6.

Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration.

7.

Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes.

8.

Transform stress by emphasizing positive emotions.

9.

Dry-brush your skin or try detox foot spas/foot baths to remove toxins through your pores. Special brushes are available at natural products stores.

10.

What is the most important way to detoxify? “Exercise,” says a leading expert. “Yoga or jumping-rope are good. One hour every day.” Also try Qigong, a martial-arts based exercise system that includes exercises specifically for detoxifying or cleansing, as well as many other exercises with specific health benefits.

Great People

Trees of Life At the memorial evening held in Jerusalem for one of the founding pillars of the famed Eitz Chaim Yeshiva, which produced many of today’s gedolei hadar, the Rabbi’s wife, Rebbetzin Chava Tucazinsky, spoke about her husband’s final days. In seeing how a tzaddik prepares for death, we can learn how to live our lives to its fullest.

It’s so hard to believe that thirty days have already passed since the Rabbi left This World. I still feel -- so strongly -that he is with me. I walk into the house, and I expect to feel a sense of emptiness, but it’s not empty. The walls, the ceilings, the books – they are saturated with my husband’s Torah; his Torah is still here! The Rabbi is still here! This morning, thirty days after the Rabbi’s passing, we, the entire family, went to his grave for the Memorial Service. I wanted to recite a few chapters of Psalms before beginning the Service, and opened the book at random to the verse, “Give thanks to the Lord because He is good, for His kindness endures always.” When I read those words, I felt

as if the Rabbi was speaking to me, for he was constantly quoting that verse. During the years that he was sick, there were nights that he would scream in agony, “Give thanks to the Lord because He is good, for His kindness endures always.” When I asked him about that, he pointed out that the word “always,” means in EVERY situation. When the Rabbi was first diagnosed with his illness, he had to undergo a terribly painful procedure. In the midst of excruciating pain, he asked the doctor, “Doctor, am I allowed to laugh?” He later explained his reason for being so happy, for he now understood a new aspect to that verse in Psalms: The Lord is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His deeds. “Hashem is completely right that I have to go through this pain, and even though it’s agony, it’s completely for my benefit,” he explained. So too, are all the other painful experiences that we go through in life. Every difficult thing that happens to us is a G-d sent gift. It was given with loving kindness, and although it might be extremely challenging, it’s for our benefit. During the last few years of his illness, when it was agonizingly difficult for the Rabbi to walk, he insisted on going to shul. It was a battle for him to go down the stairs. I would walk after him, carrying a chair, so that he could rest on the landing. On the street, he’d take a few steps and have to sit down before continuing. But he always told me that it was worth all that effort to be able to pray with a minyan! He would often say, “When I pray at home, my prayers

are deeper and longer, and I am able to express the meaning of each and every word. Yet that doesn’t compare to praying with a minyan!” In the last few months of the Rabbi’s life, the yeshiva sent ten boys to our house each morning, so the Rabbi wouldn’t have to leave the house to pray with a minyan. He always began praying before the boys arrived. When they’d come, they’d don their Tefillin in absolute silence because they wanted to listen to his every word. I loved to watch the Rabbi studying Torah. When he found the answer to a question that puzzled him, he would bash the table with joy. He would literally sing from happiness!

PREPARING FOR DEATH During the last two years of the Rabbi’s illness, we openly discussed the fact that since death could come at any time, we had to be prepared. We discussed everything that had to be done. About three months before his passing, he asked the children to come to the house and, stating no more than “life is very short,” he gave them instructions how to take care of many different family and community matters, both spiritual and material. Gradually, gradually, he prepared us MAGAZINE

for our parting. By Chanukah, the Rabbi was extremely weak and told me, “All my strength now lies in the spiritual realm.” Yet, although he was focused on preparing himself spiritually for the transition, he emphasized that it’s a tremendous mitzvah to guard one’s health, and continued with all the many painful treatments and did everything possible to take care of his body. Very often, the Rabbi was in too much pain to sleep at night, so he’d get up and study Torah. It was the most beautiful sound in the world! In the dark of night, I’d hear his wonderful singing as he chanted the Gemarah, and I’d remain awake to listen. The last Shabbos of his life, he mustered all his strength to pray, and then he sang Kiddush. He sang it so loudly that everyone in the entire department heard it! During the Shabbos meals, he insisted on tasting everything, l’kavod Shabbos kodesh, even though, by that point, it was extremely difficult for him to eat. At the conclusion of Shabbos, I asked him if he wanted to make havdoloh, but the son of one of the other patients insisted on doing it for us, and for the first time ever, he agreed to let a stranger make havdoloh for him. Afterwards, he asked me several times, when are WE going to make havdolah, but at the time I thought he was confused and

didn’t realize that he was referring to our imminent physical separation. Monday morning, less than 24 hours before the Rabbi passed away, he donned Tefillin, making sure, as always, that they were perfectly centered. Then he prayed in a clear voice, and his words were filled with meaning. When he finished, I helped him back into the bed, and he requested that we disturb him as little as possible, as he wants but one thing- to spend his remaining time in This World talking with G-d. That entire day he sat communicating with the Almighty, preparing himself for the coming hours.

