Kiruv

“Know What to

Answer... With thanks to Project Inspire of AISH.COM

You can make a differenceand it helps if you’re prepared. An everyday interaction with a Jew who’s far from, yet curious about, Torah observance, can ignite his neshamah and inspire him to find out more. And even if you don’t have a ready answer, a warm smile, a “thank you” for the question, and a promise to follow up, will go a long way.

Q

I’m in my thirties, and many of my friends who married are now divorced. I’d like to marry, but I want to make sure it’s the right person. Does Judaism have any guidelines to offer?

A

When our forefather Abraham needed to look for a wife for his son, Isaac, he sent his trusted servant, Eliezer, to find the right woman. Eliezer asked for God’s help in finding the right person, and devised a test: He will ask for water, and if the woman replies that she’ll give not only him, but also his camels, then he’ll know she’s the one (Genesis 24:10-14). Eliezer wasn’t just looking for someone nice. Nice people are polite and inoffensive. Nice is an important attribute for a waiter or a cleaning lady. But being kind is something else entirely. Someone kind truly cares about you – what your preferences are, what’s good for you. You can’t build a successful marriage with someone who isn’t kind. Another thing that’s so important is sharing goals. A goal is more than buying a new house or getting a promotion. A real goal is something that you’d like written on your tombstone. Two people living together with different goals in life is a recipe for disaster.

Q A

I have a question about prayer. Should we just be praying that God bring peace to the world, heal the sick etc.? Or is it also okay to ask for things I need personally? I mean, who am I to ask? This is a great question, and one that the greatest minds have dealt with!

Of course it’s wonderful that you care about others and don’t just consider your own personal needs. God definitely wants to hear our prayers for the whole Jewish nation and the whole world, too. But He also wants to hear your prayers for your own individual needs, and you certainly shouldn’t feel that you have no right to ask.

Firstly, from the perspective of an infinite being, there’s really no difference between a blade of grass and the Himalayas. To God, both are significant – otherwise, He wouldn’t have created them. Furthermore, when you pray to God for your own needs, it’s like proclaiming your belief that He is running your life, down to the tiniest details. This is an incredible statement of faith. The biggest philosophers denied that God is involved in our everyday lives, but that’s not what our Torah says. The history of our People is made up of God’s constant intervention in our lives. In fact, most of us will be able to recount occasions in their own lives when they truly saw that God was orchestrating things – what we might otherwise be tempted to call coincidences. The ideal relationship between each Jew and God is one of love. One of the reasons why we are created with parents is to give us some idea of how we should relate to God, and how He relates to us. If your loving father is standing right next to you – as the Torah teaches: God is everywhere – then you’ll certainly want to be talking to him, asking him for whatever you need, thanking him for what he gave you already… you’d be stupid not to! God wants us to be close to Him, and feeling that closeness is the greatest pleasure imaginable.

Q

I have three kids, and when they misbehave, I want to discipline them. But I worry that I could damage their self-esteem. What does the Torah say about disciplining with love?

A

Before he died, our forefather Jacob (Yaakov Avinu) blessed his children. The strengths and weaknesses of the various children define the character of each of the Twelve Tribes. Together, these tribes make up the nation of Israel. Here is what he tells Shimon and Levi: “Cursed is your anger, because it is strong” (Genesis 49:7). Though your passion for justice is praiseworthy, emotions can overwhelm your judgment. Jacob doesn’t curse Shimon and Levi directly. He curses their anger. It’s a parent’s responsibility to help children grow by correcting their mistakes. But when you rebuke them, be careful to emphasize that you love them. It’s just their behavior you don’t like. In proper measure, spice adds flavor. In excess, it mars the dish. Similarly, the influence of zealousness is best diffused. When the Land of Israel is later divided among the tribes, Levi receives no portion. Instead, his tribe is scattered throughout the Land, diffusing his influence throughout the nation.

Q A

Can I use an electric menorah with bulbs for Chanukah?

