eWare winding up the year with a bang. This is one of my favorite issues because it allows us to spotlight our local businesses and citizens who work hard daily to make Shreveport and Bossier City a wonderful place to live.
In the Annual Best of SB, you will also enjoy reading about Will Andress, the man behind the Emmett Hook Theatre. Dr. Andress is now enjoying a well-deserved retirement. He has put his heart and soul into that theatre and produced some of the finest shows the SBC has seen. He will certainly be missed but never forgotten.
In politics, a subject I’m sure we’re all weary of by now, we offer a perspective on a new administration and what it could mean for the people in our area. On a lighter, more entertaining note, we have a delightful piece on one of Shreveport’s institutions: The Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet. This organization brings more to us than just point shoes and tutus.
As we look ahead to a new and bountiful 2025, we invite you along as we anticipate great things in this: our Silver Jubilee.

Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet
Over 50 Years
Entertaining and Enriching
Shreveport/Bossier
By Casey Allen
Founded in 1973, The Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet has been entertaining and enriching our community continuously for more than 50 years. One of the longest running arts organizations in Shreveport, The Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet, or SMB, performs two full-length ballets each year. The Nutcracker, which SMB has been performing now for 40 years, is presented each year during the holiday season. Each spring, another full-length classic is performed; we’ll be treated to The Wizard of Oz this spring of 2025.
Being a nonprofit, SMB relies on fundraising. Much of it accomplished by the dancers, board
members secure corporate sponsorships, as well.
The ballet also has grants through the Community Foundation and Shreveport Regional Arts Council, or SRAC. Perhaps you were able to check out one of SMB’s biggest fundraisers, Ballet After Dark, last month at The Chef’s Table. The annual wine tasting and silent auction is always a fun and exciting event, with all proceeds going to SMB. Check out SMB’s Facebook page, which is full of other ways to donate; a fundraising event at Texas Roadhouse this fall is just one example of many. Never be afraid to support the arts!
Shreveport/Bossier has always had a great and underrated arts community. From live theater to the annual Film Prize Fest, we are loaded with talent in this region. Ballet dancers are not only super talented, but
they must be super in-shape, as well. Board President Krysta Cyr says ballet is a “very strong sport, one that requires a lot of core strength.”
“Our dancers train during the summer, as well,” says Cyr. “We’ve had dancers go to Kansas to train and Florida to train to make sure they are staying strong.”
Cyr was elected president of the board in 2021 after serving as a general board member and treasurer. She says the president position is a good one for her because of her natural neutrality: “I’ve never danced before,” she said, “and I don’t have family members involved with it.”
SMB has its own studio space and office located on North Hearne Avenue in Shreveport where the dancers go each Saturday for a couple of hours to
rehearse. Leading those rehearsals is Kathryn Drake McDowell, SMB Artistic Director. She was the interim Artistic Director for the 2021-2022 season and has been leading the charge since.
Originally from Shreveport and a dancer herself, McDowell earned a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. While in Norman, she majored in dance and minored in math. She danced with OU for four years and traveled to France twice while in college. After graduating, she was with the Lexington Ballet Company in Kentucky for three seasons and even had a stint in Seoul, South Korea as part of the Universal Ballet Company.
International! McDowell officially retired as a dancer in 2005. Her full-time job is teaching AP Calculus at Caddo Magnet High School.
Left brain AND right brain. Right now, she has the dancers rehearsing full runthroughs of The Nutcracker, which opens Saturday, December 14th at 6:30 P.M., with a matinee the following day at 2:30. All shows will be at Shreveport’s Riverview Hall & Theater. Friday, Dec 13, SMB will present three performances exclusively for schools. Students will be bussed to the performances and given the opportunity to participate in a questionand-answer portion after each performance.
McDowell says The Nutcracker is “a great show for third graders; that’s such a good age to get exposed to that. “In the first act, they get to see the party scene and all the pretty costumes. Then, they are introduced to the soldiers and all the lights.”
Ballet, like any type of live theater, is great for not only
the audience but also for the performers. “There is absolutely nothing like live theater,” says McDowell.
“Whether it’s ballet, a symphony or a musical, there is nothing like the relationship between the audience and the performers. Especially for us, we engage the audience in a different way because we don’t talk.”
“We get to take you to a different place for two hours,” says McDowell.
“Ballet is a relief, an expression for me, for the dancers and for the audience. “It’s almost therapeutic for us. No matter what the dancers have going on, whether it be family stuff or body image issues, we get to leave it all at the door.”
