alt rock music ruled the world. Bands like Reuben, Hundred Reasons, Hell Is For Heroes and Meet Me in St Louis were on the throne. Well, during their reign, there were other lesser known bands dining at the same grandiose banqueting table. And Kerbdog were pretty much constantly at the rulers’ side by royal appointment. Well, tonight, they’re back to their regal best reminding those who were there during the altrock age of just how bloody magnificent they were; and initiating those too young to remember in the ways of the royal court of St Alt. A typically brilliant set including Mexican Wave, Pointless, Severed and, of course, Sally only serve to further underline just how bloody important, seminal and influential this bunch of loveable Irish rogues were. And there’s even some cheeky new material which ensures the legacy will continue as a delicious subculture long after the present soulless reign of gangster rap and boys with guitars pap has been overturned and Taylor Swift et al hanged, drawn and quartered.

A full field. Full of beer-filled people. Full of love. Full of fun. Full of mischief. Full of smiles. And a stage full of reels, jigs, riffs, savage rhythms, incendiary hypontic hooks, mind-melting musical catchphrases and bewitching, bewildering bombast. What more could you want on a delicious sunny, summer’s evening? ASIWYFA are something of an enigma. Predominantly instrumental post rock with explosive celtic underwear, they captivate, enthrall, engross and explode all at the same time. And it’s like nothing else on earth. Truly original. Truly breathtaking. Truly joyous. But always with the feeling there’s a darker side underneath the sunny exterior. Not in a bad way, but an edge. A steel. Which all adds to the excitement and intrigue. An absolute must for any budding festival curator. Wow.

There’s been an Oceansize-shaped hole in the world since their tragic demise 4 or 5 years ago. There have been the occasional draft of ersatz methadone in the shape of ex front man Mike Vennart’s other side project - the hauntingly brilliant British Theatre, but in the main, it’s been a cold, empty place full of cold turkey and cravings. The hardcore addicts have had to make do with glimpses of Vennart in his ‘other job’ standing stage left tucked in amongst Biffy Clyro’s backline. Until a few weeks ago. Then, a chink of light. A new drug. A better drug? Monsieur Vennart only went and released The Demon Joke - a totally brilliant debut ‘solo’ album including some familiar collaborators. It would be as disingenuous as it is inaccurate to attach too much ‘Oeansizeness’ to the work and the project: but it is inevitable. So that brings us on to this evening’s spectacle. Who will Mr V bring with him? Will he? Won’t he? Surely he must? As he leads his band on stage in front of the busiest Axiom tent of the weekend, a warm familiarity starts to spread from the heart outwards. Gambler. And Durose. Two parts of the old team. Wow. And augmented by Denzel (ex-Ginger Wildheart) driving the drum stool. And from the off, it’s like getting back together with a first love after a few years. It feels exciting but kind of familiar. In a good way. Kicking off with the first three tracks off the new album in order, the performance is technically perfect. The harmonies totally on point, the musicianship flawless and the drumming almost inhumanly quantised. Three more tracks from the Demon Joke complete the set. But in there are two, count ‘em OS tunes. The mighty Build us a Rocket then... and, to end things the impossibly beautiful Music For a Nurse. It truly doesn’t get any better than this. Ever.

The sun is still out.The beer, cider, White Russians and all manner of other intoxicants flowing liberally. So it’s the perfect time to throw some intelligent, wry, sophisticated and smile-inducing pop rock. And those likeable miscreants in Tellison are the perfect prescription. Looking as happy as the half cut crowd, the band are obviously thoroughly enjoying themselves as they career through a delicious and shimmeringly summery set of sass and knowing, clever mischief. Freud Links the Teeth and the Heart is an absolute highlight, not just of their set, but of the whole weekend. Witty, sardonic, heartfelt and challenging but always accessible. A perfect set for a perfect day.

Off the cuff live sets. Secret or surprise collaborations. Acoustic sing-a-longs in the forest, And Camp Reuben. Set up to mark the memory of the seminal and frankly remarkable alt kings Reuben, there is an almost religious reverence in this little tent in the corner of a field in the middle of buggering nowhere. And tonight, after a hard day rocking and definitely reeling, Andrew Groves from the brilliant Arcane Roots is the high priest conducting the Reuben mass. Completely unplugged and unsupported, everything Groves touches turns to gold. He reimagines AR material and the cross legged congregation hum and sing along with every

beautiful and touching syllable. As is fitting, he treats the gathered souls to a couple of Reuben covers as well. Death of A Star is nailed perfectly, but it’s Enemy (which Andrew dedicates to recently departed drummer and long-term buddy Daryl Atkins) that tugs at the heartstrings more poignantly.He tries and bails on a new song (I think called Creeping) but it matters not a jot. This is not only a festival highlight, but one of those life highlights that’ll live long in every emotionally tinkered with memory of anyone privileged enough to be here. Groves ends with a splendidly crowd-accompanied version of You Are, before being cajoled and begged to return for one last hurrah. He obliges and sends everyone emotionally wrung and covered in goosebumps back to their tents with Hell and High Water ringing in ears and echoing in heart chambers. A truly magical moment and a perfect end to a brilliant first day. Amen.