We don’t use an electric menorah for Chanukah, as it burns in a totally different way from the oil and wick lights in the Temple that we are commemorating. Some authorities do allow using an electric menorah, but only if there really is no other option, and only if it’s obvious that you are lighting this menorah specially for Chanukah. But even then you may not recite the blessings, as most authorities say this is not the valid way to fulfill the mitzvah. There are many beautiful and deep meanings behind using oil and wicks (or candles) to light the Chanukah flames, just as all of the Torah’s commandments have deep significance to them. This is the perfect time of year to en“light”en yourself!

Shimon, tradition tells us, was the tribe of teachers, who also fanned out across the country to educate our children. The character trait of passion for justice is valuable in an educator, but again, it must be sweetened with love. MAGAZINE

Shalom Bayis

By R Levy

Looking out for number one

one of the Secrets

of Shalom bayis As the common saying goes, “Opposites attract.” You may or may not agree, depending on your particular set of life experiences, but when it comes to marriage, there are two ways to look at this statement. OppOsites

attract

On sOme level, this must be

true, otherwise, people would never get married at all. But… they are still opposites. Men are different from women in almost every respect, and this is certainly no accident. It is told in the name of the Rebbe Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk zy”a that if husband and wife were not total opposites, it would be impossible for them to bring children into the world. Nonetheless, it still looks like a recipe for disaster, and this is actually what the Torah teaches us. The famous Midrash ( parashas Vayetzei) tells of a wealthy lady who came to Rabi Yosi bar Chalafta and demanded to know what God has been doing since He created the world. When she heard that He was “only” busy with making shidduchim, she decided to try her hand at it, too – and the results were catastrophic. None of the couples she paired managed to survive more than a day of married life together. One might think that Hakadosh Baruch Hu, knowing as He does the natures of all His creations, would have far greater success in matching people who are compatible with one another.

30

But this is not what we see. Rather, the same Midrash continues with Rabi Yosi agreeing with the lady that making shidduchim is exceedingly difficult, and that therefore, God “pairs them against their will, not by their own choices…” It’s certainly possible for God to pair up like-minded individuals – why would He choose not to? The Midrash concludes: “Those who choose to sing in joy and appreciation do so; those who choose not to sing, cry instead…” What does this come to tell us?

****

Did you ever see a chassan and kallah arguing under the chuppah? Most likely not – any minor disagreements were surely ironed out beforehand, and major disagreements would probably have led to the engagement being called off. Did you ever see a husband and wife arguing? What happened? Oh – you’re not as compatible as you thought you were? Where was the seichel to realize this, before you got married?

www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

MAGAZINE

It would seem that Hakadosh Baruch Hu specially engineered matters- set up an elaborate smokescreen, so to speakto get two totally different people to somehow agree to spend the rest of their lives together. Just knowing this fact is going to help you get over the first hurdle, namely, the “Is he/she really my bashert?” question that is likely to pop up very quickly. The answer to this question is “Yes”with the proviso that bashert doesn’t necessarily mean what you thought it did. It certainly doesn’t mean that you will see eye to eye on everything, or even on most things. Of course you both have to be committed to a Torah lifestyle within broad parameters, but, sometimes shockingly, the similarities often stop there. Nonetheless, you are meant to be married to each other – there was no mistake. You weren’t stupid, or crazy, or bamboozled into marriage. You don’t even have to feel guilty that there is friction. And there is certainly nobody “out there” who would have made better marriage material for you. NoHakadosh Baruch Hu “paired you against your will.” He knew what He was doing – soon, b’ezras Hashem, will you.

****

The fact that we need to submit to a certain amount of deception in order to marry is actually not such a bad sign. Animals find their partners quite naturally and have no need for the institution of marriage to ensure the survival of the species. For Jews, however, marriage is not a matter of convenience. Neither is it the instinctive response of “We get along so well; let’s get married.” Rather, marriage is something holy, something very precious, something to be strived towards. The number of obstacles along the road to marital harmony only serve to highlight the great value of shalom bayis. We don’t get married because we want to get married – we get married because we need to be married. We need to gain something from being