SMB has two companies of dancers, a junior and senior company, that consists of dancers ages 10 and up.
Most of the dancers are middle and high school students. For the big shows, they incorporate younger dancers, ages 5 and up. They have been rehearsing for The Nutcracker since mid-August.
And come performance day, McDowell will be right there with the dancers backstage. She is not one of those directors who likes to watch from the audience.
“I am always backstage during the performances,” McDowell says. “I am super-invested in my girls. I know this girl over here needs a pep talk or someone needs this. Most of them are children.”
Back in October, McDowell and the dancers were at the Red River Revel for a performance featuring excerpts from Sleeping Beauty, Bach and even the Beatles.
On performance day at Riverview Theater, the ballet won’t be the only event happening. SMB will have their Fourth Annual Nutcracker Market going on, too, with vendors and opportunities for dancers, families and patrons to hang out. It’s a good chance to support local businesses before you do a pirouette over to the ballet! SMB will have a market for The Wizard of Oz in April, too. Tickets are going fast for The Nutcracker. Get them on SMB’s website or go to their Facebook page to purchase. They also have cool hoodies available for purchase on their website. A good time of year for those.
Support local art and local business vendors in midDecember at Riverview Theater. And don’t forget about The Wizard of Oz in the spring. No leotard required!

BOLD BEAUTIFUL & MODERN
How One Home is Redefining Southern Living. Step inside this architectural gem and experience its harmonious blend of design, natural light, and surroundings. With its unique character and thoughtful craftsmanship, this one-of-a-kind home pushes the boundaries of modern design.
By Adam Bailey
When it comes to the housing market in Bossier City, many homes follow traditional Southern designs, often featuring Ranch or Craftsman styles. But hidden among the oak trees and azalea bushes of the exclusive Stonebridge community lies a thoroughly modern marvel that is redefining Southern living.
“This home is unlike anything else you’ll find in this part of the state,” says Debbie Hynes, the Century 21 agent listing the property. “It’s a true masterpiece of contemporary design that seamlessly blends cutting-edge style with all the comforts of a luxurious family home.”
Built in 2023 for that year’s Parade of Homes showcase, this home is the creation of Michael Jeane of MJ Construction—a respected local builder who has been wowing crowds with his innovative designs for over a decade. Along with Michael, designers Amanda Thaxton and George Plaxco were brought in to complete this incredibly beautiful space.
“Amanda and George really poured their hearts into this home,” Hynes explains. “They were determined to create something that would turn heads and challenge people’s preconceptions about what a ‘Southern home’ should look like.”
And challenge those preconceptions, it does. From the dramatically angled roofline to the seamless walls of glass that blur the line between indoor and outdoor living, every inch of this 2,887-square-foot stunner screams modern
sophistication—and that’s before you even step inside.
The exterior alone is enough to make you do a doubletake. It’s so different from the traditional brick-andwhite-column aesthetic that dominates this part of Louisiana. What makes it unique is its bold, almost futuristic feel.
And while the home’s curb appeal is striking, it’s the breathtaking interior that truly leaves a lasting impression. From the soaring 21-foot ceilings in the great room to the sleek, high-end appliances in the gourmet kitchen, every square foot has been meticulously designed to maximize both form and function.
Take, for instance, the jaw-dropping custom iron staircase that curves up to the
second-floor loft. Not only is it a stunning sculptural centerpiece, but Hynes explains that the open design was specifically chosen to maintain the airy, light-filled ambiance throughout the home. “That railing is a work of art,” she marvels. “The team at Iron Clad Fabrication did an incredible job creating something that’s both visually striking and functionally sound. It’s the kind of detail you just don’t see in your average house.”
The same can be said for the one-of-a-kind fireplace in the great room, which features a unique textured finish created through a meticulous layering process by The Finishing Touch design team. “Carrie Rodie and Jamie Davis really worked their magic with that fireplace,” Hynes says. “The end result is this gorgeous, almost
3D-like effect that adds so much depth and character to the space.”
Of course, no discussion of the home would be complete without mentioning its showstopping kitchen.
Clad in gleaming white cabinetry, accented with gold hardware, and anchored by a massive quartz island, it’s the culinary oasis that would make even the most seasoned chef swoon.
“The current owner took this kitchen to the next level with his impeccable design choices,” Hynes explains.
“From the Calacatta gold backsplash to the premium GE Profile appliances, every detail has been meticulously curated to create a space that’s both beautiful and incredibly functional.”