‘‘

Toward evening, the wife of the patient in the next bed came to visit her husband, but he was too sick to respond. She was inconsolable, and sat at her husband’s bedside, sobbing, repeating over and over, “Aharon, this is Leah, your wife. Don’t you recognize me? Aharon, speak to me. Please, Aharon, speak to me,” and then she

Harav Tucazinsky, zatzal, headed Eitz Chaim for over 50 years.

burst into tears and got up to leave. As she passed the Rabbi’s bed, she automatically mumbled, “A refuah sheleima; get well soon.” The Rabbi stopped his prayers to speak with her. He blessed her, encouraged her and then continued talking with her until he saw that she was smiling. This was only hours before he passed away. After the woman left, the Rabbi blessed me, and, through me, all the children. Then he said, “I am returning home now.” I responded, “The doctors said that maybe you’ll be able to go back home on Friday,” but he persisted, “No, no! I’m returning home NOW!” I responded, “Do you know where your home is?” At this, the Rabbi laughed and said, “Where is YOUR home?” I answered, “In Achvah, with you.” Achvah is the name of our small neighborhood. Then, with incredible gentleness - a gentleness I will never forget - he said, “You go back to Achvah, the Achvah will come to me. I am going home.” I understood. He didn’t want me to be there at the end.

It was only later, when I looked up the word “Achvah” in the Shushan dictionary, did I realize what he had been alluding to. Although Achvah is usually defined as “harmony,” it can also mean, “the uncovered truth.” He was hinting to the fact that he was going home to the World of Truth. Before exiting the room, I said, “I’ll leave you in the hands of our eldest son.” “Gei gezunteheit, go in good health,” were his final words to me. I returned home. The Rabbi and our eldest son learned Torah together throughout the night. Then he made the confession and passed away with the words of the Shema on his lips. It was his father’s birthday. My husband, the Rabbi, was a living Torah. Last night, when the entire family – the children, the grandchildren, the great grandchildren, and, yes, the great-great grandchildren in their carriages – came to learn Mishnayos in his memory, it was so very obvious that he, and his Torah, will live forever. And if we follow in his footsteps, so will we.

The Risk Rabbi - Every Kid is a Kid at Risk

REFRAMING

BLAMING

BY RABBI REFOEL AND ADINA BECKER

I

f the “explosion” hasn’t happened to you, it has happened to someone near and dear—and it is a little too close for comfort! Monday, one a.m. The phone rings, jolting the father rudely out of his slumber. “Hello,” he says groggily. “Tatty, it’s me, Yitz. Listen, I just got thrown out of yeshiva.” “You what?” Instant consciousness. “What for?” “Well, I was talking in learning after night seder until really late. We were really hungry, so we snuck out after curfew, and...it was just our luck that the rosh yeshiva walked past the pizza shop and saw us there.” Father’s stomach sinks to somewhere around his ankles, held down by nauseainducing anchors. My son, thrown out of yeshiva? My intelligent, independent son, who loves to learn, who has firm yiras Shamayim, can’t make it in yeshiva? As he struggles to maintain his equilibrium, five trains of thought run on parallel tracks in his brain, wrench his insides and grip his heart in a vise. 1. What kind of a parent are you? (Blame) 2. What kind of an idiot did I

28

raise? (Blame) 3. The rosh yeshiva is destroying my son. (Blame) 4. I am a failure and my child is a failure. (Shame) 5. This isn’t supposed to happen in families like mine. (Shame) In twelve years of working with kids at risk, one of the greatest obstacles that we have encountered is the tendency for children, parents and well-meaning onlookers to play the blame game and thereby deflect and derail dealing with the situation. We have thus chosen to reframe the blame game before delineating any of the other factors affecting youth of today. By breaking down this obstacle, we will all be better equipped to deal with the challenges life throws us, thereby lifting up those sinking stomachs and clearing those befuddled brains.

