designer ~ Georges Fouquet. Prague too became a favourite city, where I happily wandered around the old town, marvelling at what had been the home of Alphonse Mucha and indeed I remember spending a complete day in the Mucha Museum absorbing the story of his life and studying his creations. Jewellery creation is a very personal affair. When I look back on the design influences which have inspired me, I find that the Ari D. Norman design philosophy is composed of many elements which originate from events and experiences from my past and which in effect add up to being the story of my life.

After the completion of my formal education, I embarked on adventurous journeys around the world visiting the Far East, India, North and South America, Scandinavia and Europe. My travels awoke in me an excitement and appreciation of contrasting cultural expression. As I travelled I was excited and delighted by the varied handicrafts displayed in the different countries.

Whilst living in Belgium, at an early age, I was enthralled by the Art Nouveau decorative interiors, which could be seen in Brussels and Antwerp. In my youth I visited Paris several times and was most impressed by the beautiful station. Art Nouveau ironwork outside each and every metro stati My fascination with the past led me to seek out original antique moulds for glass objects made in Victorian times and I adorned such glass pieces with sterling silver trellis work mirroring the feel of the magnificent Belle Epoque era.

In addition I visited the Carnavalet Museum that displayed the original, stunning Art Nouveau exterior and interior of a jewellery shop designed by Alphonse Mucha when he went into partnership with a great Art Nouveau

Whilst visiting the workshop of a master Mexican silversmith nick named “el mexicano”. I found myself inspired to modify some of his existing pieces in to my own creations; for example taking the swan neck of a salt and pepper shaker and turning it into the graceful handle of a letter opener.

In Taxco, Mexico I was drawn to the silver articles crafted by its many silversmiths who produced both bold and delicate pieces using the traditional methods passed on from father to son for many generations. In India I marvelled at the skill of the semi-precious stone cutters of Agra who still to this day cut semi-precious stones and set them in intricate patterns in white marble just as their forefathers did hundreds of years ago when decorating the Taj Mahal.

Before setting out on my travels my father always advised me to search in each country to try and find unique items that were made there. He said “Bring back a few samples son”. Being a diligent son seeking approval I took his words very seriously. Very soon my family home began to fill up with mysterious and exciting packages containing musical instruments, batik, stone ornaments, Mexican sweaters, jeans, onyx chess sets, inlaid turtle shell jewellery from Sri Lanka, semi-precious stones set in marble boxes from India, jewellery and much more. When I finally returned home my father and I carefully sifted through the many varied treasures in the sitting room which had become a true "Aladdin’s cave".

A dazzling array of international handicrafts; Hand carved tiger eye hippopotamus from Hong Kong, hand carved stone figurine from India, turtle shell boxes with silver inlay from Sri Lanka, cast statues from Thailand, wooden flute from Peru, cloth stuffed toy donkey from Ecuador, abalone encrusted lion and fish statue giftware from Mexico, hand carved onyx necklace from Mexico, hand painted papier mache lion from Mexico, hand painted tree bark picture from Mexico, onyx table from Mexico.

Seeing the Ta j Mahal bathed in the light of a full moon I was fascinated by the delicate and intricate semi-precious stone hand set mosaics set in its marble. Nearby I sought out the families of stone cutters who descended directly from those that had adorned the Ta j Mahal centuries before. Resulting in a beautifully unique collection of white and black marble boxes hand set with semi-precious stones in patterns reflecting the beauty of the Ta j Mahal.

From this vast array the only pieces which sparked commercial interest from the many retail outlets that we approached was for silver jewellery from Mexico. Thus my journey into the world of silver began some forty years ago. Initially, I travelled to Mexico five or six times a year staying for two or three weeks at a time, returning with suitcases full of ethnic Mexican silver jewellery. After the jewellery was processed by the London Assay office we packed it into the boot of my father’s car which became a familiar sight driving up and down the vibrant King’s Road, Chelsea.

Taxco handmade identity bracelet which I presented to my father in 1974 and subsequently also presented the same model to both my sons, Lee and Adam.

Examples of ethnic Mexican silver jewellery handmade in Taxco. In fact the owl and the bird pendants became much loved pieces worn by my mother.

Shopkeepers would come running out from their establishments stopping our car and asking for more of this and more of that and demanding to examine any new arrivals. After one or two years of trading in this manner, my creative spirit became inspired. I felt the need to design a unique collection of silver jewellery and gift items, rather than simply purchasing what was already available. My inspiration was the beauty I saw in Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, these three became the basic building blocks of our design philosophy.

A selection of the early pieces created by Ari D. Norman which convey the romance and excitement of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.

Without question, be it my first designs or the ones strewn across my desk as I write this, I built a business out of what inspired me, the adventure of the Victorian era, the romance of Art Nouveau, and the liberated spirit of Art Deco. Even now my emotions still stir when I think of the spirit and people of these eras. Imagining the life they led and the sights they saw still evokes great passion within. Combine these influences with modern taste, add the British hallmark, and I truly believe our creations are destined to be treasured antiques of tomorrow.

In homage to all that has inspired me, throughout this catalogue you will find what I like to call the ABC’s of the Ari D Norman brand and family. Each letter of the alphabet below is dedicated to the many influences that have and continue to have creative influence on Ari D Norman:

y mother gave birth to four daughters and then entered her fifth pregnancy and my father out of frustration at not having a son, chose Sarah as my name. Then December 8th, 1947 I was born and

clearly I was no Sarah. I was named Leon Daniel Norman; Leon in honour of my grandfather Leibish, and Daniel because my father wanted me to be like Daniel of “Daniel and the Lions”; wishing me to be as strong as a lion and yet able to live unharmed amongst them.

Being Jewish in London, I experienced Anti-Semitism from an early age. For example at age 13, I well remember our music teacher calling on the five Jewish boys in the class, to come to the front of the classroom to face 32 fellow pupils and try and make us sing Christmas carols! I soon felt like part of a “minority” and in turn I identified with the other “minorities” of the world. I especially connected with the Jewish people and in particular with Israel. At age 14, after reading the book Exodus, by Leon Uris but, more importantly coming to terms with being the only son of a man who lost his father in Auschwitz and whose family lost over 600 members to the Nazis, I swore to myself to never be “a good little Jewish boy" – I would be strong, stand tall and fight despite the odds. Thus I changed my name Leon to its Hebrew equivalent Ari, which translates literally to lion. It was at this time that my strong sense of justice, independence and rebellion were born. The English lion from the UK Coat of Arms

When I review the pervading symbolism of the lion in my life I detect the hand of fate. I can imagine the face of fate grinning down on me some forty years ago, at a youth bearing the name of the king of the jungle trekking through the hills of Mexico and discovering a creative passion for silver.

Lion statue presented to me by my father

I can imagine the grin of fate turning into a big smile as my passion led to the development of a vast collection of sterling silver jewellery and gifts which I passionately displayed at over eight hundred international exhibitions. Whilst rushing round the world I am greatly aided by my British passport with the English lion proudly blazoned on its cover which at all times I carry close to my heart. Then I hear faint chuckling as the big smile of fate erupts into laughter as the energetic youth strongly advocates the British hallmarking system with its definitive lion stamp symbolising British silver across the four corners of the world. It seems there was no escaping fate; the ethos of the lion was and still is inextricably interwoven with my destiny.

HISTORY

1908 – 1914

1932

In 1908 searching for work, Leibish Nussbaum, my grandfather, left his hometown of Bielsko Biala, now a part of Poland. He travelled to the city of Antwerp in Belgium and sought work in the diamond workshops located there.

