Notes About Our Trips

Transportation is provided in our new deluxe 36 passenger mini-bus, equipped with a wheelchair lift and can accommodate 2 wheelchair passengers. Please indicate at registration if you require a wheelchair spot on the bus or have any special needs. Registration is taken on a first-come, first-served basis, when accompanied with payment. If a trip is full, we strongly encourage you to put your name on the waitlist. Many times there are cancellations, additional tickets may be acquired, or an additional date may be scheduled. If the deadline has passed, please call to check for availability. We encourage participants to bring their own reusable water bottle in an effort to support our environment.

All trips have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15, unless otherwise noted.

TRIPS

Four Winds

The Four Winds Casino shuttle service is back and the BPD is booked. The shuttle package gives each person $15 for slot play and $10 for food (the buffet is closed). We will be arriving in style on a roomy coach bus only filled to half capacity. Register by 05/13. Min 20 | Max 28. (TG)

Cantigny Gardens

Cantigny is a 500-acre park in Wheaton, Illinois, 30 miles west of Chicago. It is the former estate of Joseph Medill and his grandson Colonel Robert R. McCormick, publishers of the Chicago Tribune. Cantigny also offers its famous flower and tank gardens. We will be enjoying a meal at Cantigny’s Bertie’s Bistro. Register by 06/14. Min 10 | Max 15. (TG)

Chicago Architectural River Boat Tour

Chicago’s architecture is known worldwide, and there’s nothing like seeing it from all three branches of the Chicago River. Over 40 Chicago landmarks await you on our 75-minute Architecture Tour, from hidden architectural treasures to the city’s most famous landmarks. The expert guides will tell you how Chicago’s buildings, architecture and engineering made the city famous. Our boat will be departing at 3:15pm so please eat lunch prior to the trip. Lincoln Park Zoo

Join us as we enjoy a summer day at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Lincoln Park Zoo is a 35-acre zoo in Lincoln Park, Chicago, Illinois. The zoo was founded in 1868, making it the fourth oldest zoo in North America. Please be sure to eat lunch before the trip and pack sunscreen. Some snacks and beverages will be provided on the bus. St. Charles Paddle Wheel Boat

Cruise the scenic Fox River from St. Charles on the Fox River Queen. We will be enjoying the historic hour long river cruise in rain or shine on the covered Fox River Queen. Before the river cruise we will be stopping at Portillos for an eat on your own experience. Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided on the river cruise by the BPD. Register by 07/26. Salternative Spa / Salt Room

Beyond a spa, Salternative is a tranquil get away that you can visit anytime you need a little peace. The benefits of the salt room can be felt deep in your lungs as you are whisked to a beach far, far from here. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and thick socks. Slippers will be provided and it is recommended you bring a blanket from home. There will not be a meal included with this trip so please be sure to have lunch before getting onto the bus. S’mores, Singing, and Seniors

Summer nights at Fischer Farm offer a get away close to home. Join us for s’mores and beverages around the fire with music from yours truly played on the ukulele. OVERNIGHT TRIP

The Best of Starved Rock

Join us for the Best of Starved Rock overnight! When we arrive at the Starved Rock Lodge we will have some time to relax before the events of the evening. The night we arrive will start with dinner in the lodge and a show from Shake, Rattle, and Roll! This rock and roll show will include favorites from Bobby Darin, John Mellencamp, Neil Diamond, Dean Martin, the 50’s & 60’s and more. After the show time will be on your own to relax in your room or take in the views of the river at sunset. In the morning we will be enjoying breakfast on the veranda and then heading for an hour long boat cruise in the Illinois River. LUNCH & DINNER MOBILE

Do you like to try different restaurants and eating out with your friends? Leave the driving to us! Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic our maximum number of participants is limited, so sign up early. Each trip price includes: meal, gratuity, and transportation fees for residents and non-residents. The Oak Room offers use of card tables, cards, puzzles and books. Due to Covid-19 we are currently unable to be open to a drop-in schedule. Scheduled card play is $1 for residents and $2 for non-residents to cover coffee and snack expenses.

Hand & Foot/Samba Game

Hand & Foot / Samba is a card game for 4 to 6 players per table. The object of the game is to get rid of cards from your hand pile and then from your foot pile. It is important to arrive on time as partners and tables are determined at the beginning. (TG)

Canasta Club

This is a very friendly group and will help beginners get up to speed to play the game. Canasta can be played with 2, 3, 5, or 6 players. This group meets only on the first Thursday of the month. (TG)

Bunco

Second & Fourth Tuesday | 10:00-11:30A

Players roll the dice to accumulate points by rolling certain combinations. Prizes are awarded for most buncos, most wins, highest score, and lowest score. No previous experience necessary. (TG)

Birthday Bingo

Fourth Thursday | 1:00-3:00P

This is a fun drop-in bingo event that starts out with cake and refreshments for everyone and a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" for anyone celebrating a birthday that month. Then we play bingo for prizes that include useful items, edible items or pretty items. If it is your birthday month, you will receive a $2 gift certificate to use on any Oak Room program or trip. LUNCH BUNCH & BINGO

Please join our terrific community of people in the Oak Room for lunch and a rousing round of Bingo. Included is a wonderful meal and dessert at a reasonable price. Bingo prizes include, but are not limited to, paper goods, cookies, household essentials, costume jewelry, and canned foods. We also offer an optional raffle and door prizes. Doors open at 11:00am. Movie Monday in the Oak Room

Oak Room Puzzle Pick Up New!

Contact Trent for the Oak Room puzzle pick up program. Once you have scheduled a time to pick up your puzzle, meet at the Oak Room entrance to choose a puzzle and pick up your snack pack. The snack pack includes two cans of soda, one sleeve of cookies and a mini bag of pretzels. (TG)

Lets meet and talk! We can learn a new game together or you can teach me one of your favorites. If you are interested for any reason we can book time to be together and get to know each other. I would be happy to teach you how to use Zoom for video calling with friends and family. Max 1. (TG)

Wednesday Walkers New!

Wednesday Walkers is an opportunity for people to get outside with friends and walk in the summer air. The walkers will meet at the Kiwanis shelter at 2:30pm where our regular Oak Room refreshments will be available (water bottles, soda,) on ice in the cooler. The walking will be done in the adjacent field and socially distant visiting under the shade of the shelter will be available. At the end of the month we’ll celebrate your commitment to health and socialization with a cookout under the shelter! (TG)

Beginners Crochet Class Dishcloth or Face Cloth

Learn to crochet within a small class of students. Our experienced teacher will help you get started with an enjoyable new hobby that can leave you with enough knowledge to work at your own pace on future projects. You will learn the chain, single crochet stitch, double crochet stitch, as well as how to turn your work. This course will walk you through making small square swatches of your stitches that will be used as dishcloths, or face cloths. A supply list will be given upon registration. Register by 06/07. Intermediate Crochet Class Baby Sweater & Hat

This adorable sweater and hat set for a newborn will be one of those sweet gifts that parents will cherish. You must have a good knowledge of single and double crochet stitches. This project will require a little work each day, as the project has to move along to learn the next step each week. In this class you will be counting stitches and learning how to read a pattern.