The Fault Line Blaming is a natural reaction to a significantly negative event or experience. It permits the victim, those closest to him and the onlooker to escape into the comfort zone of denial. Finding a culprit makes sense of the state of affairs. If we can decide that

www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

someone or something specific is at fault: 1. The child, parent or educator won’t feel obligated to deal with his or her situation if the responsibility lies elsewhere. 2. The onlooker is comforted that the phenomena are explicable, predictable and less of a threat to him and his or her family. Blaming oneself is also counterproductive, since this blame comes from those gnawing feelings of shame and guilt. Self-assigning oneself as the “culprit” can be so overwhelming and guilt inducing that he or she will be paralyzed from taking any reparative action. Since blaming is generated by fear, fury and guilt, the choice of culprit will not be based on logic and a thorough understanding of the situation. The yetzer hara has won before he has started by simply deflecting us from addressing the real issues at hand. Since we are now working “offline,” as it were, there is no connectivity—to ourselves, our families and to the situation. Refraining from assigning blame, however, causes the onlooker to revisit that terrifying reality once more. How are we to make sense of children who were MAGAZINE

“Tatty, it’s me, Yitz. Listen, I just got thrown out of yeshiva.” “You what?” raised in excellent homes, provided with a Torah-true education and insulated from spiritual dangers, choosing to disconnect from the emes? And how can we be sure it won’t happen to our family?

And the Reality Is… It can happen to anyone. Professionals have identified factors that can increase the likelihood of disconnection, yet they are contributing factors, not the cause itself. For all kids are kids at risk. Each individual is born with his or her set of particular challenges that can endanger their spiritual progress at different stages of their lives. The child, parent and educator are not the cause of these set of challenges. Yet it is their acceptance of and attitude to dealing with these challenges that will affect whether the child is on the fringe or wearing the fringes! Shlomo and Shira Korman felt they had been thrown a curveball when their son Naftali was born. Although their names have been changed, every community knows families like the Kormans. Their home is a bastion of shalom bayis, Torah-true values and simchah. Guests at their Shabbos table are amazed at how the parents focus on their children at each seudah, with plenty of interesting stories and inspiring divrei Torah. Their first four children were unending sources of nachas, respectful yet lively, studious yet fun. They were a credit to their parents’ chinuch. When Naftali was born, the equation changed. Hypersensitive to imagined insults, prone to tantrums, and allergic to authority, he was tested by the best child psychologists and was not diagnosed with any particular disorder. He was just a difficult, high-strung child—and, due to his nature, he was prone to taking offence to attempts by his rebbes to

MAGAZINE

mechanech him. He was not a product of bad chinuch. However, had his parents and teachers blamed him and punished him constantly for behavior that he was not capable for controlling as a child, he could well have been a product of bad chinuch. Mrs. Korman consulted with a prominent child psychologist, who also happened to be a neighbor. He freed her from playing the blame game, informing her that her son’s difficulties were Divinely bestowed, and not a result of her parenting or his defiance. We watched the Kormans exert an almost superhuman effort in dealing with their son. They learned to diffuse tantrums before they occurred, they taught him gradually to be aware of inappropriate behavior, and they worked closely with his rebbes and principal to ensure that he coped at school. Naftali is today a baal aliyah. He attends a small, non-pressured warm mesivta and his parents continue to monitor his progress closely. Every home has a Naftali, or at least one child who has a harder time navigating the vicissitudes of life, at one particular time or throughout their lives.

in and pressing start! Having removed the obstacle of blame, we are now free to concentrate on identifying those coordinates, which we shall, b’ezras Hashem, address in the next issue. Rabbi Refoel Becker has been working with troubled teens for the past twelve years, as a teacher, mentor, counselor and rosh yeshiva. He founded Yeshivas Ohr Aharon for yeshiva-ketanah aged boys; Nishmas Refoel Beis Medrash, a vocational training and job referral program; and a preventative program in elementary schools. Adina Becker is a writer, teacher and counselor. She focuses on reinspiring children and teenagers in their Yiddishkeit. To that end she has published two children’s books to make the Shabbos table more appealing: Parashah Pointers (Hamodia Publishing, 2007) and Adventures with the Rubinsteins (Targum Press, 2011).

