Warren Buffett’s

Gems of Wisdom by Sara Debbie Gutfreund

Want to know what’s in Warren Buffet’s daily planner?

A

good friend of Warren Buffett was having dinner with Warren and a dozen others right before the New Year. As they discussed different upcoming events and meetings, Mr. Buffett pulled out a small, personal planner for 2017. “Do you want to know what I have in my daily planner?” Everyone at the table leaned forward, eager to see what was in the planner. He held the planner up and showed them blank page after blank page. “I have nothing planned. Nothing. I need all the time I have to learn and think.” Everyone at the table sat there silently for a moment as they thought about their overflowing calendars. Mr. Buffett was living one of the quotes for which he is well known: “Invest as much as you can in yourself. You are your biggest asset by far.” When Buffett is asked what he does with most of his time, he answers that he reads. He reads all day, and he thinks. That seems to be how he comes up with his greatest ideas. But it’s also how he has grown into one of the most giving, thoughtful leaders of our generation. Here are some more gems of wisdom from Warren Buffet: 1. On Israel: “You can tell prospective investors that I would have taken a perpetual bond if you had offered one. I believe Israel is going to be around forever. If you are looking for brains, energy and dynamism in the Middle East, Israel is the only place you need to go.”

2. Investing in the next generation: “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree long ago.” 3. Lessons from yesterday: “In the business world, the rearview mirror is always clearer than the windshield.” 4. Taking action: “Predicting rain doesn’t count. Building arks does.” 5. Protect your good name: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” 6. Developing habits: “Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.” 7. The value of family: “Basically, when you get to my age, you’ll measure your success in life by how many of the people you want to have love you actually do love you.” 8. Money and character: “Of the billionaires I have known, money just brings out the basic traits in them. If they were jerks before they had money, they are simply jerks with a billion dollars.” 9. What matters is what you do today. “The investor of today does not profit from yesterdays’ growth.” 10. Look for the next small step. “I don’t look to jump over 7-foot bars. I look

around for 1-foot bars that I can step over.” 11. On love: “The only way to get love is to be lovable. It’s very irritating if you have a lot of money. You’d like to think you could write a check: I’ll buy a million dollars’ worth of love. But it doesn’t work that way. The more you give away love, the more you get.” 12. On what’s important: “If you get to my age in life and nobody thinks well of you, I don’t care how big your bank account is, your life is a disaster.” 13. On mentors: “The best thing I did was to choose the right heroes.” 14. On thinking for yourself: “A public opinion survey is no substitute for thought.” Warren Buffett still resides in his modest home in Omaha, Nebraska that he bought before he became wealthy. He has donated millions of dollars to Israel and has earmarked the majority of his wealth to nonprofits. As his son Peter, a musician and an author, remarked: “My father transferred values to me, not wealth. He doesn’t believe in inherited wealth. His management style is the way he is in life. In a business environment, he finds great management and says ‘I believe in you’ and then leaves them alone. That’s the kind of father he is too. I would have never found my own success if I knew that my father was there to bail me out.” REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM AISH.COM

The Non-Jew who Saved My Father from the Nazis by Rabbi Moshe Zeldman

M

y father, who passed away recently at the age of 82, shared with me a truly amazing story about his childhood. My father, Bernard (Baruch) Zeldman, was born in the town of Simferopol, Russia in 1934. He was nine years old when Russia entered World War Two to fight against the Nazi threat. His childhood mostly consisted of him, his 15-yearold sister, their mother and grandmother fleeing eastward as the Nazis pushed further into Russia. They lived in bombed out buildings, basement shelters, overflowing refugee centers and sometimes open fields where, after days of traveling by foot, they’d just dropped from exhaustion. Nourishment often consisted of furtively digging potatoes out of the frozen ground of local farmers in the middle of the night. The Russian government, trying to protect their citizens, sent hundreds of them, including my father and his family, on a large barge that traveled east down the river. They would stop at neighboring villages and ask locals to take in families. The response in most places was, “We’ll take anybody but Jews.” As the days wore on and rations were running low, my father, at this point seven or eight years old, was getting quite sick and

26

weak. At every stop, they were desperately hoping for a salvation. Finally, a young, non-Jewish Russian woman came to the port and said, “I want to take in a Jewish family.” Her name was Mavra and my father and his family lived with her for many months. She saved their lives. Throughout the long, cold Russian winter she fed them, gave them shelter and taught them how to milk the cows, harvest the crops and fix machinery. But as the Nazis grew ever closer, father and his family had to pick up and leave. He vividly remembers a conversation that took place as they were saying goodbye to Mavra. “You saved our lives and there’s no way we can repay you. You’re not Jewish. Why did you specifically ask to take in a Jewish family?” Mavra replied, “Years ago when I was young, my parents were imprisoned by the Russians for anti-communist activity. I was alone, and the government sent me to Siberia for two years. After a train ride that lasted days, I arrived late one night at the station in Siberia. I didn’t know a soul, I had no money, and it was absolutely freezing outside. I had no idea how I was going to survive the night, never mind two years! “And then, out of nowhere, a man appeared and offered to take me into his home. They didn’t have much but they made me a part of their family. They clothed me, fed me and saved my