married that we couldn’t possibly attain without it – and that something is: ourselves. Ask a non-Jew, “What does marriage start with?” and you will probably hear the answer, “Love.” Pointing out that marriages based on emotional love, especially in today’s world, tend to collapse into divorce pretty quickly, is unlikely to have any influence on the marrying couple. Most of the Western world long ago accepted that marriage will last as long as the emotions behind it do, and when they fizzle out, it’s time to leave. No hard feelings… This attitude is of course anathema to us. So, what is marriage based on? The right answer is: commitment. Commitment to your spouse, to build a home together; and, commitment to oneself. A mature adult does not enter into any commitment lightly, but intends and plans to be able to honor his word, regardless of almost all changes in circumstance. It is the privilege of an adult to be able to enter into a marriage or make any other oath. It should be a matter of honor, of self-esteem, to keep one’s word even when it’s a challenge to do so. This explains why marriage means so much more than doing what your spouse asks you to do, even with a smiling face. That is being committed to the other person; being committed to yourself, however, entails doing what is required for the marriage, even without being asked to do so. Even if the other person is mevater, or unaware of a need,

your actions, expect to have a stormy ride. Of course, emotions don’t just include the basic, “Right now, I’m just not in the mood” to do whatever needs to be done. They also incorporate, “What! After what he did yesterday? After what she said this morning?” Remember: You are committed to yourself. You too are flawed. You too have faults that you would rather other people forgot about, or ignored. If you believe in yourself as a person who can build a compassionate marriage, then do it – don’t wait for the other person to start.

****

“Those who choose to sing in joy and appreciation do so; those who choose not to sing, cry instead…” In many cases, despite the best efforts of husband or wife, the other spouse is simply not sufficiently invested in the marriage. How can the hard-working, determined spouse be expected to sing in joy when they see their work being either ignored, invalidated, or even sabotaged? Is this not a tragedy? On one level, the tragedy is undeniable. “If only…” tells us that things could have been so much better, so much more harmonious and productive. But only one of the partners has really lost the opportunity to build an everlasting edifice – not the one who tried and “failed” but rather the one who never tried at all. Marriage is an opportunity to build ourselves – regardless of the outcome, which is, as in all other matters, in Hashem’s hands. Surrendering our hopes and expectations is probably one of the hardest things for a striving human being to do – but if we do not wish to succumb to despair, we must learn this lesson. Then, and only then, will we be able to see the joy and appreciation- the joy of building ourselves through adverse circumstances, and the appreciation for being given the opportunity to do so. And then daven that your spouse will merit to do so, too.

the number of obstacles along the road to marital harmony only serve to highlight the great value of shalom bayis.

MAGAZINE

or does not expect it of you, it should still be a matter of honor for you to do the right thing – no matter how you feel. If your emotions are your guide to

True-Life

I

learned a lot about marriage from my first chavrusa. Shmuel and I were opposites in so many ways. He was from England, for one. He was logical, and intellectual, and became frum after hearing rational proofs of the Torah’s Divine origin at Yeshivas Aish HaTorah. He was also a misnaged. I, on the other hand, am American, and also emotional and passionate, and became frum without hearing a single proof – and I was initially attracted to Chassidus. We used to argue day and night, inside the beis medrash and out, but in the process, we grew much closer to each other and to Hashem. We challenged each other and forced one another to examine ourselves deeply and honestly. An ideal chavrusa partnership! And in many ways, the role of a wife is quite similar – she is called an ezer k’negdo – an “opposite helpmate” to challenge you to grow in the greatest way possible. Marriage is the best “tool” for improving your middos, and there’s no better training ground for marriage than a chavrusa!

“If that’s how insensitive and self-centered he is, what kind of husband will he make?”

