ransparency, vitality and ease: these words could be the motto for the Carnival of Cultures celebrated annually in Berlin-Kreuzberg on Whit weekend. It attracts approximately one million visitors to the capital every year (page 20). No visitor should miss this large, colourful festival. It’s the expression of a new Berlin where people of many different nationalities and religions feel at home. Anyone looking to escape the hectic inner city has numerous opportunities close at hand. A (rental) bike is the perfect means of exploring the capital’s parks and gardens. Stroll through the weekly markets, or breathe in the country air in Dahlem (page 36). Or if you prefer, why not watch a play, a cabaret show or a rock concert (page 38). Tired but happy and looking for a way to end the day, you won’t need to look far for the perfect place: countless restaurants are just waiting to treat you with their culinary specialities.

Typical Typisch Berlin Berlin
Typical Berlin
Every city has its own little rules and peculiarities. Berlin, too. There are a couple of things that are typica l of the German capital – and we’ve co mpiled a list of them just for you
Broiler Broiler was the name often given to roast or fried chicken sold in road-side snackbars, particularly in the DDR. If a whole portion of Broiler will be too much then ordering half of one is an option. What question are you asked most often? Guests ask me lots of questions about everything to do with Berlin and its attractions. And what do you reply? If it’s the guest’s first time in Berlin, I always recommend that they start off with a tour of the city.
Street musicians usicians Whether in the metro, outside a shop or on a street corner – there’s music everywhere on the streets of Berlin. Giving a small tip is considered polite, provided you like the music!

What has been your most difficult task for a guest so far? Getting an Audi transported from Berlin to Riga. Luckily I knew the salesman at the dealership where the car was parked. That made things a bit easier - the transfer went without a hitch. Finally, a tip... Restaurant Filou on Savignyplatz is one of my favourite restaurants in the city.

He built a bridge between pop and avant-garde, wore the he most colourful stage costumes of his time, and merged m art and life into one like no-one else. The exhibition from d London’s Victoria and Albert Museum has finally reached Berlin. Even today, the Thin White Duke feels strongly connected to this city where he spent a particularly productive period of time in the 1970s. He recorded the albums “Heroes” and “Lodger” here, and last year created an ode to Berlin with the song “Where are we now?”. The exhibition includes handwritten lyrics, fashion items, photos, films, music videos, Bowie’s own instruments and illustrations for album covers. The display includes Ziggy Stardust’s overalls designed by Freddie Burretti (1972), Kansai Yamamoto’s extravagant designs for the Aladdin Sane tour (1973), and the Union Jack coat that Bowie designed together with Alexander McQueen for the album cover of Earthling (1997). Special automated audio guides provide visitors with the perfect soundtrack to accompany the approximately 300 exhibits and film clips. There are two Watsons. One is the real soldier, working on combat training on a computer in a Washington classroom. The other is Watson the avatar in this computer game, lying dead in the dust of an Afghan mountain landscape. The real
Watson has to accept that the game is over. Conceptual artist Harun Farocki, born in 1944 in the then German-occupied Czechoslovakia, uses “Serious Games” to examine the use of computer game technology in the training of American soldiers. “Watson is down” is one of four installations. The barrage of photos, videos and images with which we are bombarded every day does not seem to heighten our awareness of their power to manipulate. With his films and videos, Farocki wants to make us aware of new perspectives, and of images themselves.

is goal was “to make objects that remain”. With this in mind, the designer born near Milan in 1932 created toys, furniture, office tools and kitchen appliances. In the 1950s he worked for the design label Danese Milano, and in the 1990s he transformed the Royal Porcelain Factory (KPM) into an experimental workshop where nothing less than crockery for the 21st century was to be created. The BERLIN crockery set was awarded the iF Design Award in 1998. With the help of sketches, interviews and models, this exhibition illuminates his co-operation with the Royal Porcelain Factory (KPM).

he museum is turned into a battlefield for the “Expansion of the Battle Zone” exhibition. At the end of 2014, the Neue Nationalgalerie will be closing its doors for four years to undergo renovation. Until then it is presenting - as a completion of the collection trilogy - its collection of works from 1968 to 2000. Art after 1968 wanted to clear things up, break things up, shake things up. Works on show include those of Swiss Pipilotti Rist,
who scrutinised social and sexual stereotypes with her pieces, and Andy Warhol, who turned battle dress into wall decoration, alongside works by Richte, Newman, Tübke, Rauch and Beuys. Art was a startling site of social conflict, especially for these masters of installation who opened up this obstacle course-like path. Carnival of World Cultures
EVERYTHING IN COLOUR W For the past 18 years the Carnival of Cultures has been the multicultural event of the year. With around one million visitors each year the festival reflects just how truly colourful, imaginative and tolerant Berlin is. Integration you can celebrate and join in with!
20 MARCO POLO Berliner | June 2014
hen Chancellor Angela Merkel declared, “multiculturalism has failed”, the organisers of the Carnival of Cultures could only balk for they’ve seen their city in action. This year they will again present a colourful and lively 70 nation community, who together organise both the street parade and street festival. With a staggering 79 groups, 4000 participants and 67 floats, everyone will be outfitted in either their country’s traditional dress or imaginative costumes and move through the streets of Kreuzberg and Neukölln, presenting their vision of the dynamic and multicultural melting pot that is Berlin. The Werkstatt der Kulturen (Workshop of Cultures) organisation started the carnival