Leibish Nussbaum

Bielsko Bala In Antwerp he learnt the art of diamond cleaving, only returning to his wife and children in Galicia, at the outbreak of WW1 in 1914.

1940

Sigmund worked with his father painstakingly scouring the floor on hands and knees to recover any small fragments of diamonds.

Sigmund Nussbaum as a boy Aged 12, Sigmund Nussbaum, my father, only son of Leibish Nussbaum saw a movie that was to inspire him for the rest of his life, called Trader Horn.

Antwerp 1918 - 1925

Bielsko Biala became part of Poland and Leibish moved back to the Kingdom of Belgium. In Antwerp he established his own diamond cleaving workshop, allowing him to later send for his wife and children.

This movie kindled the idea in Sigmund’s mind that it would be better to find ones own diamonds at source in Africa.

In 1940 the Germans invaded Belgium and the Nussbaum family fl ed to the south of France, known at the time as “Free France”. During the exodus Sigmund became separated from his family and whilst attempting to find them he found himself amongst British troops on the beaches of Calais. There he boarded a ship believing it was bound for the south of France, however, its destination was England. He desperately tried to get off the ship when he found out, but was held back by people he had befriended and told it was too late. Landing in Dover, Sigmund decided the fastest way to get home was to join the British Army. He joined as a signaller driver in the Royal Artillery and was instructed to change his surname to a non-Jewish sounding name in case he was captured. Sigmund became Sidney and he chose the name Norman to replace Nussbaum. He often told me that, when presented pen and paper by his Sergent to chose a new family name, that his mind dwelt on creating a positive future. He thought of two things; first was Julius Ceasar's quote "venie vidi vinci" from when he invaded Britain and second was the battle of hastings and the Norman invasion.

Free France was far from that. Many Jewish refugees were rounded up by the French. In 1942 Leibish Nussbaum was amongst those sent first to the French holding cam of Caseneuil in Lot-et-Garonne region and then to Drancy on the outskirts of Paris.

WWII ends and the newly named, Sidney Norman travelled to the small French village of Monbaus in British uniform. Where he found his mother living together with a few other family members and learned of the fate of his beloved father.

Within days he was transported to Auschwitz and murdered on arrival. Ironically Auschwitz (Oswiecim in Polish) concentration camp, was located just a few kilometres from the original family home, in Bielsko Biala, Poland.

HISTORY

1946 – 1955

After his discharge from the army Sidney Norman opened a modern diamond cleaving workshop in Hatton Garden London and in addition a diamond tool company and a musical box company.

Sidney at trade exhibition in Olympia London promoting music boxes and diamond cutting tools. During this period, in an effort to break the then monopoly of the De Beers Diamond Group over the rough diamond market, Sidney attempted to get into the distribution side of the diamond industry. This led to numerous difficulties and obstructions both from the De Beers Group and the British authorities.

1956 – 1960

My father pursued his dream of finding his own diamond mine and relocated the whole family to Liberia, West Africa, and in 1956 we established a family home in Monrovia Liberia where my mother became a member of the Parents National Education Union and very ably taught my four sisters and I.

1960

Phyllis, my mother, returned to London with my four sisters and I so that we could enter the British educational system. My father remained behind and was finally rewarded by Liberia’s President Tubman for being the man who discovered that Liberia had its own diamonds. In recognition of this achievement he was granted an alluvial diamond mining concession along a 20 mile stretch of the Lofa river located in the jungle.

Letter from British Consulate in Genoa

In 1965 I spent a year training for life on Kibbutz at the David Eder Farm in Sussex and then on Kibbutz Yiftach in Israel.

In 1970, for work experience as part of my civil engineering degree, I joined my father in the jungles of Liberia. This was exactly when a rich diamond deposit was discovered and a lawless boom town sprung up, aptly named Congo Hill. Workers had no salary as such. I would hand out 2 cups of rice a day and a bag of potentially diamond bearing gravel at the end of the week. If they found any rough diamonds my father and I would try and buy them back. Ari the Civil Engineer Here you can see my and diamond hunter father in fierce negotiations. on Congo Hill!

HISTORY

In 1964 at the age of 16, I left my school and home, "unannounced" and hitchhiked across Europe with my friend Yehuda, intending to travel to Israel and start a new life. Interpol intervened and arrested us handing us over to the British consulate in Genoa who then escorted us to a British Airways jet bound for London.

1970 – 1973

Returning from Liberia I qualified as a civil engineer and for lack of a better word became a hippy; from road tripping through both North and South America to back packing across India.

Picture taken in 1981 whilst living on a Canal boat in France with my friend Jake (photographer) and our girlfriends, Melba (left) and Aida (right). Strangely enough all four of us first met on the same night, July 7th 1973 in San Francisco; little did we know some 10 years later they would be the mothers of our children! Working on the David Eder Farm On guard duty at Kibbutz Yiftach On the 3rd of June 1967, I left for Israel as a volunteer to help in the Six Day War.

Newspaper headline from June 3rd 1967. Here I returned from Israel I am pictured being seen off by my friend Jake with several souvenirs as I check in for a Pan Am flight to Tel Aviv. including this pictorial I will always remember how the first 30 rows account of the events on the plane were heaped with machine guns, in the 6 day war ammunition, grenades and other weapons.

As I embarked on each journey I could hear my father, “during your travels if you see people making interesting things buy some samples and bring them back!” The family home soon filled with onyx chess sets, ethnic silver jewellery, sweaters, jeans, dresses, and a multitude of other ethnic treasures. Out of all of these, it seemed that only sterling silver jewellery from Mexico had commercial potential.

Samples quickly took over my family home; Mariachi sombreros, abalone shell lion, wooden flute from Peru

HISTORY

1974 – 1983

In 1974 my father and I established an importing company for Mexican sterling silver called International Jewellery and Crafts which was run from the family home in North West London.

My parents in the garden of our family home located in Aylestone Avenue North West Lonodn Mexican ethnic silver was fashionable and saleable and soon we found that we could fill the car full of stock, and drive to Kings Road and by the time we reached the other end we would be sold out. The shopkeepers would rush out in the middle of the road flagging us down, demanding to buy!

Our first collection of ethnic Mexican silver

In 1976 we moved our manufacturing base to London and the business became Ari D. Norman. Initially we gave designs to be made in several English factories in Birmingham, Sheffield and London and then with time we centralised design and production to our own workshops, developing our own look based on Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles; eras which I had fallen in love with during my youth and travels.

At the beginning of 1989 we moved out of 17 Aylestone Avenue NW6 my parents house, from which we had worked out of for 15 years, and into a two storey headquarter building which we named Argenta House. Subsequently the local council agreed to us renaming the street on which our office was located from Station Approach to Argenta Way.

HISTORY

1992 – 1999

In recognition of services rendered to the British silver industry I received The Freedom to the City of London. Although it is a great honour to be granted the Freedom to the City of London it is slightly amusing to note some of the ancient privileges bestowed upon a Freeman since 1237, as listed below:

“the right to drive sheep and cattle over London Bridge; to a silken rope, if hanged; to carry a naked sword in public; or that if the City of London Police finds a freeman drunk and incapable, they will bundle him or her into a taxi and send them home rather than throw them into a cell. “ While sheep have indeed occasionally been herded over London Bridge on special occasions, as one can imagine, many "privileges" are now primarily symbolic. With Royal recognition and global endorsement, we consolidated our international and national market with prestigious design and manufacturing projects for internationally recognised brands such as Wedgwood Jewellery, Harrods, Lane Crawford, John Lewis, House of Frasier, Liberty’s, Parker Pen and Mitsukoshi.

