What has to be seen in Berlin? Radialsystem V is a great place. It’s where old meets new. In Berlin’s former water pumping station, classical music enters into dialogue with contemporary music. It has clear-cut architecture and a fantastic location on the River Spree. You should definitely make time for it when you’re in Berlin. The Berliner Dom is a wonderfully tranquil place in the midst of the turbulent capital. Berlin has the largest Turkish population outside Turkey. The Turkish weekly market is definitely worth a visit, with its fresh produce and very friendly, vocal traders. Strolling along Maibachufer lets you experience a taste of the Mediterranean in the north of Germany. Where do your guests usually go first? Our Brasserie Desbrosses for breakfast. The

original interior is from the south of France and dates from 1875, but the restaurant is constantly reinventing itself and has a real creative flair. The chef takes care of guests personally at a large wooden table; in the boulangerie everything is baked fresh daily in front of the guests. There is also a great selection of oils, jellies and sweet treats sourced from France. Pocket-friendly prices, a lively ambience, special events and exciting offers for every day of the week: a typical brasserie, and right on Potsdamer Platz in the centre of the city. Chef Martin Lisson and his team are the personal hosts for any visitors who find themselves here, be they Berliners or tourists. What question are you asked most often? What do the crossed golden keys on your lapel stand for? And what do you reply? The golden keys represent our promise to our guests to consistently create personal moments, to create and care for a network of friends worldwide, to care for our guests professionally and with discretion, to show passion for our profession, and to be proud to be able to work as service professionals. Is there anything that annoys you about Berlin? A lack of the self-assurance that, for example, Parisians and New Yorkers have. Berlin doesn’t yet recognise itself as a truly global city, and therefore sometimes gets in its own way. What has been your most difficult task for a guest so far? Do you remember the Icelandic volcanic eruption in 2010? So many flights were cancelled.

Fulfilling the basic desires of our guests, namely the desire to get home, became a real challenge. I remember taxi journeys to Oslo and Paris, group bus trips, and flights via Novosibirsk to get to London. A real state of emergency, very difficult to resolve, but together we were able to help and get our guests back home. What restaurants do you recommend to your guests? We are very happy to recommend neighbourhood restaurants, for example, Taverna Ousies. By far the best and most authentic Greek restaurant in town! It has the charm and flair of a Mediterranean port, right in the middle of Schöneberg. Restaurant Frau Mittenmang on Prenzlauer Berg adapts itself to your mood and gives you a real feeling of being at home.

What has been your most difﬁcult task for a guest so far? An American director’s companion collected reverse glass paintings of saints. Museums & Galleries Ostracized by the Nazis and driven into exile in the USA, Hans Richter has almost been forgotten in this country. Unfairly so, as his life’s work in the field of modernity was groundbreaking. Closely linked to the “Blaue Reiter” and “Die Brücke” schools of artists, Richter showed off his expressive, surreal and slightly cubist “Visionary Portraits” as early as 1917 as part of the first Dada exhibition in Zurich. Approximately 150 paintings, sculptures and collages by the artist and some of his contemporaries are now filling several rooms in the GropiusBau. Films are played non-stop alongside them: funny, political, absurd, boldly edited yet still enjoyable. The early 20th century‘s photographic pioneers such as Man Ray, Ruttmann and Eisenstein were highly influential. n 1901, it took a hot air balloon four hours to reach an altitude of 11,000 metres. The air temperature was minus 40 degrees, and the aviation pioneers had to struggle not to lose consciousness. Just how far we have come since then is plain to see at the ILA Berlin Air Show, the mother of all air shows. In 1909, the year it was founded, more than a million people ﬂocked to Frankfurt am Main where the show was held for the ﬁrst time. The event lasted three months. The airships were undoubtedly the stars of the show. When the “Z II” came gliding in, tens of thousands of

people thronged to the airfield to admire the 136-metre long giant. Countless balloons, zeppelins and aeroplanes filled the grounds on the outskirts of the city. Even in its first year there were 500 exhibitors on site, including the famous Graf Zeppelin and airship builder August von Parseval. Back then, engine-powered aircraft had not yet begun to play a significant role. Three years later the ILA, then known as the General Aviation Exhibition (ALA), moved to the exhibition halls at Berlin Zoo. When the First World War broke out, the event closed its doors for many years.

