eeling overwhelmed by the amount of guests coming for Yom Tov? Worried about cooking and cleaning for a large group? Here’s some perspective — the Klatzko family hosts thirty guests for Shabbos on any given Shabbos — and that’s a quiet week. An average week finds between eighty and a hundred guests at their table. An above average week… I’ll leave that to your imagination. The old adage, “If there’s room in the heart there’s room in the home,” has never been truer than it is in the Klatzko house in Monsey, New York.

His ten-year-old was busy braiding some challos… about twenty-¿YH SRXQGV of them. From Meshulachim to Shabbos Guests So how did a boy from Cleveland, Ohio, and a girl from Boro Park become akin to Avraham Avinu and Sarah Imeinu? “My wife and I got this from our parents,” reflects Rabbi Benzion Klatzko. “We’re both from very large families, as well as having adopted siblings. In my parents’ house the door was always open. We constantly had poor people and meshulachim coming in and out. My mother treated them royally; she called them ‘gentlemen’ and often fed them elaborate dinners before they continued their collecting. My father would buy new shoes in all sizes. When poor people came, he would discreetly look at their shoes, and if they looked shabby he would bring them new shoes from the basement.” His in-laws, the Juravels, ran a similar establishment. The door was always open and people came to visit and then stayed, sometimes permanently. One woman, Molly, stayed for ten years. The Juravels also had a clothing gemach in their basement, discreetly titled the Juravel “Boutique.” People came to “shop” and left with new clothes, sans payment. Still, it’s a long way from that to eighty or more guests at the Shabbos table.

And when another producer won an Oscar he was convinced that it was because we davened for his success.” Rabbi Klatzko’s lack of knowledge of American celebrities was an advantage in being mekarev nonreligious Hollywood Jews. “I had no idea who many of these people were, so I wasn’t star-struck, I was

Campus Kiruv and Poolside Shiurim The Klatzkos’ evolution to mega– hachnasas orchim began early in their married life, when they lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. “We didn’t have a big house there, but we still managed to fit about thirty guests.” The Klatzkos later ended up in sunny Los Angeles, California, where they lived on the UCLA campus and did kiruv. “We met a lot of famous Jews there. I used to give a poolside shiur in Hollywood in a huge mansion that was owned by the vice

So how do you feed over a hundred guests? Enlist the help of your clearly angelic spouse and kids, of course. On the day I spoke to Rabbi Klatzko, his ten-year-old was busy braiding some challos…about twenty-five pounds of them. His seventeen-year-old daughter, Shira, is also a tremendous help. “We make it into a family activity, and everyone has a good time together.” Another major advantage is their well-

equipped kitchen. “We have three dishwashers, two refrigerators, three full-sized freezers, an industrial-sized oven, and a second regularsized oven. “The community also sometimes helps us out. The take-out place sometimes brings over cholent for our guests to have when they come on erev Shabbos.” But mostly, the Klatzkos do it all on their own with a volunteer that sometimes comes to help. Shabbos food shopping is done on Sunday, and cooking begins after that. The Klatzkos had a fire in their house a number of years ago. When they rebuilt
their house, they built it with eight bedrooms, plus what Rabbi Klatzko calls “the dorm,” which can sleep fourteen. “The rest go to the neighbors. They’re very gracious and even want to host meals as well.”

Reaching Out to All Jews What kind of kiruv can you do in Monsey? Kiruv of all kinds, says Rabbi Klatzko. “We don’t just have nonreligious Jews coming, but Jews from every walk of life. We have kids at risk, Chassidim that are off
the derech, kids with family issues who need a place to be. Singles. People in shidduchim. You name it.” The logistics necessary to host so many are mind-boggling, but Rabbi Klatzko keeps that in perspective. “Food preparation is important, but not as important as a pleasant atmosphere. Forget the time-consuming, fancy desserts and focus on your love and acceptance of other Jews,” he advises.
Beware of the Pitfalls On a practical level, how does this father

