Never Too Old At 102, Ingeborg Rapoport just passed her oral exam for her doctorate that the Nazis prevented her from getting. by Rabbi Benjamin Blech
A
new Guinness world record has just been set. It shows us how sometimes wrongs can be righted after many decades. It proves that it’s possible for dreams to be realized even in the late twilight of our lives. It is heartwarming and inspiring. But perhaps most of all it reminds us that age is not an insurmountable barrier to great achievements. Ingeborg Rapoport just passed her oral examination for her doctoral degree. At age 102, professors from the University of Hamburg questioned her for close to an hour on her thesis about diphtheria and were unanimous in their praise. True, the retired neonatologist who lives in Berlin had submitted her original scholarly work back in 1938 but after having her scientific conclusions validated she was not permitted to proceed with the oral exam for “racial reasons.” With a Jewish mother, the Nazis considered her ineligible for academic advancement and her medical career was categorically suspended. Emigrating to the United States, she would finally be able to achieve part of her dream. She got her MD, married and raised a family. Only her
doctorate was stolen from her by the cruelty of Nazi anti-Semitism. But recently, fate intervened. A colleague of her son, a Harvard medical school professor, shared her story with present Dean of the University of Hamburg’s medical school. Wanting to rectify the ancient wrong, the Dean allowed her now to qualify for the long denied degree. Nonetheless, she would have to pass an oral showing her knowledge of present-day advances in the field. And so Ingeborg, with failing eyesight, had friends read to her from the Internet all the current new information about diphtheria. She absorbed it all, retained it sufficiently to overwhelmingly satisfy her examiners and today occupies the unique record of being the oldest person, at the age of 102, ever to receive a doctoral degree. Grandma Moses and the A Team Of course old age is not always so kind. For many, Robert Browning’s words to “grow old along with me, the best is yet to be” seem more wishful thinking than realistic possibility. Yet, it bears noting that some of mankind’s most remarkable achievements came from those already far advanced in years. Much has been written about Anna Mary Robertson Moses, better

known to the world as Grandma Moses, a woman who didn’t begin to paint until the age of 76, when her hands became too crippled by arthritis to hold an embroidery needle. She found herself unable to sit around and do nothing, after a long life spent working on farms, and without any formal art training began a career spanning over a quarter of a century which would make her an internationally renowned figure whose paintings were praised by President John F. Kennedy as “inspiring an entire nation.”. There have been many others who made a powerful impact on the world even after becoming octogenarians. At 89, Arthur Rubinstein gave one of his greatest recitals in New York’s Carnegie Hall. At 89, Albert Schweitzer headed a hospital in Africa. At 88, Pablo Casals was giving cello concerts. At 88, Michelangelo conceived some of his greatest architectural plans. At 85, Coco Chanel was the head of a fashion design firm. At 84, Somerset Maugham wrote Points of View. At 83, Aleksandr Kerensky wrote Russia and History’s Turning Point. At 82, Winston Churchill wrote a History of English Speaking People. At 82, Leo Tolstoy wrote I Cannot Be

Silent. At 81, Benjamin Franklin negotiated the compromise that led to the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. At 81, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe finished Faust. But there is one more octogenarian who truly changed the history of the entire world. Grandma Moses may have inspired a nation but Moses the lawgiver, Moses the leader of the Jewish people, Moses who spoke “face-to-face” with the Almighty without doubt transformed all of mankind. Read the biblical story and you may perhaps be amazed to note that Moses began his career at the well advanced age of 80. It was then that he stood at a bush which burned but miraculously was not consumed. It was then that he began his mission to free the Jewish people from the slavery of Egypt and to bring them to Mount Sinai to receive the words of God’s Torah. It was then that he took upon himself the difficult role of leader, teacher and guide of the Jewish people so that they might become a light unto all the nations. And perhaps of all the messages which Moses would bring to the world, the one most closely linked with his age at the time of embarking upon a new career in life might well be the most inspiring. Age brings with it its own list of infirmities. Yet it also endows us with a kind of wisdom unknown to the young. It continues to offer us challenges and new opportunities. We may be too old to run marathons but we are never too old to dream dreams – the dreams of Ingeborg Rapoport, of Grandma Moses, and of all those who showed us that life offers ongoing trials, opportunities and blessings.

