BOOKS FOR YOUR BEACH BAG Well Read

This week's review TITLE: Utopia Avenue AUTHOR: David Mitchell NUMBER OF PAGES: 561 READING TIME: 9 hours 27 minutes PRICE: $30.95 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Utopia Avenue is the new novel from David Mitchell, author of bestseller “Cloud Atlas”. It tells the story of the fictional 1960’s British "psychedelic-folk-rock" supergroup Utopia Avenue, fronted by folksinger Elf Holloway, guitar demigod Jasper de Zoet, blues bassist Dean Moss and jazz drummer Peter "Griff" Griffin. The band exists amongst the smoke-filled bars and backstreets of London in 1967 – in the music world of David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Jackson Browne, John Lennon, Steve Winwood and Keith Moon. Mitchell incorporates so many of the who’s-who from the 60’s that you can lose track of the story if you pause too long. WHO IT'S FOR: Utopia Avenue contains references to people, places and events from other works by Mitchell, so fans will be familiar with the faulted characters, multiplicity of story lines and supernatural occurrences. The scale can be exhausting, as the band experiences more drama in a year than the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Beach Boys did in a lifetime! WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: In the absence of live rock concerts, this novel provides a taste of the buzz and the energy that we’re all missing. Sex, drugs, rock & roll are all present of course, plus a fatal car crash, attempted blackmail and plagiarism for dramatic effect. Mitchell’s famous horological themes also, somehow, make an appearance. NOTABLE QUOTES: “Jasper notes that Jesus's disciples were, essentially, hippies: long hair, gowns, stoner expressions, irregular employment, spiritual convictions, dubious sleeping arrangements and a guru.”