But while the kitchen may be the heart of the home, it’s the sprawling primary suite that seals the deal.
Boasting wood-tile floors, a freestanding soaker tub, and a gigantic walk-in shower with gold fixtures, it’s a true oasis of luxury and relaxation.
“This primary bathroom is just stunning,” Hynes raves. “The team spared no expense in creating a space that feels like your own personal spa. And the fact that it connects directly to the covered patio and outdoor area makes it feel like your own private resort.”
Speaking of the outdoor living spaces, Hynes highlights the thoughtful design choices that elevate this home’s impressive curb appeal. Every element, from
the custom concrete patio to the woodplank ceiling on the covered porch, has been carefully selected to create a cohesive, high-end aesthetic.
As impressive as all these features are the true heart of this home lies in the passion and attention to detail that went into every aspect of its creation. The current owner has taken the home to new heights with impeccable design choices—and it’s that sense of craftsmanship and care that makes the house unique.
“The design team really has an incredible eye for design,” Hynes marvels. “They took all the amazing architectural features and elevated them to a whole new level. This house feels like it belongs in the pages of Architectural Digest, but it also has this wonderful sense of lived-in comfort. It’s the perfect blend of form and function.”
For Hynes, that harmonious fusion of style and substance is what makes this home truly special. “This isn’t just a house—it’s a work of art,” she says.
“And the fact that it’s located in Bossier City, with all the community amenities that Stonebridge has to offer, makes it an absolute gem.”
Living in the Stonebridge neighborhood is like finding your slice of Southern charm wrapped in a bow of suburban sophistication. Picture this: tree-lined streets, manicured lawns, and homes that effortlessly balance traditional elegance with modern appeal.
As Hynes looks out over the great room, she can’t help but smile. “You know, in a market where most are still debating between beige and off-white for their shutters, this house struts in wearing gold hardware and glass walls. It’s like someone dropped a Tesla in a parking lot full of Cadillacs—and somehow, it just works.”
And in Bossier City, that’s exactly the kind of disruption the luxury market needs.

So, You Think You Want to Open a Restaurant?
By Seva May
Have you ever found yourself flipping through the channels on your television, landing on a cooking show, and becoming mesmerized by food preparation? Or tuning in to one of those reality “contest” programs like Top Chef, Chef’s Table, or Good Eats and thinking, “I could do that…easy!” If you have, you’re not alone. Probably millions of wanna-be chefs and really great cooks have taken the bold step into the world of restaurant ownership without thinking it through. Before you get in line and find yourself in the next TV version of Hell’s Kitchen, you might want to listen to someone who has been pretty successful at running an eating establishment and has lived to tell the tale.
Owning a restaurant wasn’t at the top of the list of career choices for Don O’Byrne. In fact, “It wasn’t even on the list after leaving Los Angeles and catering to that capricious crowd,” Don said. Don left Shreveport mid-college not knowing what he wanted to do with his life. He worked various jobs in restaurants, five-star hotels, and in sales in Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Atlanta, and Dallas before he decided to return to Louisiana and finish his degree in Political Science. In 2002, after experiencing corporate “layoffs” one too many times, Don began laying the groundwork for opening a restaurant that would feature authentic coastal Baja cuisine. While working odd jobs to fill in the gap, he looked for investors, a location, and a bank that would help him get his dream off the ground. It was after multiple denials by banks and investors that Don finally secured an SBA loan from a small local bank and with everything he had in his savings, he poured it into Don Juanz. He eventually filed and secured a registered US trademark for his creation.
As with anything worth doing, it took hard work, lots of mistakes, and numerous bumps in the road but finally, Don Juanz was opened in Bossier City. It was the first fast-casual restaurant in Bossier City, and it took a while to train his guests on the
menu and the concept. Don is proud to say that 85% of the original menu items are still being served today. “Every year we keep doing the same thing and we just keep getting better at it,” He says.
In 2016, Don opened a second location in Shreveport and is currently finalizing a third location in Tyler, Texas. He and his wife, Amy, and their son, Bailey (who will be handling the Tyler Don Juanz) are the perfect examples of working smart and with purpose to achieve success. Don is quick to say that in the restaurant business, you get something different every day. “It’s like opening a Pandora’s Box,” he said. “You can start the day with an agenda and as soon as you walk through the door, you get a new agenda handed to you.”