The GPS Coordinates If life in this world is merely a corridor (Avos 4:21), it follows that we are in a perpetual state of motion, of transience. While we are still breathing, we are all “on the derech,” or more particularly, “on our own unique derech.” The GPS system was invented to aid travelers in reaching their destination. Regardless of its technological capabilities, the GPS is useless without programming in the coordinates of where we are and our ultimate destination. Where we are—and where we need to get to. Chinuch is all about identifying those coordinates, programming them

1000’S JOINING (FOR FREE) BAAL SHEM TOV’S YAHRTZEIT TEFILLAH ON DAY OF SEGULAH (104) OF EREV SHAVUOS IN MEZHIBUZH THROUGH YAD L’ACHIM A

dmor of Makova shlit”a to lead delegation through Yad L’Achim to assist in Pidyon Shvuyim This Friday is the day of Tefillah for Erev Shavuos and the yahrtzeit of the Baal Shem Tov Hakadosh. Due to the demand of thousands, Yad L’Achim has once again arranged the special tefillah to take place on this holy day. The holy Admor of Makova shlit”a will lead a delegation of a minyan of talmidei chachamim in tefillah at the hold resting place of the Baal Shem Tov Hakadosh in Mezibuzh, Ukraine for all those who participate in the great mitzvah of Pidyon Shvuyim through Yad L’Achim. Tefilla requests can be for Shidduchim, Parnassah, Shalom Bayis, Children, Health and all personal requests. Yad L’Achim has received numerous phone calls from people who received their Yeshua after last year’s tefillah. While names for tefillah can be given with no minimum donation, Erev Shavuos has the extra element of the renowned segulah of Rav Chaim Palagi zt”l of 104. The renowned tsaddik and mekubal Rav Chaim Palagi wrote that great reward await those who donate multiples of 104 (in their current currency) to assist those in need. In the United States that translates to a donation of $104 which can be given from maaser. Your tzedaka will assist Yad L’Achim in the great mitzvah of Pidyon Shvuyim, helping to rescue Jewish women and children trapped in Arab Villages. Today hundreds of boys and girls are learning in Yeshivos and girls’ school because of your support.

water crystals: crystals: water

Crystal Clear ESTHER LICHTIG

In 1988, the scientific world was rocked by one of the most controversial research papers ever published in the highlyrespected journal, Nature. French Immunologist, Jaques Beneviste, conducted an experiment to measure allergic reactions using water. He diluted a small amount of human antibodies into a large amount of water. The ratio of antibodies to water was so miniscule that it seemed virtually impossible for any trace of them to remain. To his surprise, however, Benveniste found that the water contained a definite memory of their presence. This memory was so concentrated that it could even be transmitted further. Benveniste felt that his findings, if accurate, could have enormous ramifications for mankind. Especially since the human body is made up of mostly water. The results could also

40

prove that homeopathy, which uses very diluted amounts of herbs, may very well be effective in healing. This fact caused Beneveniste to endure much criticism in his time and he spent the next years unsuccessfully trying to regain his tarnished reputation in a scientific community that vehemently rejected the validity or potency of homeopathy. The journal agreed to publish the paper only with an attached disclaimer regarding its credibility and skeptical scientists were unable to prove or disprove his theories. His work may have been forgotten if not for another researcher named Dr. Masaru Emoto. Dr. Masaru Emoto is a Japanese doctor of Alternative Medicine who gained international acclaim in 1999 following a series of books he published entitled Messages from Water. His books (that have sold over one million copies in twenty languages) contain a stunning array of photographed water crystals, which he maintains were formed when positive, concentrated thoughts were directed at them while they were still water droplets. Dr. Emoto found that when frozen, clear spring water and water that had been exposed to loving words transformed into dazzling, intricate crystals similar to snowflakes. While polluted water or water exposed to negative thoughts took on lop-sided and lifeless looking forms. He then took his research even further by playing music to water droplets. He was stunned to discover an undeniable correlation between the quality and type of music being played and the water’s final crystallized form. Water that had been “entertained” by soothing classical music such as Beethoven’s 5th Symphony crystallized into magnificent formations while droplets exposed to “heavy metal” music were clearly unsightly and chaotic. As a medical researcher specializing in alternative medicine, Dr. Emoto’s aim was to prove that since human beings and the earth at large are composed mostly of water, we can directly

impact the earth and our personal health with positive thoughts and words. We Jews don’t need Benveniste or Emoto to substantiate that which the Torah has already taught us; that every action and thought has an effect on the world. Dr. Emoto would probably be fascinated to discover that the passuk in Mishlei uses water to describe the effect people have on one another: ‘ke’mayim hapanim l’panim kein lev h’adam l’adam – as a face reflects a face in water so does one man’s heart to another.” Clearly, thoughts and feelings, even those that are never expressed, give off vibes and significantly affect the world around us. As human beings we are endowed with the ability to speak as well as think. We may not realize the power that we have in our hands to change the world for better or for worse. The power and energy of our words and thoughts inevitably set off a chain reaction. They do not just disappear into the

atmosphere; they trigger either positive or negative energy in both the physical and spiritual realms. So how do we ensure that our hearts constantly contain only serenity and positivity so that our effect on the world will remain positive? To do this we must take responsibility and change ourselves! Chaya Hinda Allen, founder of JPThink – Jewish Positive Thinking, says that in order to change the way we think we first have to work on changing the way we feel. That is to say, our body and mind must be relaxed. This allows our conscious mind to move out of the way so that the positivity and serenity can penetrate the unconscious. Only then will we be able to internalize the messages we want to tell ourselves.