Nonetheless, after our year together, we parted ways. I returned to the States, headed for a yeshivah in New York, and Shmuel remained in Eretz Yisrael. We kept in touch now and again. He called me after 9/11 to make sure my family and I were okay. I called him before Yom Tov. We remained friends. At a later point, somewhat surprisingly, I enrolled in a regular litvish yeshivah – and Shmuel discovered a small chassidish yeshivah for English speakers. We had balanced out. Whenever we spoke over the next few years, Shmuel told me about how great his new yeshivah was. The rabbanim gave him personal guidance to prepare him for marriage, and he felt that the yeshivah was solidifying his hashkafah, middos, and selfesteem, in addition to the learning. Meanwhile, I was devoting myself intensively to my learning, but I still felt very much adrift in my personal life. My rebbeim told me I should start dating, but each time I went out with a girl, I realized I lacked clarity on what I wanted in life. I was confused, and felt totally alone – and not at all ready for marriage. Nonetheless, I was sure that as soon as I got myself sorted out, I would meet the right person for me. That winter, I heard about a company offering cheap flights to Eretz Yisrael, and I decided to visit my friend. It had been over three years since we had last seen each other, and I needed a little chizuk. My ulterior motive was to check out his yeshivah, although I didn’t openly admit it to anyone – or myself, for that matter. I traveled around Eretz Yisrael for a week, and then spent a few days with Shmuel. Now his peyos and beard were long – mine were short and trimmed. But we still had a lot in common, and we spent long hours talking and reestablishing our relationship. During my visit, Shmuel started dating the girl who would eventually become

his wife. A few weeks later, when I was already back in the States, he called me with the news, and invited me to be his shomer before the chasunah, which would be at the beginning of the summer. I decided to go, and then spend the rest of the summer learning at his yeshivah in Eretz Yisrael, in order to get back in touch with my chassidish leanings, and hopefully find some direction in life before starting to date again. It worked out great – I enjoyed it so much that I decided to stay on, forgoing my flight home. Shmuel helped me get adjusted to life in Eretz Yisrael, and his new wife was happy to provide me with homecooked meals from time to time. He even gave me his old, prehistoric cell phone, now that he had moved up in the world, although I never quite worked it out. The battery used to die unexpectedly after a few minutes, and I never figured out how to change his old voice message: “Hi, you’ve got through to Shmuel…” Thanks to the personal attention of the rabbanim at the yeshivah, I worked through a lot of my issues in hashkafah and was soon able to start dating. I immediately hit it off with the first girl who was redt to me. She was sweet, quiet, and reserved – just the opposite of me! During the first date, I already knew that something

was special. I simply felt so ready to get married that I was confident that Hashem was about to send me the right person – and she was everything that I was looking for. After the first few dates, things were going well, and we decided that from then on, I would call her directly, rather than going through the shadchan. We went to the zoo on our next date. On the way home, we boarded a city bus. I hadn’t yet been in Yerushalayim for so long, and this was one of the first times I’d traveled on the buses there. Thinking that this would be the most tzniusdig arrangement, I decided to sit opposite her – and I chose the forward-facing seat, leaving the back-facing seat for her. Little did I know how nauseating this can be, to ride a bus backwards. In New York, the seats either face forward or sideways. My date found my choice of seating to be downright inconsiderate, and immediately after getting home, she called the shadchan to tell her so. “How could he take the forward-facing seat, and make me sit backwards to get dizzy?” she asked. “If that’s how insensitive and self-centered he is, what kind of husband will he make?” Then and there, she decided to call it off, and she insisted that the shadchan tell me so immediately.

dead, there was no answer, just the voice mail – and the shadchan was puzzled to hear a British accent: “Hi, you’ve got through to Shmuel…” Assuming she had the wrong number, she didn’t even leave a message! And before she had a chance to verify my number, I had already called to set up the next date. Later, when my future wife called her to find out what was going on, the shadchan told her to just go out with me one more time, as it wasn’t nice to break up after already arranging a meeting. The next date went smoothly, and she forgot about the incident on the bus. And the rest is history – all thanks to my good friend Shmuel!

Meanwhile, our unsuspecting hero (that’s me) had already picked up the phone to schedule the next date. Somehow, I didn’t catch the note of astonishment in her voice when she heard mine – and we fixed a time and place. But in fact, she was totally taken aback. Her words to the shadchan had been completely unambiguous. However, she was simply too nice to tell me to my face – and so she reluctantly agreed to go out with me again. Only years later, after we were already married, did I hear the inside story. What had happened? After hearing her firm decision that it was all over, the shadchan called my phone to tell me the unfortunate news. Since that phone was usually