It's a fact that operating a restaurant is one of the toughest businesses to be in. According to the National Restaurant Association, about 60% of restaurants fail in their first year, and 80% fail within the first five years. But television and movies that use a restaurant as a backdrop make it look so easy, right? Behind the scenes are high operational costs, an inventory that can and will spoil (leading to waste), and there’s always a struggle with maintaining and managing a workforce. Then there are the strict food safety and hygiene
standards and strict regulations that have to be followed. Not to mention, a competitive market filled with customers who have high expectations and cameras on their phones with apps linked to review sites.
Still want to open a restaurant? If so, then take a couple of pages from Don O’Byrne’s playbook.
First, Don suggests you heed the warning of Warren Buffet, “Never invest in a business you cannot understand.” Next, be prepared to drive the car you built. In other words, you should have the ability to do everything that is done under your roof because one day, you will have to do it. How long can you go without getting paid? Cash flowing an owner’s salary often gets put on hold until all debt and expenses are paid and sometimes it can be a long time before that happens. Know who your demographic is. Don’t count anyone you know as part of this demographic. Look for economic indicators to ensure there’s enough of your demographic to support your efforts without a competing restaurant closing to do so. Changing customers’ palettes takes time.
You shouldn’t rely on anyone but yourself to be with you long-term until they’ve worked with you for at least five years. Build a strong team that wants to work with you. Be their role
model by showing a willingness to step in to help them do their job and achieve success. You can’t do this if you’re only throwing money into it and hoping it’ll pay off. Learn the culture of your employees, otherwise, you could end up working in somebody else’s business and learning their culture. Don has been lucky to have quite a few long-term employees, which is rare in this industry.
“Watch your flock. If you can’t count sheep, you surely won’t be able to count your inventory twice a day to remain profitable in this business”, said Don. Your operational setup should start in a good location, which can significantly impact a restaurant’s success. It should also be immaculately clean and comfortable so that your guests will want to return again and again. Don’t try to be everything to everyone. Stick to a menu that you know and do it well. Advertise where you think your demographic grazes.
Lastly, Don warns that owning a restaurant is not for the faint of heart. It’s a huge sacrifice and a test of your physical prowess. Undertaking a restaurant launch can be hard on personal relationships because you will be putting in long hours and time away from family. It can be scandalous. In the first month of opening his Shreveport location, Don and Don Juanz was a target of social media libel filled with obscene and insidious comments that were directed at injuring the business’s reputation. The “ghost writer” even attempted to libel Don’s family which led Don to seek legal assistance from a detective and an attorney. “We learned that the “ghost writer” used nine different online IP addresses that were tracked to a certain geographical area that led us to who we think the “ghost writer “was. Then it stopped abruptly,” said Don.
You must be willing to persevere and overcome catastrophes such as this and unforeseen events like COVID-19 or the stock market collapse in 2008. “We’ve overcome so much adversity just to do business here that I thank God I’m still here”, said Don. Covid set Don Juanz’s expansion plans into Texas back by four years, but with perseverance, Don has managed to expand his restaurant brand at a time when many others are shuttering their doors.
Are there benefits to owning a restaurant? Absolutely. You are your own boss. You can pride yourself on your product and your ability to boost the local economy by providing jobs that, in turn, deepens your involvement in your community. There is also the potential for a pretty good financial gain if you work smart and are willing to learn and adapt as you go. It's not for everyone and those that can do it are already doing it. There are so many special ingredients that go into opening and running a restaurant that it becomes a well-written recipe. Now that you’ve tasted a teaspoon of what it takes to own a successful restaurant, you might be happier just doing your part to support those brave souls who have managed to keep their doors open.
As Louisiana’s own James Carville once said, “It’s the economy stupid.” Well, apparently, the Democrats ignored one of their most infamous strategists. Donald J. Trump has beaten the Harris campaign decisively, and he will take the oath of office as the 47th President of the United States in January. This makes Trump only the second president in U.S. history to serve non-

By Kevin Hinson
consecutive terms, the other being Grover Cleveland in the late 1800s as the 22nd and 24th president. Trump’s first term was recent enough that most people probably remember what the economy was like and its effect on our everyday lives...what about this next term?
