a season of change

This is a year of transition as we complete the new Music Building, featuring a one-of-a-kind concert hall in the Intermountain West and a new recital hall. We will also commence work on a new Arts Building in 2023.

We will have several different venues this year. The final performances in the Harris Fine Arts Center will occur this fall. The theatre season will perform in a large black box theatre at the north end of former Provo High on University Avenue (also known as BYU West Campus). This venue will allow us to do some innovative productions.

In January, performances will begin in the new Music Building located on the east side of campus just off of 900 East. Dance performances will continue to be held in the Richards Building and in the Marriott Center.

This will be a year of lasts and firsts. Please come and participate in spaces and venues for the last time and be a part of the new and transitioning performance spaces. Get your tickets early because seating will be limited in all of these venues as everyone will want to be a part of this memorable and celebratory year.

VOCES8

After two past sold-out performances at BYU, VOCES8 returns to the BRAVO! Series this season. Since the octet’s founding in 2005, VOCES8 has attained international recognition for its concerts and recordings, which feature an extensive repertory. Noted as “undoubtedly gifted” by The Times (London), VOCES8 is equally at home singing Renaissance polyphony, jazz standards, and pop tunes. Hub New Music

Called “contemporary chamber trailblazers” by the Boston Globe, Hub New Music, composed of flute, clarinet, violin, and cello, is forging new pathways in the 21st-century repertoire. The ensemble’s ambitious commissioning projects and “appealing programs” (The New Yorker) celebrate the rich diversity of today’s classical music landscape. Its performances have been described as “gobsmacking” (Cleveland Classical), “innovative” (WBUR), and “the cutting edge of new classical music” (Taos News). Their performance at BYU will feature a world premiere of a piece composed by faculty member Kevin Anthony.

Itzhak Perlman with the BYU Philharmonic

We welcome the incomparable Itzhak Perlman back for a rare two-night engagement, this time performing the Mendelssohn violin concerto with the BYU Philharmonic. The winner of fifteen Grammy Awards, four Emmy awards, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Itzhak Perlman is a titan in the field of classical music. The concert also features the world premiere of Veils, Voices, and Visions by Stephen Jones, commissioned to celebrate the opening of the new Music Building.

Septura brings together London’s leading players to redefine brass chamber music through the uniquely expressive sound of the brass septet.

By creating a canon of transcriptions, arrangements, and new commissions for this brand-new classical configuration, Septura aims to recast the brass ensemble as a serious artistic medium.

Utah Symphony Family Series with FLY Dance Company

FLY is what happens when street dance and classical music meet! The entire family will love the pure fun of The Gentlemen of Hip Hop’s youthful energy, risk-taking movement, and clever choreography set to a mix of classical favorites. Gravity and Other Myths: A Simple Space

Described as “a total triumph” (The Guardian), Gravity and Other Myths is made up of seven acrobats who push their physical limits without reserve in a performance that is simultaneously raw, frantic, and delicate. This award-winning show is supported by driving live percussion and presented so intimately that audiences can feel the heat, hear every breath, and be immersed in every moment.

Ballet Showcase features classical repertoire and contemporary works by faculty and students performed by Ballet Showcase Company and Theatre Ballet. November’s performance includes excerpts from Swan Lake Act II, Gerald Arpino’s Viva Vivaldi, and a new premiere of Robyn Hood, an original ballet created in collaboration with students and faculty from the College of Fine Arts and Communications.

In April, the performance highlights mentored student choreography, faculty works, and excerpts from Don Quixote Act II.

One of ballet’s well-loved stories, Swan Lake, returns to BYU’s campus with Theatre Ballet’s family-friendly production. Restaged by Artistic Director Ashley Parov, patrons will experience romance, deception, and, ultimately, forgiveness as Odette and Siegfried’s story is told through dance. Note: This adaptation is approximately one hour and will run without intermissions or pauses.

In 2023, BYU Theatre Ballet will celebrate the 100th birthday of Gerald Arpino with an “All Arpino” night. One of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century and co-founder of the Joffrey Ballet, Arpino’s works are danced by professional companies throughout the world. With permission from the Gerald Arpino Foundation, it is our pleasure to feature three Arpino works in 2023: Birthday Variations, Viva Vivaldi, and Reflections

In Birthday Variations, the audience will be privileged to hear live piano accompaniment of the Giuseppe Verdi score by Amalie Simper. Reflections is a perfect representation of the Arpino style with challenging pas de deux work, virtuosic technique, and signature musicality. Theatre Ballet is especially excited to perform an excerpt of Viva Vivaldi for BYU audiences in preparation for their invited performance at the Gerald Arpino Centennial Celebration, which will take place in September 2023 in Chicago, IL. BYU Dancesport Championships

The BYU Dancesport Championships is the culminating event for fall semester for the BYU Ballroom Dance Program. Students present their learned technique in a competitive environment, and advanced-level dancers enter open categories in Latin and ballroom categories, vying for championship titles. This competition showcases the highest level of ballroom dance in the Intermountain West.

United States National Amateur Dancesport Championships

The largest amateur ballroom competition in the country, the United States National Amateur Dancesport Championships is the annual culminating event for competitive ballroom dance in the United States. National titles are awarded to the top ballroom and Latin dancers in all categories and age divisions.

The mission of dancEnsemble is mentoring and producing student choreography. This fall, dancEnsemble will feature eight student works and a new work by guest choreographer Alexandra Bradshaw-Yerby, created in collaboration with selected student choreographers. Finally, inspired by President Worthen's "The Propinquity Effect" address to BYU graduates, the full company of 30+ dancers will converge onstage in a celebration of shared time and space.

Kristen Applebee: Alumni Achievement Lecture

Kristen Applebee is the National 2019 Outstanding Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments and a 2020 top 10 finalist for Georgia Teacher of the Year. As an artist, she has exhibited her work across the country in over sixty shows. She has won awards for writing and illustrating and has taught on five college campuses in three states. She currently teaches as an adjunct faculty at Wesleyan College.
