Kit List
◆ Squirrel Felt Appliqué Hoop Kit by Corinne Lapierre ◆ Fine liner pen ◆ Embroidery scissors ◆ Pins
1Unscrew the hoop and take the larger circle off. Lay the marl turquoise felt over the smaller hoop, place the larger circle back on top and push down to trap the felt between the two. You may need to loosen the screw a bit more if it doesn’t fit. The felt should be stretched, but not too much. 2Trace the templates onto the various colours of felt and cut out all the pieces. Place the main pieces on the background so you can ensure everything fits. The large yellow toadstool goes in the centre with the squirrel on top. Add the medium and small toadstool caps on either side. Pin those to the background and remove the large yellow toadstool and the squirrel. 3Take the long strips for the stalks. As they are thin, they can easily be shaped into curves. Pin the long stalks going from the centre at the bottom to the highest cap on each side. Slide the end under the cap. Use the together (satin stitch) to create a solid shape. Embroider two lines of blue backstitch on the tail and add blue daisy stitches to look like leaves. Add a big green flower made of daisy stitches on the leg. Fill all daisy stitches with a small straight stitch in pastel green using three strands. 7Add the cap on the acorn the squirrel is holding. Secure with brown French knots, using two strands, and add a straight stitch for the stalk (3). Scatter four acorns on the ground. Sew the yellow felt to the background with a whipstitch. Place the caps on top and hold with brown French knots. Add a little stalk
remaining strips to make the other stalks. Cut to size and slide the ends under the main stalk and the caps. Once you're happy with the overall shape, sew them to the background with lines of beige running stitch. Sew the terracotta toadstool caps to the background felt with a brown whipstitch. 4Add the main toadstool in the centre, ensuring the stalk covers the ends of the thinner stalks. Pin the squirrel at the top, with its little leg resting on top of the toadstool cap. Add a yellow acorn in its hand. Sew everything to the background with a matching whipstitch (1). 5Embroider the big stalk with lines of beige running stitch, following the round shape. Place the larger spores on the big yellow toadstool and secure with a small beige whipstitch. Do the same for the smaller toadstools with the small spores. Add two to three per cap (2). 6Embroider the squirrel. Make the lines shown on the templates for the ear with a brown backstitch and for the leg and chin with a red one. Add two brown straight stitches (upside down V shape) for the inner ear and an almond shape for the eye in backstitch. Fill it with long straight stitches close

with a brown straight stitch (4). 8Decorate the top of the frame with a vine. Embroider a curved line of green backstitch and add little lines of small branches falling. Place the leaves and the remaining acorn to fill the space. Sew the leaves to the background with lines of backstitch going through the centres to look like veins. Sew the acorn in the same way as in Step 7.

Helping Hand
◆ Transfer the templates by tracing around them directly onto the felt with a pen ◆ Remember to split your thread and use only one strand to keep the embroidery delicate. Simply cut a length and pull out a strand ◆ As felt does not fray, you can simply trim the surplus felt at the back of the hoop as neatly as possible
