eptember is a special month: the heat of summer is over, school holidays are a thing of the past and day-to-day life can start up again. Or at least it could, but there’s hardly a month better suited to a city break than September. Precisely the bustle that heralds the end of summer holds its own charm. So it’s also no coincidence that this is the time the IFA chooses to give us a glimpse into the future of consumer electronics. If you want to know what we’ll all have in our apartments tomorrow, you’re in the right place. We tell you where to find the highlights (page 20). On the other hand, live music fans should definitely not let the Berlin Music Festival in the Philharmonic and the Kammermusiksaal pass them by. Over 21 days, more than 75 works by 24 composers are being performed. And of course we also have lots more tips and offers for you. Find out about September’s exhibition and theatre highlights, the best restaurants and their autumn specials, and naturally where to go on a trip to the Brandenburg countryside.

In gentle curves, the Spree meanders through the center of Berlin. Whoever wants to can travel into the night on a river boat. Equally beautiful is to settle on its banks.

Typical Typisch Berlin Berlin
Typical Berlin
Every city has its own little rules and peculiarities. Berlin, too. There are a couple of things that are typica l of the German capital – and we’ve co mpiled a list of them just for you
Broiler Broiler was the name often given to roast or fried chicken sold in road-side snackbars, particularly in the DDR. If a whole portion of Broiler will be too much then ordering half of one is an option. Berlin is second only to Manhattan in terms of its numb er of dogs. Canines are allowed on the German capital’s public tra nsport and the city has no rules abo ut keeping them on a leash. Berlin even has dedicated dog parks. Nevertheless, owners must pick up what their four-legged friends lea ve behind – although this regula tion isn’t always obeyed. What has to be seen in Berlin? Without a doubt the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße, the Stasi Museum in Hohenschönhausen, the Tränenpalast on Friedrichstraße, Asisi’s wall panorama at Checkpoint Charlie and the “raisin bomber” aircraft at the old Tempelhof airport, to get a feel of what the divided Berlin was like.

What question are you asked most often? What city guides or tours are there in Berlin?
xxxx
My Berlin Tips
And what do you reply? There are countless tours: exclusive guided tours on foot, by bike, by car or in a limousine. City tours in vintage cars, on Segways, by horse and carriage, by boat, jogging tours, double-decker bus tours, rickshaw tours, by E-tuk tuk, or even helicopter tours.
Street musicians Whether in the metro, outside a shop or on a street corner – there’s music everywhere on the streets of Berlin. Giving a small tip is considered polite, provided you like the music!
Maria Eleftheria
Where do you go yourself when you have free time? In summer to one of the many lakes in and around Berlin, in winter to the Liquidrom spa to relax. Finally, a tip... The Max und Moritz restaurant on Oranienstraße in Kreuzberg, where you can still get a good, down-toearth, home-cooked meal like your mother would make. “Futtern wie bei Muttern”, as the Berliners say. The Brandenburg Gate On fine days you may come across a man or woman with a barrel organ at the Brandenburg Gate right in the heart of Berlin. They‘re also part of the city‘s history.

There are more artists living in Berlin than in any other European city. So anyone interested in modern art shouldn’t miss this event. For six days, Berlin Art Week brings together more than one hundred exhibitions. Some of the city’s best-known art and cultural institutions, including the Akademie der Künste, the Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and the me Collectors Room invite you to take part in a varied programme of exhibitions, performances, lectures and debates. The abc art berlin contemporary trade fair gives a good overview of artists in the city, both established and upand-coming. For the first time, the “fine art and finance conference” Artfi will be taking place here. It gives an overview of the global art market, and brings players in the art world together as creators, critics and collectors. Art Week kicks off at 7pm on 16th September in the Akademie der Künste, with the exhibition “Schwindel der Wirklichkeit” (“Vertigo of Reality”).
Berlin has an amazing number of museums, galleries and exhibition rooms. Carry on reading for the latest art and cultural highlights

There are two Watsons. One is the real soldier, working on combat training on a computer in a Washington classroom. The other is Watson the avatar in this computer game, lying dead in the dust of an Afghan mountain landscape. The real
Watson has to accept that the game is over. Conceptual artist Harun Farocki, born in 1944 in the then German-occupied Czechoslovakia, uses “Ernste Spiele” (“Serious Games”) to examine the use of computer game technology in the training of American soldiers. “Watson is down” is one of four installations. The barrage of photos, videos and images with which we are bombarded every day does not seem to heighten our awareness of their power to manipulate. With his films and videos, Farocki wants to make us aware of new perspectives, and of images themselves.

is goal was “to make objects that remain”. With this in mind, the designer born near Milan in 1932 created toys, furniture, office tools and kitchen appliances. In the 1950s he worked for the design label Danese Milano, and in the 1990s he transformed the Royal Porcelain Factory (KPM) into an experimental workshop where nothing less than crockery for the 21st century was to be created. The BERLIN crockery set was awarded the iF Design Award in 1998. With the help of sketches, interviews and models, this exhibition illuminates his co-operation with the Royal Porcelain Factory (KPM).

