for us - and that, my friends, is entirely priceless. Only you can find that for yourself. Wishing us all an inspiring, light and beautiful summer ! Alyssa Eliza Elbogen is a certified Holistic Health Practitioner specializing in Detoxification. She holds a B.A. from U. Haifa in Jewish Thought & English Linguistics. Alyssa began her career in Israel, organizing & teaching on Detox Retreats. She currently works at Organic Circle in Brooklyn, NY as a Resident Health Coach.

Rabbi Ben Tzion Shafier

The Shmuz on the Parsha

The Extent of Reward Parshas Chukas

HASHEM said to Moshe, “Do not fear him, for into your hands have I given him, his entire people, and his land; you shall do to him as you did to Sichon, king of Amori, who dwells in Cheshbon.” — Bemidbar 21:34 The Jewish nation had just defeated the Emorim and were preparing to conquer Bashan. Og, the king of Bashan, led his army out to meet the Jews in battle. Og was a giant of a man and was feared amongst the nations and Moshe Rabbeinu was reluctant to attack. HASHEM reassured him, saying, “Do not fear him.” Rashi explains that Moshe was not afraid of Og because of his physical stature, but because of his personal merit. Many years earlier, in the time of Avraham Avinu, a coalition of five kings ruled the world. Four competing kings joined forces and waged war against these five kings and were victorious. During one of the battles, they captured Sedom, where Avraham’s nephew Lot had been living. Og survived that battle and ran to Avraham to tell him that Lot was being held captive. Because Og did this favor for Avraham, Moshe was afraid that the merit of that act would allow Og to beat the Jews in battle. This Rashi is very difficult to understand, as the Midrash also explains Og’s motivation. Sarah Imeinu was one of the four most beautiful women who ever lived. For many years, Og had his eye on Sarah. The problem was that she was a married woman. With the capture of Lot, Og saw his moment. His plan was simple. He would tell Avraham that his nephew

14

had been captured. Avraham, the altruistic tzaddik, would go to save his nephew. The four kings, the most powerful force on earth, would never allow a captive to go free. Avraham would enter into battle with them and be killed. And along would come the gallant Og to save Sarah from her widowhood. With this plan in mind, Og arrived to tell Avraham the news. Og wasn’t engaged in redeeming a captive; he was manipulating events to cause the death of an innocent man in hopes of taking his wife. Why would Moshe be afraid of the merit of such an act? That act wasn’t a mitzvah. If anything, it was a sin. The answer to this can best be understood with a mashal.

What’s your GPA? Imagine that a recent college graduate applies for a job, and the interviewer asks him about his academic record. “So tell me, how did you do in school?” “Well, my first semester, I got an A in Chemistry, a B in Accounting, and a B+ in Economics. The next semester, I got…” “Okay, okay,” the interviewer says. “You don’t need to give me every detail. Just tell me your overall grade point average” The employer doesn’t want to know

the minutiae. He’s just looking for an overview. He wants to know in general terms whether or not this fellow is intelligent and hard-working. To find out, he asks for the cumulative average. One of the reasons we don’t fear being judged at the end of our lives is that we assume that the judgment will be like a GPA, an average of everything that we’ve done. “I’m not afraid because, on balance, I was a good guy. I’m not saying I was a tzaddik. I’m not saying I was perfect. But I did a lot of good things, accomplished plenty. Granted, I could have done more. Certainly there were some things I should not have done. But overall, I’m okay.” The Mesillas Yesharim (Chapter 4) explains that in the World to Come, the judgment isn’t “on balance.” Every act is judged separately. For every act that was meritorious, I will be rewarded. For every act that I should not have committed, I will be punished. But one doesn’t cancel out the other. My mitzvos don’t wipe away my aveiros, and my sins don’t eliminate my mitzvos. Each one is weighed and measured, and rewarded or punished independently. Furthermore, just as each action is weighed separately, so to is each part of the action. If I volunteered to drive an elderly man to a doctor’s appointment, on one hand it is a great act. I took off an