Not too much to say really. A solid and unremarkable performance peppered with tunes that everyone kind of knows. They haven’t set the world on fire as a band. They do very little wrong. They go through the motions. And tonight’s performance is the perfect summation of the band itself. Not bad. Kind of OK.

I struggle with generic metalcore. And Bury Tomorrow tread the line between the generic and the genetic very finely. There’s the classic post-hardcore Alexis on Fire combo of clean meets dirty vocals. Big bass drops (although, once again, the shocking front of house in The Cave does everything it can to render the sound to mid-range mush). there’s energy, abrasiveness, showmanship and some half decent songs. Danni Winter-Bates is an eloquent, bewitching front man who controls the throbbing crowd like a cheery boot camp commandant. But there feels like there’s still something missing. Some genius spark of originality. Maybe Jamie Osman, who has taken the lads under his very effective and protective wing will conjure up something. They need it. This evening’s show is full of fire and brimstone, but you’releft with the feeling of leaving a restaurant having enjoyed the food but looking back at your plate and realising you’ve left half of it. Weird. That all said, the performance is out of the top drawer and the crowd seem to dig in voraciously. There’s even a chaotic and joyous stage invasion to finish things off as the band manfully plough through the set closer and crowd pleaser Lionheart.

Most of the enthusiastic crowd don’t seem too bothered by the sonic sludge and chant and sing back dutifully as Archambault growls and barks his way through an emotional tumble dryer of a set (it may be the PA, or the industrial amount of cider and White Russians I’ve consumed, but his voice sounds rougher and growlier than ever this afternoon - a marked difference to their recent stunning performance at Download Festival). An all round top quality performance from such an important band.
And that about wraps it up. 2000 Trees has been, undoubtedly one of the very best festivals I’ve ever been to. The vibe, the site, the bill, the White Russians. And most importantly the people. Real people. Here for the music. Not for the tick on a list. The quality of the bands this year has been extraordinary and the only problem I had was not being able to fit in as many as I’d have loved to. I did catch full sets and fragments of others that I was either too pissed or too engrossed to make any notes or to have taken any shit photos of. So here’s a quick gallop through some of the highlights not covered in this tome:

Human Pyramids: A 40 odd strong mass math collective with Paul Russell from the excellent Axes as the ever-smiling musical director. Amazing stuff with horns, strings and a choir. Spellbinding.

Future of The Left: As alternative and choppy as ever. Punk values through and through but backed with sophisticated and tight musicianship. And Falco being hos normal obdurate, snarling bastard self throughout. Great stuff.

We Are The Ocean:
Unfair to call it dad rock. But dad rock. Bloody good dad rock though. Liam Crombie’s vocals have moved up a
notch as the former post-hardcore screamers mellow into a fully formed proper rock band. Bloody impressive.

We Were Promised Jet Packs: jaunty, power pop rock with a jagged edge. A packed out tent collectively losing its shit to big songss with big hooks. Best band name of the festival. Nice.

St Pierre Snake Invasion: Sweary fucking cunts with grins wider than Nigella Lawsons thong. Fun. Fucked up. Fuckers.

The Computers: Never been a fan. But my, how they’ve changed. As may my opinion from now on.A kind of besuited fucked up mad dystopian future Blues Brothers led by ever charming and charismatic Alex Kershaw. Rock and roll.

Pulled Apart By Horses: Sheer energy, anger, dynamic, balls and explosiveness. Chaotic but mesmerising. Stunning. Feed The Rhino: Huge, hairy testicles. With teeth.Big noise. Big heart. Big pits. Big crowd. Big danglers. Big.

As a couple of footnotes This whole thing is for fun only. No money changes hands. No industry types are involved (even my mates). It’s not official, endorsed or licensed. My ratings are obviously purely personal and in the case of festivals they’re going to be naturally quite high as it’s the bands and acts I actually want to go and see that I generally do go and see. So I’m kind of biased. Not that that’s really that important. This is meant to be nothing more than the view of the festival through the very pissed eyes of one individual. No payment, payola, favours, corporate or record company money is involved. It’s a hobby. So if you disagree with some of my (or all of my opinions) then that’s cool. The pictures are all shot from my iPhone and then tinkered and tidied up a bit in photoshop. They’re not clean, anodyne, perfectly focused, framed or metered. You can get plenty of those elsewhere.