Chanukah Shaindy Klein

A

typical Chanukah menu sounds as though it were planned by the undertwelve crowd: potato pancakes, fried, of course, in lots of oil; sweet cream-cheese rugelach; strawberryjam-filled donuts (sufganiyot) covered in powdered sugar; fried apple fritters; cheese-filled donuts fried in oil and dipped in honey; cheese blintzes; and more. Is it all just a ploy to keep kids lingering around the candles and enjoying a family meal? Not at all! Chanukah food traditions have their origins in the first years that the holiday was celebrated, and are meant to remind us of certain miracles associated with the events of Chanukah itself. And of course, remembering the miracles and the freedom that we’re all celebrating adds a special flavor to everything we serve… Why do we eat fried foods during Chanukah? Most of us are familiar with the miracle of the oil — that one day’s supply of oil lasted for eight days. And we know this is the origin of the mitzvah to light the menorah for eight days. It is also the reason why we have the custom of eating foods cooked in oil. But there are deeper connections between olive oil and Chanukah. Mystically, both the menorah and the oil used to light it are associated with chochmah, wisdom. The war between the Greeks and the Jews was also a war over whose wisdom would endure. The Greeks wanted everyone under their rule to think and study exactly as they

did. They were violently opposed to the idea of G dly wisdom, and so forbade the study of Torah. Also, the word shemen, Hebrew for oil, contains the same letters as shemoneh, eight, the number of days that the miracle of the oil lasted. So now we know the basic connection between fried foods and Chanukah. But where did all the different traditional Chanukah foods come from? Over the centuries, different Jewish communities throughout the world have found a variety of ways to incorporate both oil and dairy (due to the miracle that occurred when Yehudis, daughter of Mattisyahu the High Priest, cut off the Greek general’s head after tempting him with wine and cheese) into their Chanukah meals. One of the most famous, Israeli sufganiyot, may actually derive from a yeast dough pastry mentioned in the Talmud. These pastries were cooked in oil and called sufganin (absorbent) because they absorbed a lot of oil in cooking. They did not contain milk, but were sweetened and perhaps even filled with honey. Since they were cooked in oil, they became a Chanukah staple early on. In India, the sweet yeast dough remained primarily a flour and honey or sugar combination, but milk and butter were added as well, making the Indian version of sufganiyot also a dairy treat. In Ashkenazi communities, where olive oil was scarce and expensive, goose or chicken fat was often used for frying. Potato latkes, apple fritters, and other nondairy fried foods became the norm, although today when olive (or other pareve) oil is affordable and commonly used, dairy is often added — usually in the form of a dollop of sour cream on top.

3-dimenSional Flower Shaped FritlaCh One can’t get more traditional than serving fritlach on Chanukah. The sooner you eat these after making them, the better they are, although you might want to give them time to cool first! Ingredients: 3 eggs 5 T. sugar pinch of salt 4 T. wine 4 T. oil 2½ cups flour (more if necessary) oil for deep frying confectioners’ sugar for topping Directions: Combine eggs, sugar, salt, wine, oil and flour into a soft dough. On a floured surface, roll out the dough so that it’s paper thin. Cut out 3 circles with the floured rim of a drinking glass. Place one circle on top of the other. Press down the center of the circle with your fingers to stick all 3 circles together. Cut ½-inch slits all around, starting from the outside and cutting in towards the center, leaving approximately ½ an inch between each slit. Repeat with remaining dough. Heat oil in a frying pan for deep frying. Fry on both sides until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar. Serve fresh. Yeild: 10 Fritlach

hints & tips If making and freezing yeast dough ahead of time, wrap with plastic wrap and let rise for a minute before placing in the freezer. This will fill all the minuscule air pockets with dough, eliminating freezer burn and that “freezer taste.”

SafeTY WhIle frYINg: The Home Safety Council recommends the following precautions when frying foods:

1

Do not leave the stove unattended.

2

Turn the handles of frying pans toward the back of the stove so that children can’t reach up and grab them.

34

5

Keep dishtowels, paper goods, paper bags and curtains at least three feet away from the range when cooking. Roll up loose-fitting sleeves.

Keep hot pans, trays and foods away from the edge of the counter so children cannot reach them.

