➤ Jan. 5-31 Postcards Home: Wish You Were Here….

Howard County Public School System Annual Show This exhibition highlights work from Howard County Public School System’s kindergarten through 12th grade visual arts program. Students were asked to imagine or remember a place, time or experience, and to record it both visually and through text to share with friends and families “back home.” The challenge presented required them to work within the constraints of the postcard format while still being open and responsive to unique solutions, imagination and personal narrative. Reception: Wednesday, Jan. 18, 5-6:30pm

➤ Monday, Jan. 9, 7pm Bitter Memories: The Fall of Saigon With Tom Glenn

Tom Glenn was in Saigon as an undercover signals intelligence operative in April 1975 during the fall of Saigon and the North Vietnamese attack on the city. Glenn cheated, lied and stole to assure that none of his subordinates, their wives or children were killed or wounded in the attack. Glenn will present his story of how he got people out of Saigon by any ruse he could think of. For his work during the fall of Vietnam, Glenn received the civilian Meritorious Medal, his proudest possession.


➤ Monday, Feb. 27, 7pm NASA’s Historic Mission to Pluto

With Alice Bowman, New Horizons Mission operations manager, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory

Bowman, the New Horizons Mission operations manager, will talk about the voyage of NASA’s historic mission to Pluto, which led to the first flight past the distant dwarf planet on July 14, 2015. Experience this journey through the eyes of the mission operations team as Bowman describes some of the challenges of piloting the small robotic spacecraft through the solar system for nearly a decade. Her team itself was part of history, operating a spacecraft that traveled longer and farther than any mission ever to reach its main target.

If you haven’t experienced Giuliano and Westhaver’s film talks, then you are in for a (literal) treat! Back by popular demand, this presentation marks the sixth time this dynamic duo has shared their film knowledge and expertise with our salon groups. Giuliano and Westhaver will be sharing their knowledge about food as a topic in film. In line with the theme, attendees are welcome to bring a favorite dessert or snack item to share. Columbia Art Center will provide other potluck snacks and beverages.

Keating will share folk songs, ghazals from Pakistan and classical ragas from North India. She has taught at UCLA and performed on national television, at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, UCLA, and several international celebrations.

NEW! Columbia Art Center presents a new and free literary reading series that will feature local poets and authors, as well as an open mic for interested audience members. With Ann Wiker, art historian, artist and instructor for Johns Hopkins’ Osher program and Howard Community College NEW! OFFICE ART RESCUE

Columbia Art Center is the ideal venue for companies to hold fun team-building painting activities in a relaxing atmosphere. These art workshops can be held seven days a week, based on availability. Columbia Art Center provides the canvas, easel, brushes, paints and smocks/aprons for your entire team. You are welcome to bring refreshments or catering for your event. Team-Building Painting Activities Individual Paintings: Each participant paints and personalizes their own painting with the help of the instructor’s step-by-step instruction.

One-Step, Two-Step Painting: Paint one step, then move to a different seat to continue to the next step. Collaborative Painting: Everyone in the group contributes to a large, 3-foot by 4-foot painting. One collaborative painting is recommended for every 10 painters at the event. These works of art are ideal for displaying on the office wall and for use as a conversation piece. Mystery Masterpiece: Our instructor takes you through the painting process step by step. The fun twist with this project is that no one knows what the painting will look like until it is completed.

FREE FAMILY ART FRENZY Enjoy a free, family-friendly art afternoon on the second Sunday of each month. Experiment with mixed media and have a blast creating your own inspired creations. This art integration class will allow you to develop artistic skills and techniques while learning age-appropriate basics in subjects such as language, mathematics, history, science and health. Explore a new subject each week. Provide your child with a new way of studying a subject while they have fun creating art. MOMMY AND ME ART PLAY WORKSHOP For adult and child ages 2-5 With Laura Easter Drop-in format returns! Together, parents and toddlers will explore colors, shapes and textures using various age-appropriate tools and art supplies. Each class explores a new theme and experience for your child. Learn to mix colors, make new colors with various paint combinations and create fun art projects with textures. Each class will include a brief story time to give children the opportunity to learn how their masterpieces connect to the real world.

YOUTH &TEEN CLASSES

Unless otherwise noted, supplies are included in the cost of tuition for youth classes. Because Columbia Art Center wants students to focus on the activity and not worry about getting messy, it is recommended that they wear old clothes or bring a smock for all activities. YOUNG ARTIST MASTERY PROGRAM For ages 6-17 Columbia Art Center’s Young Artist Mastery Program offers students the chance to focus on their studies as they hone their artistic abilities. Whether used as a means for creative self-expression or to prepare for further artistic endeavors, these classes and workshops will work to expand participants’ skill levels and stretch their creativity while building confidence and artistic sensibility. Who Should Take This Program: Students ages 6-17 who took or will take classes or workshops at Columbia Art Center starting Fall 2015 through the present session. Program Description: Students are asked to complete four classes that will enable them to receive a Level 1 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a 25 percent discount on a future class or workshop. Students who complete eight classes will receive a Level 2 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and 50 percent discount on a future class or workshop. Students who complete 12 classes will receive a Level 3 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a free class. Register for free for the Youth Artistic Mastery Program when you sign up and pay for your first class. Classes taken during the Fall 2016, Winter 2017, Spring 2017, Summer 2017 and Fall 2017 sessions can apply to the Mastery Program.

DRAWING SERIES 102: ALL DRAWING MEDIUM For ages 9-12 With Alina Poroshina Continuing students are encouraged in this class! Children love to draw and they do so freely and with great joy. Preadolescents reach a point where they want to achieve new levels of realism in their work. To do this, they must learn to see with an artist’s eye. This course introduces methods to help reach their goals in a fun and productive way. They will concentrate on a variety of drawing types — still life, landscape and portraiture — while working with a diverse spectrum of media like graphite, charcoal, chalk pastels and colored pencils. ADULTS Ages 17 and Older CERAMICS NOTE: All winter 2017 enrolled ceramics students can use the open studio to practice their skills for free. The studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramic classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium-sized pieces (approximately 200 cubic inches each) per session, e.g. 25 pieces for a 10-week session, 20 pieces for an eight-week session, etc. Students who wish to produce more than 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. Individual pieces that exceed 1,500 cubic inches in size are charged a separate firing fee. Individual tools and clay are not included. No production work, please.

Using Adobe Photoshop Elements®, this course will focus on the art and skill of image adjustment and how to organize and manage your photos for effective storage and retrieval. In this fun morning workshop you have the choice of learning one of three techniques: Tunisian crochet, knitting or basic crochet. Tunisian crochet is an easy variation of classic crochet that gives a three-dimensional structural look. Learn to do the chain stitch (for foundation chain), as well as the Tunisian simple stitch. In knitting, you will learn how to cast on, master the knit and purl stitches and how to cast off. Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes, please call Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075.

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Associationassessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Nonresident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event Columbia Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.