I make sure to engage them. By the third or fourth course they’re usually off playing, and then we get a nice discussion going with our guests.” What about the tznius issues that can come up when nonreligious girls come over? “I’ve found them to be very respectful,” Rabbi Klatzko says. “Even when we lived on campus, the students were respectful and sensitive to our values.”
Shabbos Match-Making Of late, Rabbi Klatzko’s activities have spread beyond his Shabbos table out into cyberspace. His recently launched website, www.Shabbat.com, is making kiruv and hachnasas orchim more user-friendly than
ever. “One of the things that FFB’s often have an issue with in doing kiruv is the fear of approaching someone who is completely uninterested and having their invitation rejected. The website takes care of that problem.” On the website people sign up to be Shabbos guests and are able to choose families who have signed up to be hosts. Hosts can also proactively look for Shabbos guests. The would-be guests provide references so hosts can verify their credentials. It’s a win/win situation for everyone. How has the response to the website been? “Unbelievable. Right now we have nearly ten thousand people registered on the site with five hundred invitations a week! And we’re just starting out!” The website offers hosts in fifty countries across the globe and has the haskamah of rabbanim such as Rabbi Hillel Weinberg of Aish HaTorah, Rabbi Noach Orlowek, and Rabbi Aharon Feldman, rosh hayeshivah of Ner Yisroel in Baltimore. In addition, many well-known personalities have registered as hosts on Shabbat.com, including Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zweibel of Agudath Yisroel and Assemblyman Dov Hikind. They’ve recently expanded the matching service to shidduchim as well and have made singles’ Shabbosos. They’ve made fourteen shidduchim so far.

Expect the Unexpected Hosting people can yield unexpected results, Rabbi Klatzko says. “We once hosted a Jewish boy who was becoming frum and asked to bring along his non-Jewish girlfriend whom he claimed wanted to convert. I was skeptical, since I’ve heard that story too many times to count. But she asked me for reading material on Judaism. I gave her a huge stack of reading, never expecting to hear back from her. Surprisingly, she kept coming back for more. She eventually converted, but broke up with the boy because he wasn’t Torahdik enough for her! She’s now married to a wonderful, ehrlich ben Torah.” So how do you know if the guests you’re hosting are actually Jewish? “The guests need to provide references, attesting to their background. But in the worst case, all you’ve done is given a non-Jew a piece of chicken.”

he little boys quickly formed a train, each with his hands on the shoulders of the boy in front of him. They lurched into motion, running madly around the periphery of the shul as throngs of men danced in concentric rings around the bima. Some of the men carried sifrei Torah, adorned in silver crowns and YHOYHW ÂżQHU\ 2WKHUV FDUULHG their small children on their shoulders. The men stomped and danced to the sound of their own hearty singing. As one song ended, another one caught on, and no one wanted to stop, despite the gabbai’s frequent request to “move things along.â€? It was Simchas Torah, and the men were not willing to let go of it. In the bustling women’s section, mothers strained to keep an eye on their young children, who dashed in and out of the circles of dancing men. Sitting among the local women was a girl name Rochel, one of a group of teenage girls who were Sukkos guests at the home of Rabbi Benzion Klatzko. Dressed in their fashionable best, the girls watched the frenetic scene with glee; this was an experience unlike any they had encountered thus far in their intrepid journey into Orthodox Judaism. They didn’t NQRZ ZKHUH WR ORRN ÂżUVW Âą DW the adorable babies that seemed to be cradled in just about every pair of female arms; at the little children clutching their candy and weaving their way comfortably through the crowd; or at the men, for whom
this date was most definitely the bursting supernova of the Jewish calendar year. To Rochel, the spirit of the night was an injection of life itself. She had never known such happiness, even in her own ostensibly Torah-observant upbringing. She sat quietly, taking in this elixir slowly, feeling it soothe her ailing soul. $OO DW RQFH DV WKH ÂżIWK hakofah came to an end, the girls’ eyes snapped into sharp focus. Their host, R’ Benzion Klatzko, stood up on a chair in front of the bima, clutching a minature sefer Torah in his hands. He had a story to tell, and the men, women and children packed into the shul were eager to hear it. Rochel strained to hear every word of the tale, for she knew that it would speak to her. “Every week, in my home, I have the privilege of hosting dozens of people for Shabbos meals. Most of them are college students who are Jewish but have never had the chance to experience a real Shabbos. They come from all kinds of backgrounds and all kinds of places across the country, and they join together at my home and get a real taste of what Shabbos is about. “The only thing is, most of them are uncomfortable about going to a shul where
everyone’s going to be in hats and jackets. They’d rather stay at my house and wait until I come home. The drawback to that is that they never have the chance to see the beauty of a real Shabbos davening. So I decided that the best thing to do would be to buy my own sefer Torah and aron kodesh for my living room. That way, I could have the davening at home, and they could take part in it and still feel comfortable. Plus, it would give many of them a chance for an aliya, some who haven’t had one since their bar mitzva. And there are those that didn’t even have a bar mitzva and have never been called up to the Torah in their lives. “The question was, how ZRXOG , HYHU ¿QG D NRVKHU sefer Torah at a decent price? And an aron kodesh would also be a big investment. So it seemed that, short of a miracle, my idea would be impossible to pull off. However Hashem doesn’t just perform miracles for you. You have to do your part and hope that Hashem will take care of the rest. “So I opened up the papers and looked around to see if anyone had a sefer Torah for sale. And believe it or not, someone did. I immediately called the number and on the other end of the phone was an elderly man from Philadelphia who said he had a very small sefer Torah that he was selling. It was 11 inches tall. “I asked him where he got it, and he told me that his father had been a rabbi of a shul in the Catskills which eventually died out. They auctioned everything off, and the sefer Torah was the only thing they kept. It had been sitting in his closet unused for 50 years, and now he felt it was time to sell that as well. “Although he wanted quite a bit of money for it and the price was a bit steep for me, I told him that I would like to take a look at it. He agreed