THE WEINREB BROTHERS BAND NOW HEAR THEM LIVE AT A SIMCHA NEAR YOU
T
he Weinreb Brothers, natives of Monsey, have music in their blood. Growing up, one would often hear the sounds of exotic rhythmic grooves and extended musical jams floating from their basement windows. Now, years later , The Weinreb Brothers have just released their debut album, “The Weinreb Brothers- May’ain Olam Habah”, available at your local Judaica store. It is a culmination of their musical talents and knowledge, in one outstanding work and includes an eclectic mix of acoustic based jams, featuring both their original songs and totally re-
envisioned covers of old classics. They also just formally launched THE WEINREB BROTHERS BAND, now available to make your Bar Mitzvah, Sheva Brochos, Kumzits , Dinner, or any other event UNFORGETTABLE! It’s a totally fresh sound that has never been heard before, and is sure to draw you in and not leave go! I sat down with Yoel M, the oldest brother, and had a few words with him: BUZZ: are you really all brothers?

YM: of course!! I’m not sure why I get that question a lot and people seem surprised...
BUZZ: What’s instruments do you guys play?
BUZZ: Just these past few months I’ve been seeing you guys around a lot and really love your sound, when did you form the band?
YM:When I was a teenager I picked up acoustic and electric guitar. I decided I needed someone to help back me up so I pushed my next brother, CS, to accompany me on the keyboard. He then went on to play piano and bass. After that our two youngest brother Mendy and Reuvain literally grew up surrounded by music. Mendy sings the lead vocals, plays ukulele, and has become a great composer. Reuvain is really super talented, he seems to just pick up any instrument and just master it! As a five-year-old he used to rock out with us on a Djembe (African percussion) , Now he plays Flute/sax/Bongos/ Harmonica/Clarinet... basically anything he can get Code with phone to his hands on! Weinreb
YM: Well we’ve always enjoyed playing music together but due to busy schedules and logistics generally limited our gigs to family and friends. Now, after releasing our album, which was a great experience for all of us, plus the increased demand, we decided it was time to formally launch our band to share our art with the public. BUZZ: Its clear that you guys are not just another typical band, what do you think makes your music different?

YM: We feel that we fill a gap that’s sorely missing from the Jewish music scene. In an age when some people think that the louder the music is the better, we want to provide an alternative. Real music...classy...touching the soul with feeling and purity not just volume, and cookie cutter arrangements. We often employ acoustic guitar and African percussion to create a much more “natural” sound. Of course we still “rock the house” when appropriate...Also, I think just the fact that we are brothers and have been playing our whole lives together gives us a cohesive but at the same time spontaneous feel. At this point we almost always know what everyone else will be doing...we always try to enhance each other’s playing and not just play over one another; we’re really one unit, with four different perspectives. Please call for extended
BUZZ: if you had to describe your music who would you compare it to?
YM: I would say were definitely influenced by the Carlbach style musicians, like Soulfarm ( we actuall got to work with C Lanzbom on our album!) and Moshav band , but also Yossi and Avi Piamenta and other great jewish musicians... BUZZ: that’s great! Thanks for your time, looking forward to hearing you guys again and good luck with the new album...any last thoughts? YM:Thanks! I just hope people enjoy listening to our music as much as we enjoy creating it , and BS”D connect with all the feeling we put into it... ENJOY THE MUSIC!

