Welcome to the inaugural Site and Sound program. It is my pleasure to introduce a local showcase of arts and cultural events in the Leichhardt Town Hall from Sunday 1 April to Saturday 12 May. Traditionally the hub of community life, Council is proud that our beautiful heritage Town Halls are places where residents can meet and connect. As a community we are keen to strengthen community ties, honour our heritage, and create opportunities for walkable neighbourhoods that will help us all to stay fit and lower our carbon footprint. We can do that by using our local venues and developing a vibrant local art, culture, and community. This aim is a key part of Leichhardt Council’s first ever Community and Cultural Plan, adopted in August 2011. The Plan has proposed many major initiatives to nurture our social, cultural and environmental wellbeing. In its first year Site and Sound showcases a diverse range of events from groups based in our local area. We are proud to present works from the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, Satsang - a Musical Celebration of Peace, Something Really Epic – a Leichhardt Youth Council event, and YouMove at the Hall from the area’s newest company YouMove. I encourage you to come along, be entertained and inspired, and help bring our beautiful Town Hall to life. And if you are an artist, performer, or producer, please contact us about getting involved in Site and Sound 2013! Whether you are a local or a visitor, come and experience what our beautiful Town Hall has to offer you.
Councillor Rochelle Porteous Mayor of Leichhardt Council

Site and Sound 2012 and beyond! Site and Sound is an exciting new initiative from Leichhardt Council to animate and enliven places and spaces in the Leichhardt LGA, based for this inaugural year, in the Leichhardt Town Hall. It provides local and visiting artists, performers, and cultural groups with the opportunity to present works to local audiences in a beautiful and sometimes challenging venue, honouring its traditional role as the centre of community life. Participating artists are offered the use of the Town Hall and a place in our Site and Sound program for free. With a small but diverse program in its first year Site and Sound highlights the diversity of arts and culture in and around the LGA and we encourage local arts and cultural groups to get on board for 2013. Register your interest now by calling (02) 9367 9184 or email: francescac@lmc.nsw.gov.au.

Site and Sound: Showcasing the Leichhardt Town Hall Leichhardt Town Hall is a centre for community life and has been in use for over 120 years. Established in 1888 local papers describe the excitement of the opening day with flags and potted plants decorating shops, balconies and houses along the route from Sydney to Leichhardt. Crowds of well dressed folk made their way to the Town Hall for the opening and over 5,000 residents attended. A guard of honour of 50 cadets was formed on the entrance steps of the portico and when Lord Carrington and Sir Henry Parkes (premier) arrived the cadets presented arms, a band began to play, and 8000 school students all began to sing the national anthem. The premier noted that 18 years previously Leichhardt had only consisted of a few bush huts and dense scrub and how much it had developed since its incorporation in 1871. Today the Town Hall is used for a diverse range of local and civic events. Along with Annandale and Balmain Town Halls it is a great resource for our communities. Our Out on the Town brochure available online at www.leichhardt.nsw.gov.au promotes the myriad of activities taking place in our town halls throughout the year.

Shanti Mission Harmony Centre A recent addition to our local area, the Harmony Centre in Camperdown offers activities every day of the week including meditation, Kirtan (chanting), and seminars. Satsang creates an intersection between arts, culture and spirituality and brings something new to Leichhardt.
Satsang – a Musical Celebration of Peace An event to uplift the spirit and nourish the soul. Satsang will showcase the beauty of chants of various traditions, including ancient Vedic chants from India. These chants are offered in the Indian cultural form of Kirtan in which the musicians ‘call’ the music and the audience responds. Newcomers can join in when they feel ready.