Top Eve nt (7.–9.6. 2014) 18 years ago. With the collapse of the wall, the organisers wanted to send a clear signal and show that this newly reunited Berlin, both old and new, could be a model of true integration with its stronger than 872,000 people with an immigrant background. “The Carnival of Cultures developed against the backdrop of Berlin’s growing internationality and the resulting influx of immigrants from all areas of the world,” says Nadja Mau, one of the carnival organisers. She is convinced of its effect, “The carnival encourages and stimulates popular art and culture at the highest possible level”. Similar to the Notting Hill Carnival in London and the Rotterdam Zomer Car-
nival, this event has a spirit of integration with which people of any age and background can identify. In previous years, however, the event organisers were worried about whether it would happen at all; many of the groups who completely self-financed their participation as well as the floats, ran out of money and subsidies were often cut. This Whitsun, however, when the beautifully decorated floats glide past filled with people drumming and dancing madly, you won’t sense any worry. It’s a day of celebration. Time and again the participants demonstrate their spectacular creativity, most likely wanting to be the ones to grab the coveted prize for the best float.

Company founder John Barbour (1849-1918) grew up in Galloway, Scotland with a real appreciation for waterproof clothing. The British aristocracy originally wore Barbour jackets, coats, shoes and accessories while hunting; the clothes later made the jump to city fashion. 120 years later, the carefully crafted pieces from this traditional fashion house are not only practical but also stylish. The company supplies goods to the British royal family and is therefore allowed to display the royal coat-of-arms on its labels.

T
he area around Hackescher Markt is a real El Dorado for shoe lovers: Everything from sneakers to high heels can be found here, from men’s leather shoes to ďŹ ne boots. In short, whatever the shoe collector’s heart could possibly desire. High-quality designer shoes with an excel-
lent Italian ďŹ nish are not the only things that customers can ďŹ nd in Orlando. Store owner Richard MĂźhe is especially busy right before ďŹ lm and fashion events since his actress cousin Anna Maria is just one of many famous faces who holds the store’s chic range in high esteem. Other Berlin VIPs are also
regular, welcome visitors to the store. Whether you’re looking for Roman sandals, wedge heels or platforms, you’re bound to ďŹ nd them here. Sturdy footwear for feet that have done their fair share of pavement pounding is also available. The store stocks shoes from Ecco as part of its range. The Portuguese label Goldmud known for its fabulous boots amongst other things, also has its own store in the area. For their collections, the shoes’ makers travel all over the world to gain as much input as possible – a fact that’s obvious when you look at the footwear they sell. W
hether they’re large chains or traditional retailers, jewellers have always been found on the street of luxury that is Friedrichstraße. Wempe Berlin, for example, has been selling high-quality watches and pieces of jewellery for over 130 years. This long-established company is known worldwide and even has a branch on Fifth Avenue in New York. In Berlin, Wempe has a total of three stores: one on Friedrichstraße and two on Kurfürstendamm (street numbers 184 and 215). Thomas Sabo is loved by VIPs both in Germany and abroad. With a skull and crossbones on the walls, this shop on Friedrichstraße is a real tribute to the world associated with this rockerchic label. Travelling with the feel-good factor: Grooming products
N
o trip to Berlin would be complete without a visit to one of its many spas or wellness facilities. If you want to ensure the resulting feeling of relaxation lasts as long as possible, simply go to one of the city’s many small, yet excellent, specialised cosmetics stores. American grooming and beauty products from the likes of Crabtree and Evelyn, for instance, are good quality as well as stylishly packaged. What‘s more, they‘re affordable too. Company founder Cy Harvey was inspired mainly by England‘s early medicine chests or so-called „still rooms“, which used 100% natural essences and ingredients in their products. If you like it more francophile you can explore the L‘OccitaneStore: The aim to produce 100 percent natural products is the desire of this firm.