Eclipsed: Poland’s Secret Jews I was raised in Warsaw as a Catholic Pole. Today I have embraced my Jewish identity. by Tusia Dabrowska
T
usia Dabrowska grew up in Warsaw unaware that she was Jewish, a fact she suspected and then confirmed in her teens. For the past 15 years she splits her time between Wasrsaw and Brooklyn. My grandmother, an agile woman in her mid-sixties, leaned over a pale, pink-tiled bathtub and reached behind the washing machine next to it. We were in the basement of her house. She was too small and had to climb up the bathtub ledge. Crouching, she finally reached a plastic bag. It was a dry and warm Polish summer in 1995. My grandmother was back on the floor, protectively holding the tightly wrapped package, a set of pictures of her family. The washing machine had long ago stopped working; it was a kind of treasure chest, hiding the memories of family that was unmentionable. My grandmother always believed that it was better our family history died with her. There was something unnamed, yet shameful about us. Kids said my family was ugly, polite adults said I looked Spanish, less polite adults said many other things. I grew up in
Warsaw, away from the small town my mother escaped as soon as she could, and the street my grandmother lived on her whole life, including the years she spent hiding in another basement. That was the street to which my grandmother, like her mother, belonged. She belonged to this street when it was the heart of the Jewish District. She had belonged to it the 50 years when we were the last Jews there. Even before the war ended, while still in hiding, my grandmother was christened. For the rest of her life, she strived to find her home, to belong, to pass. This obsessive need to fit in shaped my grandmother’s choices, and it echoed in my mother’s life. I grew up knowing that the most difficult aspect of fitting in is the threat that at any moment we might be discovered. The erasure of the Jewish life in our part of the world was, mildly put, a discombobulating experience for those who survived. But in Poland, it was compounded by the almost complete demolition of virtually all social structures. Moreover, communism had no interest in rebuilding social bonds based in democratic practices.

This meant that growing up 40 years after the war, I was still vulnerable to opinions about who I was offered voluminously to me by cab drivers, lonely drunks, old women who needed a reason to cut me in the line at the store, and a neighbor who thought I played music too loud. I was not only susceptible to their opinions; I had no other point of reference. My grandmother was a Catholic who dyed her hair Henna-red and who destroyed her family pictures. The same pictures she had shared with me only once. On her deathbed in 2006, for the first time since the War, she told my mother, in utter confidentiality, that we were Jewish. My mother learned she was Jewish some 35 years before when her classmate told her he couldn’t date her. But had he not told her, there were other clear giveaways. Like the fact that my grandmother kept pictures in the washing machine. And that challah bread was most delicious on Fridays. Or that Paul Newman was the only light-haired actor that my grandmother thought handsome. Against her deepest fears, my grandmother passed on to us a wealth

of culture, albeit an amalgam of Polish and Jewish traditions. And it was the strength of that world which guided my mother in Warsaw. She moved there in the late 1970s, approximately a decade after the last round of expulsions of Jews from Poland. But in comparison to what my mother had grown up with, the capitol brimmed with Jewish life. The socio-cultural association of Jews in Poland, formal and not, sought to make sense of the remnants of Jewish life. When I was growing up, virtually everyone my mother was friends with was Jewish. It was an unnamed network of people who kept their life stories for late night whispery conversations. They were few in numbers and had a very narrow, if any, connection to a positive sense of their ethnic, cultural, or religious identity. But out of the sense of an unspoken bond, they also supported each other, including women like my mother, a single mother from rural Poland with a sickly child, a prematurely born daughter with kidney problems. I’ve come to realize that the hardest part of overcoming the illness that marked our identity is not the cherishing of traditions that were passed on to me. It is reaching the place where I can begin to outline what was taken away from me. This sense of loss is a common sentiment among young people, Jewish or not, in Poland. However, to me,the Jewish festivals that fetishize the shtetl past are as alienating as Chabad Centers popping up in Poland. At a time when most young people, for better or worse, pick and chose their identities to then stretch them beyond accepted boundaries, being Jewish in Poland often feels as if you’re perpetually perched on the set of Fiddler on the Roof. Like many other Warsaw Jews, I felt insatiated. Ostensibly preparing to write a novel, I spent a year researching everyday practices of Jewish women in pre-World War II Varshe. At YIVO’s photo archives I looked for pictures of I.L. Peretz to