Some of the finer points of Trump’s first term may not have been known by the populace, but here are some facts and figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics from 2019, the last year before the Coronavirus disrupted the world’s economy: in November, the U.S. unemployment rate was at its lowest in half a century at 3.5%, seven million people were lifted
off food stamps (SNAP). Seven million jobs had been added to the economy. The average annual income for American households was also the highest ever recorded, at $68,700 a year. The DOW Jones repeatedly set record highs, which were over 20,000 and 30,000 back then (and has continued climbing through the Biden administration, likely because of Trump’s deregulations and Tax Cuts
and Jobs Act of 2017 that was still in effect, which Trump is looking to extend beyond its original sunset date of 2025 in his next term), along with the S&P 500 and NASDAQ. Within a week of Trump’s reelection, the DOW Jones set a new record high, without him even being in office yet: Wall Street knows what a Trump presidency means.
Observing what happened
during the Biden administration also tells us what not to expect from the upcoming Trump administration. Inflation (which Ronald Reagan once called “the cruelest tax on the poor”) was immediately felt by all Americans after President Biden took office: he shut down the building permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline on his first day in office, which was a 1,200mile pipeline designed to
transfer 35 million gallons of crude oil a day from Western Canada to Nebraska, and then to oil refineries on our Gulf Coast. When energy became scarcer without demand going down... prices for everything went up: as of this year, grocery prices have risen by almost a third and gas prices by 50%, with a 20.1% increase in prices overall as of this summer, while prices only rose slightly under 7.8% over Trump’s presidency. This inflation peaked at a 40-year high in 2022. Biden cited climate change concerns as the cause for shutting down the pipeline. This move cost Americans dearly with
cost-of-living increases in every sector: the Senate Joint Economic Committee, using data from the Consumer Price Index and the Consumer Expenditure Survey, compiled a report in November 2023 showing that American households needed an average of $11,434 more in November 2023 than they did in January of 2021 to maintain the same standard of living (Louisianians needed $9,594 more). Inflation was only at 1.4% when Trump left office.
What are some of the “human costs” these policies have had? Because of the most rapid increase
in mortgage interest rates since 1981 (peaking at 7.79% in October 2023), monthly mortgage payments were 96% higher in November this year than in January 2021. By March of 2023, Americans delinquent on their car note reached its highest level in 17 years and jumped 20.4% from the previous year. Businesses? Retail stores are closing or have closed by the thousands: 900 CVSs, 1,200 Walgreens, and 600 Family Dollars, to name a few, and major retail chains like Bed Bath and Beyond have gone bankrupt. Nearly half of small businesses surveyed in July said they wouldn’t survive a second term under Biden, and since Kamala Harris said “There’s not a thing that comes to mind” that she would do differently than Biden, those businesses would have failed had she been elected, businesses
like Maxwell’s Market in Shreveport that closed in January this year. Maxwell’s likely wouldn’t have closed under a second Trump administration.
So, what is Trump proposing for his second term? More of the same: he wants to extend the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (which was going to sunset at the end of 2025), bring back SALT deductions (they’ve been capped at $10,000 by the TCJA), reduce the corporate tax rate even further from the 21% rate he lowered it to previously to 15%, “Drill baby drill” (which brings down the cost of domestic energy), and perhaps his personal favorite...tariffs. Much ado has been made about how tariffs will affect the price of goods for the American consumer. After living four years under Trump and Biden, judge for yourselves which administration goods are cheaper for you to buy. That is the actual effect of tariffs.
What could all this mean for Shreveport-Bossier? Well, Shreveport’s newest investor and currently the secondlargest property owner in downtown Shreveport, “50 Cent,” posted a selfie with President Trump on Instagram shortly after Trump’s win congratulating him. Mr. Jackson’s enthusiasm is likely linked to Trump’s economic success in the past, which could help his future pursuits (he wishes to become Shreveport’s top property owner). The old GM plant that was shuttered in 2012, which at one point had 3,000 employees, has been running in a limited capacity since, with Glovis America using 125,000 square feet of the 3.1 million square foot facility. The plant recently had a new tenant come in, an energy innovation company named SLB (a shortened version of “Schlumberger”), occupying another 1 million square feet for its operation, bringing in almost 600 new jobs. An improved, pro-business
economy could spur further use of the plant. It should be noted our very own representative in Congress and the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, has been consistently praised by Trump and has a nearchummy relationship with him, which could lead to favor for our area.
Outside of the nitty gritty details, Trump’s win more than likely means locals will have more money in their pocket, businesses won’t close, some could even start, there won’t be as much pain at the pump, it will be easier to buy a home...our well-being will feel prioritized. The help will be too little too late for some people... but better late than never. Trump has made no bones about who he prioritizes: America First.
