Monday, 3220–3224 WSC, 12:30 p.m. Why Are There So Many “BYU”s?

Welcome to BYU Education Week 100 Years of Instruction and Learning: “Of Things Both in Heaven and in the Earth” (D&C 88:79) We are pleased to welcome you to BYU Education Week, a program designed to strengthen and enrich your life! Education Week brings together 220 presenters, 500 volunteers, and hundreds of BYU employees to provide a unique, outstanding educational experience. This year’s theme—100 Years of Instruction and Learning: “Of Things Both in Heaven and in the Earth” (Doctrine & Covenants 88:79)—was selected to commemorate the program’s 100th anniversary and the diversity of learning that has been available through the years. It began as Leadership Week in January 1922, with the purpose of providing spiritual and academic training to leaders in various lines of community and Church leadership. In 1963, the name was changed to Education Week due to the expanded nature of courses offered and the ability of the general public to attend by that time. Education Week presentations continue to be designed for youth and adults, women and men, single and married individuals. With classes available in a great variety of subjects— gospel principles, the arts, family and marriage relationships, finance, personal development, technology, health, and many others—you have an opportunity to learn much that will motivate, encourage, strengthen, and rejuvenate. We are confident that as you attend the program and benefit from the resources and atmosphere of Brigham Young University, you will have a rewarding and uplifting experience. Sincerely, H. Bruce Payne Mikayla Robins Janessa Meiners BYU Education Week Staff

FOOD AND DRINK IN CLASSROOMS

With the exception of the Marriott Center, food and drink may not be consumed in classrooms. Water bottles are permitted in all classrooms.

Hosting is an enjoyable and rewarding experience, as evidenced by the hundreds of volunteers who return each year. In exchange for their service, volunteers receive complimentary class admission for the week. To volunteer, complete the short application at educationweek.byu.edu by July 30 (or until hosting shifts are filled). Please note the following hosting information: • You receive a complimentary Monday–Friday name badge if you host a shift for four consecutive days.

NO RECORDING OF LECTURES

• Volunteers attend a training session at 10:00 a.m. in 3220–3224 WSC on Saturday, August 13, 2022. If you are not from the local area and cannot attend the meeting, please contact our office at 801-422-6214.

Information presented in BYU Education Week financial classes is intended to be general information to help you make better-informed decisions and should not be relied on as a substitute for professional advice regarding your personal financial planning. Before you make any investment (or other financial commitment, including insurance), you should consult with your own financial advisor. Neither BYU Education Week nor Brigham Young University accepts any responsibility for decisions students make based on information presented in these classes.

• Hosting staff must be 18 years of age or older.

GENERAL INFORMATION DRESS AND CONDUCT STANDARDS

Participants are asked to uphold BYU standards of dress and conduct while attending Education Week. Clothing should be modest in fabric, fit, style, and length. Clothing that is sleeveless, strapless, or revealing is not acceptable. Skirts, dresses, and shorts must be knee-length or longer. See the Education Week website for details.

Lectures may not be recorded or broadcast. Taking pictures during a lecture is permitted, but please turn off the flash and be courteous of the presenter and others around you.

CELL PHONES

Please be considerate by silencing your phone and not making calls in the classroom.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT FINANCIAL CLASSES

ASSESS YOUR HEALTH

Before you decide to attend the program, please carefully assess your health condition in light of the heat, altitude, large crowds, stairs, and possible long walking distances between classes.

EMERGENCY HEALTH CARE

For the most immediate emergency response while at the program, call 801-422-2222 to reach BYU Police, or call 911 for emergency services. The Student Health Center (SHC) is available to Education Week students in case of accident or sudden illness. Regular business hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Proof of Education Week registration is required to receive health services. You must pay for treatment when you receive it. The Student Health Center is not a Medicare or Medicaid provider.