This obsessive need to fit in shaped my grandmother’s choices, and it echoed in my mother’s life. see the apartment in which his wife and companion in social activism lived. In the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum online photo archives, I studied women’s fashion. While reading a variety of blogs devoted to old Warsaw I hunted for trivia. I learned about idea markets where Jewish political agitators encouraged other Jews to join their party. I read about the notorious Adria restaurant and nightclub, which was run by the composer Henryk Gold and was considered one of the centers of cultural—Jewish and Polish, life. I discovered Jewish feminist activists, bilingual radicals, and tri-lingual writers—hoydenish dreamers who populated the streets of my birth city 50 years before me. I found my home. After the war, Warsaw was, at least architecturally, rebuilt. The past – diverse and riddled with ethnic and cultural tensions, yet rich and co-
habitable – was gone. The very few remnants of the past that survived had their function changed as if to hide their original purpose and inhabitants. From the Warsaw that survived, more – like a wood synagogue near my mother’s apartment – were demolished by the early 1970s. It was assumed that Jewish architecture had no purpose or use in the country. And as communism covered the country first with majestic limestone edifices and then cheap concrete, it seemed that the once vibrant Jewish life has become a geological fact. My own apartment in Warsaw, built right after the war, is partially constructed from repurposed rubbles. Ghosts of that other Warsaw live in the walls of my home, and they give me the strength and pride to be Jewish in Poland now. For a Polish Jew, creating the present has to be rooted in learning to draw on the past, beyond grief and fear. Allowing the voices of erased histories to echo in and through me helps my own voice to reveal joy in being Jewish, without feeling guilt or discomfort. My experience of discovering my family’s history, redefining my belonging and my role in my community is a process that mirrors that of Poland’s shift into a free country. Perhaps this is the plight of being a Jew in Poland today-never quite feeling grounded in your place in history. Tusia is one of a number of younger Polish Jews featured in Adam Zucker’s documentary film-in-progress, The Return. The film explores being Jewish in Poland today by following four young women who were raised Catholic only to discover they were Jewish in their teens. Each struggles to create a living Jewish identity in a virtual vacuum—within the country that was once the epicenter of the Jewish world. Zucker has been travelling to Poland for the past four years to capture the story.

The Talmudic Formula for Success I made my fortune but didn’t feel successful. What was missing? by Bob Diener
A
fter practicing corporate and securities law for a couple of years at one of the largest law firms in the world, I decided to pursue my entrepreneurial passions and start a travel business. I worked hard and had a passion to succeed. My dream was to have enough annual profits to sell the company and have enough funds from the sale to retire and do whatever I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Buy a nice condo, fancy sports car, travel and more. When we exceeded that annual profit goal, I sold the company and moved back to Florida where I grew up to enjoy life. I thought I reached a level of great success, but six months later I was so bored. I didn’t feel successful. I felt a lot was missing. I started looking for answers. I remembered learning from my paternal grandfather, Juda Diener, that the best place to search for answers to life’s tough questions is the Talmud. I watched him study Talmud every day. As a witness of the Holocaust, he believed the way to
win the war against those determined to destroy the Jewish people is to educate our people on our great traditions and sacred texts. Only when we understand and appreciate our great heritage and resources will we fight to preserve them. He gave away most of his fortune to starting Jewish Day schools. He believed that the Talmud was the backbone of Judaism and that if he could get thousands of people studying Talmud regularly it would make them much more committed to preserving Judaism. Along with Rabbi Pinchas Teitz, one of the top leaders and scholars at the time, they came up with the brilliant idea back in the fifties of broadcasting a page of Talmud every week on New York radio. There was no Internet then; the major place people went for news was the radio. This program was so successful that is lasted for 36 years. I later spent several years in Jewish Day School studying Talmud and was always impressed at the deep level of wisdom it contained. I knew the Talmud was

the right place to figure out what I was missing. Did I really achieve success? Webster’s dictionary defines success as the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame. What was Judaism’s definition for success? The Talmudic Formula Judaism’s formula for success in life can be found in the tractate of Shabbat, 31a. It is a rabbinical discussion of the questions one is asked at the end of one’s days in the heavenly court. The scholars discuss the ultimate questions asked as a way of explaining what is most important in life and to determine how one can measure the success of one’s life. 1. Were you honest in your business dealings? The first question we are asked is whether or not we were honest in business. Judaism places an emphasis on one’s character and teaches that the most important thing one can do in his life is be honest, especially when the temptation is to do the opposite.

