Fischer Farm

Fischer Farm

Fischer Farm is one of the oldest remaining homesteads in the county. The family settled here in 1836 and established a dairy farm. Their success was evident by 1919 when they had the beautiful foursquare farmhouse constructed. This homestead now forms the core of the Fischer Woods Preserve. This preserve is still home to remnant prairie and wetland and provides a glimpse of what the first settlers to the area saw. The land is valued both for these original seedbeds of native plants and for its historical integrity. The nine structures are all connected to the Fischer family and remain on their original foundations. The Bensenville Park District, in cooperation with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, has been working to preserve both the homestead and the native ecosystems while promoting education and recreational opportunities at the site.

Young at Heart | Active Adult Programming Galos Salt Cave

Salt for a longtime has been considered a symbol of friendship, eternity, wisdom, and health. The technology of building salt-iodine caves, patented in 108 countries, is based on the Black Sea salt, crystallized in natural conditions. The sea microclimate created inside the caves becomes an oasis of peace and relaxation. The first salt-iodine cave in the U.S. was built according to very strict technological rules. Considering the low level of iodine found in the air in the middle-eastern part of the U.S., the cave was erected in the biggest city Chicago, IL. Thanks to the efforts of specialists from the Ukraine and Poland, two caves were built, in which healing attributes are being confirmed by testing. The group will alternate between relaxing in the salt cave and eating lunch at The Jolly Inn. You must wear clean white socks and dress comfortably. register by 01/09.

Jeeves Saves the Day

The indefatigable Jeeves and his balmy employer Bertie Wooster return for an all-new adventure in the world premiere of JEEVES SAVES THE DAY, a new comedy by Margaret Raether, based on the works of P.G. Wodehouse. Jeeves and Bertie are back in an ALL-NEW WORLD PREMIERE! Once again, Bertie finds himself suffering the slings and arrows of misfortune at the hands of his relatives, caught between the magisterial machinations of his fierce Aunt Agatha and the plaintive pleadings of his cousin Egbert. Throw in the imperious Sir Roderick Glossup (who fully expects his daughter Honoria to save Bertie from his ill-advised bachelorhood) and you’ve got another priceless predicament that cannot be overcome…unless one calls upon the redoubtable Jeeves to save the day. Lunch before the show is at J Alexander’s Restaurant, choice of grilled chicken salad/ fish sandwich/cheeseburger/beverage/gratuity included. Register by 01/17.

Becoming Queen Elizabeth II

In this new historical portrayal held at Jacob Henry Mansion, historian Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., explores the life of Britain’s famous monarch, from her childhood, the abdication of her uncle, her marriage to a navy officer named Philip, her World War II service, and her struggle to balance her roles as queen and mother. Lunch is chicken breast with apricot sauce. Register by 02/19.

Axe Throwing

Move over bowling. Axe throwing is the new craze. It is actually a very old sport, but new to the urban environment. We will be going to Splinters Hangout in St. Charles. A typical space looks like an old warehouse with high ceilings, heavy-duty walls and chain-link fencing surrounding targets on the sides and top. On the wall is a wooden target with three varying sized and colored, concentric circles. Throwers take aim at the target and earn points depending on where their axes land. In a controlled environment with an axe-throwing “coach” looking over your shoulder, it’s actually an incredibly fun, social — and safe — way to spend an hour. We will be challenging the Wood Dale Park District! Lunch prior to the competition at Francesca’s by the River family style salad/two pastas/ dessert/beverage/ gratuity included. Register by 02/10.

Arts in Chinatown

Spend the day at the Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute learning how to make dumplings, and learning the art of paper cutting. The group will enjoy lunch together and free time in Chinatown. Register by 02/24.

Young at Heart | Active Adult Programming Kinky Boots

The Waa-Mu Show

This flashy, sassy, sexy story of big heels invading a small town shook Broadway and was universally adored by critics and audiences. Now it’s Paramount’s turn to try these shoes on for size. Charlie Price is a reluctant shoe maker. Lola is a fierce drag queen. These two could not be any more different, but when they find common ground in shoes, they see a whole new world of possibilities open up to them that will turn their small town upside down, and just might save Charlie’s failing shoe factory. Kinky Boots tears up the stage and never lets go. From its glorious costumes to its dizzyingly tall heels and songs you’ll be humming for days. No show on Broadway has captured what it means to do what you love and love what you do as much as Kinky Boots. Lunch is included prior to the show at the Paramount. Register by 04/08.

Back again due to popular demand! The Waa-Mu Show is Northwestern University’s own original musical, written, performed, and presented by Northwestern students. The Waa-Mu Show’s quirky name stands for the two organizations that banded together to present the first show in 1929, the Women’s Athletic Association (W.A.A.) and the Men’s Union (M.U.). As Northwestern’s oldest theatrical tradition, The Waa-Mu Show provides undergraduates with the unparalleled opportunity to create an original musical each year. Students serve as leaders in every aspect of development from conception through production to create a show exploring themes and stories that inspire them as college students, challenge them as musical theatre artists, and engage them with our surrounding communities. The Waa-Muu Show will not have a meal included. Register by 03/30.

Evita

Based on true events, Evita tells the story of Eva Perón’s rags-to-riches life as she goes from poor provincial child to First Lady of Argentina. Featuring some of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most iconic songs, including “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina,” this musical masterpiece won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The 1996 film adaptation was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning for Best Original Song. Lunch is included at Drury Lane prior to the show. Register by 04/20. Program
