In August 2002, the Faculty of Humanities at Copenhagen University was ex­tended by 40,000 m2. The expansion means that the faculty can now accommodate an additional 5,000 students. The University of Copenhagen has started rebuilding KUA, the old premises at Amager – the faculties of theology, computer science and law will be concentrated at one large campus at Amager. These faculties will move into Søndre Campus in 2014. Arkitema designed the project.

DR Byen – multimedia complex and concert hall

The construction consists of four buildings each with its own architecture. The buildings are connected by “Indre Gade”, an inner bridge crossing the University Canal from the building’s second floors. The concert hall, designed by Jean Nouvel, opened in January 2009.

Approximately 150 shops, restaurants, golf centre, leisure facilities etc. make Field’s the largest shopping centre in Scandinavia. Current tenants include Magasin, El-Giganten, Stadium, Bilka One Stop, Hennes & Mauritz and Zara, soon to be followed by offices and a cinema complex. The undeveloped area south of the present constructions will be part of the master plan that the architect Daniel Liebeskind has created.

Ferring was one of Ørestad’s first new residents. Via its relocation to Ørestad City, Ferring was able to consolidate its Malmö, Copen­ ha­gen and Kiel activities in its new 20-storey headquarters. Ferring International Centre houses core functions such as product devel­opment, drug registration, and international marketing. The building is owned by Norrporten.

Norrporten has constructed an office complex in Ørestad City next to Ferring. Apart from offices, the building will also house an atrium giving space to a restaurant and other activities. Its current tenants are the insurance company Skandia who has rented 35 per cent of Neroport and Bombardier Transportation.

Telia’s Technological Centre is an international junction for data traf­fic, connecting Telia’s Backbone Net in Denmark with Telia’s Viking Ring and a transatlantic cable.

Norwegian owned KLP Ejendomme has built this eight-storey of­fice building centrally in Ørestad City. KLP Ejendomme offers tenancies of varying size, starting at 500 m2 adapted to meet the needs of any company or institution. Its current tenants are Atkins, Han­delsbanken, Medicon Valley Academy, UCB Pharma, Novo Nordisk Scandinavia, Dell, Accenture and GlaxoSmithKline.

IT University of Copenhagen

The IT-University accommodates 3,000 students and houses teaching and research facilities, a multimedia lab, a student café and restaurant. On the University’s 5th floor lies the new IT Growth Centre – “5TE”, which is an environment for entrepreneurs, new starters, companies and researchers focusing on creativity and IT. Network Crossroads Copenhagen is also housed in the IT University. The State Science and Education Buildings have purchased 11,000 m2, but use of the site has not yet been determined.

Karen Blixen Parken is located on the waterfront of the University Canal. The 212 family dwellings are divided into cooperative, owner-occupied and rented flats, each averaging 85 m2 in size.

Its current tenants are Masterfoods, BearingPoint, ­Bio­gens, Brogen Idec. Denmark, Nikon, Shell Gas (LPG Danmark) and Rae Systems Europe.

Tietgenkollegiet (Residence hall) Size: 25,000 m2 Status: Inaugurated in September 2006. Architects: Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma A/S Use of the site: Residence hall Link: www.tietgenkollegiet.dk Nordea Danmark Fonden has constructed this distinctive, circular residence hall with an approximate 400-dwelling capacity. The circular form of the construction creates a common central court­yard. The single and two-room dwellings are located along the build­ing’s outer wall overlooking the University Canal and the Landskabelige Kanal (the Scenic Canal). The common rooms of the Residence Hall – music workshops for rhythmic and classical music, laundry, computer room, common rooms, administration etc. – face the inner courtyard.

Bikuben Kollegiet (Residence Hall) Size: 6,800 m2 Status: Inaugurated in September 2006. Architects: A.A.R.T. Use of the site: Residence hall Link: www.kollegiefonden.dk Kollegiefonden Bikuben has built a 7-storey residence hall on the corner of Njalsgade and Amager Fælledvej. The residence hall contains 96 one-room dwellings and four two-room dwellings, three dwellings for handicapped people and four two-storey family dwellings. The residence hall also contains an ex­ercise room, s­ tudio, laundry room, reading room, lounge, assembly hall as well as communal kitchens and living rooms.

NCC has constructed 91 apartments in blocks of 3 to 5 storeys, and 55 two-storey non-detached houses. The building complex consist of 12 residential groups sharing a common entry forecourt. The ­dwellings vary in size from 86 m2 to 124 m2.

Pension Danmark has constructed 180 owner-occupied and rental apartments overlooking Amager Fælled nature reserve and the Ørestad City Park. The size of the apartments range from 70 to 147 m2. Pension Danmark bought an additional 7,600 m2 in 2005 for the construction of additional dwellings.