entire afternoon to help a fellow Jew. For that, I will be rewarded. But what if while driving, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of arrogance thinking, “Look at me. How many people are as good as I am? Come on, how many people selflessly, without any drive for honor, help an old man? Not many…” So is this a mitzvah or an aveirah? The answer is both. The outer act was great. But the inner condition was flawed. For the act, I will be rewarded. The self-inflation, however, damaged me, and for that I need atonement. Each part weighs into the verdict. This judgment is very different than the way we assess things in this world. When we judge others, we focus on their intention. Was he trying to help me or to harm me? Is he a friend or foe? HASHEM’s ruling, however, is infinitely more exacting. There are many dimensions to each act, and many factors to be considered. What were your motives? How pure were they? Where were you coming from? Was this easy for you or difficult? Each act is judged separately, and each part of the act is broken down as well.

Was the act a mitzvah or a sin?

This seems to be the answer to Og. Og was plotting an act of murder. But he was instrumental in saving Avraham’s nephew. While his intention was evil, the act had merit; it helped a tzaddik. The precision of judgment is so great that nothing is overlooked. In most situations, an act like this, which was so devoid of purity, would have little weight. But this was the great Avraham that he had assisted. A favor to such a man, albeit a favor extremely damaged, has considerable merit. Moshe was afraid because the Jewish nation was entering into war, and war is a time of danger. In a time of danger, the sins of the people might be revisited, and the fate of the nation might be re-examined to determine whether they deserved a miraculous victory. In such a calculation, Og’s merit might tip the scale. This concept is very illustrating. By seeing the extent of judgment, we come to understand the greatness of man. We recognize how significant our actions are and how great an impact they have on us and on the world.

Sarah Halimi’s Murder

by Dr. Yvette Alt Miller

Masking Jew Hatred in France

W

hen Sarah Halimi, a 66-year-old Jewish doctor and kindergarten teacher, was brutally murdered in Paris in April 2017 – by a Muslim man who yelled “Allah Akbar” and called Dr. Halimi “Satan” – French police and journalists covered up the anti-Semitic nature of the crime. Police charged Dr. Halimi’s killer with aggravated manslaughter, not murder, and refused to categorize the attack as a hate crime. Now, two months after Dr. Halimi’s murder, French Jews and others are calling for a more open debate about the pervasive Jew hatred that’s poisoning parts of French society. Dr. Sarah Halimi was an Orthodox Jew. Her family had experienced tension with one of their neighbors, Kobili Traore, a local young drug dealer, who’d called Dr. Halimi’s daughter a “dirty Jewess”. On April 4, 2017, Kobili, 27, knocked on the door of some of his neighbors at 4:25 AM and forced his way into their third floor apartment. He was acting aggressively and this family, immigrants

18

from Mali, were so terrified they locked themselves in a bedroom. The father could hear Kobili reciting verses from the Koran through the door and called the police. It took the police 13 minutes to respond and they went to the wrong building. This delay and mistake cost Dr. Halimi her life. Kobili stepped out onto the family’s balcony and then climbed onto the Halimis’ balcony in a neighboring building. Police started getting more calls. One 4:45 AM phone call seemed to described Kobili beating Dr. Halimi. “It is an older woman, and she seems to suffer a lot,” the caller told the police. As Dr. Halimi screamed, neighbors woke up and witnessed her attack. One later recalled Kobili looking “bestial”. Some heard him yelling “Allahu Akbar”, “shut your mouth”, and calling Dr. Halimi the Devil. By now, six police officers were on the scene but, afraid they were facing a terrorist situation, they waited for an elite anti-terrorism unit to arrive. In the meantime, Kobili beat Dr. Halimi severely, rendering her nearly unrecognizable, then threw her out of her window, about 30 feet above the pavement. Dr. Halimi did not survive. Kobili then returned to the

