A Button’s Life

by Rabbi Yaakov Salomon

It’s not easy being a button.

F

or one thing, my home is a factory. It’s noisy, hot and crowded. Life for me and my fellow buttons is mostly dominated by waiting for the chance to connect to a suit. I was born several months ago in New Delhi. They say New Delhi is nice, but I wouldn’t know. I have spent 100% of my time in a huge crate, surrounded by “friends” of similar ilk. I simply wait...patiently or otherwise, to be put to use. So I don’t get out much. Some of my fellow buttons are much older than me. Many of them have already appeared on various jackets, or coats, or shirts and they guide us rookies who are still awaiting their initial foray into the World of the Garment. When the lights go dim in the factory each

night and the button buzz begins, I listen to the veterans tell their “war stories”– getting lost after a painful separation, cracking, or sometimes just being summarily replaced. It’s scary how one day you can be King of the Hill on a cashmere Burberry two-piece and the next day you could be kicked onto the tracks of a Brighton bound D train. I try to stay positive. The factory is busy. Every morning the tailors and seamstresses file in and do their thing. I just sit and wait and watch and hope. Will today be the day? When will I be chosen? How long must I wait, watching my friends being picked out, sewn on, and fulfilling their special purpose in life? Wow! Look at that! My friend was just affixed to a gorgeous, beige, silk chiffon evening gown. She looks so proud. I am so happy for her. She’ll go to the

nicest places and mingle with the ‘upscale’ crowd. That’s what she always wanted. Me? I’m just a dark navy, natural material, genuine horn suit button. Sometimes I wish I was a shiny brass snap, or a zinc alloy or a pewter buckle, or maybe one of those adorable, hip, pink toggles. But let’s face it. I’m not. I’m just not. That doesn’t mean I don’t have an important role to play. Yes, one day my time will come. I’m sure of it.

ONE MONTH LATER It was late one Wednesday afternoon. I had spent the day like most others…waiting. At least 30 buttons from my crate had been selected. That’s a lot of goodbyes for one day. To say I didn’t feel sad would be a lie. And then it happened. Whoosh! I felt myself lifted with a sudden burst of energy and cradled into the softest hand I could ever imagine.

“So this is what it’s like,” I mumbled to myself. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. I think I did both. I knew I’d miss my friends and my home, but at last I’d be somebody. I would have purpose, a mission. Raj, the tailor, was quick but precise. He had just finished what seemed like a wool blazer for a small boy and was preparing to adorn it with three front buttons. I waited my turn next to the sewing machine without making a sound. I watched Raj carefully place the first button on. If not for the cacophony of the machinery, the whole plant would have heard my pounding heartbeat. Raj lifted the button beside me and gently secured it in the second position – about two inches below the top button. The anticipation was overwhelming. And then… out of nowhere…it hit me! I was going to be placed in position number three! After all my waiting, after all the dreams and hopes, I was suddenly designated for the useless, barren wasteland of bottom buttonhood.

perfectly centered me to life imprisonment. Life had just begun and it was already over. I simply hung in place -- useless. What choice did I have in the matter? I endured several weeks of storage and transport and eventually made my way to a rack in a small boys’ shop in Baltimore. The customers were nice enough, The prospects for finding a warm and loving home seemed reasonable. I made peace with my “position” in life, but understood that true fulfillment would, sadly, be unattainable. One day a mother and son arrived and asked to see a blazer that totally fit my description. The lady wore fancy jewelry and expensive shoes, and the boy walked with a kind of swagger that made him look older than he probably was. I began picturing a life that might be comfortable, even lavish, albeit unrealized. I said a silent prayer, hoping that they would make me part of their family. Mom surveyed the aisle and actually took me off the hanger.

buttons one and two were in danger of popping. I, of course, was never even attempted. Sadly, I returned to my perch. Later that afternoon I noticed another mother/son tandem enter the store. This woman looked rather plain. Her clothes were neat but haphazard, and I wasn’t sure what to make of her son. His features were different than most kids. His eyes were slightly slanted upward and his nose seemed small, almost flat. His ears were small too. But his smile was beautiful. He didn’t talk much, and when he did his words were sort of garbled. Mr. Rabinowitz steered them in my direction. Again my hopes rose, but they were filled with conflict. I wasn’t sure if this was the harbor I had always dreamed of docking my ship at. Mom was checking the price tags on the jackets in the corner, but the boy seemed to be staring right at me. “Stay close to Mommy, sweetheart. You’ll get lost over there,” she beckoned.

“Try this one on, David,” she In my excitement at But Sweetheart paid finally being chosen, I One day you can be King of the Hill no heed. I felt bad for Sweetheart. He wasn’t trying to misbehave. He was just trying to be independent. Meanwhile I lay on the floor awaiting retrieval. Mr. Rabinowitz was nowhere in sight. I wondered how much time I’d have to stay on the cold floor, but not for long. Here was Sweetheart, breaking loose from his mother’s grasp and running towards me again. This time he successfully nestled the jacket in his soft hands and began to put his arms through the sleeves.