It is not achieving wealth as Webster’s dictionary defines success, but how that wealth was obtained that defines success. If it was obtained dishonestly, it is meaningless. “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways” (Proverbs 28:6). Judaism measures success by asking did we keep our promises, have personal integrity and put honesty above profit? When tempted with profitable but ethically questionable deals, I always think about this first question and pass on the deal. 2. Did you set aside regular time to study? Without regular study, we lose focus and often go down the wrong path. With regular study, we can continue to improve, utilize the brain
3. Did you build a family and support the education of the next generation? Success is not just what we have done personally, but what we have done to pass on Jewish values and wisdom to the next generation. Did you have children and raise them to continue the mission of improving the world around us? Whether you had your own children or not, did you make sure your community has the resources to provide a Jewish education for the children in your community? I decided it was time to get serious about finding a mate and raising a family. I changed my whole approach towards dating and stopped wasting time dating anyone that didn’t share my values. I looked for a spouse
world around you better? Success is not just achieving wealth but how we used that wealth. Did we use it only for ourselves or did we use it to help others and improve our community? I try to take this this seriously. I realized my pursuit and accumulation of wealth was not in and of itself success. Something was missing. When we have wealth, we become a steward of that wealth. It is just as difficult to find the right places to give our wealth as it is to earn the wealth. But success only comes from the complete package. Earning it without spending it right is not success. Earning it and working hard to find the best use of that wealth is how we become successful. I decided to make sure I did something every day to improve our world. I set up a foundation and regularly donated a portion of my
Without regular study, we lose focus and often go down the wrong path. With regular study, we can continue to improve, utilize the brain and talents our Creator has given us to the fullest. and talents our Creator has given us to the fullest. We need to constantly evaluate where we are in life and strive to improve. Without setting a regular time, we probably won’t do it – hence the question is whether we set up “regular” time to study. This means we made it a priority. Did you strive to improve or are you just status quo? Did you implement the things you learned? After studying this piece of Talmud, I started devoting one hour every week to study. I closed my door and studied for a hour with either a rabbi or study group. I since expanded this to almost daily study with my kids. I’m amazed how much more fulfilled I am after an hour of study. But we need to make it a priority and do it regularly, regardless of how busy we are.
4. Did you do your part to improve the world around you to lead to the ultimate redemption – Tikun Olam? When you look back at your life, what did you contribute to make the

that wanted a large family, a Jewish home, understood the importance of a Jewish education and wanted to be involved in the community. I looked for a spouse that had the qualities I wanted to pass on to my children: honesty, integrity, warmth, empathy, humility, humor, a concern for others and more. I was very fortunate to find a spouse that has these qualities. We’re both heavily involved in Jewish education, the Jewish community and philanthropy, and have been having fun together since our first date over 21 years ago.
income. I became involved in the community. I found the organizations I believed were making the biggest impact on improving our local Jewish community, the State of Israel, keeping the U.S. behind Israel, educating our children, helping children with special needs and providing for the needy. I actively volunteered my time to help make organizations more efficient with the business skills I had. I encouraged and recruited others to give and become active. These questions have become my guiding light. Why not ask yourself these questions now and make sure you have the right answers when you get to heavenly court?

Cool Dishes
for Hot Summer Days
GITTA BIXENSPANNER, ND

ith summer upon us, days are hot and humid and thus cool dishes are more appetizing than hot ones. It is much more appealing to open the refrigerator, rather than the oven. At the same time, we want to spend as much time as possible outdoors, rather than toiling over the stove. The array of fresh summer fruits and vegetables are dazzling and beckoning for our attention. Indulge in these goodies while they last, as they are superbly nutritious and delicious. Furthermore, it is very important to eat meals that respect the seasons, for they will be a lot easier to digest and assimilate.