www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

Malian family in the neighboring building, and began praying. He was finally arrested as he continued to pray at 5:35 AM. Despite the evidence of neighbors, the police resisted treating the murder as a hate crime. Although Sarah Halimi’s murderer had no history of mental illness, he claimed “temporary insanity” and police placed him in psychiatric evaluation. Although French law allows for criminals to be charged with hate crimes, which can add to the severity of their sentences, French prosecutors drafted an indictment of Dr. Halimi’s killer with voluntary manslaughter, with no mention of the fact this was, to all appearances, a serious hate crime. Now, French Jews are calling on the authorities to call Dr. Halimi’s murder an act of terror and a hate crime, and gaining some powerful voices of support in France and beyond. “Everything about this crime suggests there is an ongoing denial of reality,” 17 prominent French intellectuals wrote in an open letter in the newspaper Le Figaro; “We demand all the truth be brought to light in the murder of Sarah Halimi.”

Coincidentally, Sarah Halimi shared a surname with another French victim of a horrific, anti-Semitic murder: Ilan Halimi, who was abducted, tortured for 24 days, then murdered in 2006 in Paris. Despite the fact that his imprisonment, by a gang of Muslim and African immigrants and children of immigrants, was an open secret in their Parisian neighborhood, the police did not find Ilan and in fact missed a number of important clues during their investigation. On June 4, 2017, the French journalist Herve Gardette hosted a high-profile TV program called “Is There a Denial of Anti-Semitism in France?” and noted similarities between the two cases, especially “how long it took back then (in 2006) for the anti-Semitic character of (Ilan Halimi’s murder) to be admitted by the detectives and journalists. So nothing has changed.”

targeted the family because they were Jewish. A French Judge later dropped the hate crime portion of the indictment, removing the “aggravated circumstances” portion of their charge. In 2015, a rabbi and two other men were stabbed outside a synagogue by a man who shouted “Allah Akhbar” during the attack. Authorities initially called the attacker mentally ill, and only added the charge of an anti-Jewish hate crime after criticisms from the public. In 2003, in the same neighborhood where Sarah Halimi lived, another Jew was killed, seemingly at random, by a neighbor. Sebastien Selam, a 23-year-old Jew, was killed by a childhood friend who was Muslim. The killer cried out, “I’ll go to heaven, I killed my Jew!” Like Dr. Halimi’s murderer, Sebastien Selam’s murderer was also sent to a psychiatrist’s care instead of immediately being charged with a hate crime. The level of attacks against French Jews is startling. In 2014, French authorities recorded 800 cases of spontaneous anti-Jewish assaults and

French police refusal to call the murder of an Orthodox woman by a Muslim a hate crime is causing an uproar.

Shmuel Trigano, a French scholar who has written about anti-Semitism, traces the explosion of anti-Jewish hatred and violence in France to the beginning of the century, when antiJewish crimes started to increase rapidly. According to Mr. Trigano, many of these assaults are reported and investigated as simple crimes, and the anti-Jewish character of some attacks is simply swept under the rug. In 2014, for instance, a Jewish family in the Parisian suburb of Creteil was attacked by four men of African descent, who assaulted the daughter, robbed the home, and later boasted that they’d

aggressions: that’s over two each day, targeting a French Jewish population of

about 500,000 people. It’s time to start calling these attacks what they are: antiSemitism. Only then can France hope to confront the virulent hatred against Jews that’s thrives in some parts of French society. REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM AISH.COM

Real Friends The Key to a Healthy Life Feeling isolated can make you sick. ulianne Holt-Lunstad, a psychologist at Brigham Young University who consolidated data from over 140 investigations published over 28 years, reveals that feeling unpopular, disconnected or lonely predicts our life span. Those with a larger network of friends had an increased rate of survival. And the greater the quality of friendship, the longer the life. Being unpopular increases our chance of death more strongly than obesity, physical inactivity or binge drinking.