How one act of kindness triggered never-ending reverberations that are still being felt today. life. But there were a few things that were strange about them. They were always deeply immersed in these big books written in a funny language that reads right to left. The wife always had her hair covered. They had a special ceremonial meal every Friday night and strange holidays and customs. When my exile to Siberia was over and I was getting ready to depart, the father took me aside and said, ‘Mavra, you don’t owe us a thing. We did this purely from our hearts. There’s only one thing I ask. If one day you ever come across Jews that are in trouble or need help, pass on this favor to them.’”

69-Year-Old Bar Mitzvah Boy My father and his sister lived through the war. In 1945 he came to Canada by boat as a 13-year-old boy. He never had a bar mitzvah. I don’t think he even knew what it was. And he was never able to track down Mavra after the war. He married my mother and sent his three children to Jewish day school, and witnessed over time how one after the other, we all became observant, got married, and had our own

kids. At age 68, my father announced that it was time to make himself a bar mitzvah! He contacted our local Rabbi, cracked his teeth over the Hebrew, the Torah reading and blessings, the whole shebang. For his 69th birthday, he invited the extended family, all his old friends that helped him settle in Canada, and singlehandedly cooked the food for 80-person Shabbat lunch (he loved to cook). During his bar mitzvah speech, he said in not so many words, “My wife and I have three kids that have become observant, and all of our grandchildren are observant. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” My parents made their home kosher, began observing Shabbat and going to shul regularly. He lived for 13 years after his bar mitzvah. Think about the impact that one act of kindness can make. It began with the kindness from an unknown Jewish family in Siberia that lead to another act of kindness by a young non-Jewish woman to a Jewish family, that lead to giving life to my father, his children, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, not to mention the impact each of us is making in our own lives. One act triggered never-ending reverberations that are still being felt today. REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM AISH.COM

One Kidney, Three Lives . by Rabbi Shlomo Landau

I

t takes a special type of person to be a kidney donor. Donating a piece of oneself and exposing oneself to risk represents a whole new level of giving. Yet most kidney donors I’ve spoken to insist that they wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again if they could! Tamar is one such special person. In our town, everyone knows that Tamar is always willing to help anyone in need. Then she announced that she was in the process of being cleared for kidney donation. A physician herself, Tamar knew that a person only needs one kidney, but for many of us, the thought of not having a spare is unsettling. But Tamar was grateful for the unique opportunity to literally save someone’s life. On a beautiful fall morning, Tamar went under the knife at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. Her kidney was given to a woman who was desperately trying to hold on despite total kidney failure. Thankfully, the transplant went well and the young mom got a new lease on life. Over the next few months Tamar had less energy, but her strength eventually returned and she was back to her old self in less than half a year. This is just the beginning of the story. A few months later, Tamar was invited to be a guest speaker at a weekend retreat where she was asked to share her experience of donating her kidney, with the hope of inspiring others to amplify their generosity as well. One of the participants at the retreat was a middle-aged man by the name of Jonathan. He was at the retreat because his wife had dragged him along. Yet when Tamar

38

One woman’s selfless act of donating her kidney has unforeseen reverberations began talking about her experience, Jonathan was mesmerized and captivated by her tale of kindness. When he got home, Jonathan went to the website of Renewal, the non-profit organization that facilitated Tamar’s kidney donation. He read the testimonials, perused the website and was further inspired. A short while later he contacted Renewal to begin the screening process to become a kidney donor. Within the year, Jonathan had surgery and donated his kidney to a young man who had been suffering renal failure. Tamar’s kidney donation had saved a second life. But the saga was not yet over. Six months after Jonathan donated his kidney, he went back to Mt. Sinai for a post-op follow-up. During this routine examination, doctors identified a suspicious growth on his thyroid, which was subsequently diagnosed as an early stage of cancer. The tumor was promptly removed and Jonathan was given a clean bill of health. The doctors informed him that had he not donated a kidney and required a post-op examination, in all likelihood his tumor would not have been discovered until a much later stage, which could have had a very different outcome, G-d forbid. Tamar’s kidney donation had now saved a third life! Each of us can choose to be givers in our own small or grand way. And we never know the ultimate impact our act of kindness may have. Living Well Gluten Free Gitta Bixenspanner n.d.

Gluten free has become the latest BUZZ word (excuse the pun) in healthy circles. Who needs to avoid gluten? People who suffer from Diabetes as well as with all kinds of bowel problems such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), IBD (assorted irritable bowel diseases), Celiac disease etc. Years ago when people were diagnosed with any of these ailments they were at a loss of where to find gluten free items. Today we have become more knowledgeable about these disorders and thus gluten free items can be found everywhere. Going gluten-free doesn’t require embarking on hour-long search and rescue missions for expensive GF pastas and breads. Plenty of healthy, flavor-packed meals are naturally gluten-free, super simple to make, and loaded with good-for-you nutrients. Here are 5 of our favorites.