nder the name “Great German Radio Exhibition”, this electronics trade fair first took place in Berlin in 1924. Since then, it has become one of the capital’s indispensable trade fairs, and the most important in the world for consumer electronics. Around 1,200 exhibitors from 32 countries present their innovations every year, from mixers and mixing desks, to voicecontrolled TVs and the latest 3D printers which, as the name suggests, print objects in three dimensions. This year, again exhibitors will also be setting out their wares outside the fair’s pre-

cincts. Parallel to the exhibition, the “City West celebrates IFA” event will be taking place on Kurfürstendamm’s Breitscheidplatz. This “trend show on Kurfürstendamm” will include raffles, quiz shows, dance, talk shows and live music over 4,000 square metres around the Memorial Church. Of course, the IFA is no longer an exclusive meeting place for techno pros. Last year, a leadership series was launched for openminded older visitors. The “60+ Guided Tour” is for those interested in more than the latest hearing aids; it also acquaints them with the latest developments in the smartphone and
GPS markets. And anyone in need of a rest after visiting the ICC exhibition halls can find beer, music, relaxation and entertainment in the Summer Garden where Helge Schneider, Udo Lindenberg, Scott Hamilton, Philipp Poisel & Band and the Sportfreunde Stiller will be giving concerts. IFA-Chef Jens Heithecker already has a clear vision for 2024, when the IFA will be celebrating its 100th birthday: “It will even be possible to control the colour of our walls electronically: not only will you be able to watch giant screens, you won’t need to wallpaper any more.”
“The IFA gives visitors the opportunity to experience and try out the whole world of consumer electronics in an entertaining and emotional way.” Jens HeITHecker, IFA DIrecTor

From high heels to cowboy boots: Shoes
T
he area around Hackescher Markt is a real El Dorado for shoe lovers: Everything from sneakers to high heels can be found here, from men’s leather shoes to fine boots. In short, whatever the shoe collector’s heart could possibly desire. High-quality designer shoes with an excel-
lent Italian finish are not the only things that customers can find in Orlando. Store owner Richard Mühe is especially busy right before film and fashion events since his actress cousin Anna Maria is just one of many famous faces who holds the store’s chic range in high esteem. Other Berlin VIPs are also
regular, welcome visitors to the store. Whether you’re looking for Roman sandals, wedge heels or platforms, you’re bound to find them here. Sturdy footwear for feet that have done their fair share of pavement pounding is also available. The store stocks shoes from Ecco as part of its range. The Portuguese label Goldmud known for its fabulous boots amongst other things, also has its own store in the area. For their collections, the shoes’ makers travel all over the world to gain as much input as possible – a fact that’s obvious when you look at the footwear they sell. he name of this label is a bit… odd, at first glance. Not so once you know that “WESC” is an abbreviation for “We are the Superlative Conspiracy”. WESC is known mainly for its stylish, brightly coloured headphones: whether in neon colours or gold, deep black or bright white – whoever partakes in the WESC conspiracy can be recognised by their huge headphones. But it’s not just headphones that are on sale in the shop: T-shirts, skirts, hoodies and lots of other streetwear accessories are available too.

If you want to ensure the resulting feeling of relaxation lasts as long as possible, simply go to one of the city’s many small, yet excellent, specialised cosmetics stores. American grooming and beauty products from the likes of Crabtree and Evelyn, for instance, are good quality as well as stylishly packaged. What‘s more, they‘re affordable too. hether they’re large chains or traditional retailers, jewellers have always been found on the street of luxury that is Friedrichstraße. Wempe Berlin, for example, has been selling high-quality watches and pieces of jewellery for over 130 years. This longestablished company is known worldwide and even has a branch on Fifth Avenue in New York. In Berlin, Wempe has a total of three stores: one on Friedrichstraße and two on Kurfürstendamm (street numbers 184 and 215). Thomas Sabo is loved by VIPs both in Germany and abroad. With a skull and crossbones on the walls, this shop on Friedrichstraße is a real tribute to the world associated with this rocker-chic label. Needless to say, a Swarowski store can also be found on the street.

This is one of Berlin’s most unusual destinations. On the 5th floor of the Schönhauser Allee shopping centre’s former car park, yz you will find what is probably Berlin’s highest beach bar. Guests lounge in deckchairs, sofas and wooden benches and dig their toes into the fine sand; 40 tons of the stuff were carted upstairs to create this city beach. Sustenance is readily available. Klunkerkranich The Klunkerkranich owes its existence to the trend for taking unused areas and redesigning them in exciting ways. At a height of 103 metres, the Kollhoff tower is named after the architect who designed it. It’s the tallest building on Potsdamer Platz, and the terrace belonging to the restaurant is one of the highest public spaces in Berlin (along with the Park Inn panorama terrace on Alexanderplatz). A place you can literally blow the cobwebs away.