French stage and early film actress, notably renowned

SARAH

ERNHARDT (1844-1923)

as "the most famous actress the world has ever known“. In the words of Mark Twain, “There are five kinds of actresses: bad actresses, fair actresses, good actresses, great actresses. And then there is Sarah Bernhardt”. When I first encountered the name of Sarah Bernhardt I quickly learned that her turbulent and exciting life had been a source of inspiration for and personified the Art Nouveau style that I found so fascinating. In learning more of her life I felt she was in a way a kindred cultural spirit. Not only was my name originally going to be Sarah and I was in love with the works she inspired but more

A Lalique brooch made for Sarah Bernhardt

importantly I identified with her pride in being Jewish.

Designed by Mucha for Bernhardt's role in Cleopatra and made by Fouquet in 1899

One quote struck me in particular :“If I have a foreign accent – which I much regret – it is cosmopolitan not Teutonic. I am a daughter of the great Jewish race and my somewhat uncultivated language is the outcome of our enforced wanderings.” Sarah Bernhardt was an iconic personality of the Art Nouveau era and featured in classic Art Nouveau art, the most famous being the lithograph posters created by Alphonse Mucha. Mucha produced the first Sarah Bernhardt poster in 1895 to be used as an advertisement for the play Gismonda in which Bernhardt was the lead. Bernhardt was so satisfied with the first poster that she signed a six year contract with Mucha. Through these posters Bernhardt became a living symbol of the Art Nouveau style becoming synonymous with the Belle Epoque. Bernhardt also inspired the most famous of the Art Nouveau jewellers, Renee Lalique. Her flamboyant and adventurous personality acted as a catalyst and muse for Lalique's fertile imagination at a crucial point in his career from 1891-1895. Lalique made Bernhardt's stage jewels for her roles as Iseyl, Gismonda and Theodora. The jewels like Sarah herself were larger than life

During the Industrial Revolution of the late 18th and the 19th Century, Britain became the first country in the world to shift its economy from agriculture to manufacturing. This gave British silversmiths, whose work was already held in very high regard around the world, the opportunity to increase their output and widen their market. The British hallmark became an international symbol of trusted fineness and impeccable quality. At an early stage in the development of Ari D. Norman I realised that my creativity would be stifled if I owned the means of production since, not only would I be tied to maintaining a full workload for the machines and tools which we owned in order to recover the investment made in them, but I would also, as a result, only be able to offer products of one category. I decided therefore to contact and form partnerships with leading UK silversmiths to form partnerships in which I would supply designs and raw materials and they in turn would use their machinery, tools and craftsmanship to produce my unique pieces. These partnerships allowed me to offer a collection of pieces produced by a combination of casting, stamping, spinning and decorated with enamelling, stone setting or simply polished to perfection. Hence the Ari D. Norman collection could be design led without being constrained by the limits of any one production method.

20

My pieces would use thicker silver, and would combine the skills of hand work, casting and stamping in single pieces such as pillboxes mounted with cast three dimensional moveable animals. I would not be compromised into adopting cost cutting manufacturing techniques. Today the Ari D. Norman collection offers quality, value and unique pieces produced by combining a variety of production processes which are often adorned with additional high quality materials such as vitreous enamels or Austrian crystals. The combination of design led products created with uncompromising quality, results in sought after collectable pieces destined to last the test of time and become proud heirlooms for future generations.

Ari D. Norman is a strong advocate of the British hallmarking tradition. In fact we are the London Assay Office's largest client for silver articles. As I travel the world and explain the system and what it means to our potential international clients, my words are met with respect and awe since so many of our British traditions are revered and coveted globally.

The facts: All silver articles produced by Ari D. Norman bear the full British Hallmark with the exception of some items which are either too small or too delicate and these are simply marked 925.

A British Hallmark consists of a combination of the following marks being struck on each item submitted:

British Hallmarks have acted as a safeguard to purchasers of silver articles for over seven centuries.

THE SPONSOR’S MARK

The British Hallmarking system is the oldest form of consumer protection in existence. The Assay Offices of Great Britain are incorporated by Royal Charter and are independent of any trade association.

This indicates the manufacturer of the article. The unique sponsor’s mark of Ari D. Norman consists of a heraldic shield and the initials AN.

A British Hallmarked article guarantees that the article has been independently tested by an Assay Office and that it conforms to the legal standards of purity.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN MARK

The Lion Passant, indicates British silver.

Bradbury's Book of Hallmarks - 2012

THE DATE LETTER MARK This indicates the year in which the article was hallmarked. Each year is allocated a letter of the alphabet, when the letter “Z” is reached, the alphabet is started again commencing with the letter “A” but in a font that has never been used before.

QUEEN’S AWARD MARK

In 1989, we became the one and only silversmith to ever receive the right to have the Queens Award mark struck on all silver articles. “The Queen's Award for export is presented to a limited number of companies every year in recognition of outstanding sales to the export market. Ari D. Norman was the first ever British Silversmith to successfully apply for this award which was granted in 1989 and have the mark applied to silver items. This award is an endorsement from the British Government that a company has a good track record for exporting efficiently.”

THE STANDARD MARK

This denotes the precious metal content of the alloy from which the article is made. Sterling silver is an alloy containing 92.5 percent pure silver.

THE ASSAY OFFICE MARK

There are four assay offices in The United Kingdom, Birmingham wheres articles are tested and marked. These are located in London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh.

ARTS AND

RAFTS MOVEMENT (1860- 1930)

s a youth I studied the history of social change and was particularly fascinated by the French and Russian revolutions. However, until I became aware of the Arts and Crafts Movement I had never connected art with revolution. I researched the movement and found myself very symphatetic to its aims. Not only did it encourage beautiful creations, but it was truly political taking a revolutionary stance against the industrial era as well as advocating economic and social reform. The Movement represented an international design philosophy that originated in England and flourished between 1860 and 1910 (especially in the second half of that period), continuing its influence until the 1930's. Inspired by the writings of John Ruskin and instigated by the artist and writer William Morris, the movement spread to Europe and North America and inspired iconic British designers such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Arts and Crafts style started as a search for aesthetic design and decoration, its philosophy was one that promoted traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often medieval, romantic or folk style of decoration. In addition, in my view it was the British reflection of the European Art Nouveau style to which it developed in parallel.

John Ruskin (1819 – 1900) A philanthropic Victorian art critic, patron of the arts, artisan, water colourist and a prominent social thinker of his time. In all his writings he emphasized the connections between nature, art and society. He was hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th century up to the first World War, a period known as the Belle Epoque. Today, his ideas and concerns are widely recognised as having anticipated interest John Ruskin's Withering Leaf

in environmentalism,sustainability and craft.

William Morris (1834 – 1896) was an English textile designer, artist, writer and socialist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Key to the evolution of Art Nouveau in Britain creating a style of decoration that was in fact the prelude to Art Nouveau. Morris believed that the artist/craftsman should be true to his material and pursue an honesty of conception, following the path of nature a rationlised and not in servile imitation. He considered the machine as an evil barrier between the craftsman and his ability to create “honest” designs.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 – 1928) born in Scotland was a sculptor, architect, water colourist and designer. He was a leading light in the movement, inspiring an iconic style of jewellery and portraying Britain's first reaction to and interpretation of Art Nouveau and in a way foreshadowing Art Deco. His creations clearly demonstrate, and in a way give voice to the struggle that many faced between what was deemed “true craftsmanship” and the impending age of industry and machine made products.

