MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and connecting with local art organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings. OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures, and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, Columbia Art Center is 28 years old, but it has been a functioning arts school for more than 40 years. It was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts Center.
LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center (next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 and Tamar Drive. DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile. Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parking lot. The Art Center is located in the courtyard (look for the large round window). From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River Exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. RENTALS New gallery rental opportunity for summer months! Attention artists: If you would like to showcase your art and hold your own reception in a professional gallery setting, then here is an opportunity for you. Columbia Art Center now provides gallery space for rent during July and August. For a reasonable rate, you are welcome to rent the Main Gallery for one to two weeks, install your own show and host your own reception. Invite family, friends, community members, press, and art collectors. When Howard County public schools are out, come to the Art Center for an amazing day of creative fun and go home with cool art projects. Bring a friend, make new friends, pack a lunch, and enjoy a fun day of art! Children will be served a snack and beverage after 3:30pm. Registration can be taken until the day before the School’s Out date. The program lessons will be available to view a month before each date. Full Day: 7:30am-5:30pm, $50 per child. Columbia Art Center is pleased to invite students ages 11-13 to participate in its Visiting Artist Series. The series is designed to encourage young artists to improve their technical skills while acquiring a sense of personal expression. The program provides an opportunity for students to connect with community artists and to cultivate a passion for the arts. Guest instructors will discuss their personal art and creative process while teaching a unique and challenging workshop. June 17 • Botanical Printmaking with Korey Rosenbaum Learn about artists inspired by the natural world (inspired by artists Anna Atkins and Andy Goldsworthy). After collecting materials from a nature walk, create one-of-a-kind prints using exciting printmaking techniques that explore layering and composition. June 18 • 2-Dimensional Explorations with Liron Fisch Investigate the world of 2-D. Learn to draw and paint a still life and a contour drawing using pencil, charcoal, pastels, and acrylics. Let’s experiment and create a mixed media masterpiece!
Art Camp provides exciting avenues of creativity and discovery to every camper in a healthy and safe environment. Each week has a unique theme to promote diverse and entertaining projects for each camp session. Campers experiment with colors, textures, mediums and performance methods through daily projects and lessons. Art Specialists teach visual and performing arts processes, including printmaking, painting, three-dimensional design, collage, drawing, clay works, puppetry, skit creation and much more. The young artists are encouraged to explore their imaginations and develop their own style of artistic expression. Additional programming includes Zumba® dance class, daily outdoor recreation time, swimming once a week and other performance related activities. There will be a special collaborative camp project or show at the end of each one-week session. Sessions begin Monday, June 22 and run through Friday, August 15! Join us and see what it’s all about! In this workshop, participants will cover basic methods of slab hand-building with clay to construct creative unique decor projects such as jewelry, candle holders, mirrors and more. Projects will then be stamped, carved, and painted with colorful underglazes. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for the drying and firing of finished work. MIXED MEDIA MANIA For ages 5-10 with Korey Rosenbaum Have fun learning about the principles and elements of design by creating cultural projects using a variety of media including paints, found objects, fabric, paper and more! In a fun and relaxing atmosphere, learn basic techniques of hand-building (coil, pinch, slab) to express individuality and creativity. PAINTING BY DESIGN For ages 10-14 with Kate Cavanaugh Expand your understanding of color theory and how to choose subjects for paintings from photographs. As a group, you will work on one painting together, exploring various ways to begin a composition. You will then choose your own subject matter for a painting. Begin with classroom studies of basic proportion and careful observation to achieve likeness and form. Learn skills which address drawing accuracy and explore modern techniques that focus on expressiveness. Live models will be used in the final three sessions. ADULTS Ages 17and Older CERAMICS NOTE: All spring 2015 enrolled ceramics students can use open studio free of charge to practice their skills. Free open studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramic classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes, and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium sized pieces (approximately 200 cu. in. each) per session, e.g. 10 week session = 25 pieces, 8 week session = 20 pieces, etc. Students who wish to produce an excess of 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. In this three-hour workshop, participants will cover methods of centering clay and throwing bowl and cylinder forms. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon. The play premiered last year in Southampton, UK and is a documentary-style historical drama based on the 1912 Titanic US Senate Hearings led by Michigan Senator William Alden Smith. The play presents a different perspective on the tragedy, focusing on key players and rescue efforts surrounding the tragedy. Marshall will share unique history about the Titanic as you are taken on a moving journey directly over the wreck site of the Titanic.
Monday, June 8, 7pm Seth Kibel, Musician: The Origins of Jazz Enjoy an evening of music and discussion which focuses on the early decades of music now called jazz. The discussion will focus on New Orleans where multiple ethnicities and several musical traditions converged to give birth to this uniquely American musical genre. You will then travel to Chicago, in the 1920’s, and wind up in New York, which ultimately becomes the epicenter of jazz from the 1930’s up until the present day. TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS WITH YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA with Dennis Gilbert Do you ever wish your photographs could be more creative and satisfying? If so, this is the workshop for you! Through photo assignments, discussion and demonstration, explore camera operation in both manual and automatic modes, and examine the elements of composition to learn what makes a good photograph. GLASS FUSED GLASS BOWL SAMPLING WORKSHOP with Jean Marie Mettee NEW! Are you fascinated by the beauty and richness of fused glass? This sampling workshop is for you! Have fun learning basic fused glass techniques and create your own fused glass square bowl. Bring your friends for a fun, creative morning! Light refreshments will be available. Your creation will be ready for pickup within two weeks following the workshop. Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes, please call the Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075.
DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident “ tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident “ tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.
SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.
CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event the Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.
ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.

RENTALRATES Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event. Art displays change regularly. Our rooms accommodate bridal and baby showers, corporate meetings, art and craft group meetings, lectures, art project rentals, birthday parties and celebrations of all sorts, even small weddings. Columbia Art Center provides tables and chairs. Room setup and take down are responsibility of renter. Please allow setup and take-down time in your rental timeframe. For an additional fee, Columbia Art Center can set up room. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. A class will be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met three days prior to the class beginning. Several classes have pre-requisites. Please read course descriptions carefully. Release, Waiver of Liability and Indemnity Agreement In consideration for being allowed to use The Columbia Association, Inc.’s ( “CA “) facilities and equipment, participate in any of CA’s classes and programs or avail myself of CA’s services (collectively, “CA activities “), I agree to abide by all rules established by CA. I hereby release CA, its officers, employees, instructors, trainers, agents or representatives (the “Releasees “) from all liability to the undersigned, my representatives, heirs and assigns, for any and all claims for any loss, damage, theft of personal property, personal injury, bodily injury or death, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise, arising as a result of CA activities. I further waive and covenant not to sue Releasees for any such claims.