“I didn’t know what to say, but I certainly appreciated his incredible gift. I realized that this was a Torah that had been basically homeless for the past 50 years. There was no one to read it, hold it or keep it properly, and now Hashem gave the Torah a home, and would hopefully bring this lonely Jew back in the near future as well. “Now, what about an aron kodesh? That’s a story of its own. I found an on-line ad for an old Jewish artifact, a Jewish chest. Of Hashem was clearly guiding me. “I bought the aron and had it delivered to my home. The cross was removed and I marveled at the verse that was inscribed. I have never seen this particular verse inscribed on an aron kodesh before. And I realized that there was a message here. It was as if Hashem were saying that although this aron was lost for many years, He would never forget about it. He didn’t UHVW XQWLO LW ÂżQDOO\ ZDV EURXJKW KRPH WR Jewish hands. “My dear friends, look at what we have here. The tiny sefer Torah was in the center of it all, VRDNLQJ XS WKH RYHUĂ€RZLQJ ORYH DQG honor it had been missing for decades. It was no longer locked away, unused and untouched on this holiday meant for rejoicing. It was where it belonged, in the center of it all Later that night, Benzion brought the Torah home and secured it inside the aron kodesh in his living room. He and his family at last sat down for their seudah, which they were sharing with Rochel and her group. They had been together throughout the week of Sukkos and by this point, they had melded into a warm, comfortable family. To Rochel, the Klatzko’s open hospitality seemed like a good dream from which she would soon awaken. Wasn’t the family sick of their guests by now? If so, they certainly didn’t betray any such feelings. Instead,
Rochel felt that she and her friends were more loved and appreciated with each passing day. The girls had become like an auxiliary troop of teenage daughters, babysitting for the children and helping with the kitchen chores as if they belonged here in this wonderful home. It was not just the sense of tranquility and warmth that Rochel relished. It was the awesome, indescribable feeling of dwelling in close proximity to the sefer Torah. Each night, when the house was quiet, she had come downstairs to stand within its aura of holiness. There, she had spoken her heart to Hashem, praying that the sweetness of this home would be hers, in her own life, some day. These were WKH ¿UVW SUD\HUV KHU OLSV KDG XWWHUHG IRU many years. She could barely wait until tonight, the last night of Yom Tov, when she would take her place once more before the aron kodesh. The meal ended late, and at last, the contented but exhausted group headed to their rooms for a night’s sleep. Rochel, lay in bed, eyes wide open, with the sound of her heart beating in her ears. She waited a long time, perhaps an hour or more, until she was certain that no one in the house remained awake. She slipped out of bed and tip-toed into the living room. There stood the aron kodesh, as if it had been waiting for her. She sat down on a chair in front of the aron

HOW TO PLAY
The objective of sudoku is to enter a digit from 1 through 9 in each cell, in such a way that: Each horizontal row contains each digit exactly once Each vertical column contains each digit exactly once Each subgrid or region contains each digit exactly once
The puzzler’s job is to fill the remainder of the grid with digits –respecting, of course, the three constraints mentioned earlier.
HARD
In each sudoku puzzle, several digits have already been entered (the “givens”); these may not be changed.