William
Andress, Emmett Hook Center bringing live theatre
The state-of-theart Emmett Hook Center at First Methodist Church in downtown Shreveport has provided our community with live theater — 75 plays and musicals — for the past 15 years.
Dr. William Andress, Director of Fine Arts at First Methodist, is out of the spotlight but on center stage. In his 54 years at the church and in the arts, he’s witnessed the theater scene’s growth — and has played a part in much of it.
“As soon as I got here in 1971, we started building,” says Andress. “There was
a paint store next door to our chapel about where our theater is now; the kind owner let me have it. We had some teenagers come to clean it out and paint it.”
Andress and the boys turned it into a 125-seat ‘theater in the round’ where they performed Snoopy and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, to name a couple.
Andress quickly realized that the relatively small venue wasn’t going to work. He needed a bigger stage. And way more seats. So, they moved to a bigger building in the church where they performed classics like Annie Get Your Gun and Oliver! That didn’t work either.
So, they moved to an armory off Youree Drive for a little while and performed the
musical South Pacific. They even had a moat around the stage for that one. And still … they needed more room.
“The church used to have a bakery right next door,” Andress says. “We renovated that and started using it to perform.”
Anyone who has been involved with theater knows it’s nice to have your own space. A theater troupe is great, but having a building to call your own is a home away from home.
“The church said they were going to start raising funds for a children’s building and asked what I thought about raising money for a new theater,” says Andress.
They raised the funds for the Emmett Hook Center, as well as a new parking lot. Quite a long way from the 125-seat ‘theater in the round’ days.
Andress says he’s proud of all the performances he’s been involved with at Emmett Hook Center, but one stands out from the rest.
“The highlight of my life in theater was when we did Les Misérables,” says Andress. “We had 10 soldout performances; 3,500 people came to see it. We had no tickets sold at the door, either. It was all pre-sales.”
Andress himself isn’t much of an actor. He just loves theater. “I acted once at Centenary College after I first moved here,” says Andress. “I was the male lead in Little Mary Sunshine.”
Originally from El Dorado, Arkansas, Andress also met his wife at Centenary. He got his doctorate at Florida State
University.
Emmett Hook Center has had several main directors and choreographers through the years. Richard Schmidt and Carol Anglin were directing and choreographing the plays and musicals for a while. After that, the local acting legend Richard Folmer and Ginger Folmer handled the duties. Other notable directors have been Ryan Williams, Seva May, Robert Crews, Rocky Maddox and Joe Todaro.
If you have never been to Emmett Hook or seen a show there, you don’t have to wait long. Their next one is the first weekend of December. They will be offering up Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, directed by Rocky Maddox, starting Friday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. There will be two performances on Saturday — 3 and 7:30 p.m. — and a Sunday matinee at 3.
Coming in 2025, The Trip to Bountiful is scheduled for March and the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof for mid-summer. Get more information anytime at emmetthookcenter.org. I was able to see the classic Neil Simon play Barefoot in the Park earlier this year at Emmett Hook, and the acoustics in there are great. The stained-glass windows are really pretty, and the stage is huge. It is a great venue to take a date or family and enjoy live theater.
Support the local arts and check it out! Chances are good that, as downtown audiences have been for 15 seasons, you’ll get Hook-ed.

Davor Piljak Inducted into Centenary College of Louisiana 2024 Hall of Fame
Davor Poljak, Co-founder,
Partner and Managing Director of Poljak Group
Wealth Management at Steward Partners, was inducted into Centenary College of Louisiana’s 2024 Hall of Fame. An Alumni Awards Banquet was held on October 24 on the Centenary College campus to celebrate Poljak and other alumni who were recognized for their achievements and dedication to the Centenary community.
Poljak, a Wealth Manager with 20 years of industry experience, earned his M.B.A. from Louisiana State University-Shreveport and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Centenary College of Louisiana. He is also a Certified Portfolio Manager (CPM®), a designation he earned at Columbia University in New York City.
Davor was instrumental in establishing several scholarships at Centenary College, including the Coach Jimmy Harrison Memorial Endowed Scholarship, Jasmin Alibalić Award, and, most recently, the Poljak Family Endowment fund designated for the support of tennis program operations at Centenary College.
“Davor's continuous involvement and partnership with Centenary College over the last 30 years and his philanthropic work to many other great causes are a testament to his passion for supporting and enhancing the quality of life in his local community,” said Denis Poljak, CoFounder, and Managing Director of Poljak Group Wealth Management.