OEM . . . WE WELCOME ENQUIRES FOR SMALL VOLUME BESPOKE PIECES My father was a very wise man who always said . . . “HE WHO DOES NOT HONOUR THE SMALL DOES NOT DESERVE THE LARGE.”

It has since become a guiding philosophy of our company, every order or enquiry is treated with the same respect and care be it for 1 or 10,000 pieces. Over the last five years, we have taken this phulosophy a step further. We find that there is a great demand for speciality and branded products, BUT, in small volumes. Unlike most manufacturers who demand a large intial order we do not. On the ensuing pages, you will view a small selection of the prestigious projects wich we have been involved with.

The resulting cufflinks are a cool and classic reflection of the character of this fine vodka. Understandably, attempting to acheive a lower unit cost after our initial sampling phase, Belvedere attempted to move production overseas but were unable to achieve the same quality or service and then returned to us for the full production.

At Ari D. Norman we have a saying that “WE ARE A BRAND BEHIND BRANDS”.

We are an internationally recognised brand in our own right and we also design and manufacture for other world class brands some examples of which are shown below. We were approached to produce clocks and frames for the internationally acclaimed retail department store Harrods. In 1996 Parker Pen approached Ari D. Norman to produce a new limited edition 1997 Parker Snake pen. The aim was to reflect the filigree style introduced in 1905 using modern materials and technology to produce 250 pieces in 18ct gold and 5,000 pieces in sterling silver. This partnership resulted in the creation of a magnificent writing instrument incorporating the skills of traditional British silversmiths and the latest technology of Parker Pen. Pen

ART

ECO

hen I think of Art Deco, the emotional image which is evoked is one of "satisfyingly simple with striking elegance" and this statement reflects my view of art and fashion of this era. Art Deco is an eclectic artistic design style that began in Paris in the 1920s and flourished internationally until World War II era. The style influenced all areas of design including architecture, interior design, fashion and jewellery.

Chrysler building in New York

Art Deco Fashion and Society gave rise to the liberated female of the roaring 20’s who became one of the leading icons of the age.

Charles Boyton silver Deco tea set

I first became aware of the striking Art Deco period as a teenager, I read John Steinbeck's “The Grapes of Wrath” and learned to play and sing stirring folk songs of the labour unrest on my Spanish guitar. This was the time when Jack Dempsey rode as a hobo on the railways and fought for his supper to eventually become the heavyweight champion of the world. Then I learned of prohibition, the Wall Street Crash, the FBI, flapper girls and such gangster folk heroes as Bonnie and Clyde, John Dillinger and Arnold Rothstein, whom I could not help but glamorize and identify with. I have to be honest, their philosophy of take what you want and share with others because society is not going to give it to you, appealed to the rebel and Robin Hood in me.

Elevator in Chrysler building

Two Girls wearing iconic Flapper dresses inspired by Coco Chanel and Paul Poiret

The term Art Deco was first used widely in 1966 in commemoration of the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris

Art Deco represented elegance, glamour, functionality and modernity. The linear symmetry of Art Deco was a distinct departure from the flowing asymmetrical organic curves of its predecessor style Art Nouveau. Although many design movements have political or philosophical beginnings or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. It has to be acknowledged that the horror of the First World War was a catalyst in creating the desire of people to forget the old and move on into a completely different style of life and art.

(1892-19 9 0)

omain de Tiroff was a Russian born French artist and designer known by the pseudonym Ert which is the French pronunciation of his initials R.T. He adopted the name to avoid embarrassing his Russian father, a high ranking naval officer who wanted Romain to continue in the maritime family tradition. He was a diversely talented 20th century artist and designer who flourished in an array of fields including fashion, jewellery, graphic arts, costume and set design for film, theatre, opera, and interior decor. Erté's Ocean de Lumiere

In the 70's I realised vintage fashion magazine covers were a mine of inspiration and I researched those of Harpers Bazaar and discovered Erte, thus began my first exposure to his brilliant mind. I became almost obsessed and wanted to know and discover all I could within the treasure chest which was Ert 's portfolio. There seemed to be no end to his creations and to my amazement I discovered that between 1915 and 1937 Erte designed over 200 covers of Harpers Bazaar and that his illustrations also appeared in publications such as, Illustrated London News, Cosmopolitan, Ladies' Home Journal and Vogue.

Erté designed statuettes

Result of initial inspiration 1980

Whilst researching Art Deco trends I stumbled across the cover of a 1926 Vogue magazine and was inspired by a drawing of a lady walking an Afghan hound, and I knew I simply had to translate this into jewellery!

Harper’s Bazaar (from right to left) November 1933, November 1920, March 1926 Erte was perhaps best known for his elegant and fashionable designs inspired by and indeed iconic of the Art Deco era he worked in. His delicate figures and sophisticated glamorous designs are instantly recognisable, and his ideas and art still influence fashion to this day. Still today when I pick up a book of Erte's works I experience the thrill and excitement that Erté’s Sunrise

Interior of the Mucha / Fouquet boutique

OU UET (1862- 19

)

n one of my frequent trips to Paris, I visited the Carnavalet Museum and was astonished when I saw the preserved Fouquet/Mucha boutique. These two great heroes of mine actually collaborated in design, manufacture and retail. Imagining the partnership simply blew me away!

Mucha design, Fouquet craftsmanship Circa 1900

Fouquet was a brilliant French master craftsman who achieved the impossible, creating stunning works of jewellery art both in the Art Nouveau and the Art Deco styles. His father, Alphonse Fouquet, started the Fouquet jewellery company in the 1800's and his son Georges headed the company together with his son, Jean, until its closure in the 1930's. In 1900 Georges Fouquet went into partnership with Alphonse Mucha, opening a boutique designed by Mucha in which jewellery was created by both master jewellers. Although, the boutique was demolished the exterior and interior were preserved and rebuilt in the Carnavalet Museum in Paris. The brilliance of Fouquet is that in 1922 he sensed creative changes. He managed to fully adapt to what was to become the new Art Deco style and indeed not only did he adapt but in many ways he lead this new era. He modifi ed what were his earlier innovative ideas of floral and figurative rationale to produce brooches, bracelets, belt Fouquet orignal design and craftsmanship 1901

buckles and pendants with extremely stylised abstract motifs. He replaced precious gemstones with new materials, such as onyx, jade and coral, combining these with the translucency of topaz, aquamarine, crystal and amethyst.

THIS

U DELIVERS

any years ago I was working on my exhibition stand taking an order from an American gentleman, who was the buyer for a very large and prestigious, New York shop on 5th Avenue. Suddenly, his assistant leaned close and began whispering in his ear, the buyer pushed him aside and said in a very loud voice, "I don't care if I can buy it ten cents cheaper at another supplier, this guy delivers!" This was a man of many years experience as an international buyer and at that moment I learned a very important lesson. I understood that just obtaining an order is not enough, you must also deliver it and you must deliver it on time. More recently, we were commissioned by a very well known brand and we diligently went through months of development work, going back and forth with prototypes to achieve the final model. Then just as we expected to receive confirmation of a large order they thanked us for our work and said they would have to move production to China. A month later we received a confirmed order for many thousands of pieces together with an e-mail conveying that they simply could not get the delivery time or quality they wanted in China and they hoped we could work a miracle – two months later

the order was delivered on time and they are now a regular corporate client! Letting your customer down should never be an option - working hard to obtain an order and then not to deliver on time is an unacceptable failure. This lesson was well learned and we soon developed a loyal client base that knew they could rely on us to deliver quickly, sometimes the next day. The result was that we became the first ever British silversmith to receive the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement in 1989. Queen's Award Certificate signed by both Queen Eli abeth and Margaret Thatcher