J

Accumulating more likes on your Facebook page is not the answer. A college student I know told me that she felt down during her first year away from home. Despite hundreds of Facebook friends there were very few ‘real’ people whom she could count on. No one knew what she was going through. Her online photos showed smiling faces and a good time. She got lots of ‘likes’. The moment she realized that it all meant nothing was eye opening.

Retweets do not make for a better life. 22

Researchers reveal that most of us are putting our energy into the wrong type of ‘popular’. We can be popular through status, which means we have visibility, power, and followers. We are prominent and seen on social media. Our influence is felt as our posts get forwarded. But then there is becoming popular through likability. Qualities like kindness, selflessness and loyalty bring popularity that is life changing. Genuine relationships are forged. Connections are made that generate positive feedback and physical well-being. Life becomes more beautiful when shared with cherished family and friends. Status achievers gain a popularity that breeds unhappiness and loneliness. Feelings of fulfillment arrive when likability accompanies popularity. No amount of social media followers can take the place of sharing time with a good friend.

Creating Connections We have lost the art of connection. The Hot Black Café in Toronto has declined to offer Wi-Fi to its customers and more cafes are following suit. The aim is to get customers to interact instead of

getting displaced in their phones. Think of coworkers waiting for their weekly meeting to begin. Instead of asking about family, vacation plans and how life has been, each individual is looking down silently. Where is the camaraderie? Have you been to a restaurant lately? Watch as entire families ignore each other. They are each on their own device. Toddlers and young children think this is normal; this is all they see. We are investing more energy into the person on our screen than those who are sitting right across from us. Real friendship requires presence. Nothing can replace seeing sorrow etched on the face of a companion and offering a hand in comfort. Looking into someone’s eyes transforms dark moments and make them bearable. Giving a hug conveys love. We create a deeper sense of connection. We bond and relieve isolation. Human beings thrive when we feel that we are not alone, that we are cared for deeply and cherished. You can’t gain that spark of friendship online. It remains a surface connection. Texting demands zero giving and zero sacrifice. Socializing in person requires a listening ear and heart. Decide to take the time to initiate deeper personal connections. Choose a friend with whom you’ve lost some touch

with. Rebuild bonds by setting aside time, sharing experiences and catching up in with no interruptions. You will discover the joy of friendship as you laugh together, mull over life, and try to find solutions to the problems that weigh you down.

The Positive Force of Friendship In the book The Happiness Trap, we learn that “People who feel more connected to others have lower levels of anxiety and depression. They have higher self-esteem, greater empathy for others, are more trusting and cooperative and as a consequence, others are more open to trusting and cooperating with them.” More than 25 percent of Americans revealed that they have no one to confide in, no one to share their problems with. No wonder that feeling loneliness and

isolation has brought sadness to so many. The Talmud tells the story of a righteous man named Choni who fell into a deep sleep for many years. His family and friends believed him to be dead. When he finally awoke and returned home no one would believe it was him. He went to the house of study where he used to teach, but no one recognized him. They quoted his teachings. “I am Choni!” he said. They, too, did not believe him. He became so distressed and anguished. He needed his family, he yearned for his friends. Broken hearted, he died. Our Sages taught that this is an example of the popular saying: “O chavrusa, O misusa” – either friendship or death. How painful are these poignant words. If we are blessed to have a family of friends and friends who are like family, make the time and investment to tap in to this incredible source of potential happiness and good health.

Start the week with easy to make and super flavorful Roasted Lemon chicken. I serve it with some baked sweet potatoes and green beans. Next is Chicken Lo Mein which is always a favorite in my house. Serve it with the Krispy Kale Chips and get excited that your family will eat a new veggie this year. Lastly, I’m sending some healthy apple muffins to school as a snack. I may even add some bran or flax seed to the recipe as long as no one is looking!