MAGAZINE

We can relax our bodies in a number of ways, but to relax our minds she advises constantly repeating the following affirmation statements during daily relaxation exercises: • • • • •

Hashem is One, He fills our every need, He protects us and our families, I choose good over evil, And very importantly, I have self worth.

Chaya Hinda uses these affirmation statements as the foundation of her workshops. Only when our minds are relaxed, can we replace negative thoughts with positive ones. She notes that most of our negative thoughts are products of our imagination and the belief that our present reality cannot be changed. Nothing could be further from the truth. Once we deeply internalize our belief that Hashem is in control

crystal from water exposed to the words “you make me sick”

crystal from water exposed to the words “thank you”

of the world, we will also truly believe that our financial status, health, familial tension or any other problem can be vanquished by the Almighty at any time. Repeating positive affirmations of our belief enable this to occur on a deep level. This subconscious acceptance of the affirmations will also allow us to let go and regain the ability to forgive others and most importantly to forgive ourselves. We can then rid ourselves of bad memories and move into the realm of positive thoughts. While we may not have the ability to control the thoughts that enter our mind, we can certainly choose which ones to hold on to and which to banish. Once free of all this negativity, we can go on to become positive human beings who are less judgmental, appreciative,

accepting and loving - truly fun people to be around! There are deep spiritual implications of this as well. The Torah gives us a whole host of mitzvos that affect the world and ourselves in a spiritual way, sometimes visibly and sometimes not. Take for example the saying of brachos. The seforim have told us that thanking Hashem for the food He has given us actually brings the food to its spiritual completion. In fact, there are numerous examples in the Torah of how either speech or thought can change the status of a person or item forever. Just the verbal dedication of an animal for a korban

elevates the animal so that it can never, ever, become just one of the flock again. Similarly when it comes to bringing bikurim or making a neder, once the words have been uttered the entire status of the item has changed forever. And the words kadsheinu b’mitzvosecha – sanctify us with Your mitzvos, teach us that by doing mitzvos we actually transform ourselves. Since we are in essence a combination of body and soul we can choose to be either more physical or more spiritual by the way we choose to live our lives. Rabbi Aaron Kotler tells us to observe the tzaddikim around us. He notes that they are so elevated that even their bodies gravitate to holiness. While they may have been born with the same strengths and weaknesses as the rest of us, their consistent spiritual behavior actually changed the essence of who they are. Learning about the water crystals has both crystallized (pun intended) and concretized the idea for me that has always been a bit elusive: that each mitzvah I do causes a transformation in the world as intricate as the water crystal created by playing Beethoven’s 5th symphony. Just looking at the formation created by the words “love and appreciation” makes me wonder at how awesome thinking and showing appreciation must look in the spiritual and physical world. If we would contemplate how much purity just one bracha with kavanah must bring into the world and picture it in crystal form it will change the way we do mitzvos forever!

Marinated Fish Skewers with Lemony Zucchini Fingers Broiled fish and vegetables pair well to offer a delightful entrÊe to enhance your Yom Tov meal. INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 lbs firm fish (salmon, sea bass, halibut, snapper). Feel free to double the recipe for a bigger crowd 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 3 Tbs fresh minced cilantro (you may sub fresh/ minced parsley) 2 garlic cloves crushed 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp cumin 1/4 tsp turmeric 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper Sliced lemon wedges Chopped cilantro for garnish (if desired) DIRECTIONS Cut the fish into 1 ½ inch chunks for skewering. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, cilantro, crushed garlic, paprika, salt, cumin, turmeric, and cayenne pepper. Place fish chunks in a glass dish. Pour marinade over the fish chunks and stir to coat. Cover with plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator and let the fish marinate for 30 minutes. If using wood skewers, soak them in water while the fish is marinating. This will keep them from burning on the grill. Preheat your grill or oven. Skewer the fish chunks, evenly divided between four wooden skewers. Generously grease the grill or oven pan. Place the skewers on the grill-oven and cook for about 10 minutes total, turning once during cooking, till the edges are browned and the fish is cooked through. Garnish with chopped cilantro, if desired. Serve with sliced lemon wedges. These go great with any homemade dip such as mayonnaise or chraionnaise.