VICTOR

ORTA (1861

194 )

orta was a Belgian architect and designer and has been described as “undoubtedly the key European Art Nouveau architect”. After the second World War part of my close family returned to Belgium and settled in Antwerp and Brussels. At the age of seven, I spent a year in Belgium and attended a school just outside of Antwerp. So not only did I have ample opportunities to visit the visually confounding and aspirational Horta sites but indeed they were part of the backdrop of my life. With the construction of his Hotel Tassel in Brussels in 1893 Horta is credited as the first to introduce Art Nouveau’s decorative arts in architecture. By rejecting historical styles and embracing new materials, he laid the foundations for modern architecture as can clearly be seen from the distinctive interiors illustrated on this page. In 1932 King Albert I of Belgium conferred on Horta the title of Baron for his services to architecture. Four of the buildings he designed have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Se desoderi qualcosa, non e piu un sogno

OUR FAMIL MOTTO IS

意志只要堅定 夢想即可成真

F OU WILL IT IT IS NO DREAM

first came across Theodor Herzl (1860 - 1904) as a teenager when I read his book n (published 1902). The spirit of his writing is summed up by the quote "If you will it, it is no dream", I found the spirit of these words to be very encouraging and inspirational and I absorbed them into my psyche; repeating this phrase to myself whenever I was faced with a seemingly impossible challenge.

yiw ;apko ;pne spne pr ivØvas ho, qo yh spna nhIM rhega.

Nothing can give a better insight into our company, not only of our products but also of our spirit and philosophy than our family motto which is now incorporated in our Family Coat of Arms. One may be sure that Ari D Norman is a company that welcomes new challenges, never gives up on a project and will never let its clients down.

意思があれば夢は実現する。

The Latin equivalent is incorporated into our family Coat of Arms

Si on le veut, ce n'est plus un rêve

My late father Sidney, with his usual wisdom had a maxim which I call, "If it was easy", he would say “if it was easy, everyone would do it” whenever we encountered setbacks and challenges.

Wenn ihr wollt, ist es kein Märchen "‫"مالحألا ققحتت ــ ةدارإلا ةوقب‬

Both my parents had humble beginnings in their youth; my mother worked in a newsagents dreaming of being able to meet the Queen and my father worked on bended knees sweeping up tiny scrapings of rough diamonds in his father's workshop dreaming of owning his own diamond mine. Their dreams and my dreams became interwoven and with our joint efforts they were realised. My father and I discovered a rich deposit of diamonds in the Jungles of Liberia and my mother and I were invited to Buckingham Palace to have tea with the Queen, to celebrate the granting of The Queen’s Award for Export. In 1992 I was granted The Freedom To The City Of London and in 2000 I recieved the right to an official Family Coat of Arms. I must be honest the fi rst thought that comes to mind after recounting this list of dreams fullfilled is that it is not a bad list at all for a first generation family of Jewish refugees, even if I do say so myself! Now my thoughts turn to the dreams of my two sons and to the recognition of their future achievements... I feel confident that many more proud moments lie ahead. In summary, the conclusion to draw is that discipline and determination can carry one very far indeed.

SO MUCH MORE THAN

UST A LO O

ur family crest symbolises my family's history and character and also the spirit and philosophy of Ari D. Norman. Indeed we have adopted the family crest as the company logo and are very proud that it is so much more than just a logo.

ut ree In the early 19th century in order to facilitate taxation the Polish government allocated family names to its Jewish population, which until that time simply operated a system based on the name of the father. For example, Lee ben Ari which literally means Lee the son of Ari. My family was allocated the name Nussbaum (nut tree). cales On the tree is shown a weighing scale, both signifying the importance of justice to the family and the four generation family link to the diamond industry in which your word is your bond and binding deals are concluded with a mere hand shake and the word mazal or simply with the word mazal over the telephone.

Motto The family motto non o n u when translated from the Latin states: ou no

Having won the right to a family coat of arms I spent two years meticulously designing a family crest that would stand the test of time. The objective was to relate family history through symbolism to my descendants, and inspire them with fortitude and the courage to succeed and survive in the face of adversity; never forgetting to behave in a humble, digniďŹ ed and just m a n n e r.

i o an iamon The hippopotamus with his foot on a diamond, represents my father’s adventurous quest for diamonds. He lived in West Africa for many years and kept a pygmy hippopotamus as his favourite pet. eral ic hiel The heraldic shield is part of our official registered name mark used by the British Hallmarking Offices and forms part of the hallmark struck on our products.

82

eral ic ion These create a link with British sterling silver which has always been stamped with a lion for the past 700 years as part of the British hallmark.

ar e Wire On the inside border of the shield there is barbed wire symbolising the holocaust and in particular Auschwitz where my grandfather perished, at the same time it deďŹ es the holocaust denial movement. In addition the barbed wire serves as a warning not to threaten the independence of thought, actions or safety of the Norman family.

uirrel Within the shield the squirrels holding a menorah symbolise my mother who was devoted to keeping a true family home. She also used to put very important things away somewhere safe and then often forget where they were, hence she was given the nickname squirrel.

ion ea The modern lion head symbolises me since the name Ari in Hebrew means lion.

RUD ARD

(186

1936)

‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling If you can keep your head when all about you

n English poet, short story writer and novelist.

I was first made aware of the works of Rudyard Kipling in

Remembered mostly as an English Imperialist and for

1960 at the age of 13 when my sister, Jackie, made a speech

his writings about British soldiers in India and stories for

at my Bar Mitzvah and quoted from the poem

responsible and ethical living. This poem contains mottos and maxims for life and the poem is also a blueprint for personal integrity, behaviour and self development. Sometime after the excitement of my Bar Mitzvah had died down, I went to the library and studied the poem, which helped me learn not to panic when under pressure, and also provided me with a code of personal conduct to which I could aspire. The poem is reproduced here in full – take a moment, read, be inspired and enjoy!

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too:

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same:

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss:

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

Depicted above is the Code of Conduct book presented to me, when granted the Freedom of the City of London in 1989. It is notable that both in 1960 and 1989 the message I received regarding personal behaviour and integrity was the same.

If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, My four sisters celebrating my Bar Mitzvah

88

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

REN

great deal of my working life has been spent at trade exhibitions where my creative interest was stimulated by the array of books on offer at such places as the Basel Watch

Jewellery show. One day

by chance I picked up a book of Lalique jewellery designs and it was love at first sight. I distinctly remember that as I explored the world of

Lalique’s Serpent Hand Bag Circa 1902

Lalique more, that when I discovered he actually studied in South London and was influenced by his time at Sydenham College during the Arts and Crafts Movement, that for some reason not only did my confidence as a designer grow but so did my view of Pendant necklace made by Lalique depicting Sarah Bernhardt in the play La Princesse Lointaine

the heriatge and future of British design and inspiration.

Lalique's Peacocks on prunus pendant Circa 1902

Lalique was the genius of Art Nouveau jewellery and the greatest artist jeweller ever. He overturned the traditions of 19th Century French jewellery design and manufacture. Lalique created a new vocabulary of materials moving away from the traditional diamond, to the opal with its mysterious flashes of colour, horn, glass and enamel. For Lalique the principle sources of inspiration were

Lalique’s Pine Cones Pocket Watch Circa 1899

mother nature with its insects, plants and seasonal cycles and Japanese works of art especially, Ukiyo-e prints and paintings which made their way to Europe in the 1860’s after Japan reopened trade with the West, following several centuries of isolation. Lalique’s designs managed to capture the nostalgia for the dying century

and mixed it with the fear and hope for the new age that prevailed in the Fin De Siecle atmosphere. The most Lalique’s Bronze Winged Female F igure Circa 1899

important and haunting feature of Lalique’s Art Nouveau jewellery, is the bewitching theme of turbulent change, constant movement and transformation.

