Chairman’s Message

Hello Everyone, We did a couple of Wednesday lunches recently and numbers did pick up on the second one. Next week our second list will have their second vaccinations and so we will have a coffee morning on the 14th October at the FCCT in Maneeya Centre Building and on the 28th we will have a lunch at Bistro 33. Please come along if you are comfortable to. Christmas is still up in the air with current restrictions. Obviously we would like to have a Christmas coffee and lunch, but how do you feel? Any suggestions welcome. Please keep safe and keep sane, please give feedback and think about contributing to this magazine. Liz

Hi Ladies and I hope that you are all well wherever you are in the world. If you have any articles to share for the magazine, maybe related to what you all have been up to over the past few months (holidays, baking, new hobbies etc), then please email your contributions to me at becky.adderley@btinternet.com All contributions will be be very gratefully received and these will really help to preserve and strengthen our links as a BWG community.

A Thank You from Little Birds Thanks to the generosity of members of BWG assisted by a donation from BCTFN, Little Birds volunteers were able to distribute food and hygiene parcels to the needy young adults in the community. Many thanks for all donations which were most gratefully received. From Usanee Janngeon and John MacTaggart and all at Foundation Little Birds Youth Network

From: Kimberly Quinley of STEP AHEAD Re: Donation from BWG Gale, I am sorry I have been so slow in responding. We had a major fire at our Step Ahead office in July and I have been fully engaged trying to get all the repairs done so the inspector can give us approval to use the second floor again. Also, with the increase in Covid-19 Delta cases-- our staff have been flooded with requests for help. It has been an intense few months. I also want to thank you for your generosity! We are so grateful to you and the British Women's Group. We need your donation more than ever! I am excited to share with you our newly updated website. Please click on the link below to learn how we have grown! www.stepaheadthailand.org Also, please follow us on Facebook or Instagram! Please stay safe and well! Best regards Kimberley

Book Club

Liz Dobson

Last month’s read was The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce.

Harold nips out one morning to post a letter, leaving his wife hoovering upstairs, he has no idea that he is about to walk from one end of England to the other. He has no hiking boots or map. All he knows is he must keep walking to see his dying friend Queenie. I was annoyed at his defeatist attitude, as if 65 is old! And he made so little progress! As he continues though, we learn more about his unhappy life and why he must make amends with Queenie. One reader found it a bit simplistic and predictable. I would say almost sentimental and twee. One member enjoyed it when he travelled through places familiar to her and I got out my AA road atlas and followed his route (the map in the book was hopeless). Most people enjoyed how his life enfolded very much and gave it 8/10. Two of us gave it 7/10. As one review summed it up “There’s no doubt that it’s an original, quietly courageous testament to the inhuman effort of being normal.”

We are currently reading A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James or alternatively The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. We will meet on Tuesday 5th October at 10.30am in Trattoria Delina in Soi Ruam Rudee and may be joined later by others for lunch. For November we are reading Destination Wedding by Diksha Basu, shortlisted for the 2021 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction.

Pronunciation Poem This poem was kindly sent in by Gale Bailey MBE I take it that you already know Of tough and bough and cough and dough? Others may stumble, but not you, On hiccough, thorough, laugh and through. Well done! And now you wish, perhaps To learn of less familiar traps? Beware of heard, a dreadful word, That looks like beard and sounds like bird. And dead - - it’s said like bed not bead - And for goodness’ sake don’t call it deed! Watch out for meat and great and threat (They rhyme with suite and straight and debt). A moth is not the moth in mother, Nor both in bother, broth in brother. And here is not a match for there Nor dear and fear for bear and pear. And then there’s dose and rose and lose - Just look them up - - and goose and choose, And cork and work and card and ward, And font and front and word and sword, And do and go and thwart and cart - Come, come I’ve hardly made a start. A dreadful language? Man alive. I’d mastered it when I was five.

Auntie Gale knows EVERYBODY! By Gale Bailey MBE This was the quote made by my niece Vicky when I was looking after her on a teacher’s day many years ago. I took her into Leicester City Centre where I had worked for 16 years and saw many old faces I knew which quite astounded her. My friends in Bangkok have often commented that wherever we go, there is always someone who knows me! WELL – on arrival at Frankfurt airport (all excited and emotional too) it seemed a long hike to get to passport control/immigration but all OK and into baggage reclaim! What a performance as I needed a trolley as had 3 suitcases (one full of stuff for the Hegelers) I had no coins to put in the machine to get a trolley and my card would not work either. A young American chap also wanted a trolley and tried to help me too but he was having no luck too! I saw an employee in a hi-res jacket so went to him but he said – Not my job – see airport staff but there were none around anyway! Me and the young American lad shrugged our shoulders wondering what to do next when I heard a voice call ‘Gale’ – OMG surely there must be another Gale but no and it was Till Mordstadt! Till lives in Bangkok and used to live at Floraville and he said he recognized my voice as he was busy trying to get his dog sorted. He was an angel in disguise and paid a Euro for my trolley and also for the American lad. I gave him a big hug but he was rushing and so was I, told him Jane was waiting for me after all these months apart. The next bit you all know about but WOW – how lucky was I as not sure how I could have managed! Thanks Till – drinks all round when we meet up in Bangkok – whenever that will be!

The first Wednesday Lunch for such a long time. Hopefully there will be many more to come!