Nourishing Red Lentil Soup Red lentils are a beautiful color orange when dry, but they become a rather drab yellow when they cook. This can be disappointing, until you taste the lentils. This soup is very filling and great for gluten free diet. A few gluten free crackers or rice cakes almost make a full meal. INGREDIENTS 2 Tbs canola oil or peanut oil 1 medium or large onion, chopped 4 garlic cloves, minced Salt to taste 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp white pepper or to taste 1 (28-ounce) can chopped tomatoes with juice 1 pound red lentils (about 2 1/8 cups), washed and picked over 2 quarts water or chicken stock Cayenne to taste (optional) Juice of 1/2 lime FOR GARNISH Chopped green onions Toasted sunflower seeds PREPARATION Heat the oil in a large, heavy soup pot over medium

heat and add the onion. Cook, stirring, until tender, about 5 minutes, and add the garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt, the cumin and cayenne. Stir together for about a minute, until the garlic is fragrant, and stir in the tomatoes with their juice. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring often, for 10 minutes, until the tomatoes have cooked down slightly. Adjust spices to taste. Stir in the lentils and water or chicken stock. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer 30 minutes. Add salt to taste and continue to simmer for 15 to 30 minutes, until the lentils have fallen apart and thickened the soup. Using the back of your spoon, mash the lentils against the side of the pot to thicken the soup further. Add the pepper and add cayenne if you want more punch. Taste and adjust salt. Stir in the lime juice. If you wish, puree with an immersion blender or in batches in a blender, holding a towel over the lid to prevent hot soup from splashing out, and return to the pot. Adjust spices to your taste. Heat through and serve, topping each bowl with a generous sprinkling of chopped spring onions and the toasted sunflower seeds. Preparation 20 minutes Serves 4

Ingredients 1 cup quinoa 2 cups chicken broth 1 Tbs vegetable oil 3 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, cut into 1-inch pieces 8 spears fresh asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces 1/2 red bell pepper, chopped

Marshall’s Mid-Life Crisis by Sara Debbie Gutfreund

Top five lessons from a Blog post that went viral.

W

hen Marshall Karp wrote about his mid-life crisis on a blog he thought maybe it would resonate with a few people. He certainly did not expect that just eight days after his post, he would have a quarter of a million views, 3300 upvotes and over a 100 comments and messages. Far more people than he thought were experiencing the same confusion and struggle that he had gone through and they were grateful for his insights. Here are what I think are his top five lessons. 1. External appearances and possessions do not lead to fulfillment. “At the age of 39 I had it all. A loving wife, two fantastic kids, an apartment in New York City, a house in the country, new car, nice vacations and a high paying job as Creative Director of a hot creative advertising agency. Everyone wanted to be me. Except me. On the outside I was the poster boy for Happy Successful Man Who Has His Whole Future Ahead of Him. But deep down inside I was miserable. I began to assault myself daily with that five word mantra. The one that so many of us begin muttering when they find themselves wandering through that unfamiliar,

60

unsettling neighborhood known as midlife. Is this all there is?” 2. Most of us lead lives today that we chose as teenagers. We need to think about whether, knowing what we know today, we want to continue on our current paths. “Tonight, I’m going to send someone to your house. He’s a teenager, about 17 or 18. He doesn’t know much about life-what teenager does?...This kid is going to completely outline and plan the second half of your life…Why should you let some teenage kid with no world experience plan the second half of your life? My answer is why did you let him plan the first half? This rut that you’re stuck in, this life that you’re trapped in, who planned it? Not you. Not the YOU you are now. Most of us form our life’s plan shortly after high school…That was my insight. I was pushing 40 and still living the dream of some teenage kid.” 3. We can make a new plan once we realize that we are stuck. Each of us can make choices today using the experiences and the self-knowledge that we have gained over the years. “That was the moment that I decided that the 40 year old me should start planning the life of the 60 year old me and beyond. I

was at the top of the ladder, and I suddenly realized I didn’t need one more rung. I wanted to find a new ladder. “ 4. Don’t give up your day job and risk everything before you have established a new career. When Marshall decided to change, he didn’t quit his job. He began to write in his free time. “My solution was to start writing on my own. Over the course of countless nights and weekends, I wrote a play… for the next 6 years I kept my day job as an advertising agency Creative Director.” 5. Stay connected with those you love and with what’s most important to you. Too often we enter a mid-life crisis and instead of finding a way to live authentically, we blame. We blame our marriages. We blame our kids. And we lose sight of what is truly most important in our lives. Marshall held onto his marriage and even after his success in business, he kept his priorities. “Many of you asked if my quest for a new career wrecked my marriage. Just the opposite. After two years, despite the fact that I was on the fast track, I left Holywood and came back to what was most important to me-my family.”