AL HONSE

UCHA (1860

1939)

hilst on a holiday weekend in Praque in the late 70’s I purchased a collection of antique Jewish clocks, the likes of which I had never seen. The clock face had Hebrew letters instead of Arabic numerals, and the hands moved anti-clockwise! One of the clocks had a motif of a lady's head fi xed to it. After enquiring with the seller about the motif, I was told that she was Mucha style and that just a few minutes walk from where I stood

was a museum dedicated to the works of Mucha. My subsequent visit to this museum opened up the world of Art Nouveau to me. Mucha was a Czech Art Nouveau and decorative artist known best for his distinctive style which frequently featured beautiful young women in flowing, vaguely neoclassical looking robes, often surrounded by large flowers which sometimes formed halos behind their heads. In contrast with contemporary poster makers he used pale pastel colours.

message, and nothing more; I have always felt sympathy for his deep frustration at what is the irony of life since he gained fame from his commercial art, when he most wanted to concentrate on more artistic projects. Mucha’s work has continued to experience periodic revival of interest for illustrators and artists and even the acclaimed Japanese Manga artists have mimicked Mucha’s style which is an interesting cultural reversal since Mucha himself was originally influenced by the The Times Of The Day, by Mucha 1899

ART

OUVEAU (1880

1914)

ttracted by the free flowing curves and romance of Mucha, I decided to create a few silver pieces of jewellery in his style. The reaction was extremely positive and I immediately widened the collection and integrated the styles of other designers from this period – clearly the Art Nouveau style could be appreciated in modern times and I was determined to play my part in the rebirth of this style around the world.

Nouveau Iron Work, Grand Palais Paris

The name Art Nouveau is French for new art and was derived from the Maison de l’ Art Nouveau which was the name of the gallery opened in Paris in 1895 by the German art dealer, Samuel Bing, which exclusively featured modern art. This style is also known as Jugendstil which is the

Louis Aucoc brooch Circa 1900

German for 'youth style' so named after the magazine Jugend which promoted the Art Nouveau look. Meanwhile in Britain, Art Nouveau had a close affiliation or kinship to the Arts and Crafts movement, which had begun some time before the Parisienne inspired Art Nouveau movement.

Maison De L’Art Nouveau

In Italy it is called Stile Liberty named after the famous

Gaston Lafitte brooch, 1904

department store, Liberty and Co, of Regent Street which opened shortly after the 1862 International Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum where the British public were first exposed to Japanese works of art. Under the management of Arthur Liberty this store became the leading outlet and promotional centre for English Art Nouveau whose clients included J. Whistler and Oscar Wilde.

Louis Aucoc brooch Circa 1900

Art Nouveau was inspired by natural forms and structures, not only by flowers and plants but also by curved lines. Art Nouveau theorists challenged the belief that art could only manifest itself through painting, drawing or sculpture and advocated that the design of everyday objects, for example, a teapot, a chair or light fitting could also exude

artistic appreciation.

view the Belle Epoque era as representing the culmination of the creative energy of the Art Nouveau movement. It was truly a golden era of flamboyant freedom, with women finally taking more and more

control of their lives and very little was taboo, even sex. This period of rebellion is one I strongly identifi ed with; the break away from convention, coupled with the socially unacceptable challenging of the status quo. This has always been my nature, put me in a room with three people and I will always find the contrarian view - in life you have to push and always be thinking and moving forward. There is nothing more dangerous than inertia! Belle Époque is the French for beautiful era and it refers to a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. The Belle Epoque was characterised by optimism and new technology and medical discoveries. The name Belle Epoque was applied in retrospect as people began to realise that it had been a golden age when compared to the horrors

of World War I. This was a peaceful period and for many Europeans transnational, class based affiliations were as important as national identities. A middle or upper class gentleman could travel to much of Europe without a passport and even reside abroad with minimal bureaucratic regulations. At the same time,

the international workers movement reorganised and reinforced pan European class based identities among the classes whose labour was exploited by the Belle Epoque. Great scientific and technological advancement occurred in Europe and in the world in general during this period. The first mass produced automobile arrived bolstering the middle class. Travelling in style became a more achievable pastime both on land and on sea with the emergence of the Orient Express (VSOE) and cruise liners such as the Lusitania and the Titanic. Rapid communication was achieved, first with the telegraph and then with the telephone. Electric lights began to supercede gas

lighting. Record players provided music and entertainment could be enjoyed by visiting cinemas. Theatres hosted plays that shocked the audiences with realism and cabaret theatre also became popular. Exotic feathers and furs were prominently featured in fashion, as haute couture was invented in Paris and fashion began to move in biannual cycles. Importantly, art was no longer confined to paintings and sculptures. In this epoch, jewellery became a focus of artistic expression and it became fashionable for even the most mundane objects such as door handles, light fittings and teapots to be created with exotic beauty of their own.

I still remember my dad recounting one of his favourite passages

MAR

CO OLO

which I summarise below:

(12 4-1324)

arco Polo was born into a wealthy Venetian family of jewel merchants. Together with his father and uncle Marco travelled to China where they lived from 1275-1292 acting as advisors to the Mongol ruler Kublai Khan. When the trio eventually returned to Venice Marco Polo was captured by the Genoese with whom the Venetians were at war and they were imprisoned for one year. Whilst in captivity he wrote an account of his adventures called, "The Million" which is also known as the Travels of Marco Polo which became exceptionally popular. It is thought that the Genoese Christopher Columbus may have discovered America in 1492 as a direct result of having read The Million. At school my father read The Million and was most fascinated and inspired by this adventurous trader, so much so, that when I first began to travel to exotic destinations, he nickednamed me Marco Polo. It would seem that my father had an unerring intuition, and sensed within me a true affinity with the spirit of Marco Polo.

They had been away so long and were so changed in appearance when the three adventurers finally returned to Venice, dressed in Tartar costume and interspersing their Italian with Chinese, no one recogni ed them or accepted them as members of the Polo family. To convince their family who they were, the three held a big dinner to which all their family were invited. The trio served the first course wearing bright red Tartar costumes and ended by serving desert wearing traditional Venetian garb. As a grand finale to this theatrical dinner, Marco Polo brought into the dining room the rough Tartar coats that the three had worn on their return and ripped open the linings and many packets filled with rubies, emeralds and diamonds fell to the ground. Not only was this the finest collection of jewels ever seen in Venice but it also served to finally persuade their guests, that their hosts were indeed who they claimed to be.

Like Marco Polo I too thirsted to travel the world to see and experience other cultures whilst at the same time seeking exotic treasures.

134

Leaving home for foreign ports...again

In the summer of 1963 at age 16, I set out with my close friend Yehuda, without parental permission to hitch hike to Israel, with the intention of going to live on a Kibbutz in the Negev desert. Fate however, had determined that - like Marco Polo some 450 years earlier - we would be arrested by Interpol in Genoa and put on a flight home to our anxious parents.

ILVER WITH EMOTION In addition to making classical and traditional pieces of silver, we enjoy designing products that evoke emotion.

he Ari D. Norman philosophy is that all challenges can be faced successfully with the magic of smiles and laughter and we create items which do just that. One such piece is a pillbox which has become known to many of our clients as the Mamma and Papa pillbox which features a squirrel symbolising my mother and a hippo symbolising my father sitting on a seesaw - there is even a story attached to this creation...