“We congratulate Davor for his dedication to Centenary College and all of his contributions to our community.”
Davor has been a member of the Rotary Club of Shreveport since 2014 and is currently a Paul Harris Fellow. Davor resides in Shreveport with his wife, Megan, and their sons, David and Danny.
LPB Dr. Vikram Chatrath Performs 100 th Surgery Implanting Zimmer Biomet Persona® OsseoTI® Keel Tibia
Vikram Chatrath, MD, of Willis Knighton Orthopedics Bossier, has
performed the 100 th total knee replacement using Zimmer Biomet’s Persona® OsseoTi® Keel Tibia. The surgery was performed at Willis Knighton Bossier.
Persona OsseoTI Keel Tibia is a new anatomic tibia created using 3D printing technology. It allows surgeons to use the latest cementless technology, which helps preserve bone stock for the patient. The Persona OsseoTI Keel Tibia is a great option for younger patients and those with good bone stock who can avoid using bone cement and its possible complications, Dr. Chatrath said.
OsseoTI components are placed using the ROSA robotic system. Willis Knighton was the first to offer ROSA in north Louisiana and is the only healthcare provider offering ROSA in the region. When used with the ROSA robotic system, there are multiple benefits, Dr. Chatrath said. The implants are highly durable, have precise component positioning, and result in faster recovery time, minimal pain, improved knee stability, improved surgical outcome, and patient satisfaction.
“In my role as medical director of joint replacement surgery for Willis Knighton, I constantly strive to bring the best options and cuttingedge technology for my patients,” Dr. Chatrath said. “This provides an extremely high level of accuracy, which translates to better patient clinical outcomes.”
Dr. Gazi B. Zibari Performs
First Robotic Living Donor Kidney Transplant in ShreveportBossier
Gazi B. Zibari, MD, of Willis Knighton John C. McDonald Transplant Center, has performed North Louisiana’s first living donor kidney transplant using the da Vinci® XI robotic surgical system. The procedure was performed at Willis Knighton North.
A living donor kidney transplant is a surgical procedure to remove a healthy kidney from one person for transplant into someone else whose kidneys no longer function properly.
Traditionally, living donor kidney transplants have been performed using either a laparoscopic technique or open surgery. The da Vinci® XI robotic system allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive operations using small incisions and equipment while sitting at a computer console to virtually direct the robot and surgical instruments. Robotic surgery offers increased precision because optics are magnified, there is less
pain, faster recovery, and fewer incidences of wound complications.
Dr. Zibari noted robotic surgery broadens the transplant patient population that can be helped. He said now patients who are overweight or obese and who otherwise would have been declined to undergo transplantation due to potential complications have a second chance at a life-saving transplant.
“Willis Knighton has been a leader in minimally invasive surgery. This service will provide better quality care for our renal transplant patients,” Dr. Zibari said.
AFGSC Support Capabilities Grow with new Strikewerx Innovation Lab
Innovation Hub at the Cyber Innovation Center in Bossier City, Louisiana, the new space extends the hub’s footprint by nearly 2,000 square feet. The Innovation Lab features new equipment and capabilities in the form of augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) headsets, computers for modeling and simulation, three 3D printers, a handheld 3D scanner, a makerspace for prototyping, as well as a design space with teleconferencing capabilities.
“I am excited about the opening of the Innovation Lab, which will provide tools for our Airmen to quickly fabricate prototype solutions to the problems they encounter in their jobs,” said AFGSC Chief Scientist Dr. Donna Senft.
With this state-of-theart space, Airmen have the capability to learn and experiment with the
Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) Office of the Chief Scientist has grown its ability to support the needs of Airmen with the new STRIKEWERX Innovation Lab. Located within the STRIKEWERX

greater connection with industry and academia partners.
“The CIC highly values its partnership with the command and is continually working to support their needs for innovation and modernization,” said Kevin Nolten, CIC president. “This new Innovation Lab allows Airmen to bring to life ideas for their projects and improve the outcomes of our STRIKEWERX Design Sprints.”
The new Innovation Lab is CIC’s latest effort to support AFGSC’s nuclear mission while contributing to our nation’s defense. To date, the 78 solutions CIC delivered to the Air Force, further enabling modernization efforts, have created an impact greater than $268 million.
Willis Knighton’s Radiation Oncology Department Accredited
by Two National Organizations
The radiation oncology department at Willis Knighton Health has again received accreditation by two national organizations – the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO).