Have a safe and happy Chanukah!

doughnutS (SuFganin)

Donuts are a terrific old-fashioned treat. There are never enough to last eight days! Ingredients: 5 cups flour 1 oz. yeast 3 oz. margarine 2 T. sugar pinch of salt 1 cup water or milk 3 egg yolks 1/3 cup orange juice oil for frying Directions: Knead flour, yeast, margarine, sugar, salt, water or milk, egg yolks, and orange juice into a soft dough. Allow dough to rise in a warm place for 1 hour. On a floured surface, roll out dough to ½-inch thickness. Cut circles using the floured rim of a drinking glass or a donut cutter. Heat oil in a frying pan for deep frying and fry each circle for 2–3 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Remove donuts from oil with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil. Note: To prevent oil from burning, place 1 carrot into oil. Icing: White version: ¾ cup icing sugar 1 T. oil 3 T. boiling water (add more as needed very little at a time till desired texture) Brown version: Add 3 T. cocoa powder to the white version above Mocha version: Add 1 T. coffee granules, diluted in hot water, to the white verison above Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix by hand. Cover donuts in a variety of designs and colors. Have fun!

HealtH Not Just A Diet By Esther Dahan

artificial

SWEETENERS We know them by a variety of names – Splenda, Nutrasweet, Equal, Sweet’N Low, and more – and we know all about their claim to enhance weight loss, but are they really everything they seem?

The Not-So-Sweet Side of Sugar

Most of us, even those of us who still ingest sugar, know pretty much what’s wrong with it. It can cause weight gain, for starters. Although the 46 calories in a tablespoon of sugar in your morning coffee aren’t likely to be the major cause of you packing on the pounds, those calories add up a lot quicker when delivered by the cupful into cakes and other desserts. Many studies have indicated that a daily intake of twenty teaspoons of sugar can cause diabetes after fifteen to twenty years. Twenty teaspoons may seem like a lot, but sugar hides in many commonly eaten foods such as bread, ketchup, salad dressing – and even health foods, like rye crackers. Of course, just one giant soda will give you the whole amount in a few slurps. Furthermore, the problem is not confined to weight gain and diabetes; a wide variety of physical illnesses could be avoided or their symptoms ameliorated simply by staying away from sugar. In addition, more and more studies are suggesting a strong link between over-consumption of highsugar foods and development of mental illness – from “lowgrade” behavioral problems such as hyperactivity to fullblown disorders such as bipolar and clinical depression. Many parents and teachers can attest to the negative effects of sugar ingestion on children’s behavior, although unfortunately, far too few doctors recommend dietary changes before prescribing mind-altering medication such as Ritalin or Concerta. Or, for those who do opt to make some changes, they take a different type of pill instead…

Artificial Effects

Like most people, my introduction to artificial sweeteners was disappointing. As an image-conscious teenager, diet cola seemed like the answer to my dreams. Sweetened with saccharin, it promised the same great taste but without the calories. I tried it. It was awful… A later experiment sweetening coffee with aspartame had a different result – instead of weird-tasting sweetness it was simply bitter. Sucralose, on the other hand, tasted great in coffee and tea, but was terrible for baking; cakes fell flat – literally. Store-bought goodies made with artificial sweeteners were also a let-down; desserts just didn’t taste as good (or tasted plain awful) and those made with sugar alcohols – mannitol, maltitol, sorbitol – caused many people terrible stomach cramps. Yet in a strange desperation to have our cake and eat it, many of us continue to buy artificially sweetened products.

Weight Loss?

What’s the perfect partner to that dietetic muffin or cupcake? A tall glass of diet soda, of course… Surely the bubbles and liquid will help trick the stomack into thinking that it’s full, which will help people stick to their weight-loss plans… But it doesn’t work that way. In a recent update, the Mayo Clinic admitted that “consuming artificial sweeteners may be associated with increased weight, but the cause is not yet known.” Other studies have demonstrated a clear link between consumption of artificial sweeteners and heightened food cravings. Based on studies

conducted on rats, Susan E. Swithers of Purdue University has theorized that zero-calorie sweeteners disturb the body’s self-regulation. “Sweet” usually raises the body’s temperature, but saccharin doesn’t do that, so Swithers postulates that the body either eats more or expends less energy (slowing the metabolism) to compensate. Nonetheless, the FDA has approved artificial sweeteners – aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, acesulfame potassium – although it has also set limits for their consumption. Let’s take a closer look.