Ørestad Gymnasium, an upper secondary school, was opened in May 2007. For four successive years, this school has been the most applied to in its category. With its 800 students, Ørestad Gymnasium does much for the vibrant urban atmosphere of Ørestad. The profile of the school is media, communication and culture.

Stage 1 comprises 63 rented apartments distributed on 11 storeys. Stage 2 comprises 57 coop­erative and owner-occupied apartments distributed over 8 storeys. In parts of the building, the top storey has been converted into a 150 m2 roof garden. On the ground floor the supermarket Netto has opened a store.

Architects: PLOT arkitekter Use of the site: Housing Link: www.vmhusene.dk VM husene are two very unconventional buildings of 4-12 storeys in Ørestad City with approximately 212 rented, cooperative, and own­eroccupied apartments. There are 76 different kinds of apartments, and residents can adapt the apartments to suit their changing needs. Bicycle parking, common rooms/assembly halls have been established in the buildings, along with an integrated day-care cen­tre, which accommodates 48 children. The houseowners´ association opened a new pocket park between V-Huset and Porthuset.

As part of “Boligslangen” in Ørestad Nord, FSBbolig has constructed approximately 114 social housing units, where of 15 are senior/handicapfriendly. An integrated day-care centre accommo­dating 36 nursery children and 44 kindergarten children is also situated in “Boligslangen”.

Universitetshaven Size: 19,000 m2 Status: Inaugurated August 2006-2007 Architects: Arkitema Use of the site: Housing Link: www.kuben.dk As part of “Boligslangen” in Ørestad Nord, Kuben has constructed two 7-storey buildings to house 170 cooperative and owner-occupied apartments of the buildings are connected by a portal spanning across the canal. All 170 apartments have balconies overlooking the green areas.

Københavns Energi (Vejlandshuset) Size: 13,500 m2 Status: Inaugurated January 2005. Architects: schmidt, hammer & lassen Use of the site: Commercial Link: www.ke.dk The headquarters of Københavns Energi in Ørestad City, Vejlandshuset, is located close to the Bella Center Metro Station. Inside the white, cubical building, there is a large light patio. About 550 people are employed in Vejlandshuset. There are other tenants than Københavns Energi in Vejlandshuset, though – for example, Carlson Wagonlit Travel resides in Vejlandshuset.

Porthuset A/S has constructed 165 owner-occupied apartments in Øre­ stad City, east of the Metro´s elevated track. Porthuset has the shape of a sculptural three-winged building. The apartments vary in size between 54 and 140 m2. In the ground floor you will find a kiosk, the restaurant VISA Sushi, and a driving school.

123 social housing units has been constructed in Ørestad City. The architects 3XN have designed the eight-storey building. Irregular surfaces and roof gardens invite the green element inside and up over the surface of the building, providing light and space.

The architects from Tegnestuen Vandkunsten have designed this outstanding residential structure. KAB was responsible for the construction of 128 subsidized housing units. A day-care centre, which accommodates 60 children is established in the building, along with a neighbourhood building with café and meeting rooms.

Lejerbo has constructed “Signalhuset” on the corner of Arne Jacobsens Allé and Edvard Thomsens Vej in Ørestad City. With its 288 housing units for young people distributed on 9 floors, these dwellings have a flexible design, which allows easy conversion of the apartments into traditional family dwellings.

The two-room, threeroom, and four-room apartments vary in size from 83 to 113 m2.

Architects: Domus Arkitekter Use of the site: Housing Link: www.golfpark.dk Nordbornholms Byggeforretning and Cargill have constructed 149 apartments on the corner of the park in Ørestad City, near Center Boulevard. Ten­ants enjoy the view of the Amager Fælled nature reserve and the golf course, the Royal Copenhagen Golf Center.

On behalf of De Københavnske Ejendomsselskaber, the Sjælsø Group A/S has built 63 rental dwellings in Ørestad City, close to the Bella Center Metro Station. The height of the Bella Hus building varies from four to seven storeys. There is a clothing store on the ground floor.

Metropolen has shops on the ground floor; the other floors will house offices. The office complex is located at Njalsgade in ­Øre­stad Nord close to Islands Brygge Metro Station. The urban space at Metropolen and the station square is being developed with a water basin and a rambla.

The small private school Ørestad Friskole started in the summer of 2005. The school has been founded by a group of parents who wished to create a school focusing on academic achievement and well-being in a healthy and safe environment. The school has 130 students.

The office complex is situated next to the first office build­ing of KLP Ejendomme A/S on 17, Arne Jacobsens Allé near Ørestad ­station. KLP Ejendomme offers tenancies of various sizes. At present Sofus ­Berendsen and Zurich Nordic have moved in.