It’s an annual highlight in the German capital. Some 20,000 guests head to the Waldbühne laden with picnic baskets to enjoy the Berlin Philharmonic’s last concert of the season in the open air. This summer, the season will close to the sounds of the works of Tchaikovsky. “The Tempest” and the “Romeo and Juliet” Fantasy Overture are both on the programme. This summer musical extravaganza will once again be conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. The Berlin Waldbühne is no stranger to the Venezuelan, who’s been chief conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 2009. In 1988, a few cabaret artists in Kreuzberg pulled on their blue overalls and founded the Berliner Kabarett Anstalt, known as the BKA for short. Open Air An idyll under the trees Beer and well-chilled white wine taste best when the sun is shining, when you can sit comfortably under the trees and a drink doesn‘t go to your head too quickly. Like just now. Negotiating the pavements in the city once again becomes an extended slalom run as restaurant life moves outdoors. And that’s a good thing because it promotes togetherness – more so on a robust wooden bench than on white-clothed tables. But you can’t find a table under a tree just anywhere; they inevitably have something to do with restaurants or beer gardens. The history of beer gardens harks back to Bavaria more than 150 years ago. To keep their winter-brewed beer cool in the summer, brewers began to use storage areas above the ground as well as their brewery cellars, for example under the dense canopy of horse-chestnut trees. Who could blame the brewers for providing samples of their skills in the same place, albeit without culinary offerings; people had to provide those themselves. It’s thanks to this tradition that Bavarians are still permitted to bring picnic baskets and snacks into beer gardens. In Berlin such a thing is not permitted, of course. What’s eaten is what’s on the menu of the house. But it’s just as comfortable as in Bavaria. We have the Dahme and the Spree, a few lakes and shady trees. And of course, countless open-air bars, where you can really enjoy the Berlin summer.

No Limits: Berlin Moscow
IN THESE CAFES AND RESTAURANTS THE FIRST MEAL OF THE DAY IS A REAL PLEASURE
A French-born chef of Portuguese descent serves up Russian dishes with an international flavour on Berlin’s most famous boulevard

new restaurant by the name of „Berlin Moscow“ has opened up on Unter den Linden: not an everyday occurrence on this, the most well known of Berlin’s boulevards. For that reason alone, everybody was quite curious as to what sort of big culinary project was hiding behind the 60 metre long, two-storey glass façade. Whatever was to be found, you certainly couldn’t get closer to the Muscovites anywhere else here in Berlin, as the restaurant is located directly across from the embassy of the Russian Federation. But does this proximity pay dividends on the diners’ plates? According to Emmanuel Soares, the restaurant’s well-travelled chef born in France with Portuguese roots, the food is “light, fresh and clear in structure”. In other words, it’s just about the exact opposite of what Russian mothers serve their children. And yet, the menu includes such Russian favourites as borscht and solyanka, pelmeni and blini, classic Soares refashioned with a modern flair, thereby giving the dishes the desired lightness.
i Barcellos – Salon Sucré Gastronomy and hair styling? The combination sounds unusual, but recently in Berlin there have sprung up some cafés, which skilfully combine the two. Saarow Therme
Bad Saarow was popular in the “Golden 20s” with Berlin creative artists and film-makers like Maxim Gorki and Harry Liedtke, who bought lakeside properties and houses in the spa and health resort. It has lost of none of its charm since then. After taking a stroll along the banks of Lake Scharmützelsee it’s worth stopping off at the thermal baths.

Built by Friedrich Wilhelm I between 1734 and 1742 for Dutch craftsmen who he had brought to Potsdam, the project’s construction was the responsibility of Johann Boumann, whose work is remembered in a museum. Conveyor bridge F 60 With its countless braces, the steel colossus that is the “Förderbrücke” (conveyor bridge) F60 built between 1989 and 1991 resembles a horizontal Eiffel Tower. Except that, at 502 metres long it dwarfs the 320 metre high Paris landmark. The F60 is one of the biggest pieces of mobile machinery in the world and was used as an overburden conveyor bridge for lignite mining. In 1992 it was decommissioned in its original location of Lichterfeld and opened up to the public as part of a walk-through mine. Guided tours and an yz “F60 dinner” are available. A light and sound installation shows off the mine at night in a splash of colour whilst work noises from the belt create an atmosphere of real mechanical activity. A pear tree with a history
lia (2
)
The town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg was the birthplace in 1819 of Theodor Fontane, one of Germany’s greatest writers. A few kilometres further south is the village of Ribbeck, made famous in Fontane’s poem “Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland”, where visitors to the churchyard can still see the stump of the pear tree featured in the poem. A new tree has been planted to commemorate what is probably the most famous pear tree in literary history.