43

PERSONAL COUNSELING REQUESTS

You are welcome to speak with faculty members after their presentations; however, please do not ask for personal counsel, advice, or help from the faculty. Individuals should seek counsel from their local priesthood leaders or clergy regarding personal problems or concerns.

LOST AND FOUND

Found items, including Education Week name badges, should be taken to the hosting table of the building in which they are found. At the end of each day, all items are taken to the BYU Lost and Found office (1131 WSC, 801-422-3024). Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to noon. If no one is at the office, participants can call 801-422-3024 to request help.

NO PRIVATE VENDORS OR FLYERS

Distribution of flyers or advertising brochures of any type is prohibited on university property. Likewise, private vendors are not allowed on university property.

HELP WITH DISABILITIES

BYU is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for people with qualified disabilities. Before registration and at least 30 days before the program begins, discuss your individual situation with the program coordinator. Standard hearing-impaired receivers on the “red” channel (channel A) work in the Marriott Center. If you bring a personal receiver, headset, and batteries, your set will operate in the Marriott Center. If you need technical help with your set, see the engineers at the sound booth inside Portal H. Several buildings on campus are also set up for receivers, which may be checked out from 2170 WSC.

INTERNET ACCESS

Education Week participants have free guest access to the internet via wireless network in most academic buildings (including the WSC), classrooms, and student common areas on campus. This service is not available in student housing residences except in the common areas. Education Week makes no guarantee of service. The guest wireless network is an unsecured connection; participants are advised to use caution when sending confidential information over a wireless network. To connect to the wireless network, choose BYUWiFi or BYUGUEST from the list of available networks on your mobile device. You will be prompted to agree to the terms of service for guest access every 24 hours. No password is needed to access BYU-WiFi or BYUGUEST.

PROGRAM EVALUATIONS Education Week welcomes participant feedback and suggestions. Submit an online evaluation of your Education Week experience at educationweek.byu.edu between August 15 and September 9, 2022.

TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING PARKING ON CAMPUS

Education Week parking is available in specified lots on campus and is marked on the map on pages 32–33. Please park only in these areas and within painted stalls, not along unpainted curbs. Your vehicle should not extend over the lines dividing the stalls, either on the sides or in front. Cars are not allowed to park in designated motorcycle areas or travel lanes. Your vehicle may be ticketed or towed if you park in areas other than those indicated on the map, if it is parked in a stall designated for another purpose, if it is occupying more than one parking space, or if it is along an unpainted curb in a travel lane. Disability Parking requires a state-issued handicap plate or permit. Please do not park in neighborhoods north of the Marriott Center or east of 900 East. Ample parking is available in the lot west of LaVell Edwards Stadium at 1700 North 150 East. Shuttle buses run continuously from that parking lot to campus.

RV PARKING

We encourage you to stay in local campgrounds designed for RVs. While not encouraged, RVs are permitted in lot 37, north of the Indoor Practice Facility (see map). RV parking is restricted both day and night to this lot only. RV parking on campus is available for completely self-contained RVs only and is permitted beginning Saturday, August 13, on a firstcome, first-served basis. Lot 37 is a parking lot only; there are no restrooms, showers, hookups, or dump sites. Restrooms and showers in student housing and locker-room areas may not be used by participants staying in RVs. We also ask that you not bring pets onto campus property. When using the parking area, you must keep it free of litter, ensure that your vehicle does not leak, keep awnings contained so traffic is not impeded, be sure you do not attach anything to structures, fixtures, surfaces, or electrical sources, and keep RVs inside parking stalls as much as possible. Shuttle vans run between lot 37 and the main campus.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Call 888-743-3882 or visit rideuta.com for bus and train route time schedules and information. We strongly encourage you to use the bus rapid transit system, Utah Valley Express (UVX), Route 830X, which runs through Provo and Orem. The benefits of riding Utah Valley Express: • It is currently FREE to ride. Other routes require a fare. • No need to bring a car to campus. • Buses arrive at each station every 10 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays. The early-morning and late-evening routes, from 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. and from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m., arrive at each station every 15 minutes. See rideuta.com for weekend times.