Having completed his mission, a huge grin appeared on his face. He looked absolutely adorable. With the pride of a foreign ambassador, Sweetheart marched himself over

to a nearby mirror. Mom noticed him from across the way and with familiar resignation strode towards him. She closed buttons one and two and seemed to give the possibility some serious consideration. As usual, I simply waited. She turned to find Mr. Rabinowitz and left us alone for just an instant. It was all he needed. Sweetheart took a confident gaze into the mirror and reached down to my neighborhood. I thought I would shriek from exhilaration. Sweetheart fumbled me in his sweaty palms. I thought he might yank me across the room. It took a few seconds, but it really happened. He closed me. Me! Button number three – the useless one! Mr. Rabinowitz came over and tried to teach Sweetheart proper style and etiquette. He undid me once… twice… but Sweetheart was having none of it. Mom made a few attempts too, but my new friend had his mind made up. I would not be left out. Ever. We made our way to the checkout counter, but Sweetheart and I would not part. He insisted on wearing the jacket home -buttoned: one, two, and three. Sweetheart loved that jacket and wore it whenever he could. And when he outgrew it... he just wore it anyway -- as long as he could. Yes, Sweetheart jacket.

The Tefillin Bomb The Irony Of Tefillin Threatening The Lives Of Innocent People.

by Rabbi Benjamin Blech

At first I thought the call was a prank.

T

he caller identified himself as a reporter for the Associated Press. He asked if it would be all right for a TV crew to come meet with me immediately and do an interview that would be sent to all their national affiliates. Timing was crucial, he said. The story was breaking just now and it was headline news. They really needed a rabbi for background information. “What’s it all about?” I innocently asked. “Didn’t you hear?” the reporter breathlessly responded. “A plane has been diverted on its flight from LaGuardia Airport due to a possible terrorist attack from a Jewish passenger.” Okay, I said to myself, what’s the punchline? I know that flying isn’t as safe as it used to be. I’m well aware of the shoe bomber and the underwear bomber but without overstepping the boundaries of

political correctness I realized I was missing a piece of vital information when the caller suggested that there was threat of a terrorist attack from one of our people. A Jew threatening to bring down a plane? I knew in my gut that couldn’t be true. Sure enough, it was a false alarm. The passenger who gave the crew a fright was indeed Jewish. In fact it was a young man who was religiously observant. But it turned out no one really had any reason to be afraid. The teenager only wanted to recite his morning prayers while wearing the required tefillin, the biblically commanded boxes to be placed on the arm and the head known in English as phylacteries. The first is bound round the arm seven times to indicate devotion to God for all the days of the week and then around the fingers in a manner that spells out one of the names of the Almighty. The other, on the head, is a symbol of our willingness to subject our minds to the will of the one above us. For someone who’s never seen these religious items they can

30 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

certainly appear strange. To the stewardess who alerted the captain to these foreign objects, with their unrecognizable black boxes and their unusual attached strings, they represented a potential danger strong enough to warrant the plane making a forced landing in Philadelphia to be welcomed by FBI agents, the police and the fire department. Remarkably enough on a flight from New York City, one of the major Jewish population centers in the world, not one person on board had ever seen tefillin, or could vouch for their authenticity as a mitzvah rather than a menace! So the Associated Press came to ask me about this ritual which I explained has been around for more than 3000 years. While the Pilgrim fathers who were all extremely conversant with the Bible would surely have known the meaning and the makeup of these phylacteries, meant to afford a measure of spiritual protection to its wearers, our contemporary guardians of national security unfortunately had no idea of this

Torah law. At least, I thought to myself, the one good thing to come out of this unfortunate incident that inconvenienced unwary passengers and temporarily mistook a pious Jew for a terrorist was the Godgiven opportunity to explain a mitzvah to a national audience on TV. Yet in retrospect I can’t help but reflect on the irony that of all ritual objects it was tefillin that caused the crew to suspect a threat that would endanger the lives of innocent people. After all, it is this very mitzvah that on a more profound level speaks to the issue that represents the greatest challenge today to the civilized world. The tefillin is a ritual item comprised of two parts. In its own way it symbolically says that our devotion to God consists of a dual commitment. It is an idea that has a remarkable precedent in the 10 Commandments when God gave the fundamental moral laws for all mankind not on one but on two separate tablets.

172 words of the Decalogue. The reason, as explained by the rabbis, is that this allowed God to introduce what many theologians have called perhaps the most important idea promulgated by Judaism, the most powerful innovation in the realm of religious thought. Religion, this division of the tablets means to teach us, is concerned not only with the way in which mankind is meant to relate to God but also the way in which people are meant to treat each other. There are two tablets with five Commandments on each. The first five reflect upon our duties to God, the last five concern themselves with proper behavior towards our fellow man. And it is both of these categories that are indivisibly included when we speak of religion!

