Various venues: Gallery Weekend The art highlight for spring: Berlin‘s large and small galleries invite you on an inspiring tour of the new creative scene and show off works of international stature. Artworks, the art market and the viewer never come closer together than in a gallery. In 2004, the Gallery Weekend was founded as a private initiative; today it has long since become an established event and a great alternative to traditional art exhibitions. Every year the list of exhibitors grows longer. Renowned galleries such as Konrad Fischer, Isabella Bortolozzi, John King and Gregor Podnar open their doors. But three newcomers are also showing off their exhibits: Plan B sheds new light on Eastern Europe, Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler works at the intersection of new technologies and economics, Nature Morte builds a bridge to India. The majority of participating showrooms in 2013 are once again around Rudi-Dutschke-Straße, Lindenstraße, Charlottenstraße, Torstraße and Potsdamer Straße.

Art in the bunker: The Boros Collection

Since it was opened in 2001 the Jewish Museum in Berlin has developed into one of the most prominent museum institutions in Europe. yz The spectacular building designed by Daniel Libeskind is a masterpiece and has long since become a Berlin landmark. You can experience two millennia of German-Jewish history here.

This is the second exhibition from Christian and Karen Boros shown in a surface air-raid shelter from the Second World War. The exhibition features pieces from the 1990s to the present day, including works by Klara Lidén, constellations by Thomas Ruff and Ai Weiwei, whose work is represented in the bunker by way of a six-metre-high specimen of Chinese bog wood. Many artists mount their works in the bunker themselves.

ost people thought he was a clown. He saw himself as a braggart, a spendthrift, an instigator. The painter, photographer and installation and performance artist was also a drinker, dancer, musician and writer. He did everything to excess, which in 1997 at just 43 years of age cost him his life. On 25th February Martin Kippenberger would have been 60 years old.

“I was born as the second son of the second marriage on the second Thursday in the second month of the second decade in the second half of the last century of the second millennium” - thus wrote George Widener on a self-portrait. From childhood

the 51-year-old was fascinated by numbers and data; it was accomplishing everyday tasks that he found problematic. As part of the “Secret Universe” series, the number junkie’s first solo European show is on now at the Hamburger Bahnhof. Widener’s work shows maps and sketches on scraps of paper, executed with a meticulous hand. Fortunately for him, the artist from Kentucky has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. It means he no longer has to live alone with savant syndrome, or to be seen by others as crazy. Anyway, weren’t most of the major artists kind of crazy?

t was a great day for urban Berlin. On 7th July 2008, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Quebec decided to include six housing estates from the Berlin Modernism movement in the World Heritage list of German architecture, thereby bestowing them with a great honour. The reason for the decision was that the listed estates not only represented a new type of social housing from the period of classical modernity, but also exercised considerable inďŹ&#x201A;uence on the development of architecture and urban planning in the following years.

Architects such as Walter Gropius, Bruno Taut and Hans Scharoun, whose names are closely associated with urban development in Berlin, forged a connection between high art and constructional pragmatism with their designs. Their answer to the housing shortage after World War I marked a structural change in housing: no longer should people spend their lives in dark tenements with inner courtyards surrounded with side and back wings . The new ﬂats were bright and sunny, affordable for the less well-off and equipped with kitchens, bathrooms and balconies.

At the end of January 2006, the then Berlin Senator for Urban Development, Ingeborg Junge-Reyer, submitted a request to UNESCO that the settlements be included in the World Heritage List. The decision was supported by the fact that the estates are very well preserved to this day. Gartenstadt Falkenberg, Wohnstadt Carl Legien estate, Großsiedlung in Siemensstadt, Großsiedlung Britz, Schillerpark-Siedlung in Wedding and Weiße Stadt in Reinickendorf were all included. They were built in the years 1913 to 1934, between World War I and the rise of the Nazis.

The “White City” in Reinickendorf is characterized by an open internal structure of terraced buildings with green spaces ﬂowing through them. It is dominated by rationality and economy. Also known as the Ringsiedlung, or Ring Estate, this well-known development in northern Charlottenburg is based on a design by Hans Scharoun. He ordered the rows of houses in a strictly north-south direction. The mature trees that remain have emphasised the landscape character of this site from its beginning.

Bruno Taut’s first large urban housing project in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. The architect used dark red brick for the façades, which are reminiscent of the Amsterdam School and give the estate its special character. Gartenstadt Falkenberg In the oldest of the six developments, architect Bruno Taut clustered the ﬁrst phase of houses round the intimate “Akazienhof”, while in the second phase differently proportioned houses are found in staggered terraces and groups. Most striking are the colours that were used generously, not only on shutters, cornices, balustrades, porches and wooden balconies, but also to paint the façades bright blue or intense orange. The Carl Legien estate, named after the first chairman of the Allgemeine Deutschen Gewerkschaftsbund (General German Trade Union Federation), founded in 1919, is the closest to the city centre. Because of the high price of land near Prenzlauer Allee, architect Bruno Taut focused on multistorey buildings with four to five floors. Taut used terraces, block perimeters and garden spaces to create semi-public space. All the apartments face away from the street.

THE HUMOUR OF THE ARTIST Although he has been dead for so long, Heinrich Zille is still as much a part of Berlin as Bockwurst with salad. The theatre in the Nikolaiviertel honours the artist and presents a revue of songs before a small audience with great success. ince the newly renovated Mellowpark re-opened its doors in BerlinKöpenick in May it’s been a real highlight, and not only for hard-core skaters and BMX fans. Europe‘s largest extreme sports and leisure park doesn’t just offer the largest open-air skate and BMX park in Germany with 2,000 square metres of road surface, a mini ramp with a spine, a mini mini, half-pipe and trails. It also has another area for other sports like basketball and beach volleyball. It’s also pretty cool that BMX bikes (4 Euros/hour), skateboards (2 Euros/hour) and other equipment are available to hire.

n Berlin-Neukölln, in the Körnerkiez between Hermannstraße and Leinestraße, tucked in amongst betting shops and pubs, you just do not expect a café like this one. The Ungeheuer restaurant is tastefully fitted out with furnishings lovingly selected from the flea market and above them, the creature that gave the cafe its name, a grisly-looking flying insect, sways gently. The menu is not expansive, but the breakfast (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) can be assembled for each customer according to his or her individual wishes. Terrific homemade curd cheese and fruity jam is served both with the classic and vegetarian breakfast. Some of the bread is even baked on the premises and tastes wonderful. The Mediterranean scrambled eggs with dried tomatoes and ham are to be recommended. Portions are lavish and on Sundays a Prosecco is served with the Graved-Lunch-Breakfast – everything at reasonable Neukölln prices.