44

• Buses stops include three stations on campus: • the BYU Stadium Station near the Marriott Center • the BYU North Campus Station near the BYU Conference Center • the BYU South Campus Station just 300 yards south of the Wilkinson Student Center • Each end of the UVX route—the Provo Central Station and the Orem Central Station—is a connecting point to FrontRunner, UTA’s commuter rail system that has trains running between Ogden and Provo. BYU is just a 23-minute bus ride from either of these stations.

COURTESY SHUTTLE VANS

Primarily to assist senior and disabled students, courtesy vans run between specified campus locations from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Monday and from 7:45 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (or until after the evening performances) on Tuesday through Friday (see map on pages 32–33). Van routes take participants to key destination points, but they cannot take you directly to the door. You are responsible for moving from class to class or to a parking lot or residence hall. Shuttles run regularly between perimeter parking lots and the main campus; shuttles also run directly from the West Stadium Lot to campus. Van stops are marked on the campus map on pages 32–33, and large, detailed route maps are posted at each van stop and at Education Week information desks. Buses that run between the West Stadium Lot, the Marriott Center, and the Museum of Art (adjacent to the Harris Fine Arts Center) are wheelchair accessible. One wheelchair-accessible van is available. To contact the driver of this van, call 801-674-5405 and tell the driver at which shuttle stop you are located.

AIRLINE FLIGHTS AND COMMERCIAL TRANSPORTATION

Airline flights may be arranged through BYU Travel Management Services at 801-422-3872. Mention that you are attending BYU Education Week. Express Shuttle (801-596-1600) has multiple fleet vehicles and offers ground transportation from the Salt Lake City International Airport to the Provo area. Another option to get from the Salt Lake International Airport to BYU campus is to use public transportation. Board a train at the Airport Station, transfer to FrontRunner at the North Temple Station, transfer to the free UVX rapid transit bus at the Orem Central Station, and ride to the BYU Stadium stop or the BYU North Campus stop. Get detailed help by using the Trip Planner at rideuta.com.

HOUSING ON-CAMPUS HOUSING

Please check the Education Week website for updated information about campus housing.

HOTELS AND MOTELS

Information about hotels and motels in the Provo area is available at educationweek.byu.edu.

Advice from Longtime Education Week Attendees • Mark first- and second-choice class preferences for each hour. • Bring a light sweater—some classrooms are cooler than others. And wear comfortable shoes! • Carry a small notebook or tablet for class notes. Rather than trying to write down everything, write the things that are most meaningful to yOu. • Expand your interests and take advantage of new learning opportunities by attending one or two classes each year that you would not typically choose. • Visit with the people around you. It’s a good way to get to know good people, and they may recommend great classes you might otherwise miss. • Avoid restroom lines by using facilities in buildings and on floors where classes are not held. • Ask a friend or family member to drop you off at BYU each day. If this is not possible, save time by parking west of the stadium and taking a shuttle. • Ride the rapid transit Utah Valley Express (UVX) for free. See rideuta.com for details.

Classroom Etiquette The following guidelines show respect and courtesy for everyone and provide a pleasant atmosphere during Education Week. • Remember to silence your cell phone before class begins. • Please follow the directions of the hosting staff—they help maintain the order needed for a successful program. • Remember that classes are first-come, first-served, and saving seats is not permitted. • Position your name badge so the hosting staff can readily see it. • Other than water, please do not eat or drink in the classrooms. • Lectures may not be recorded or broadcast. • Ask questions or make comments only when invited to do so by the presenter. • Refrain from asking presenters about their published works. The BYU Store carries items recommended by presenters for Education Week students. • Please do not leave class early or applaud after testimonies.

Thank you!

We hope you enjoy BYU Education Week. 47
