Editor contact@bwgbangkok.org Advertising advertising@bwgbangkok.org Please note that the deadline for advertisements is the 5th of the month prior to issue. Please contact advertising@bwgbangkok for more information. PLEASE NOTE : Contact is published as a service to our members to keep them informed of news and events within BWG. The accuracy of other information cannot be guaranteed and is not an endorsement by the group. This also applies to advertisements that are included in Contact in order to cover some of the production costs. Every effort is made to produce Contact in good time to reach members before the first scheduled meeting, but the editor cannot be held responsible for unavoidable delays caused by circumstance beyond their control. It is the members’ own responsibility to know when meetings are scheduled and to contact someone to check if any changes have been made. Members are also asked to bear in mind when booking actives that most venues are not deemed suitable for children over six months of age and to make appropriate child minding arrangements.
Chairman’s Message Greetings from the UK, where it appears we have more BWG members enjoying the pleasures of home than we have in BKK at the moment. Many thanks to those members still flying the flag for us and running drop in coffee and lunches, while we are recharging our batteries and visiting family and friends. While we are enjoying a less frantic time can I remind you to check your mailerites for up coming events. I know it seems a long while away, but we are looking for members who would be happy to join a sub committee to organise the annual Ploenchit “Bacon Butties” event, to be held at Patana School on November 30th. It is not an onerous task, as all that is required is coordinating the shopping for supplies and then setting up a rota of helpers for the day. It is always a great fun day, and enables us to help raise money for Thai charities. Please contact one of the committee if you feel you can spare some time for this, it would be very much appreciated. I hope you all enjoy your month of August wherever you maybe and I look forward to seeing everyone again in September.

Ailsa. August is a month when if it is hot weather it is really very hot. Gertrude Stein.
Welcome to the August issue of Contact which is slightly smaller than usual due to many of our members being away and therefore contributions are slightly reduced. There are however many important alerts for exciting forthcoming events so this is the time to organise diaries for the next few months. I’m enjoying time in the UK at the moment with family and friends as I know many of you are - we’ve even had a graduation to attend which was a very proud moment to see our youngest son gain his Masters degree! Happy reading and enjoy the rest of the summer.

Bookworms - August
Unnatural causes by Dr Richard Shepherd This book is the memoir of one of one of Britain’s top forensic pathologists - Dr Richard Shepherd. It chronicles his prolific career as well as his personal life and how certain milestones helped and hindered his career. It’s an unputdownable record of an extraordinary life, a unique insight into a remarkable profession and above all a powerful and reassuring testament to lives cut short. Dr Shepherd faced serial killers, natural disasters, perfect murders and freak accidents in the pursuit of truth. Just six of us met to discuss Dr Shepherds book. A comment ‘well I would never have picked this book’ serves to highlight what book clubs are about because this book was enjoyed by all of us and gained our highest scores ever. A couple of us struggled to get started but soon got over that . None of us were surprised when Dr Shepherd noted that he had suffered PTSD after we had read the history of some of the cases he dealt with. He goes into some detail about the forensic process which is interesting and at times in depth - like SIDS and shaken baby syndrome and the reasons the victims of an accident on the Thames had their hands cut off and reconnected during the post mortem period. It’s a well recommended read. One of our members suggested that those who enjoyed this book might also like - All that remains -a life in death by Professor Sue Black
Scores - 8/10 from 3 people who read the book. 9/10 - from 2 people who rad the book