Sucralose

Sucralose was discovered by chance by British scientists back in 1976. They weren’t actually looking for a food sweetener – they were trying to develop a new pesticide… In 2008, a study conducted at Duke University showed that Splenda causes pH imbalance in rats, as well as depletion of good bacteria, swollen livers, and kidney calcification. (This was in addition to the weight gain mentioned above.) Many people report that Splenda causes them headaches or irritability.

Aspartame

Aspartame was discovered in 1965 by a chemist who was looking to invent an anti-ulcer drug. He happened to lick his finger during an experiment, and noticed that it tasted sweet. Aspartame is the most controversial of the artificial sweeteners. It contains 10% methanol which is broken down in the body to form... formaldehyde. The 2005 Soffritti study (with cooperation from the US National Toxicology Program) on rats from a cancer research center in Italy showed that levels of aspartame below those of the currently approved intake caused tumors, leukemia, and other forms of cancer. More recently, data culled over twenty-two years from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals’ Follow-Up Study – which involved over 125,00 people – showed that even one can of diet soda a day increased the incidence of leukemia in both

men and women (by 42%), and increased multiple myeloma (102%) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (31%) in men. As an aside, non-diet sodas didn’t fair much better. This same study showed a 66% increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma for those who drank sugary sodas. Acesulfame Potassium (a.k.a. Acesulfame K) This sweetener was discovered in 1967 by a German chemist who enjoyed tasting his experiments – sometimes much to his own detriment. Not many studies have been made on this sweetener. One study showed an increase in mutations of the DNA of male mice. Another showed an increase in tumors in female rats. Some claim it triggers respiratory diseases. Methylene chloride, a paint-stripper, is used in its production – and methylene chloride is also used to decaffeinate tea and coffee. But some studies show it to be safe.

Saccharin

Saccharin was discovered in 1879 by a researcher experimenting with extraction of coal tar derivatives. One of the compounds spilled on his fingers and later, when he ate supper, he noticed that his bread tasted sweeter. He managed to trace this back to the compound extracted from the coal tar and saccharin was born. 1970s studies showed increase in incidence of bladder cancer in rats fed saccharin, but the reliability of these studies was later called into question. A 2008 study showed that saccharin increases insulin production. Saccharin has been studied for the longest of all the artificial sweeteners, and it may be one of the safest of these chemicals, but its contribution to weight gain still stands.

Better Options

and weight loss discourage the use of natural sweeteners like molasses and honey. While these books admit that honey and molasses contain important nutrients, they still dismiss them due to their sugar, carbohydrates, and calories, while at the same time allowing for small amounts of artificial sweetener. A tablespoon of molasses contains 58 calories, an amount that isn’t likely to make or break a diet. More importantly, it provides 4% of one’s daily calcium needs, 5% of iron, copper, and selenium RDA, and also contains magnesium, manganese, and potassium in even larger amounts. Furthermore, molasses has a gentle laxative effect. When white sugar was too pricey, Americans used the cheaper molasses in their coffee. Though it sounds odd, molasses gives coffee a more robust flavor, in addition to added sweetness. Honey, at 64 calories a tablespoon, is also unlikely to ruin a diet from the occasional addition to a cup of tea. And because it’s sweeter than white sugar, people tend to add less, so that we’re actually only looking at around 20 calories in that cup. A tablespoon of honey provides us with 1% of our daily calcium and iron needs. It also contains antioxidants and assists with digestion. Other natural sweeteners are on the market, but are beyond the scope of this article. While neither honey nor molasses should be overeaten, studies seem to show that their moderate use is far preferable to sugar or artificial sweeteners in people with no issues that contraindicate their consumption. And of course, many people take no sweetener in their tea or coffee, or just drink goodold water… Most healthy American centenarians and nonagenarians report eating a few cookies, or a bit of pie or ice cream every week. They just don’t go overboard. This shouldn’t be news to us. As the Rambam writes, “As long as one exercises plenty, doesn’t eat until he is (overly) satisfied, and keeps his bowels soft, he will suffer no illness, and his strength will increase even if he eats unhealthy foods.”