Roasted Lemon Chicken Roasted Lemon ChickenServes 6 2 chickens, cut into 1/8’s 1/4 cup chopped Italian parsley Lemon Sauce 2 cups fresh lemon juice 1 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano Salt and pepper to taste Preheat broiler for at least 15 minutes before using. Broil chicken pieces, turning once, for about 30 minutes or until skin is golden-brown and juices run clear when bird is pierced with a fork. Remove chicken from broiler, leaving broiler on. Make the sauce. Make the sauce. Whisk together juice, oil, vinegar, garlic, oregano, and salt and pepper Pour Lemon Sauce over the chicken and toss to coat well. If necessary, divide sauce in half and do this in two batches. Return to broiler and broil for 3 minutes. Turn each piece and broil for an additional minute. Place chicken on serving platter. Pour sauce into a heavy saucepan. Stir in parsley and place over high heat for 1 minute. Pour an equal amount of sauce over each chicken and serve with lots of crusty bread to absorb the sauce. Krispy Kale Chips Krispy Kale ChipsServes 4 – 6 1 head kale, washed, checked and thoroughly dried 2 tablespoons olive oil Sea salt, for sprinkling Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F. Remove the ribs from the kale and cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces. Lay on a baking sheet and toss with the olive oil and salt. Bake until crisp, turning the leaves halfway through, about 20 minutes. Serve as finger food. Note: Get creative here; add seasoned salt, parmesan cheese, lemon salt, or any other flavoring you like to make it even more delicious

Chicken Lo Mein Chicken Lo MeinServes 4 1 package udon, soba, or spaghetti noodles 2 teaspoons sesame oil, plus more as needed 12 ounces skinless chicken breasts, sliced into strips Dash dark soy sauce 1 teaspoon five-spice powder 1 teaspoon chile sauce, like S’riachi, optional 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 tablespoons peanut oil 1 red bell pepper, seeded and finely sliced 5 ounces snow peas 1 scallion, sliced lengthwise 2 tablespoons soy sauce Freshly ground black pepper, finely ground

with a splash of dark soy sauce, the five-spice powder, and chili sauce, if using. Mix well. Coat the chicken breasts lightly with the cornstarch. Heat a wok or sautĂŠ pan over a high heat, add the peanut oil, and heat until smoking. Then, add the chicken, and stir-fry for 2 to 3 minutes, or until cooked through. Add the red bell pepper, and stir-fry for 1 minute, then the snow peas and green onion and cook for less than 1 minute. Add the cooked noodles, and season with the light soy sauce, 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil, and black pepper, to taste. Stir well and serve immediately.

Cook the noodles for 7 minutes in a pan of boiling water until al dente, or as per the package instructions. Drain, then run them under cold running water, and drain again. Drizzle with a few splashes of sesame oil, and toss through to prevent them from sticking. Season the chicken

Healthy Apple Muffins Healthy Apple MuffinsMakes 12 1/4 cup chopped pecans 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup whole wheat pastry flour (You can use regular white flour here or I use WHITE whole wheat flour) 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon fine salt 1/4 cup canola oil 2 large eggs 1 cup natural applesauce 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3/4 cup low fat buttermilk (to make these pareve, substitute with 3/4 cup soymilk or non-dairy milk PLUS 1 ½ tablespoons white vinegar) 1 Golden Delicious apple, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch pieces (or use any apples from a local apple picking outing) Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a 12-capacity standard muffin pan with cooking spray.

In a small bowl, mix together the pecans, 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar and the cinnamon. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose and whole wheat flour, baking soda and salt.
In a large bowl, whisk the remaining 3/4 cup sugar and the oil until combined. Add the eggs, one at a time, whisking well after each addition. Whisk in the applesauce and vanilla. Whisk in the flour mixture in two batches, alternating with the buttermilk. Whisk just until combined. Gently stir in the apple chunks. Pour the batter into the prepared muffin pan and sprinkle with the pecan mixture. Tap the pan on the counter a few times to remove any air bubbles. Bake until a wooden pick inserted in center of one of the muffins comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Run a knife around the muffins to loosen them and unmold. Cool completely on the rack.