It didn’t return until 1928, this time held at the Berliner Funkturm exhibition halls. For 29 years it remained the only show of its kind in Germany. From 20th to 23rd May, the Berlin Air Show is open only to trade visitors; from 23rd May the general public can also stroll through the halls and admire the cutting-edge aerospace technology. Worth seeing

Like many synagogues, this one only becomes visible once you have passed the front part of the building. Originally, the former lodge building was a place where Jewish students excluded from the German school system were taught - and later - were prepared for their emigration. Today the synagogue on Joachimsthaler Straße is the only one in Berlin used every day for prayer. The social department of the Jewish community is also housed here, as well as the Jewish youth centre and the Jewish student club.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Jewish way of life began a revival. This is now visible through renovated historic buildings, such as the New Synagogue in Mitte and the Jewish Museum. The Milk & Honey tours will familiarise you not only with Jewish sites, but also with Jewish history, culture and customs.

Founded in 1898, the Library of the Jewish community in Berlin was closed by the Nazi regime. Around 100,000 books were lost in the war. In 1959, in the western Berlin Fasanenstraße, work began on its reconstruction. Volumes were collected on Jewish religion, history and culture. In 1989 after the uniﬁcation, the Library founded in 1974 in Mitte was relocated here. Today, 80,000 media sources can be found in the house, including books, magazines, audiovisual media and microﬁlms on religion and research in different languages. Holocaust, unforgotten By the late 80s the idea of building a memorial to the Jews of Europe to act as a reminder of the Holocaust had begun to take root. Bringing this idea to fruition would take another ten years. Peter Eisenman’s wonderful design depicts a ﬁeld with 2,700 wave-shaped stones laid out like grave stones. Underneath the ﬁeld an “Information Centre” complements the memorial. Here an exhibition documents the destruction of the Jews by the Nazis.

Watching films This year, the Jewish Film Festival will be taking place for the 19th time. The festival management have secured “Zaytoun” as the opening film, the new offering by awardwinning Israeli director Eran Riklis, who made his name with films such as “Lemon Tree” and “The Syrian Bride”. It tells the story of Palestinian boy Fahed, who meets downed Israeli fighter pilot Yoni. From erstwhile enemies they eventually become companions and friends. The director and the young actor Abdallah El Akal will present the film at the opening gala on 29th April in Potsdam. i Neuköllner Oper This is opera for the people in the heart of the neighbourhood: popular, topical, proliﬁc, looking for up-andcoming talent – and with very few subsidies. For over 30 years there have been projects in the little “alleyway”. From medieval spectacles to “large” operas, the young opera house offers everything that you would expect to ﬁnd in an opera house for the public. z y On Mondays in the Hofperle a short program is performed for a donation.

In 1961 the modern building was erected on Bismarckstraße on the site of the 1912 opera house, which had been destroyed in the Second World War. For a long time it was the largest new theatre to be built in Germany. In the ﬁrst part of the 2012/13 season we will be presenting over 20 productions, projects, concerts and interactive events. yz There are regular backstage tours on two or three Saturdays each month.

Schiller Theatre The large national opera house on “Unter den Linden” is the oldest stage in the whole of Berlin. In 1961 it was rebuilt using the original plans from 1742. bout a year ago, Beatrice Leißering opened a small cafe named My Cottage in Haeselerstraße in Westend. The design has a rural feel to it, with the colours red and white predominating. It’s worth a visit purely because of the cakes. The pastry chef worked at the Hotel Adlon for many years, making the ﬁnest cakes and tarts. As soon as you enter the cafe, your eye falls on the display cabinet ﬁlled with lemon meringue tarts, raspberry chocolate cakes and poppyseed cheesecakes. There are always at least six cakes available - they are

Makrönchen Manufaktur A pastel paradise - that’s how you could describe this macaroon maker. A small sales counter, a coffee table with six stools and white-painted wooden boxes on the walls where delicious delicacies await the customers. There are more than 20 flavours

of macaroon on offer, ranging from sweet treats such as Madagascan vanilla, espresso macchiato and rose, to savoury sensations such as curried pumpkin, carrot and ginger and Roquefort. Between two delicate, crispy almond meringue halves hides the aromatic filling. The main ingredients of the meringue are beaten egg whites, sugar, almonds and other nuts. The origins of French macaroons can be traced back to medieval times. These macaroons are different because they contain more almonds, are not quite as sweet, and in addition are gluten-free. During the GDR era, there was a “forbidden city” located in the town of Wünsdorf which was reserved for the military. After reunification, the site fell into disrepair – until the book lovers moved in, that is. Today, thousands of valuable books from the past and present tempt visitors to the forest town to browse and buy. A veritable “booktown” has been created here, based on the example of the British town of Hay-on-Wye located on the Welsh-English border. Visitors who want to learn more about the Wuensdorf area’s 100 years of military history will also find something to interest them. The town has a museum on the subject, with guided tours of the huge bunker systems. Events are held on a regular basis.
