Editor contact@bwgbangkok.org Advertising advertising@bwgbangkok.org Please note that the deadline for advertisements is the 5th of the month prior to issue. Please contact advertising@bwgbangkok for more information. PLEASE NOTE : Contact is published as a service to our members to keep them informed of news and events within BWG. The accuracy of other information cannot be guaranteed and is not an endorsement by the group. This also applies to advertisements that are included in Contact in order to cover some of the production costs. Every effort is made to produce Contact in good time to reach members before the first scheduled meeting, but the editor cannot be held responsible for unavoidable delays caused by circumstance beyond their control. It is the members’ own responsibility to know when meetings are scheduled and to contact someone to check if any changes have been made. Members are also asked to bear in mind when booking actives that most venues are not deemed suitable for children over six months of age and to make appropriate child minding arrangements.
Chairman’s Message How did it get to “the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness...” without us realising. Hard to believe that we are now on the countdown to Christmas, a strange and new experience for many of us this year, as we will be unable to join our family in other countries. However we will still be able to celebrate and enjoy some of our normal BWG Christmas events.
We are intending to hold our Christmas Coffee at the Ambassador’s Residence, date to be confirmed. So keep your eyes peeled as numbers will be restricted, so prompt reply will be necessary. We are also negotiating a Christmas lunch venue, so hopefully some normality will continue. Watch this space!
Ailsa Kneath We are still running our monthly events, which are sent to you via mailerite and Face Book. However Mahjong are looking for more people as some are still stuck in their home countries, if you are interested please contact jane.rodgers@btopenworld.com
I look forward to meeting you all at some point in the next month, in the meantime, stay fit and healthy.
Thought for the month:-
Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make, makes you. Choose wisely.
Roy T Bennett.
Welcome to the October issue of Contact Magazine and I hope that you are all keeping well wherever you are in the world. I’m still stuck in the UK and all of a sudden it seems as though someone has turned the heating off. Gone are the shorts and T-Shirts and the jeans, jumpers and boots are back. I very much miss the warmth of Bangkok and cannot wait to return. This issue of Contact contains lots of lovely photos of recent coffee mornings and also the September activity which was a trip to the National Museum. It certainly looks like a good time was had by the ladies who attended these events. www.bwgbangkok.org

Bookworms - October
The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes The title of this book is based on a poem- The Giver of Stars by @Amy Lowell Hold your soul open for my welcoming. Let the quiet of your spirit bathe me With its clear and rippled coolness. That loose limbed and weary, I find rest, Outstretched upon your peace, as on a bed of ivory. This book is set in depression era America and based on the story of a group of women delivering books as part of Eleanor Rossevelt’s new ‘traveling library’. It is a story of five extraordinary women and their remarkable journeys through the mountains of Kentucky and beyond. The story centres on Alice Wright who marries an American and runs away from a stifling life in England only to find herself in a claustrophobic life in America. This time her more successful escape is to join 4 other women who became the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky. Though they face all kinds of dangers in a landscape that is at times breathtakingly beautiful and at other times brutal they are committed to their job of bringing books to people who have never had any. This is a true story rooted in America’s past. A funny, heart breaking, richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond. This book was well received by the bookclub ladies ‘I liked the way it was written and the characters and friendships’ ‘ it was just right’ ‘I loved it, it surprised me‘ ‘ I didn’t think it would be interesting but it was’
Scores: 1 - 8/10, 6 - 9/10
It’s definitely a recommend.
Queen Bee by Jane Fallon This book was chosen because it had good reviews and was said to be funny. It should be funny after all she is Ricky Gervais’ partner, right? Wrong! Jane Fallon’s 10th novel is set in a culdesac full of wealthy society people with plenty of plastic surgery, snobbishness and an affair thrown in to complete the picture. It’s told from the point of view of a newly separated single mother and her struggles to live in such an environment. One member of our group enjoyed it and gave it a 6/10 score. My score was 3/10. Other members didn’t read it.
Next meeting is Tuesday 6th October at Urbana , Lang Suan at 10am