To accept only one of these categories as the definition of our striving for spiritual perfection is to be guilty of nothing less than religious schizophrenia. As many contemporary theologians and philosophers have pointed out, the greatest danger to Western civilization today comes from those who in the name of God are willing to murder innocents, and to use suicide bombers as missiles to massacre civilians in a perverted attempt to glorify the Almighty. The two tablets stand as irrefutable testaments to the sacredness of both God and man, the Creator and his creations, the One in the heavens above and all those representing his divine image below.

Why were these laws not written on one and the same tablet? Surely it was not for considerations of space. God could have made one tablet large enough to contain all

It was Cotton Mather, the famous Puritan preacher of colonial American times, who put it well when he once pithily said, “Woe unto those who pray unto the Lord on Sundays and prey on their fellow man throughout the rest of the week. What was the source of his insight? The very point we see so clearly embedded in the structure of the 10 Commandments inscribed by God on the two different tablets of stone.

And where else other than in the two tablets is this message repeated, indeed on a daily basis? Of course in the very mitzvah of tefillin. The box to be placed on our head symbolizes our aspirations to be connected with the one above. It corresponds to the first tablet and all of its injunctions relating to our responsibilities to God. The box we are taught to place on our arm with the strings wound round our hand remind us to reach out to others, to

Hello Everyone, I usually tell my patients that I’m like a farmer. I can plant the seeds, add some fertilizer, and make sure there’s enough sunlight. But I can’t make the plant grow! The same is true in giving chiropractic adjustments. I can adjust the spine, tune the nervous system, and make sure you are getting proper nutrition. But I can’t heal you! Once your body is restored to as close to a perfect state as is possible, the power that created the body can heal the body. The potential for healing is increased. But the healing itself ALWAYS comes from our Creator. Listen to this story.

A

ϔ week, who was at the end of her pregnancy. In fact, she was two weeks overdue. The midwife said that the baby was already large, but they would give it some more time to see if she would be able to give birth naturally without having to induce her. I adjusted her spine making sure all the nerve channels were open. I then evaluated the uterine muscles by external palpation to make sure there were no spasms Ǥ ϔ ǡ stimulated precise acupuncture points to get the labor going.

She called me that same afternoon saying that her contractions “are becoming stronger”. I told her to come back for a second adjustment the same day to help it along. We repeated the same procedure that evening, and I got an email from her midwive Yetty the very next day wishing us all a Mazal Tov! She had her baby an hour and a half later. How many times have I seen this exact same scenario, that the doctors want to do caesarean, or induce prematurely? I can’t say that this procedure is 100% effective in all cases, but more times than not, we get Ǥ ϐ from chiropractic care during pregnancy for situations like this as well as helping the baby turn from a breach position, in addition to basic pregnancy related back pains. I have been a chiropractor for 33 years, and these Chiropractic Miracles continue to inspire me every single time. Why? Because this gives me a chance to witness the Miracle of Life! Until next time...... To Your Health, Dr. Stanley I. Miller, D.C.

&KRFRODWH =XFFKLQL &DNH 6HUYHV Barley, one of the seven species, is always good in a hearty winter soup. ‡ 1 1/2 cups flour, plus more for the pan ‡ 1/2 cup plus 1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips ‡ 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder ‡ 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt ‡ 1/2 teaspoon baking soda ‡ 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg ‡ 1 1/4 cups sugar ‡ 1/2 cup plus 1 teaspoon extravirgin olive oil ‡ 2 large eggs ‡ 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract ‡ 1 medium zucchini, grated and squeezed dry (if your kids will freak out from green specks in the brownies, peel the zucchini first) ‡ 1 teaspoon honey Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease the bottom and sides of a 9-inch-square cake pan. Dust the pan with flour, tapping out the excess. Toss 1/2 cup chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon flour in a small bowl.

Whisk the remaining flour, the cocoa powder, salt, baking soda and nutmeg in a medium bowl; set aside. Beat the sugar, 1/2 cup olive oil, the eggs and vanilla in a large bowl with a mixer on medium speed until smooth and pale, about 3 minutes. Add the flour-cocoa mixture; beat on low speed until combined, about 2 minutes (the batter will be thick). Add the zucchini and beat until combined, about 2 more minutes. Fold in the flour-coated chocolate chips with a wooden spoon. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Transfer to a rack and let cool completely. Make the glaze: Combine the remaining 1/3 cup chocolate chips, 1 teaspoon olive oil and the honey in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on medium-high power in 30-second intervals, stirring, until the chocolate is melted. Spread over the cake, and then cut into pieces.