The department has been accredited by ACR since 2006 and ACRO since 2012. Renewals are performed every three and four years, respectively.
Lane R. Rosen MD, medical director of radiation oncology, indicated that it is uncommon for a radiation oncology department to be accredited by two separate national organizations. “The department chooses dual accreditation to assure excellence in quality of care,” he said. “By having both of these national organizations review our standards and procedures, patients and referring physicians are assured of the highest standards.”
Accreditation by ACR is based on self-assessment and peer review evaluations in the areas of equipment, medical personnel, quality assurance, policies and protocols, and therapeutic treatment. Accreditation by ACRO is based on chart reviews by experts

Athena Awards 2024
The Athena Awards, an esteemed accolade presented by the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, serve as a powerful testament to the extraordinary achievements of women leaders within the community. Established to honor the dedication and contributions of women who excel in their professional and personal endeavors, the awards not only celebrate individual accomplishments but also
promote the importance of women's leadership and empowerment. The historical roots of the Athena Awards can be traced back to the Athena International organization established in 1982. Implemented as a means to recognize and elevate the role of women in various sectors, the awards were designed to honor women who demonstrate excellence in their professional lives while also helping to empower other women. This year’s award honorees came from diverse
backgrounds and careers. Each candidate underwent a rigorous selection process. These women have all made significant contributions to their communities through professional achievements and advocacy for women’s rights. This year’s recipient was no exception.
Dr. Wanda Henderson Thomas is a full professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program Director, and Associate Dean for Admissions at LSU Health
Shreveport. She began serving others while in college and hasn’t stopped since. She graduated from Caddo Parish Magnet High School in 1992, earned a B.S. in Biology from Yale University in 1996, and a medical degree from LSU Medical School in New Orleans in 2000. She returned to Shreveport to enter the Pediatric Residency program at LSU Health Shreveport, where she completed her training in 2003.
“My initial position on staff at LSU Health Shreveport was that of Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics as well one of two inaugural Pediatric Hospitalists. I continue to work as a Hospitalist at our Ochsner LSU St. Mary’s location.” She continues to see patients in a weekly private clinic.
“This has afforded me the opportunity to grow more personal and professional relationships with children and families throughout the greater North Louisiana community.” In 2020, Dr. Thomas was promoted to full Professor. That same year, she had the honor and responsibility of serving as Associate Dean for Admissions at LSU Health Shreveport Medical School. As a member of the senior leadership at the medical school, Dr. Thomas engages with women at all levels of healthcare service. From mentoring medical students and serving as a fourth-year women’s advisor to writing
residency recommendation letters, she has developed close professional relationships with the students. She has also served as a preceptor for Nurse Practitioner students who need clinical hours in pediatrics. These students shadow her in her private clinic as well as on the wards as they learn how to care for pediatric patients.
Dr. Thomas’ pursuit of medicine as a career began at home. “Having no physicians in my family, my parents encouraged me to be limitless in my pursuit of academic achievement. Along with academic excellence, I trained in classical ballet for almost 15 years. The rigors of dance taught me that time, dedication, and perfect practice are essential tools to being successful in any field.”
Balancing the hours of dance
training and performing, along with a difficult academic load, made her thrive. She found herself drawn to the challenges of Science and Math. Those two subjects opened her eyes to the possibility of becoming a physician trailblazer, someone who can make an impactful difference in the greater community. “In the spirit of excellence, I sought out a college that would challenge me in both my studies and in my views of the world.
Growing up in Shreveport, Louisiana, I always knew that there was so much more in the world to see. As the child of educators, my parents instilled in me a thirst for knowledge. I have always known that education is the means by which the world and its endless possibilities would open to me.”
Dr. Thomas was introduced to the National Area Health Education Center (AHEC)
Association (NAO) as a fourth-year medical student completing my Family Medicine clerkship with one of the state’s AHEC community preceptors. She has served as the Program Director of LSU Health Shreveport’s AHEC office since 2013.. That shadowing experience with AHEC, a federally funded program that aims to increase the healthcare workforce in rural and underserved communities, solidified her desire to work in primary care and serve the patients of North Louisiana and beyond. “I have served in several leadership positions within the National AHEC organization. In October 2024, I will begin my tenure as president of the National AHEC Organization.”
Dr. Thomas is a published medical professional who has been called upon to present several of her papers and PowerPoint at professional meetings that include (just to give you a taste)