A festival of superlatives with 31 events over 21 days with more that 75 works by 24 composers; more than 25 orchestras, chamber ensembles and soloists are due to perform. The music festival will be opened by the Staatskapelle Berlin with two Brahms concertos for piano and orchestra, conducted by Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel. Alongside Brahms, Schumann is another focus of the music festival – and there’s a proponent of the valved horn as a solo instrument. This is an instrument that is seldom taken out of the orchestra context. Schumann’s “Concert Piece for Four Horns and Orchestra” has been selected for performance, a virtuoso piece that was almost unplayable on wind instruments for a long time due to its technical demands. Incidentally, the horn will be heard throughout the festival including in Georg Friedrich Hass’ Concerto Grosso with Four Alpine Horns and Orchestra. The festival’s final chord will be played by the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle with a symphony by Brahms and another by Schumann. The second world war destroeyed the building almost completely, the hall, were the audience sit has been preserved. In the 1960s opera was performed for the first time in German in this Classical building. Walter Felsenstein produced it. The current director, the Australian Barry Kosky, gives the opera a new image with humor and passion – as you can see at the current performance of the “Zauberflöte”.
Tony Bennett’s songs such as ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ and ‘Steppin’ Out with my Baby’ wrote music history. Lady Gaga’s recent collaboration with Bennett on the jazz album ‘Cheek to Cheek’ shows that this 17-time Grammy award winner who had his greatest hits in the 1950s can still attract listeners today. Anyone driving from Berlin to central Potsdam is bound to notice Garage du Pont. Just behind the Glienicker Bridge, to the right-hand side of the 1930s buildings, lies a lovingly restored former garage. Since the spring of 2012 it’s been home to a restaurant dedicated to French cuisine. Classics from the Grand Nation are served here, for example herbed pork rilletes maison, croque monsieur, and of course steak frites and quiche. But we’re still near Berlin, so you can also order a currywurst with fries so good that it justifies a visit all by itself. The wine list offers a selection of reds and whites from well-known wine-growing regions in Germany and France, including the Othegraven vineyard run by Günther Jauch and his wife. The highlight, however, is the garage itself. It’s decorated with quotes from automotive history, refurbished car seats, metal workshop trolleys which are now put to use when serving, old enamel signs and adverts from classic brands. The adjacent museum hall houses jawdropping classics such as the Simca 8 Dého Le Mans, a 1939 racing car. And finally, the garage-look loft is available for private parties and corporate events. Worth a visit. Restaurants No Limits: Berlin Moscow
IN THESE CAFES AND RESTAURANTS THE FIRST MEAL OF THE DAY IS A REAL PLEASURE

Breakfast
A
new restaurant by the name of „Berlin Moscow“ has opened up on Unter den Linden: not an everyday occurrence on this, the most well known of Berlin’s boulevards. For that reason alone, everybody was quite curious as to what sort of big culinary project was hiding behind the 60 metre long, two-storey glass façade. Whatever was to be found, you certainly couldn’t get closer to the Muscovites anywhere else here in Berlin, as the restaurant is located directly across from the embassy of the Russian Federation. But does this proximity pay dividends on the diners’ plates? According to Emmanuel Soares, the restaurant’s well-travelled chef born in France with Portuguese roots, the food is “light, fresh and clear in structure”. In other words, it’s just about the exact opposite of what Russian mothers serve their children. And yet, the menu includes such Russian favourites as borscht and solyanka, pelmeni and blini, classic Soares refashioned with a modern flair, thereby giving the dishes the desired lightness.

reuzberg has always been one of Berlin’s most cosmopolitan districts and here in the area between Lausitzerplatz and Mariannenplatz visitors are greeted on all sides by exotic sounds and smells. Now a stylish Caribbeanstyle restaurant has taken up residence in an attractive ivy-covered house in the area. Against the soft hum of world music, guests can relax and eat either at one of the pavement tables or in the colourfully-painted interior. With a definite emphasis on key ingredients such as fruit and peppers, the menu offers a range of Jamaican-style meat, fish and vegetable dishes. Jerk Plate, a Caribbean speciality of spicy chicken wings, shrimps with marinated vegetables and pineapple, is highly recommended. There is a cocktail menu too.

Conveyor bridge F 60 With its countless braces, the steel colossus that is the “Förderbrücke” (conveyor bridge) F60 built between 1989 and 1991 resembles a horizontal Eiffel Tower. Except that, at 502 metres long it dwarfs the 320 metre high Paris landmark. The F60 is one of the biggest pieces of mobile machinery in the world and was used as an overburden conveyor bridge for lignite mining. In 1992 it was decommissioned in its original location of Lichterfeld and opened up to the public as part of a walk-through mine. Guided tours and an yz “F60 dinner” are available. A pear tree with a history The town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg was the birthplace in 1819 of Theodor Fontane, one of Germany’s greatest writers. A few kilometres further south is the village of Ribbeck, made famous in Fontane’s poem “Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland”, where visitors to the churchyard can still see the stump of the pear tree featured in the poem. A new tree has been planted to commemorate what is probably the most famous pear tree in literary history.

Ostrich meat is considered a delicacy among gourmands. And because of its low cholesterol and fat content, it’s actually very healthy too. Several farms in Brandenburg specialise in producing this culinary delight. Here are the addresses of three of them:
