esyka, Gregg, Gino, & Steve were born wild, grew up wild, and to this day: stay wild. Their music is not just music-- their passion and drive for life echo throughout each lyric as they bleed their souls to you whether it’s through insane vocals, disgusting guitar shredding, Earth shattering bass, or bombastic drums. The message is there and the message is simple: Stay Wild. Growing up on bands like Judas Priest, Motley Crüe, KISS, Manowar, and Metallica helped burn rock n’ roll and metal into their souls. This undying love for eclectic rock n’ roll evolved into their love for bands like Nine Inch Nails and artists like Lady Gaga. From a young age they each knew what their purpose was, and as their paths converged they knew it was for the shared destiny: to be the first true rockstars of the 21st Century. Jesyka grew up in the spotlight. Her musical theatre and classical background showed her discipline… but she got excited about the dark underground rock scene of NYC and broke all the rules. Now she’s a fierce wild child never seen without her 4 inch heels, fishnets, and spiked bra on… singin’ the next hit. Gregg was born and created a rock star. He was brought up on old school rock & metal bands, learning the best riffs before he could even pick up a guitar. Then, when the studio called his name, he put his blood, sweat, & tears into classical/metal guitar… and finding all the right sounds. Now, Gregg puts on his Jeffrey West skull boots, leather & chains, and takes the stage with his Les Paul like the badass he is. Gino is a gangster. After years of not giving a f***k, Gino remains true to his untamed, party hard lifestyle. You can always find him backstage in a cloud of smoke, with a can of red bull and a cigarette. Steve planned on a conventional behind the scenes life, until he got a taste of the dark side. One night out on the scene and he was hooked on the rock star lifestyle. His natural rhythm and flow drives the band’s intensity night after night. Steve bangs his drums pretty hard, but bangs the groupies even harder. Together, they are SYKA, here to blaze a new trail, break the barriers, and to live; not just exist. From the depths of their soul to yours, they share this burn to remind you: never lose your fire.

exclusive interview Introduce yourself to our readers on your back story of the “SYKA”. Hello! Thank you for having us! This is Gregg from SYKA. I play guitar and do back up vocals. Our singer and El Capitano, Jesyka, started the band in late 2012. After years of growing up in theater and dance, she knew it was time to start writing songs by herself, acoustically. It wasn’t until 2012 when she decided to forget about acoustic and to go full throttle with a full bad-ass rock ‘n roll band. She contacted me to play bass for the band in 2012. I said yes, and we played our first gig with Halestorm on New Years Eve 2012 at Croc Rock PA. Now, here we are today.

Now the crowd, how is the reaction from the crowd right before you perform and then when you exit the stage? The crowd is usually in awe in both positive and negative ways. We aren’t your typical ‘normal’ band. Visually, we stand out because we wear makeup, brand ourselves individually, and mostly because we have an exotic lead singer. Of course people think ‘GIMMICK’ right away before they hear the music. But when we leave the stage, people turn to each other and say, “Now that was a SHOW.” We aim to put on more than just a concert. We put on a show. Did you all just form as one or were you all part of other projects that molded together? Our bassist, Gino, and I came from the local NJ metal band Forbidden Territory. Jesyka recruited me, and I recruited Gino. Steve, our drummer, was recently recruited from the conservative world, and we conformed him quick. He kicks ass. He’s wild. Stay wild.

into a ‘scene’ because we can’t relate to any bands in the ‘scene.’ So we find our own open space where we fit, and where our fans, our Sykos, can feel part of the experience. What or who inspired you to make music? SYKA loves artists like Lady Gaga, Kiss, Metallica, Van Halen and Nine Inch Nails. Lady Gaga takes the crown for the word, Artist. She lives it. She is pure Art. We get inspired from her, Paul Stanley, and James Hetfield mainly. What are your highlighted moments in your career up to this point? No moments can be highlighted until we headline, and sell out the Garden. But the moments that are worth capturing, hence building our artistic integrity, are every time we meet a fan on the road. They are our glue, our Sykos. Whenever we can make a fans’ day, week, month, year, life, we take it in and say, “Wow, that’s what it’s all about.”

I like what SYKA brings to the music world, tell us about the experience so far? It’s incredible. The only artifact of life that we want to take part in is to bust our asses more than anyone out there in our shoes, and to show the world that Rock ‘n Roll is not dead. We will continue to be a Culture for our fans, and the World. Every show we play, every dive bar we conquer, only makes us stronger. We love paying our dues, and we know we will rise and take over. I can see you are rocking out of New York, how is the Rock scene there? Yes! It is very miniscule, but this miniscule scene is loyal and dedicated. We aim to create our own scene though. feeling tired lately? Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has many faces and because an estimated four million people who have it here in the United States (probably lots more), it needs to reviewed. Being tired all the time is generally its most conspicuous symptom but other symptoms may be present, including joint pain, low grade fever, headache and just feeling “yucky”! Sound familiar?

What exactly causes chronic fatigue? Ironically many doctors don’t even recognize this syndrome but we now know that it is linked to the Epstein-Barr and Cytomegalic viruses. They generally have enlarged lymph nodes in the neck area with repeated infections i.e. sinus, lower respiratory because they lower our resistance and interfere with “T” cell function. Now you know that you are not crazy!

1.

14 • BWD Magazine • www.bwdmagazine.com

Are there any long term problems? It’s important to get rid of these viruses because you don’t want to be tired and sick all the time. I constantly hear, “I’m sick of being sick all the time!” Also, there are long term consequences like Lupus Erythematosus, especially in women and Lymphoma, a malignant blood-lymph node cancer which are not on my top ten want list and a combo that I’m sure is not on your wish list either.

2.

How can we prevent and treat it? It probably is contagious, low grade but we are not sure. One study of a families was positive in 3 out of 5 of family members even though they lived together so there is probably a low grade degree of contagiousness. Getting ones rest and no alcohol are imperative because these viruses love both. Medications will not work, but Fucoidans (algae extract), Branched Chain Amino Acids, Lipoic Acid, and Reishi Mushroom extracts in combination are what I use which all synergistically stop viral replication and in doing

doing so resolve symptoms and long term consequences. One more thing. You cannot exercise this away and as a matter of fact, strenuous exercise will make it worse by suppressing your lymphocytes. That six pack will melt away into a “keg”.

The most important thing? It is imperative that you realize there is a Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and get treatment despite what your doctor says. From being called lazy, to a “Nut Case’s or Wing-Nut’s” is embarrassing enough and I have seen it all. Don’t be self-conscious because it is real and have the courage to stand up to these Nay-Sayers. I call them IDIOTS! After all, what’s more important, your wellbeing or their ignorance?

road man

o matter who you are, or where you are on your life journey, music always wields epiphanic power. It can mend the sick, enliven the downtrodden, and give direction to the lost. Storytelling singer-songwriter Jon Petronzio is a former child piano prodigy who has blossomed into a virtuoso musician highly regarded in the jam band scene. But seven years ago, after he established himself with an acclaimed career as a professional musician, Jon began tinkering with some musical ideas that would lead to the most transformative time of his life. The results of this profoundly life-changing time is his solo project, Road Man, which brims with an invigorating mix of funk, blues, reggae, mystical enlightenment, introspection, and environmentalism. He calls the debut album from this creative outlet, “Light At The Speed Of Life.” “I describe this music as my light at the speed of life. Life is an incredible gift... we are afforded only a finite span of time to learn, grow and accomplish something meaningful,” he says. “I believe I may have found my voice and my purpose through the unfolding of this project - something that’s taken seven years to reach completion”.

The collection of songs resulting range from this illuminating adventure recall the work of Bob Marley and Michael Franti because of their balmy, groove-driven spiritual purposefulness. Some highlights are the euphoric reggae of “Who Do You Love” which includes the gloriously redemptive lyrics: But have you ever wanted something better, but the answer is hardly clear/Have you ever wanted someone so badly, but you can’t seem to leave your fears behind; the hypnotically bluesy “Chosen”; and the centered, laidback gospel swagger of “The Meeting.” “This album is seven very powerful years of my life documented in song,” Jon says. “I’m not the same man I was when I started this project. I had to get out of the way and let these messages come out honestly and in their own time, and it’s changed me. I’ve seen how magical life can be, how much hope there is out there, and now I want Road Man to provide light at the end of the tunnel for others.”

Jonathan Petronzio grew up as something of a natural musician. By age 12, after studying jazz and classical music with a highly regarded piano teacher, he was earning money playing ragtime music at an ice cream parlor. Jon would go on to earn a BA Music Education from Ithaca College School of Music. Upon graduation, he formed the funk band Revision. That band recorded six albums, averaged 150 shows a year. Recently, Jon’s been touring and recording with future roots music innovators John Brown’s Body. He’s toured extensively throughout the country with the group, sharing the stage with acts such as, Sublime, Groundation, Freddy McGregor, Galactic, SOJA, and the Easy Star All-Stars, among many others. The two albums he’s recorded with the band have both topped Billboard and iTunes charts at #1. Road Man was created away from career hoopla, and it basically created itself in three distinct phases over seven years. The first phase began with Jon learning recording software for his own edification; his explorations yielded upwards of 250 demo ideas. The second phase involved him consciously whittling that body of work down to 15 songs, and tracking the finished music and co-producing with Alan Evans of Soulive and an all-star lineup by way of John Brown’s Body. The third phase of this process, writing lyrics to the finished music, was the most daunting and profound. “That was something of an existential journey. There I was with all this finished and completely produced music, and it was like singing karaoke to my own songs,” he recalls, laughing good-naturedly. Writing the words for tracks while holed up in his Ithaca home, alone in the dead of winter, he went on something of a spiritual adventure tapping into his subconscious, exploring medicinal ceremonial rituals, and playing intriguing William Burroughs cut-up exercises with a set of magnetic poetry words and phrases. . 16 • BWD Magazine • www.bwdmagazine.com

all hands on deck DJ SPOTLIGHT Recently we had a chance to get together with long time platinum selling Texas artist Lil Flip. In this exclusive indepth interview Lil Flip breaks it down from his beginnings in the game to doing heavy numbers in the streets, his dealings with major labels, present endeavors, and a peek behind the curtain of what’s to come. This is a must read for anyone trying to understand the “industry”. Enjoy.

MONTHLY FEATURE So how long were you actually an independent artist doing it on that level before a label came to you? I’ve been putting out independent albums since the first EP project that I put out; like in middle school bro. I went to the same middle school as Too Low, and for a lot of people who don’t know Too Low, he used to rap with Scarface. He’s the rapper from a song called ‘The funky brother’ or ‘The funky little n****’ you know?
