HENZEL STUDIO is proud to partner with PADDLE8 for an upcoming auction of the Studio’s handcrafted, artist-designed carpets. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit the lifesaving work of the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF). Since its founding over 25 years ago, EJAF has grown into one of the most highly respected international nonprofit HIV/AIDS organizations, raising more than $432 million for over 3,400 worthy programs across the globe. EJAF’s grant initiatives are designed around the core belief that every person deserves dignity, respect, and unfettered access to accurate information, prevention methods, treatment, medical care, support services, and advocacy no matter who they are, where they live, what they believe, what they do, or who they love. For more than a quarter century, EJAF grants have enabled countless community-based organizations around the world to improve and protect the health and lives of millions of people every day. Over the years, EJAF has worked closely with contemporary artists across disciplines to help support their mission. It is in this spirit, and to further bring to light EJAF’s tireless work, that HENZEL STUDIO is thrilled to be able to support the organization by donating a portion of the proceeds from this PADDLE8 auction of the Studio’s groundbreaking and unprecedented collections of handmade artist-designed carpets.

Since the launch of HENZEL STUDIO COLLABORATIONS at BARNEYS NEW YORK Madison Avenue in 2014 during Frieze Art Fair, the brand has developed art rugs by fifteen contemporary artists including RICHARD PRINCE, HELMUT LANG, JACK PIERSON, NAN GOLDIN, SCOTT CAMPBELL, RICHARD PHILLIPS, MARILYN MINTER, MICKALENE THOMAS, AND ANSELM REYLE. Via HENZEL STUDIO HERITAGE, extensive collections have also been developed in collaboration with artist estates, that to date include ANDY WARHOL FOUNDATION FOR THE VISUAL ARTS and TOM OF FINLAND FOUNDATION. The auction will mark the unveiling of new carpets designed by ASSUME VIVID ASTRO FOCUS, JONATHAN HOROWITZ, JWAN YOSEF, OLAF BREUNING, BJARNE MELGAARD and LAWRENCE WEINER. Free to disregard design movements and related principles and rules, the featured artists were invited to freely and seamlessly translate their work and artistic ethos into the media at hand, exploring shape, volume, and finishing, where practicality was secondary to concept. This creative brief allows all artists to embrace the outcome as part of their body of work.
“Art rugs have been around for quite some time in various forms, and some of the most prominent artists including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Mike Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Leger, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso have all turned to the media at some point in their oeuvre. However, rather than look back, we’re looking to encapsulate facets of contemporary art and work with a curated group of artists that simultaneously express their ethos within a broad yet defined scope. Having more than fifteen leading contemporary artists collaborate in this capacity makes Henzel Studio Collaborations an unprecedented program, even though the artisan practices remind us that the possibility has always been there.” Joakim Andreasson, curator for Henzel Studio Each rug, regardless of artist, is priced per square foot and will be offered at a predetermined size.
HENZEL STUDIO COLLABORATIONS has in the past had solo exhibitions at venues that include COLETTE GALLERY (Paris), AUSTERE (Los Angeles), and JOYCE (Hong Kong). HENZEL STUDIO COLLABORATIONS art carpets designed by MARILYN MINTER and LAWRENCE WEINER are currently on view at the exhibition NOMADIC MURALS: CONTEMPORARY TAPESTRIES AND CARPETS at Boca Raton Museum of Art through October 21, 2017. Upcoming exhibition will take place at THE NEW in Los Angeles, February 2018.