STEAMED ASPARAGUS WITH MAYONNAISE DRESSING Asparagus comes in two varieties: white, and green. White asparagus should be very well washed and may be used as is. Green asparagus may be infested. Insects are usually found in the tips, and under the gills. In order to use the asparagus, it is preferable to cut off the tips completely and then peel the stalks from the top down, removing the gills in the process. Once the stalks are peeled, they can be eaten raw or used in soups, salad, stews or stir- fries. You can always use the Bodek brand. Ingredients 1 package asparagus 2 cups water Salt to taste 1 medium onion chopped 2 garlic cloves minced 1 Tbs oil 1 Tbs mayonnaise Directions In a pot steam asparagus in shallow water for 20 minutes. Sauté onions and garlic in oil for 10 minutes. Line sautéed onions and garlic on a plate, place steamed asparagus over onions. Garnish with some mayonnaise. Serve as entrée or a side dish.

Hello Everyone, Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the US today and it has been for quite a few decades now. Doctor’s have often said that a high cholesterol is one of the main indicators of the possibility of heart disease because cholesterol can build up in the blood vessels and lead to arteriosclerosis and heart disease. I see a lot of bloodwork and one of everyone’s major concern is their total cholesterol. However, I’ve been seeing a lot of cases recently of people who want to stay off of statins in order to avoid its side effects. They are working on their diet, exercising and taking supplements to lower their cholesterol..... And it’s working! That’s right. It’s working and without medication. However, sometimes it will need some fine tuning. For example, let’s say your cholesterol came down, but so did your HDL. As you may know, the HDL is the high density lipoprotein and you want it to be over 50. Or let’s say that your cholesterol is in a normal range, but your LDL (low density lipoprotein) is over the normal limits. That is still a problem because the LDL is not good if it is over 100. So what do you do now? I will give you a list of action steps that you can take to fine tune your

bloodwork so that you can bring the lipid profile (as it is called) totally back into normal range (or close to it). Aerobic exercise keeps your blood flowing through your arteries and strengthens the heart muscle. Try to get in 5 days a week of 30 minutes each. You can use the treadmill, elliptical, or go to the gym for your aerobics. You can also make use of this beautiful spring weather and go outdoors for a bike ride or a brisk walk or even a jog (if your joints are healthy). Don’t smoke. (This may seem obvious but you can’t imagine how many people try to eat well, exercise and still smoke.) Smoking clogs the arteries and is totally forbidden. Studies have shown that one alcoholic drink a day (yes I’m talking about whiskey, schnapps or whatever you call it) can raise your HDL (good) cholesterol. That may be true, but it does not lower the LDL so it is not a good option. Eat a good diet. (Self explanatory.) But there are certain dietary pointers that can help with your blood lipids. (fats) Make sure you get at least 25 grams of fiber daily. This can come from raw vegetables, whole grains (especially oats), flaxseed or flaxseed meal, and psyllium. Fiber comes in two forms: insoluble and soluble fiber. You want to have some soluble fiber since that is what will effect your cholesterol the
most. (Oats is particularly high in the soluble form) Once you are following a healthy lifestyle, you can start drinking some red wine. (and I mean some. Don’t overdo this.) Red wine contains resveratrol which is a potent antioxidant and has been demonstrated to help with blood lipids. If you don’t want to drink wine, you can take resveratrol supplements. Niacin (one of the B vitamins) has been demonstrated to lower cholesterol and LDL. The reason why many people do not take niacin is because they cannot handle the skin flush and itchiness. The flush just lasts for about 10-15 minutes, so if you are not bothered by this then niacin can be very effective. Last but not least there is the famous Red Yeast Rice. This is almost as effective as taking a statin, however, one must be careful since even though red yeast rice is natural, it can still cause liver toxicity so that needs to be monitored while you are on this protocol. I hope this information helps you. If you know anyone who can benefit from this please pass it on. Any questions, just email me in return and I’ll try to help address your concerns. Until next time...... To Your Health,