“The Hippo and Squirrel happily sit on opposite ends of a seesaw and near them is a large freshly baked cake. The hungry Hippo eyes the delicious cake, wondering how he can be allowed to have a piece. He looks across at his wife the Squirrel, sitting happily at the other end of the seesaw and an expression of cunning briefly crosses his face. "Here darling, have a piece, you know you like it". The smiling Squirrel eagerly takes a slice of

cake offered by her husband, which she eats very quickly. Suddenly she finds her end of the seesaw has come down with a bump! Naturally being a polite and sensitive animal the Squirrel immediately offers her husband the Hippo a large slice of cake in return, which he accepts with a smile on his face. He eats the cake joyously and then his end of the seesaw hits the ground with a bump! The happy Hippo immediately starts to think of how to get some more cake. Have another piece darling, it really is good!". The Squirrel is once again tempted and finds herself hitting the ground with a bump! Needless to say, pieces of cake are exchanged throughout the night with accompanying bumps! When the sun rises, the seesaw is at rest, only the crumbs remain and the happy Hippo and the smiling Squirrel are contentedly asleep in each other's arms’.”

I O-E kiyo-e is a Japanese term which literally translates as “pictures of the floating world”. This term refers to a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings produced between the 17th and 20th centuries. The contemporary novelist Asai Ryoi defines the concept of the floating world in his book “Tales of the Floating World” thus: “

Living only for the moment, turning our full

attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking

wine, diverting ourselves in just floating, floating;

refusing

to be disheartened like a gourd floating along with the river current: this is what we called the floating world ” Japan was isolated from the West from 1624 to the 1860’s after which a sustained period of trading began and Japanese art for the first time in centuries became available to the outside world. Having made numerous trips to Japan visiting Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe and Hiroshima, I have always been profoundly struck by the courtesy and correctness of behaviour of the Japanese, their stoicism in the face of adversity and their

haunting peacefulness, which we in the West can rarely achieve, appreciate or understand. I became fascinated with Japanese art and in particular Ukiyo-e prints and paintings

which indeed do seem to take one to another tranquil world. Therefore, when I started researching in more depth the catalysts at work on western jewellery design in the 19th century, I was not surprised to learn that indeed Ukiyo-e was a strong direct influence on the great designers of the Art Nouveau movement.

ICTORIAN ERA (183 Victorian lorgnette late 1800’s

Lorgnette by Ari D Norman 1979

1901)

was first introduced to the Victorian era through my childhood stamp collecting and one of the "must have" stamps, of the time was the Penny Black postage stamp which in fact was the first adhesive stamp. In searching for his illusive prize I would freuquent markets with my mother and during my search I kept coming across these curious Victorian trinkets made of silver. Many of them I could not imagine their purpose so I kept asking and learning. The more I learnt the more involved I became with the wonderful world of audacious functionality that is Victoriana with a special interest in the care in detail to so many of these era's pieces. In truth I developed a fascination with pillboxes, perfume bottles and lorgnettes and it still surprises my sons when they see how excited I get when I handle such pieces!

The Victorian decorative art period reflects the eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles combining the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the Middle East and Asia in furniture, fittings, interior, personal accessories and jewellery. The Victorian era marked the period of expansionist imperialism during which Britain established an enormous empire spanning the four corners of the earth from which a wealth of cultural influences permeated British society. Victorian design indulged in excess of ornamentation from which the romantic Art Nouveau style emerged. As Britain moved into the early Victorian period fine silver jewellery became popular. At the time most pieces of jewellery were handmade and silver was the ideal precious metal for setting stones because of its malleability and bright white colour. During this period many gemstones including round rose cut diamonds were set in silver together with popular coloured gemstones including deeper shades of amethyst, golden topaz, garnet and shell cameos.

By the middle of the Victorian era the industrial revolution was developing rapidly and the fine handcrafted designs of silver jewellery changed to include manufactured pieces and by 1852 a method for cutting and stamping out silver settings was developed allowing jewellery to be made rapidly and inexpensively.

Mourning charm worn by Queen Victoria 1862

206

When King Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria went into mourning for her beloved husband and wore only black until her death in 1901. As a figurehead for the nation, Queen Victoria greatly influenced fashion and a new style of jewellery emerged using blackened oxidised silver set with dark stones such as black onyx amethyst, this style became known as silver mourning jewellery. As a direct result of mourning jewellery, designs with an air of sentimentality became popular and wearing silver lockets and engraved or monogramed jewellery commemorating those lost but not forgotten became common in the jewellery world. By the late Victorian period this trend evolved into silver charm bracelets which became popular, bringing with them a more playful side to jewellery with styles, flowers, hearts and anchor shapes becoming particularly in demand.

During this era silver photo frames became very popular and were seen as part of the interior design revolution Victorian cufflinks for decorating the dining rooms and lounges in the houses of the middle and upper class families. Small personal circa 1880 accessories made of silver also became extremely popular as class status symbols including pillboxes, perfume bottle, pincushions, cufflinks, bookmarks and much more.

Upon her death in 1986, there were various articles written celebrating both her life and her collection of fine e ellery. ince the

Instead of diamonds, gold and platinum I wanted to design a collection using silver and semi-precious stones so that it as not ust limited to the most affluent members of society. I embarked on my research and I discovered ust ho incredible her collection truly as Brooch made from silver set with amethyst, marcasite, quartz crystal, mother of pearl with emerald set eye. There was a young sapling growing in the shade of a mighty oak. The oak didn’ t let the sapling have any sunlight and also deprived it of water. The sapling beseeched the oak, let me have some sunshine and drink some water, to which the oak replied in a deep gruff voice, I came to this field first, I am bigger than you and the answer is no. With the passage of time sterling silver articles which are worn or handled fre uently develop a warm look with a friendly feel. This is called the patina which is produced by oxidation of the metal. The beauty of sterling silver is that it can be considered as a living material which matures with age as the tactile patina develops. The patina is created by the natural property of silver to tarnish and get darker as a coating of oxidation covers the meta surface when exposed to light and moisture. Tarnishing can be prevented by cleaning the article regularly with a silver polishing cloth made of soft material impregnated with chemicals. If a silver product has been left for a long time and deep tarnishing has occurred then this can be removed by using either silver dip li uid or silver polish wadding.

he more I researched the Belle Epoque era of Art Nouveau the more intriguing it became. I discovered that many of the key designers of the era, collaborated with one another and very often Sarah Bernhardt’s name cropped up linking them all together. Beardsley was one of the most controversial authors and illustrators that England had to offer at that time. His drawings in black, influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts known as Ukiyo-e, depicted the erotic, decadent and grotesque, which became the main attributes of his later work. A leading figure in the Aesthestic Movement, which included such luminaries as Oscar Wilde and James McNeill Whistler. Beardsley collaborated with and provided drawings for Oscar Wilde’s play Salome, which premiered in Paris in 1896, starring the famed Sarah Bernhardt. Beardsley was a significant contributor to the devleopment of the Art Nouveau style and the Poster Movement prior to his early demise at the age of 26 from tuberculosis.

Engraving by hand is an ancient art and until the twentieth century was the only form of personalising or producing a design on a metal surface. Hand engraving is time consuming and can only be carried out by skilled craftsmen. Machine n ra in The introduction of a manual engraving machine called a pantograph allowed anyone to be quickly trained and be able to engrave without years of training required to become a skilled hand engraver. With the advent of the computer more sophisticated machines became available culminating in Computer Numeric Control (CNC) engraving which uses graphic software to transform designs into engraving indentations.