Ørestad Down Town & Ørestad Business Center Size: 25,000 m2 (205,000 m2) Status: Construction period unresolved Architects: Daniel Liebeskind (north of the motorway) and Niels Torp (south) Use of the site: Commercial Link: www.orestaddowntown.dk, www.orestadbusinesscenter.dk NCC Property Development A/S and City & Port Development have entered into a cooperation agreement regard­ing planning and development in Ørestad. In accordance with the agreement, NCC will construct a total of 205,000 m2 of commercial buildings in Ørestad over the next five years. The many square metres will be distributed by 100,000 square metres in Ørestad Down Town north of the motorway and 105,000 square metres in Ørestad Business Center south of the motorway. The world famous architect, Daniel Liebeskind, has created the master plan for the area north of the motorway which has been named Ørestad Down Town, while the Norwegian Niels Torp designed the plan for Ørestad Business Center.

CabInn is designed by the world-famous architect Daniel Liebeskind. The construction is part of the co-operation agreement on city development signed by NCC Property Development A/S and City & Port Development. The neighbours of Cab Inn is Field’s and the Royal Golf Center.

The first two phases of building the block is 36 semi-detached houses and 83 council flats for families.

St. Frederikslund Holding A/S has constructed 476 owner-occupied and rented dwellings in Ørestad Syd. The site is placed to the far south with direct views over the future lake area and the nature reserve of Kalvebod Fælled. The ground floor already houses a café and a so-called integrated day care centre for 148 children. Furthermore, there will also be a number of minor businesses in 8TALLET.

The site is located to the far south with direct views of the lake area and the nature reserve of Kalve­bod Fælled. The first dwellers moved in in March 2009. In the first stage, flats to be owned by the residents will be built – the second stage will see the building of 49 council-supported family flats.

Centrally located in the Øresund City, Høpfner A/S and Dansk Olie Kompagni have constructed 80 dwellings on top of a multi-storey car park holding parking facilities for 480 vehicles. VM BJERGET rises from ground level in one corner to a height of over 30 metres in the opposite corner. The dwellings located on the slanting terrain created by the differences of level, includes large roof gardens. The car park is located at the inside BJERGET. CPH City & Port Development set aside 1,600 sqm for creative commercial activities. For instance, the ground floor has been rented to a deli and to a bakery.

Architects: Foster+Partners in cooperation with DISSING+WEITLING Use of the site: Business – office building, conference facilities and hotel Link: www.copenhagentowers.dk Sjælsø Gruppen is behind the project Copenhagen Towers, which will be built in Ørestad Syd in the area between the motorway and Hannemanns Allé. When finished the whole complex will house a wide range of businesses, restaurants, conference facilities and shops. There will be three integrated 20 storey tower blocks. The height of the other buildings will be 7 to 9 stories. The plans are to build offices for firms of various sizes, from quite small tenancies to large one-firm office buildings. In the first stage, all tenancies are occupied. The four-star hotel Crowne Plaza and DI, The Confederation of Danish Industry, have moved in at Copenhagen Towers.

Klasi Holistic House A/S – Wellness Center Size: 17,300 m2 Status: Unresolved Architects: schmidt hammer lassen Use of the site: Wellness centre and hotel Link: www.shl.dk The Icelandic company Klasi hf and the architectural firm of smidt hammer lassen are behind the construction of a wellness centre and hotel in Ørestad Syd. The wellness centre will be located to the far south with direct views over the future lake area and the nature reserve of Kalvebod Fælled. By inspiration from the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik, Iceland, Holistic House has the ambition to become the No. 1 wellness centre in Scandinavia. The end result will be a health centre combined with a recreational hotel and conference centre.

Arkitema architects has moved its Copenhagen headquarter from Søndre Frihavn into Ørestad Nord. In close collaboration with C.W. Obel, Arkitema has developed the plans of the constructions. In addition to Arkitema’s headquarter, the complex accommodates offices and a fitness center. The ground floor houses the café Kong Hans.

SEB Pension and the consulting and engineering group of Rambøll has built a 40,000 m2 office complex in Ørestad Syd. With its influx of more than 1,600 employees, Rambøll will be the main tenant of these premises. The complex will be located at Hannemanns Allé in Ørestad Syd – near Ørestad Station, Field’s shopping centre, Metro and the Øresund motorway.

Nordkranen has the option on the building rights for a combined project consisting of residential and non-residential buildings bordering on the city park in Ørestad City. The buildings are planned to demonstrate resource awareness and energy efficiency. The plan for this project was selected after four teams of architects and engineers specializing in sustainability had been invited to a competition. The winning project was designed by CUBO architects, COWI and passivhus.dk.