An exquisite miniature produced in sterling silver and mounted with a Swarovski crystal pig figurine for the Russian Post Office celebrating the year of the pig. Exemplifying Machine engraving.

Computer technology updates the ancient art of engraving. Signatures, logos and serial numbers can be laser engraved by transferring scanned images and employing computer graphics. There are no limitations to the style of lettering available and the most intricate of designs or logos can be replicated. ng c

Norman; it is therefore what my grandmother would have called in Yiddish "Neshomo Hazman" which can best be translated as Zeitgeist! Whilst I do not aspire to the greatness of Marco Polo - his was a name that my father prophetically bestowed upon me as an endearment. Marco Polo blazed a trail for others and opened up all manner of trade and travel through his adventures to “far off lands” so too with my vast travelling and over 800 international exhibitions did I change the landscape of silver gifts and jewellery with my love and emulation of the bygone eras of Victoriana, Art Nouveau and Art Deco in the 1980’s and 1990’s. In the 1980’s I launched a collection of pillboxes, bookmarks, sewing items and other

That same year I travelled to Thailand for a family holiday before the Hong Kong exhibition. Being ever inquisitive, I visited the Bangkok jewellery fair for the second time and I truly felt sick to my heart as I walked the aisles, the exhibition was full of Thai manufacturers who were now making the same pieces which the Italian manufacturers had copied from us and a few other designs in the same style, in particular pillboxes. Thailand had never made pillboxes until I created a market for them! Similarly the following year, when I participated at an exhibition in Portugal I had great success with Victorian perfume bottles and thimbles since Portugal had never seen anything like this before; the following year half of the manufacturers in Portugal began making Perfume bottles and thimbles including other items in the Victorian and Art Nouveau style. This was just the small personal accessories and gifts part of our collection. When I think back to how Wedgwood came to me in 1991 and asked me to design

I would be a liar if I said that this copying did not somewhat upset and disillusion me, but as I matured I realised that in its own way “imitation” is truly “the sincerest form of flattery” – the main thing is to be one step ahead of the game and be the copied not the copier! Looking back over the text of this catalogue I am amazed to see how the elements of the A.D.N alphabet and events in my adventurous and full life intertwine to create the rich tapestry that is the Ari D. Norman brand today. Now that much has been committed to paper, a pattern emerges and I feel that by sharing part of my life with the reader, I myself have better understood the development of the company and brand, moreover giving me true meaning to my life so far. My path in life has been winding and exciting; from wild rebel to school dropout; from being an idealistic Kibbutznik to a car mechanic; a University student protesting the Vietnam war to decorator and mini cab driver; a pyjama clad hippy in India to cool dude with his foot on the accelerator pedal racing my friends across San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge; to reluctant businessman climbing the hills of Taxco to being received in Buckingham Palace and recognized by the British establishment. My family gathered round me and together we had the energy of the sun and went to bed only when the birds started to sing as dawn broke. We worked not out of love of money but rather in search of fulfilment and recognition. My adventurous spirit drove me to search out fresh challenges, cultures and excitement and in the business world this is called “developing an export market”! Some 30 years later 80 of our clients are based overseas covering the four continents of the world; behind each and every client there is a journey and behind each journey there is always a great story to be told!

Engraved acrylic desk pen holder presented to me by my father to mark the occasion of winning the Queen's Award for Export, 1989

I am reminded of a speech I recently gave.......

“For a small company to export, it is very daunting, with a minefield of additional challenges including foreign languages, diverse cultural business and social expectations, payment risks, custom regulations and shipping methods. For the small business, exporting for the first time, is like entering a totally alien world. I well recall , our now legendary firs attempt at export, which was to far flung Southern Ireland ~ how do we get the parcel to our client? Accompanied by my later father, we took the parcel to the Main Post Office in Central London. There, we were faced with a barrage of uestions and different options of how to ship the parcel. We were asked, do you want to use the tie on system, or do you want to use the green label system? We studied the Post Office manuals which were handed to us. It seemed that each clerk advised us differently. F inally, after 2 hours my father and I emerged from the Post Office, totally mystified and still clutching the parcel ” Extract from 2008 speech by Ari D. Norman to ALL PARTY PARLIMENTARY EXORT GROUP

The only drawback to all this adventurous energy was that we neglected the potential Ari D. Norman audience right here in England! However, in life they say “it’s never too late” and we shall now be turning much more attention to home whilst still having a few international adventures here and there.

E

The defining spirit of the Reich/Nussbaum (Norman) dynasty has always been to strive to be ethically successful and charitable. The essence of family solidarity is exemplified by the contract drawn up by our forefathers in 1932 in which all family members pledged to help anyone in the family, no matter how far removed, as and when needed.

Leibisch Reich

My grandfather, father and myself have over the course of the last hundred years laid the foundations for what can be best described as a true brand complete with a proud family coat of arms which symbolises and represents "far more than just a logo". What of the future Time will tell; the fourth generation comprising of my two wonderful sons Lee and Adam form an unbeatable team and will without doubt take Ari D. Norman in many new and exciting directions. At this time, as their father, I tempt to crystallise words of wisdom based on my experience for my sons. In my own Kiplingesque way, I council them first and foremost to remember, that business should be dignified and yet fun at the same time. Often you may feel that you want an easy life but grit your teeth and be determined and remember if it was easy everyone would do it.Be happy, healthy and enjoy business and life, always remain humble and if you can help and respect other people as well as make a little money to share with others less fortunate along the way, then yours are good lives my sons!

O

Dear Family Member(s) The passing away on 2/5 1932 of our father and grandfather Reb (Mr) Leibisch Reich, may his name be for a blessing, has torn from us a part of our entire (and ‘may no evil eye cast upon it’) numerous family which is, unfortunately, dispersed and spread to all parts of the world, and there looms a threat that in a short time none of us will know which of us is his relative and where such a person is, above all in today’s difficult circumstances, when each of us must, above all, consider the severe crisis which we are experiencing and the great effort which is required to sustain our own families. It was always the wish of our father and grandfather, may his name be for a blessing, that the fruit of his loins shall remain together, supporting one another, whether in joy or, God forbid, in sorrow. And, in following the will of our father and grandfather, may his name be for a blessing, and in realising it, with mature consideration, his children have resolved TO ESTABLISH AN ASSOCIATION WITH ITS SEAT IN ROZWADÓW, which was the birthplace of our parents, and with the name of “THE FAMILY OF LEIBISCH REICH”, to whom should belong as members only those persons who are descended from the family of Leibisch and Dvoreh Reich as well as their respective husbands or wives. The Association shall have the aim: 1. Of providing reliable information about all our relatives throughout the world. 2. That every single [family] member be obliged to inform the Association’s Committee of details of events within his close family (joyful or, God forbid, sad), so that the Committee will from time to time be able to inform the members of all events and details of the family. 3. That in case of need, the Association shall help poor relatives from its own funds – should they discover this to be the case – with the appropriate monetary resources, and thereby obviating the shame that would follow, should our needy relatives, God forbid, turn to outsiders for help. The funds of the Association shall consist of: 1) a one-off payment, dependent on the level of wealth, but no less than 2 zlotys from each member. 2) Monthly contributions, also according to the level of wealth, but no less than 50 groszny [groschen] from each member. 3) Voluntary donations, to which any member might wish to commit himself, written bequests and any other donation given freely. By virtue of the honour that we have to consider you as (a) relative(s), we invite you to join this established association and we are completely certain that you will recognise the significance, usefulness and purpose of the association, and that you will not exclude yourselves from the activity which we have undertaken and that you will declare your entry into it.
